Part of the reason why predicting (预测) earthquakes is so difficult comes from the fact that we don ‘t know much about the process that causes them :plate tectonics. Earth’s shell is made up of several moving tectonic plates. Scientists can only guess, however, about when and how the process began. Scientists guess that tectonic activity began around three billion years ago. What really happened to dinosaurs? What, exactly, caused dinosaurs to meet their end 65million years ago? There are a couple of widespread theories (理论): one suggests that a small planet that moves around the sun struck Earth. The other suggests that it was a series of volcanic eruptions. In either case, though, the result would have been fairly the same: dust would have blocked out (遮挡) the sun, hurting life -giving processes like photosynthesis (光合作用). Will we ever be able to predict earthquakes? We still haven’t been able to come up with a way to exactly predict earthquakes. We can certainly try, but our current technology cannot predict them exactly. We know that earthquakes start when rocks crack underground and send earthquake waves toward the surface, but we haven’t figured out why that happens, or how to predict it. How did the moon form? Many scientists believe that the moon came to be because of a knock between the forming Earth and a slightly smaller protoplanet (原行星). However, the moon ‘s chemical makeup is very similar to that of Earth, which suggests that the moon was actually formed from a large piece of the planet Earth itself. Another theory, suggesting that the moon was a separate body that was pulled into Earth’s orbit, provides the best explanation for why only one side of the moon faces us. 1. What is the generally accepted cause of the extinction of dinosaurs? A. Loss of sunshine. B. Sun movement. C. Serious pollution. D. Great climate change. 2. What do the first and third mysteries have in common? A. They make a guess about tectonic activity. B. They are about the early state of the earth. C They try to figure out why earthquakes happen. D. They suggest it is difficult to predict earthquakes. 3. What indicates the moon was formed from a large piece of Earth? A. Their different forces of gravity. B. Their similar chemical makeup. C. Their different sizes. D. Their similar orbits. B Deadly wildfires damaged Maui, Hawaii, and at least 55 people died. Social media was filled with people looking for their loved ones. As things developed, other heartfelt pleas (请求) were also appearing online : Pet owners who were lucky enough to escape from the fire but could not take their pets with them were asking for help. “If there was any chance that they were alive and out there, please help me find them. We left in such a rush because the fire was right behind us. My heart hurt so much,” wrote Lily, posting photos of her cats on Facebook. “Please keep a lookout for our dogs that we love more than anything,” John wrote, attaching photos of two dogs. In response thousands of people were giving support. Many tried to spread awareness about found animals. “The community has just stepped up (主动站出来) like crazy. They’ve shown their support in different ways,” said Katie Shannon, Maui Humane Society’s marketing director. “It’s really inspiring to see how many residents care.” A dog was rescued by a local volunteer firefighter. The dog arrived at the Maui Humane Society with serious burns on her body. Shannon said, “She was stable (病情稳定的) and in our care. She was one of the lucky ones. Thousands of other displaced (流离失所的) animals probably wouldn’t make it out alive.” Given that the shelter was already at full capacity (容纳能力) , staff put out a plea on social media, asking for much needed donations and help, so they could free up space at the shelter and get needed supplies. In less than 24 hours, the organization raised more than $280,000. Many local residents offered to keep displaced animals and more than 100 animals were taken in by volunteers. People also donated dog and cat food and other important supplies. 4. Why did Lily and John post photos online? A. To encourage locals to care for displaced pets. B. To show how displaced pets were cared for. C. To ask people to help them find their pets. D. To find owners for pets in a local shelter. 5. What might be Katie Shannon’s attitude towards local residents? A. Caring. B. Grateful. C. Expectant. D. Unbelievable. 6. What happened after the shelter was full? A. A new shelter was founded. B. Local people rushed to offer support. C. The organization looked for more volunteers. D. The homeless pets were given to pet food stores. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. Wildfires damaged thousands of homes in Maui B. Countless pets were left behind or died in Maui C. Organizations offered shelters in Maui D. People in Maui saved displaced pets C Antarctica(南极洲)is a great, icy land mass, surrounded by the huge Southern Ocean. The ice in Antarctica doesn’t just cover the land. There’s also a huge area of sea ice which floats on the ocean’s surface. However, scientists have reported that Antarctica’s sea ice is at a record low level. That’s worrying because the sea ice is an important part of the Earth’s cooling system. When it’s frozen, sea ice throws sunlight back out into space. But when the sea ice melts (融化), the water left behind is darker, and takes in and keeps more heat. Every year, the sea ice at the South Pole goes through a cycle (周期) of melting and freezing. In summer, the huge masses of sea ice melt to their smallest point. Over the colder winter months, the sea ice grows and grows until it covers an extremely wide area. For most of this time, Antarctica has seemed to be almost unaffected by the changing weather conditions. In fact, until recent years, Antarctica’s sea ice area mainly set records for growing. That began to change around 2016. Now, for several years, the area of Antarctica’s sea ice has been shrinking. This year, Antarctica’s sea ice was at a new record low — not just by a little bit, but by a lot. The last time Antarctica’s low sea ice set a record at the end of winter was in 1986. And this year, there’s about 398,000 square miles less sea ice than in 1986. Scientists are working hard to better understand Antarctica. It’s not yet clear if the low sea ice level is a short-term problem, or part of climate change. The concern is that the melting sea ice could start a cycle that might cause even more ice to melt. The ice loss problems in Antarctica are fairly recent, but the same is not true at the North Pole, where the low level of sea ice has been a concern for years. But the present situation is now similar in both places. 8. What makes the sea ice important for humans? A. It helps cool the planet. B. It increases the area of land. C. It affects the height of the sea level. D. It has the cycle of melting and freezing. 9. What does the underlined word “shrinking” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Cooling off. B. Moving. C. Breaking up. D. Reducing. 10. What do we know about the low sea ice level in Antarctica? A. It will become a long-term problem. B. It will take time to discover its cause. C. It will lead to rapid changes in climate. D. It will affect its melting-and-freezing cycle. 11. What does the author want to show by mentioning the record of 1986 and the North Pole? A. The influence of Antarctica’s low sea ice level. B. The seriousness of Antarctica’s low sea ice level. C. The importance of dealing with climate change. D. The differences between Antarctica and the North Pole. D Practicing gratitude has many benefits for our well-being (幸福). It’s good for our happiness, and reduces anxiety. If gratitude is good for us personally, then can its benefits spill over from parents to their children and families, too? That’s the question researchers Katherine Nelson-Coffey and John Coffey explored in a study. The researchers surveyed 270 parents in America on the gratitude they felt each day and their well-being — positive emotions like joy and love, and negative emotions like worry and anger. In addition, each day parents were asked about their feelings of life satisfaction and meaning in their lives, as well as how connected they felt to others, and how much freedom they felt, like doing things in their own way. The researchers also surveyed how much closeness parents felt toward their children. In analyzing these data, researchers found that parents tended to experience greater daily well-being — more positive emotions, life satisfaction, meaning in their lives, connectedness to others, and freedom — on days when they felt more gratitude than usual. Besides, parents tended to feel greater closeness and less conflict (冲突) with their children on days when they felt more gratitude than usual. In a second related study, the researchers divided over 600 parents into three different groups. The first group was asked to write a general gratitude letter to someone. In the second group, parents wrote a gratitude letter about someone who made them feel accepted or protected. The last group wrote about their activities from the past week. Immediately after the writing activity and one week later, parents were surveyed on their well-being and closeness with their children. The results? Parents who wrote either type of gratitude letter tended to experience greater positive emotions immediately, and, in turn, experienced greater well-being one week later. They also experienced greater closeness to their children, satisfaction with their parenting and fewer challenging child behaviors, one week later. These studies show that gratitude can help parents by “filling up their cups” with positive emotions, which can make them make efforts to be their best possible selves. When parents’ well-being is nurtured (培养), their families can benefit. 12. What is the study aimed at? A. Showing the benefits of gratitude for our well-being. B. Finding how parents build good family relationships. C. Exploring the positive impact of parental gratitude. D. Presenting parental confusion about gratitude. 13. What were the parents asked to do during the two studies? A. Share their parenting experiences. B. Report their feelings and emotions. C. Voice their opinions on their children. D. Write a gratitude letter in a certain way. 14. What would happen to grateful parents according to the study? A. Enjoying good relationships with their children. B Showing greater kindness to people around them. C. Having better ability to make a difference in life. D. Expressing a strong desire to share feelings with others. 15. What does the author focus on in the last paragraph? A Explaining a phenomenon. B. Offering suggestions. C. Making a summary (总结). D. Presenting (陈述) a fact. (每小题2.5分共12.5分) People have been traveling for centuries, seeking new experiences and sights. I scared him, and he would cry. I don’t remember exactly why I thought scaring him was so funny. It was probably because of the fact that when I ran out and shouted “boo”, especially if I hid well and got him as he wandered past, lost in his three-year-old thoughts, he would jump into the air like a shocked frog. This method provided years of youthful fun, but over time I found it increasingly harder to scare my little brother. He was just getting too old to be frightened. I tried to change my strategies, but failed. Sadly, all good things must end. I announced peace and said sorry to my younger brother and he took it very well. I should have realized that I wouldn’t get away with my previous bad behavior so easily. I would pay for what I did. Finally, I was shocked and frightened by Daniel. One afternoon, Daniel was racing down a steep (陡峭的) hill on a bike. All of a sudden, the handlebars (车把手) fell off on his hands. He had no helmet (头盔) on. He fell onto the shoulder of the road. Daniel lay there with blood flowing. After a while, his friends arrived and managed to send him to the nearest hospital. They called the rest of my family, except for me. When I came home from school, I found an empty house. It didn’t surprise me since it was normal in my family. Mom and Dad often worked late, and Daniel usually stayed at a friend’s house in the afternoons. My older brother Fred usually showed up by dinnertime. I liked having the quiet house all to myself. It meant I could listen to my music as loud as I wanted. On that day, however, I couldn’t pay attention to my music. Somehow, I felt so worried and unhappy. When it was getting really late, Fred came home. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I was frightened to see that Daniel lost his teeth completely. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2023—2024学年高一第二学期末考试 英语科试卷 注意事项: 1. 1.Where does the conversation probably take place? Social media was filled with people looking for their loved ones. As things developed, other heartfelt pleas (请求) were also appearing online : Pet owners who were lucky enough to escape from the fire but could not take their pets with them were asking for help. “If there was any chance that they were alive and out there, please help me find them. We left in such a rush because the fire was right behind us. My heart hurt so much,” wrote Lily, posting photos of her cats on Facebook. “Please keep a lookout for our dogs that we love more than anything,” John wrote, attaching photos of two dogs. In response, thousands of people were giving support. People in Maui saved displaced pets 【答案】4. C 5. B 6. B 7. A 9. D 10. B 11. 由文章第二段中“That’s worrying because the sea ice is an important part of the Earth’s cooling system. When it’s frozen, sea ice throws sunlight back out into space. But when the sea ice melts (融化), the water left behind is darker, and takes in and keeps more heat. (这令人担忧,因为海冰是地球冷却系统的重要组成部分。当海冰结冰时,它会将阳光反射回太空。但当海冰融化时,留下的水颜色更暗,吸收并保留了更多的热量。)”可知,海冰对人类重要是因为它有助于给地球降温。故选A。 由划线词所在句的前一句“In fact, until recent years, Antarctica’s sea ice area mainly set records for growing. (事实上,直到最近几年,南极洲的海冰面积一直在不断增长。)”和第四段中“This year, Antarctica’s sea ice was at a new record low — not just by a little bit, but by a lot. (今年,南极洲的海冰创下了历史新低——不仅减少了一点点,而且减少了很多。)”可知,南极洲的海冰面积之前一直在增长,而今年却达到了新低,说明海冰面积开始减少。因此,shrinking应意为“减少”。A. Cooling off冷却;B. Moving移动;C. Breaking up分手;D. 由文章第五段中“It’s not yet clear if the low sea ice level is a short-term problem, or part of climate change. (目前尚不清楚低海冰水平是一个短期问题,还是气候变化的一部分。)”可知,南极洲海冰水平低的原因还需要时间来发现。故选B。 11题详解】 推理判断题。由文章第四段“This year, Antarctica’s sea ice was at a new record low — not just by a little bit, but by a lot. The last time Antarctica’s low sea ice set a record at the end of winter was in 1986. And this year, there’s about 398,000 square miles less sea ice than in 1986. (今年,南极洲的海冰创下了历史新低——不仅减少了一点点,而且减少了很多。上一次南极洲的海冰在冬末创下纪录是在1986年。今年,海冰面积比1986年减少了39.8万平方英里。)”和最后一段“The ice loss problems in Antarctica are fairly recent, but the same is not true at the North Pole. where the low level of sea ice has been a concern for years. But the present situation is now similar in both places. (南极洲的冰损失问题是最近才出现的,但北极的情况并非如此。那里的海冰水平过低多年来一直是人们关注的问题。但是现在两地的情况是相似的。)”可知,作者提及1986年的记录和北极的情况是为了显示南极洲海冰水平降低的严重性,即这一问题不仅在南极洲出现,在北极也长期存在,且现在两者情况相似。故选B。 D Practicing gratitude has many benefits for our well-being (幸福). These studies show that gratitude can help parents by “filling up their cups” with positive emotions which can make them make efforts to be their best possible selves. B. Showing greater kindness to people around them. C. Having better ability to make a difference in life. D. Expressing a strong desire to share feelings with others. 15. What does the author focus on in the last paragraph? A. Explaining a phenomenon. B. Offering suggestions. C. Making a summary (总结). D. Presenting (陈述) a fact. 12. C 13. B 14. A 15. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 When it was getting really late, Fred came home. He told me everyone was at the hospital and that Daniel had an accident. At first, I didn’t feel anything serious since Daniel often had small accidents and injuries. “He’s seriously injured,” Fred continued. Suddenly, I was frightened. “How serious?” I asked. Yet he just told me how he had the accident. That night, it was the first time that I had been terribly scared and concerned about Daniel. The next day, I rushed to the hospital. I was frightened to see that Daniel lost his teeth completely. His skin was horribly scarred, and his face was swollen-black, blue and red. Heart-broken, I cried. I was afraid that he wouldn’t recover. Amazingly, he finally recovered. His porcelain teeth were perfect; his skin healed without even the hint of a scar. One day, seeing my younger brother who had recovered his health, I said, “I won’t scare you anymore, so don’t scare me any more, dear Daniel.” Then I hugged him tightly, afraid that he’d suffer again and that I’d lose him. 词汇激活 行为类 ①告诉:tell sb/let sb know/inform sb ②奔向:rush to/ dash toward ③看见,发现:see/spot/find 情绪类 ①感到害怕:be frightened /feel frightened/feel scared ②担忧某人:be concerned about/be worried about 【点睛】[高分句型1] At first, I didn’t feel anything serious since Daniel often had small accidents and injuries.(运用了since引导的原因状语从句) [高分句型2] Then I hugged him tightly, afraid that he’d suffer again and that I’d lose him.(运用了that引导的宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
