Start the Day Right
Fibre plays a vital role in our health, but many of us aren’t getting enough — only about 4% of UK adults meet the recommended 30g daily. Granola (麦片) can be a great way to start your morning with a fibre-rich boost, but shop-bought versions are often pricey and packed with sugar. This homemade granola, however, is not only full of fibre, but also rich in nutrients, plant points, healthy fats, and protein.
The healthy bit
Fibre deserves far more attention. It’s essential for a happy gut, steady energy, and balanced hormones. This recipe provides a variety of fibres to keep you fuller for longer, slow the release of sugar into your bloodstream, and support healthy digestion. This granola is also a fantastic source of soluble (水溶性的) fibre; this attracts water to form a gel-like substance in the digestive tract, binding to fatty acids and supporting healthy metabolism (新陈代谢).
For other easy ways to increase your fibre intake, try filling half your plate with two or three different vegetables (and some fruit) at each meal. Adding nuts, beans, or lentils to dishes, and keeping a jar of mixed seeds on the table to sprinkle over meals, can also make a big difference.
21. What is a downside of shop-bought granola?
A. It has few nutrients. B. It is difficult to store for long.
C. It lacks fibre and protein. D. It is high in sugar and expensive.
22. How long does the homemade granola need to be baked in total?
A. 5 minutes. B. 25 minutes. C. 35 minutes. D. 40 minutes.
23. What benefit does soluble fibre in the granola bring?
A. It boosts your appetite. B. It promotes healthy metabolism.
C. It aids sugar absorption. D. It transforms gel-like substances.

Eating a traditional Mediterranean-type diet-rich in foods such as seafood, fruit, and nuts- -may help reduce the risk of dementia (痴呆) by almost a quarter, a new study has revealed.
Experts at Newcastle University found that individuals who ate a Mediterranean-like diet had up to 23% lower risk for dementia than those who did not. This research, published today in the journal BMC Medicine, is one of the biggest studies of its kind.
Scientists analyzed data from 60,298 individuals from the UK Biobank, including individuals from across the UK, who had completed a dietary assessment. The authors scored individuals based on how closely their diet matched the key features of a Mediterranean one. The participants were allowed for almost a decade, during which time there were 882 cases of dementia.
The authors considered each individual’s genetic risk for dementia by estimating what is known as their polygenic (多基因的) risk-a measure of all the different genes that are related to the risk of dementia. They found that there were similar associations between sticking to Mediterranean diet and dementia risk in individuals with higher and lower genetic risk for this condition, which may indicate that even for those with a higher genetic risk, having a better diet could reduce the likelihood of developing the condition.
Dr Janice Ranson, joint lead author on the paper, said: “Dementia impacts the lives of millions of individuals throughout the world, and there are currently limited options for treating this condition. Our study shows a Mediterranean diet that has a high intake of healthy plant-based foods may be important for future strategies to reduce dementia risk. For example, the dementia prevention efforts could go beyond general healthy diet advice and focus on choosing specific foods and nutrients.”
The authors caution that their analysis is limited to individuals who self-reported their ethnic background as white, British or Irish, as genetic data was only available based on European countries, and that further research is needed in a range of populations to determine the potential benefit.
24. What did scientists do during the study?
A. They scored the Mediterranean diet.
B. They tracked the participants’ health.
C. They collected data from 60298 families.
D. They selected 882 potential dementia cases.
25. What can we infer about the Mediterranean diet from paragraph 4?
A. Its effect is closely related to the polygenic risk.
B. It increases one’s chance of developing dementia.
C. It can reduce dementia risk regardless of one’s genetic risk.
D. It can provide protection against various genetic diseases.
26. What are Dr Janice Ranson’s words mainly about?
A. Values of the study. B. Features of the study.
C. Elements of a healthy diet. D. Ways to deal with dementia.
27. What will further research most probably focus on?
A. Finding out more benefits of the Mediterranean diet.
B. Applying the findings to the treatment of dementia.
C. Involving participants of diverse races and nationalities.
D. Studying the rate of dementia within different age groups.

The South Pole has been warming at more than three times the global average over the past 30 years, according to research led by Ohio University professor Ryan Fogt, and Kyle Clem, who is a current postdoctoral research fellow in climate science. According to the study, this warming period was mainly driven by natural tropical (热带的) climate variability and was likely strengthened by increases in greenhouse gases.
Clem and his team analyzed weather station data at the South Pole, as well as climate models to examine the warming in the Antarctic interior (内陆). They found that between 1989 and 2018, the South Pole had warmed by about 1. 8℃ over the past 30 years at a rate of +0. 6℃ per decade—three times the global average.
The study also found that the strong warming over the Antarctic interior in the last 30 years was mainly driven by the tropics, especially warm ocean temperatures in the western tropical Pacific Ocean that changed the winds in the South Atlantic near Antarctica and increased the delivery of warm air to the South Pole. They suggest these atmospheric changes along Antarctica's coast are an important mechanism driving climate anomalies (异常事物) in its interior.
Clem and Fogt argue that these warming trends were unlikely the result of natural climate change alone, stressing the effects of added warming related to human activities on top of the large tropical climate signal on Antarctic climate have worked together to make this one of the strongest warming trends worldwide.
“From the very beginning, Kyle and I worked very well together and were able to accomplish more as a team than we were individually,” Fogt said. “We have published every year together since 2013, with one of our continuing collaborations being the annual State of the Climate reports. Our work on this project together each year ultimately led to this publication documenting the warming at the South Pole. However, most importantly for my family and me, apart from being a fantastic scientist and collaborator, Kyle is also considered as one of our closest friends.”
28. What is the major cause of the South Pole's warming according to the research?
A. The weather station. B. Lack of winds.
C. Increases of greenhouse gases. D. Natural tropical climate change.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The tropical climate signals in the Antarctic interior.
B. The effect of human activities on the warming trends.
C. The detailed explanation for the South Pole's warming.
D. The unpleasant consequences of natural climate change.
30. Which of the following does Fogt most probably agree on?
A. Cooperation is valued in scientific research.
B. Getting science paper published is difficult.
C. Friendship is more important than science.
D. Family support plays a key role in science.
31. From which is the text most probably taken?
A. A chemistry textbook. B. A science magazine.
C. A travel brochure. D. A science novel.

A third of the Arctic’s tundra (北极冻土), forests and wetlands have become a source of carbon emissions (排放), a new study has found, as global heating ends thousands of years of carbon storage.
For thousands of years, Arctic land ecosystems have acted as a deep-freeze, holding potential emissions in the tundra. But ecosystems in the region are releasing more CO2 into the atmosphere with rising temperatures, a study published in Nature Climate Change concluded.
More than 30% of the region was a source of CO2, according to the analysis, rising to 40% when emissions from wildfires were included. By using data from 200 study sites between 1990 and 2020, the research demonstrates how the Arctic’s tundra, forests and wetlands are being transformed by rapid warming.
The shift is occurring despite the Arctic becoming greener. “One place where I work in Alaska, when the tundra unfreezes, the plants that absorb CO2 grow more, so you can sometimes get an uptick in carbon storage”, Sue Natalia, the lead researcher said. “But the tundra continues to unfreeze and the microbes (微生物) take over. You can visually see the changes in the landscape.”
There is a growing concern about the natural processes that regulate the Earth’s climate, which are being affected by rising temperatures. Together, the planet’s oceans, forests, soils and other natural carbon sinks absorb about half of all human emissions, but there are signs that these sinks are under stress.
The Arctic ecosystem has been gathering carbon for thousands of years, helping cool the atmosphere. In a warming world, the researchers say, its carbon cycle is beginning to change and needs better monitoring. Dr Anna Virkkala, the author of the study, said, “The carbon in the Arctic soil is close to half of the Earth’s soil carbon pool, much more than in the atmosphere. This huge pool should ideally stay in the ground. But now, rising temperatures are speeding the breakdown of plant and animal remains, which releases stored carbon back into the air as greenhouse gases like CO2, creating a cycle that fuels even more warming.”
32. What’s the main reason for the release of carbon from Arctic soils?
A. Tundra defrosting. B. Wildfire erupting.
C. Tree over-cutting. D. Wetland disappearing.
33. What does the underlined word “uptick” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Boost. B. Loss. C. Limit. D. Release.
34. What can we infer about the Arctic’s soil carbon pool according to Dr Anna Virkkala?
A. It has less carbon than the air. B. It ought to be stored in the tundra.
C. It can break down organic matter. D. It is less affected by global warming.
35. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Arctic greening cuts carbon emissions. B. More carbon is being released in Arctic.
C. Arctic carbon storage is growing rapidly. D. Extreme climate makes Arctic inhabitable.

A couple of months before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy would ask for: a cellphone. I lived on that phone all summer. I always texted my friends, even at night. And I paid no attention to the people and things around myself. Being connected to the Internet was more important than being present.
So, you can imagine my displeasure when I learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year. It was not the Disneyland trip or beach vacation that I had been hoping for.“This year,” my dad said, “we’ll be doing something special, something I used to do with my dad when I was a kid. We’re going camping in the forest!”
His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh (失望的叹息),which was my communication style at that age. But he had made the decision and would not change his mind. I comforted myself by telling myself that it was still a vacation. I remained uninfluenced when they were busy preparing for the vacation.
My mind was on my phone, the texts flying back and forth. I focused on the screen in my hands so much that the first time I looked up was when we drove across a bridge on the trip to our campsite.
I looked out of the window and saw a fast-moving river. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot and smelt of trees. But that didn't matter to me. The reason why I had looked up was for something far more serious and annoying. My phone no longer had service. The signal was weak. During the last hour of the drive, there was no signal at all.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
My dad explained he had chosen a campsite that had no phone service.

D 22. C 23. B

A 33. A 34. B 35. B

But now, rising temperatures are speeding the breakdown of plant and animal remains, which releases stored carbon back into the air as greenhouse gases like CO2, creating a cycle that fuels even more warming.”(该研究的作者安娜·维尔卡拉博士说:“北极土壤中的碳含量接近地球土壤碳库的一半,远远超过大气中的碳含量。
根据第一段“A third of the Arctic’s tundra (北极冻土), forests and wetlands have become a source of carbon emissions (排放), a new study has found, as global heating ends thousands of years of carbon storage.(一项新的研究发现,由于全球变暖终结了数千年的碳储存,北极三分之一的苔原、森林和湿地已经成为碳排放的来源)”结合文章主要说明了因为气温上升,导致北极地区的苔原解冻,从而释放出了更多的二氧化碳。

此处为that引导的定语从句,先行词 papers(论文)与 publish是被动关系,且时间状语“in April this year”表示过去,因此用一般过去时的被动语态were published。

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you an art class I had in a park last Friday.
We were tasked to draw or paint something that impressed us most. Inspired by the fantastic scenery, I decided to create a watercolor painting of the small bridge over the park’s pond, surrounded by blooming flowers.
The entire experience was incredibly refreshing. Being surrounded by nature not only sparked my creativity but also offered a much-needed break from the usual hustle and bustle of school life. I felt a deep sense of peace as I painted.
In a word, it was not just an art class; it was a moment of connection with nature that I truly cherished.
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
My dad explained he had chosen a campsite that had no phone service.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, without checking my phone as usual, I fixed my mind on nature around myself.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
My dad explained he had chosen a campsite that had no phone service. I realized my phone would be useless until we returned home. I would be trapped in the forest for four days with no way to connect myself with the outside world. I went from an unhappy state to anger. However, that couldn’t make my phone receive the signal. I went to bed angrily that first night. But when I awoke in the morning, something had changed.
The next morning, without checking my phone as usual, I fixed my mind on nature around myself. My dad and I hiked through the forest, enjoying nature. We went fishing and swimming. I listened to stories of Dad's life. When the vacation came to an end, I realized I hadn't thought of my phone once. It dawned on me that I needed to value the moments with nature and the important persons in life. With this lesson carried to this day, I regularly pack up the tent and drive until my phone shows words: “No service.”
