People often ask how I got into this business. Well, my parents wanted me to study medicine or economics at university, but at the time I thought law might open more doors, so that's what I did. But life doesn't always work out the way you plan IT. After college, I spent one year in south amErica where I fell in love with growing coco beans. IT is not an easy job because coco beans can be easily affected by weather, much more than other fruit like apples or bananas. In fact, the beans are more like graves, so each year s crop is of a different quality. When I came home, I decided to open a small shop making and selling my own chocolate. That was hard work, I can tell you, because so much can go wrong with chocolate. The hardest st bid is melting IT in the right way, but cooling IT correctly isn't easy either. To learn the trade I said about testing all the chocolate I could find, another thing I like to do is write up my experiments. I keep a diary for this is the key to my success.
C项中的this bad
根据设空处前“..come up with some strategies to

“attract sb.to do sth.”是周定用法,表示“吸引某人做某事”,所以这里用动

Here we will take a look at some of the most famous artists in the West.
Johannes Vermeer
Known as“Master of Light” due to the way he captured(捕捉) how natural light danced on the skin and surfaces of other objects, Johannes Vermeer(1632—1675) was devoted to exploring the everyday moments of the 17th century Dutch Golden Age. Girl with a PearlEarring(1665) is a good example of this tradition. Although he was a relatively successful painter during his lifetime, there are only 34 paintings belonging to him in the world today.
Raphael Sanzio
The School of Athens(1509—1511) is one of the four wall paintings by Italian artistRaphael Sanzio(1483—1520) in a palace called the Stanza della Segnatura. It is considered a masterpiece that celebrates philosophy and classical thought, as it features great Greek minds like Aristotle, Plato, and Ptolemy. The other three wall paintings show the other main branches of knowledge, which include poetry, religion, and law.
Michelangelo Buonarroti
Before Michelangelo Buonarroti(1475—1564) started to paint the Sistine Chapel ceIling,he only finished one painting, The Doni Tondo(1506), which celebrates the marriage ofAgnolo Doni. The bright colors and sculptural modeling of the figures are typical of the Italian artist's painting style.
Henri Matisse
Considered the greatest colorist of the 20th century and a revolutionary artist who helped define modern art, French artist Henri Matisse(1869—1954) first emerged as a Post-Impressionist.Then, in 1904, he led the Fauvism movement, which is French for“wild beasts”. The artists of this movement favored bright colors and expressive brushstrokes over realism.
21. Whose paintings are best-known for showing the effect of natural light?
A. Johannes Vermeer's. B. Henri Matisse’ s.
C. Raphael Sanzio’ s. D. Michelangelo Buonarroti’ s.
22. What is The School of Athens about?
A. Poetry. B. Religion. C. Literature. D. Philosophy.
23. What do the last two artists have in common?
A. They enjoyed painting similar subjects.B. They preferred bright colors.
C. They came from the same country. D. They are well-known Post-Impressionists.
B
In recent years, there has been a noticeable change in the attitude towards animal welfare here in the Philippines, a movement that I hope will lead to lasting, systemic change.
Among the many inspiring and pioneering animal welfare advocates doing the good work here in the country is Rina Ortiz, founder of Biyaya Animal Care, who has a strong understanding of the popular landscape here in the country.
While other animal welfare programs are dependent only on donor funding or government support, Biyaya Animal Care serves as a model on sustainable animal welfare advocacy—operating a pet clinic and using earnings to support over a thousand pets housed in an animal shelter in Alfonso, Cavite.
This, of course, was made possible because Ortiz understands the challenges caused by limited resources— both from the government and the private sector—— in supporting animal welfare, prompting her to find sustainable solutions to support this important cause.
The Biyaya Animal Care model proves the importance of adaptability and resourcefulness.Through a self-sustaining mechanism, Biyaya Animal Care shows that animal welfare doesn't have to be a zero-sum game but rather a cooperation where the private sector can play a more active role in pushing for the cause.
I share Ortiz's passion for sustainable animal welfare advocacy, which is why I introduced the cause to my own workplace, Meralco, and went a step further by institutionalizing it.
Through Meralco, employees are able to contribute to efforts to address the overpopulation problem of homeless cats with neutering(绝育) programs. By doing so, it also contributes to improving public health conditions since controlling the growth of the homeless animal population through neutering helps minimize the risk of rabies(狂犬病). Thus that would not only benefit animals but also contribute to the improvement of community life, public health and safety.
24. How does Biyaya Animal Care support animal rescues?
A. By asking for government funding.
B. By full reliance on public donations.
C. Through operating a pet clinic and using its profits.
D. With the help of other welfare programs.
25. What does the underlined word“prompting” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Inviting. B. Inspiring. C. Promising. D. Helping.
26. What is the author's attitude towards Rina Ortiz's business model?
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. D. Supportive.
27. What can be inferred about animal welfare in the Philippines?
A. Positive changes are taking place.
B. People's concern is decreasing.
C. Resources are plentiful for related work.
D. The private business plays the leading role.
C
New Curtin University-led research has uncovered what may be the oldest direct evidence of ancient hot water activity on Mars, showing the planet may have been habitable at some point in its past.
The study analysed a 4.45 billion-year-old zircon(锆石) grain from the famous Martian meteorite(陨石) NWA 7034, also known as Black Beauty, and found geochemical“fingerprints” of water-rich liquids. Study co-author Dr Aaron Cavosie from Curtın's School of Earth andPlanetary Sciences said the discovery opened up new approaches for understanding ancientMartian overheated-liquid systems associated with magmatism(岩浆), as well as the planet's past habitability.
“We used nano-scale(纳米级) geochemistry to detect elemental evidence of hot water onMars 4.45 billion years ago,” Dr Cavosie said.
“Overheated-liquid systems were essential for the development of life on Earth and our findings suggest Mars also had water, a key factor for habitable environments, during the earliest history of surface formation.”
Through nano-scale imaging, the team identified element patterns in this unique zircon, including iron, aluminium, yttrium and sodium. These elements were added as the zircon formed4.45 billion years ago, suggesting water was present during early Martianmagmatic activity.Dr Cavosie said the research showed that even though Mars’ surface suffered massive meteorite strikes that caused major surface change, water was present during the early Pre-Noachian period, prior to about 4.1 billion years ago.
“A 2022 Curtin study of the same zircon grain found it had been‘shocked’ by a meteorite strike, marking it as the first and only known shocked zircon from Mars,” Dr Cavosie said.“This new study takes us a step further in understanding early Mars, by way of identifying tell-tale signs of water-rich liquids from when the grain formed, providing geochemical markers of water in the oldest known Martian surface.”
28. How does the author mainly present the research findings in the text?
A. By comparing Mars with Earth. B. By giving examples and explanations.
C. By listing a series of scientific experiments.D. By quoting the words of the researchers.
29. What did the nano-scale imaging find in the zircon?
A. Ancient life forms. B. Hot water's location.
C. Specific element patterns. D. Mars' formation time.
30. What can we learn about Mars from the research?
A. Its surface has never changed.
B. It has always been uninhabitable.
C. It might have been life-friendly early.
D. Water only existed on it before 4.45 billion years ago.
31. Where can the text be found?
A. In a science magazine. B. In a novel.
C. In a tourist guidebook. D. In a history book.
D
As we age, our cognitive and motor functions worsen, which in turn affects our independence and overall quality of life. To improve or even remove this condition, research has given rise to many promising technologies.
Among these is non-invasive(无创的) brain stimulation: a term covering a set of techniques that can affect brain functions non-invasively from the outside, without the need for surgery. One such promising technique, in particular, is anodal transcranial direct current stimulation(atDCS).
Now, scientists have identified an important factor affecting an individual's responsiveness to atDCS. The team looked at how native learning abilities determine the effect of brain stimulation applied while learning a motor task. Their findings suggest that individuals with less efficient learning mechanisms benefit more from stimulation, while those with optimal(最优的) learning strategies might experience negative effects.
The researchers employed 40 participants: 20 middle-aged adults(50—65 years old) and20 older adults(over 65). Each group was further divided into those receiving active atDCSand those receiving placebo(安慰剂) stimulation. Over ten days, participants practiced a finger-tapping task designed to study motor list learning at home while receiving atDCS. The task involved copying a numerical list using a keyboard, trying to be as fast and as accurate as possible. The team then used a machine-learning model to classify participants as either“optimal” or“sub-optimal” learners, based on their first performance.
The study found that sub-optimal learners, who were seemingly less efficient at completing the task at the early stages of learning, experienced a quick accuracy improvement while performing the task when receiving atDCS. This effect was not limited to people of a certain age, with sub-optimal learners being found among younger individuals as well.
In contrast, participants with optimal learning strategies, regardless of age, even showed a negative tendency in performance when receiving atDCS. This difference suggests that brain stimulation is more beneficial for individuals who firstly struggle with motor tasks. As such,atDCS seems to possess a restorative rather than a strengthening quality, with important significance for recovery.
32. What is atDCS?
A. A technique only for older adults.
B. A way to transfer something into the brain.
C. A surgical method to improve cognitive functions.
D. A non-invasive brain stimulation technique.
33. What can we conclude from the study about atDCS?
A. It is only useful for older adults in improving motor tasks.
B. It has different effects on people with different learning strategies.
C. It has no significant effects on the performance of any participants.
D. It has a positive effect on the participants who are good at logical thinking.
34. What's the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. The result of the experiment on different age groups.
B. The way to classify participants as different learners.
C. The introduction of the participants and the experimental process.
D. The importance of the finger-tapping task in the study.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Influence of Learning Abilities on the Effect of atDCS
B. The Importance of Motor Tasks in Cognitive Improvement
C. The Development of Non-invasive Brain Stimulation Technologies
D. A Comparative Study of Motor Task Completion in Different Age Groups

How to Overcome Procrastination(拖延)
Procrastination, which is when you put off tasks that you should be focusing on, can stop even the most promising career in its tracks. It can reduce the quality of your work, lead you to miss deadlines, cause others to avoid working with you, and can even damage your reputation. 36
First, it's important to recognize when you' re procrastinating. 37 Perhaps you sit down to work on a high-priority project, and then immediately take a coffee break. Or maybe you wait around to be in the right mood to get started on something. Everyone's different, so pay attention to when you put off a task or project.
38 Are you overwhelmed by the task? Are you so disorganized that you just don't want to get started? Or, are you a perfectionist who thinks you don't have enough knowledge or skills to begin?
Once you understand why you' re procrastinating, come up with some strategies to overcome it. 39 If you' re procrastinating because of disorganization, take time to prioritize your to-do list and then focus on one task at a time. Or if you' re procrastinating because of perfectionism, ask yourself how perfect the work actually has to be.
And don't forget to reward yourself. For example, have a coffee once you' ve completed a task that you' ve been putting off. 40
Remember, it can take a while to overcome a bad habit and establish a new routine, so don't give up.
A. It's a common problem, which can cause many issues.
B. The next step is to think about why you' re procrastinating.
C. The good news is: there's a lot you can do to overcome this bad habit.
D. The longer you wait, the less likely you are to act on what you' ve learned.
E. You might spend a lot of your time working on low-priority tasks from your to-do list.
F. Not only is this motivational, but you' ll realize how good it feels when you actually finish things.
G. If you' re not motivated to get started, think about all of the unpleasant consequences of not completing this task.

It was a peaceful morning. Adam was on his usual jo g at the local park, after which he had to ride his motorcycle home to drop his children—— Amanda, 13, and Jared, 8—— to school.Owing to financial difficulties, he could not afford a car.
After his wife passed away six years ago, Adam was left alone to care for his children.Thankfully, his eldest daughter, Stacey, 22, would help with the breakfast preparation and get the kids ready every morning when he was out jogging.
Adam looked at his watch. He'd have to go home in thirty minutes. He finished another round of the park and was ready to leave when the sight of an elderly lady stopped him in his tracks.
She was struggling up the park stairs, and just as she neared the top, she lost her footing and fell back down, rolling awkwardly.
“Ma’ am!” Adam ran over to the woman quickly. “Are you OK?”
“I'm fine; it was just a little fall,” she replied, but Adam worried she wasn't fine. He offered to call the ambulance, but she refused.
“Please let me take you to a nearby clinic on my motorcycle,” he said, offering his arm to her, and she agreed.
They began to chat on their way to the clinic, and the woman introduced herself as Alice. She said she had lost her husband, Frank, for a few years. Her husband was in a business that helped families move. After he passed away, his truck was parked in the garage.
Adam knew how it felt to lose a loved one and he opened up to Alice about his wife, too.As they reached the clinic, the doctor there told Alice that she was fine. Then Adam sent the woman home. Alice wanted to thank Adam so she asked for his address. “I just want to send you something for your kids, and thank you,” she said. Adam hesitantly gave her his address and hurried home to his children.
