When I was in my first year of high school, I had a terrible time when every area of my life was a disaster. I felt so hopeless and alone that I thought everything was impossible.
On one such day, I was walking from class across the school to catch the school bus home, with my head down, fighting tears of total hopelessness, when a young man came down the sidewalk toward me. Though I had never seen him before, I did not want him to see that I was in such low spirits, so I turned my head away and hoped to hurry past. I thought he’d walk on by, but he moved until he was directly in front of me, waited until I looked up, and then smiled.
Looking into my eyes, this stranger spoke in a quiet voice: “Whatever is wrong will pass. You’re going to be OK, just hang on.” He then smiled again and walked away.
I can’t explain the effect of that man’s unexpected kindness and caring! He gave me the one thing that I’d lost completely—hope. I looked for him in our school to thank him, but never saw him again.
That was thirty years ago. And I’ve never forgotten that moment. Over the years, whenever I see someone who is in trouble, I will always think of that young man and try to give a flash of hope in the dark wherever I can. I carry things for people when they are too heavy for them, sit with naughty babies in the waiting room while their mothers are busy, or talk to tired couples at the checkout line or it could be anything. If you keep your head up, your heart will show you the place that needs hope.

25.What made the writer feel hopeful again?

Students may feel a little bit nervous when they are faced with an exam. They may start to sweat and grow short of breath. They may even become so fearful that they can’t focus or think. This is known as test anxiety, which can stop students in their tracks.
Stress causes different levels of anxiety. Good stress causes just enough worry to get someone to focus on a task and do it well. Bad stress, however, does just the opposite. Instead of helping someone to focus, bad stress may make a person not able to think or focus clearly. This stress response hurts more than it helps. So students should learn how to deal with anxiety and do well on exams in different ways.
The first step involves keeping good stress from turning into bad stress. The best way to do this is to prepare the mind and the body. Instead of treating a test as a big challenge, you can use it as a motivator(动力)to learn. Prepare by making sure you understand what you will be tested on. This will help you do well.
The next step is knowing about your body and recognizing the signs of anxiety before it happens. Metacognition can help you achieve this. Metacognition is self-awareness of what the mind and body are up to in the moment. One way to think of it is by placing yourself on a “mental balcony” and evaluating yourself as if observing from above. Recognizing your own stress signals can help you figure out how to keep from experiencing increased anxiety.
Relaxation fights anxiety. If you find yourself really panicked (惊慌失措), take a moment to step back. Stop and close your eyes. Take deep breaths and think of a peaceful place to calm yourself down. As you relax, remind yourself that you have prepared and that all will be well.
Remember, we all experience anxiety at times. Whether you’re taking a test, performing, or competing, you can apply anxiety—reducing strategies to keep cool. Using stress as a motivator instead of an obstacle can keep you from getting overly anxious. Coping with anxiety effectively will help you be your best for the test and for any other challenges you face.
27.According to the passage, which of the following would reduce test anxiety?
A.Keeping questions in mind. B.Placing yourself on a balcony.
C.Allowing yourself to calm down. D.Focusing on your task all the time.
28.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Stress signals can keep away test anxiety.
B.Bad stress prevents a person from focusing or thinking.
C.Using stress as an obstacle helps you do well in exams.
D.Treating a test as a big challenge can reduce test anxiety.
29.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The ways to reduce test anxiety. B.The importance of having exams.
C.The introduction of different kinds of stress. D.The reasons to turn bad stress into good stress.
D
Being thankful and expressing it to others is good for our health and happiness. It also helps us build trust and closer relationships with the people around us.
These benefits have mostly been seen when two people are involved: one person gives thanks and the other receives thanks. Now, a new study suggests that expressing gratitude (感谢) not only improves one-to-one relationships, but could bring whole groups together—inspiring (激发) a will to help and connect in people who simply see an act of gratitude.
In this study, Sara Algoe and her team ran several experiments to find out how seeing gratitude influences people’s feelings toward the thankful person and the person who is thanked.
In one experiment, participants (参与者) were tasked with reading a movie review draft and underlining eye-catching parts for the reviewer’s benefit. First they saw an example. Several lines of text were underlined, as the task required, but many mistakes were also corrected, showing effort that went beyond the task. Some participants could see a handwritten note from the reviewer saying, “Thank you so much for catching those mistakes!”
Afterward, participants underlined parts in another article by the reviewer. Then researchers counted how many mistakes participants corrected, and asked them how much they might like to be friends with the reviewer.
The results showed that participants who had seen a note of gratitude were more willing to correct mistakes and help out, and more likely to want to become friends with the reviewer, than those who hadn’t.
Algoe and her team also discovered from other survey questions that participants wanted to help and connect with the person receiving the gratitude. “That’s because receiving gratitude marks you as a person who is effective at being supportive or helpful,” says Algoe.
These findings show that expressing gratitude not only strengthens the relationships between the people involved but also influences the people who see it in ways that could reverberate throughout a group. If people in a group notice others’ good acts and thank them for their kindnesses, the whole group could be encouraged to be kinder to one another.
Does this mean we should all express gratitude more often? Yes. We can give a hug, bring a gift of flowers, or just say thank you. Gratitude expression seems to be a special kind of emotional experience that is great for building relationships.
30.What do we know about the experiment?
A.Participants tried to make friends with the reviewer.
B.Participants were asked to write a movie review draft.
C.Participants were thanked for underlining eye-catching parts.
D.Participants who saw a thank you note corrected more mistakes.
31.Which of the following best matches the findings of the study?
A.Tony is thanked a lot because he always helps others.
B.Susan and Mike are friends and they always help each other.
C.Linda is supportive in a group and becomes the group leader.
D.Amy wants to be friends with John because he is thanked a lot.
32.The words “reverberate throughout a group” in Paragraph 8 probably mean “________”.
A.attract more people to join a group B.have an effect on everyone in a group
C.help group members develop their strengths D.provide opportunities for everyone in a group
33.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To introduce how to express gratitude properly.
B.To explain why people show and receive gratitude.
C.To encourage people to show thankfulness to others.
D.To remind people of the importance of helping others.
第二部分
本部分共5题, 共20分。根据题目要求, 完成相应任务。
四、 阅读表达(共10分, 第1-3题每小题2分, 第4小题4分)
Every Sunday at 2 pm, Marisela Godinez, the owner of a Mexican restaurant in Texas, used to fill a big bag with more than 50 liters of leftover (未食用的) food which is unsold from the restaurant’s all-you-can-eat lunch buffet (自助餐). “We threw out a lot of food,” she said.
But a few months ago, Ms. Godinez signed up to use an app called Too Good To Go. Now, 10 customers pick up “surprise bags” of her leftover food for $ 5.99 each and she sends far fewer leftovers to the bin.
Around the country, restaurants and grocery stores throw away huge amounts of unsold food every day. Apps that connect customers to businesses with unsold food have begun to spread. The idea of apps like Too Good To Go is to help businesses sell unsold food at a low price rather than throw it away. They say that the businesses and buyers are helping the environment because the food would otherwise become food waste, a big contributor (导致因素) to climate change.
Food production itself is a big contributor to greenhouse gas release (释放). It is responsible for nearly a third of gas release in the world. Each step of the process—growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, storing and preparing for food—releases carbon dioxide (CO2) and other planet-warming gases. When the food is wasted, greenhouse gas releases. In addition, once unused food reaches the bins, it breaks down and releases more greenhouse gases.
Too Good To Go has tried to make buying unsold food a game. In the United States, customers in 12 cities can book “surprise bags” that typically cost about $ 4 to $ 6 each on the app. The food in the bags would have been firstly priced at about three times that amount. Then, they can pick up the bags at a certain time window.
According to interviews with several companies selling on Too Good To Go, there are at least a few things that buyers don’t think of as “food waste”. An owner of a company which sells drinks said he only used the app to sell discontinued products but also new-flavored drinks in hopes of attracting new customers.
34.Who is Marisela Godinez?
35.What is the idea of apps like Too Good To Go?
36.How do customers in America buy unsold food on Too Good To Go?
37.Would you use apps like Too Good To Go to buy unsold food? Why or why not? (Please give at least two reasons.)

【答案】例文
It’s important to understand “Less Is More”. From my point of view, we are supposed to focus on getting a few things done at a time to be productive rather than rushing to work at a variety of different things.
I have put the idea into practice as follows. Instead of struggling to get a hold of various tasks, I choose to pick one out of them and spare no effort to complete it, which brings me a sense of achievement from time to time. Furthermore, I set a limit on the activities I take part in, prioritizing the one that I am unwilling to miss. Doing so always gives me the sheer pleasure of enjoying what I truly want to do.
The beauty of “Less ls More” is that it teaches us what the most important things in our lives are and thus we are more likely to gain what we are longing for.
