①Floods are becoming more and more common around the world. The warming climate is leading to heavier rainfall, but could the way that cities are growing be making things worse? Could we design cities in a different way to reduce the risk of flooding?
②As cities get larger, and more and more land is under concrete (混凝土), less water is taken in and more needs to be carried away by storm drains (雨水渠) and sewerage systems (下水道系统). As there is more water than they can be filled with, the risk of flash flooding increases.
③Could it be that we’ve been taking the wrong way? Chinese landscape designer Yu Kongjian certainly thinks so. In 2013, he thought of the idea of “sponge cities (海绵城市)”, which are designed to take in water—like a sponge—reducing the risk of sudden floods. Natural solutions are encouraged, using riverside parks and ponds to take in floodwater. Ways inspired by this have been taken by cities across the world. Auckland, in New Zealand, was named the spongiest city in one study. It has built green banks and connected parks instead of the concrete drains around the Oakley creek stream. This has reduced flooding in the nearby housing areas as well as the amount of waste which used to be washed into the sea.
④Auckland has taken a natural way, but a much more high-tech method can be seen in Amsterdam. The Dutch city has fixed blue-green roofs (屋顶) on a number of buildings. These roofs have a layer of plants on the outside, and then layers under which collect and store rainwater. This water can be used by people in the building below to water plants or wash toilets. Smart software can even tell the roofs to release water ahead of upcoming storms to make the system take in more rainwater. It can even know which areas of the city are at most risk and take effective action.
⑤Yu Kongjian describes the sponge city way as using Tai Chi with nature instead of boxing. Questions have been raised as to whether a natural way is enough when faced with increased rain fall globally. What remains to be seen is whether increased size and connection with modern technology can help natural methods save many more people from flooding.
15.Why is rainfall getting heavier around the world?
A.Because cities need more rain water. B.Because cities are getting larger.
C.Because the climate is getting warm. D.Because cities are under concrete.
16.What’s the purpose of “sponge cities”?
A.To help cities save water. B.To develop larger cities.
C.To build more tourist attractions. D.To protect cities from floods.
17.What is the structure of this passage? (1= Paragraph 1, 2= Paragraph 2...)
A. B.
C. D.
18.What’s the writer’s attitude towards the future role of “sponge cities”?
A.Worried. B.Hopeful. C.Uncertain. D.Uncaring.
根据“The warming climate is leading to heavier rainfall”可知,气候变暖导致降雨增多。故选C。
16.细节理解题。根据“In 2013, he thought of the idea of ‘sponge cities (海绵城市)’, which are designed to take in water—like a sponge—reducing the risk of sudden floods.”
根据“Questions have been raised as to whether a natural way is enough when faced with increased rain fall globally. What remains to be seen is whether increased size and connection with modern technology can help natural methods save many more people from flooding.”可知,面对全球降雨量增加,自然方法是否足够,而且现代技术与自然方法结合的效果也还有待观察,因此作者的态度是不确定的。故选C。
C
After three tries, Millie finally passed the first aid test. She remembered her ABCs of what to do when someone is unconscious (昏迷的). Airway: open the airway on the practice dummy (模型). Breathing: check breathing and do rescue (急救) breathing. Circulation (循环): do chest compressions (胸外按压) for circulation. These are the three key steps of CPR (心肺复苏).
Millie told everybody about her new learning and really wanted to test her skills. Every day she kept looking for possible accidents, almost hoping that something bad would happen to someone, just so she could rescue them. One morning, her dad was eating breakfast when suddenly he started coughing, “Finally”, thought Millie, “I have my chance!” But then her dad stopped coughing and he was fine. Millie was down.
Later at school, during lunchtime, her friend Stacy ran to her. “Quick!” She called. “It’s Bobby! He’s unconscious!” Millie ran to help. But all of a sudden, she couldn’t remember her ABCs. “No!” she shouted. Then she took a deep breath and remembered. “A for airways.” She checked his mouth. It was clear. But Bobby was very different from the dummy. As she was about to do step B, she thought, “Oh no. His breath smells.” But she remembered how important it was. She pinched (捏住) his nose and was about to give the mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing when Bobby began laughing and so did Stacy. Millie realized it was all a joke. She hit Bobbie on the arm. She was angry, but then thought and said to her friends, “Well, at least I got to practice, and maybe I’d rather not have to do it in real life, anyway!”
19.How many times did Millie take the first aid test?
A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.
20.Millie was down when her dad stopped coughing because ________.
A.she wanted her dad to have an accident
B.her dad was eating breakfast too fast
C.she didn’t have a chance to try her new skills
D.her dad didn’t like eating breakfast
21.The sentence “His breath smells.” means ________.
A.Millie likes the breath
B.Millie knows Bobby is playing a joke on her
C.Bobby is unconscious
D.Bobby’s breath smells bad and Millie doesn’t like it
22.What’s the main idea about the last paragraph?
A.What is ABCs? B.A joke of helping in emergency.
C.Learning a new skill. D.Something bad happened.
【答案】19.C 20.C 21.D 22.B
【难度】0.4
【知识点】急救、记叙文、个人经历
【导语】本文讲述了Millie学习了急救知识而急切地想帮助他人。
19.细节理解题。根据第一段“After three tries, Millie finally passed the first aid test.”可知,Millie三次尝试后通过急救考试。故选C。
20.推理判断题。根据“thought Millie, ‘I have my chance!’ But then her dad stopped coughing and he was fine. Millie was down.”可知,Millie一直寻找实践机会,父亲停止咳嗽后她感到失望,因为她失去了实践机会。故选C。
21.词句猜测题。根据第三段“ ‘Oh no. His breath smells.’ But she remembered how important it was. She pinched (捏住) his nose and was about to give the mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing when Bobby began laughing and so did Stacy.”
D
It’s impossible for my children to read this, which is lucky for me, because it would give them support for the argument “Can we get a dog or a cat?” Because the research suggests that having one is good for children.
A study published shows that children who had a dog in their first year of life were 13% less likely to develop asthma (哮喘) by the time they were six than those from dog-free families. It is believed that children are more likely to develop allergies (过敏) if they grow up in super-clean environments. This study shows other reasons that increase the risk of asthma, but can still show only an association (联系).
It is reported that 46% of families in the UK have pets, with dogs and then cats the most common animals. The evidence which shows the advantages of having cats is not always the same, but some research still shows that pets make children healthier. A study of 397 Finnish babies in 2012 found that during their first year of life, those whose parents had dogs or cats had fewer colds than those from homes without pets. Dogs offered more protection than cats. The researchers think this is because they brought in more dirt from outside to cause the babies’ immune systems (免疫系统) to work well.
The research also shows that having a pet may make children feel more popular and be more understanding. Older studies found that pets make family members spend more time together and have more “entertainment” they offered as well.
Pets can also help children to learn about responsibility, brush the fur, clean the place they sleep, feed them, take more exercise (if you get a dog) and deal with loss—who can forget when their family pet got a car accident?
In a word, keeping pets is really good for improving children’s health and their qualities. However, I still won’t allow my children to keep a pet at home. After all, both dogs and cats poop (排泄) at home, and they can carry worms or other viruses. Also, it seems that few children look after the animals, they repeatedly asked their parents for help.
23.According to some research, having a pet makes children healthier because ________.
A.they aren’t likely to develop asthma B.they live in a super-clean environment
C.pets can protect them from danger D.dirt makes them guard against the disease better
24.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.There is no good reason for having pets.
B.Having pets also has its disadvantages.
C.Children share the care of pets with parents.
D.Pets may bring happiness to children.
25.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Why can pets make parents healthier?
B.Will having a pet make your parents sick?
C.Does a pet bring more happiness?
D.Is keeping a pet really good for your children?
26.What best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

When it comes to making friends, humans often look for people with similar interests or personalities (性格). According to a recent study, so do flamingos (火烈鸟). 27
Scientist Dr. Paul Rose has already noticed that flamingos seem to form groups. He teamed up with Fionnuala McCully, a scientist in animal behavior. 28 They studied both Chilean and Caribbean flamingos living in a nature reserve in Gloucestershire, England.
Each bird wore a ring around one leg with a special code (编码), so that the scientists could tell them apart. McCully spent months studying their behavior and recording their personalities. She found that aggressive (好斗的) flamingos intimidate (恐吓) others in their friendship groups, while the quieter birds do not. 29 McCully and Rose found that for the Caribbean birds, personality seemed to matter more in friendships than it did for Chilean flamingos. They found this surprising because the two species are very similar in many ways.
The scientists said that it’s important to keep flamingos in a large group so that all personality types are included and each flamingo has the chance to find a like-minded friend. “Humans require friendships to be happy. 30 ” McCully and Rose said.
A.Flamingos might be the same as us.
B.Flamingos might not know if they need friendships.
C.Birds with similar personalities nearly always stay together.
D.Friendships between the long-legged birds can last for years.
E.They wanted to find out why flamingos make friends with some of them but not others.

六、任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Even though we yawn (打呵欠) almost every day, scientists still haven’t fully found out why we do that. Here’s a look at some interesting studies that might help solve this everyday puzzle (谜题).
One idea is that yawning helps us take in more oxygen (氧气); especially when we’re tired. When we yawn, we could refresh our blood with oxygen. However, many scientists are interested in a different thought: cooling the brain. When the brain gets too warm, yawning might act like a natural fan. Opening the mouth wide brings in cool air, and the running of blood during a yawn could help carry heat away from the brain. In a 2007 study, scientists recorded videos of some people yawning with cloths on their eyes. The cloth was either: very warm, very cold or at normal room temperature. The people with warm or normal cloths yawned nine times each, but the people with cold clothes only yawned once. Similarly, a 2014 study found that 42% people yawn in summer while only 18% ones yawn in winter, because hotter weather makes the brain work harder to stay cool.
There is also an interesting fact about yawning. Seeing someone else yawn or even reading about yawning can lead to your own yawns. Scientists think this might have to do with our ability to understand and copy others’ feelings, a skill that helps humans connect socially.
Next time you yawn, ask yourself: Is your body trying to cool your brain, wake itself up, or just share a sleepy time with others? The answer might surprise you!
