Open an encyclopedia? Click on to the internet? These days, most people go straight to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia. But how reliable (可靠) is it? There’s no denying the popularity and usefulness of Wikipedia. It attracts 78 million visitors every month, and the site is available (可用的) in more than 270 different languages. It’s one of the most comprehensive (综合的 ) resources available, and it’s got much more information than an ordinary encyclopedia. The site is updated on a daily basis by thousands of people around the world. Anyone with an internet connection can log on and edit the contents or add a new page. And you don’t need any formal training. Of course, there are some controls. Wikipedia has a team of more than 1,500 administrators (管 理员) who check for false information. But with more than 16 million articles to keep an eye on, it isn’t easy. So, while Wikipedia benefits from being constantly updated with information from all over the world, it’s also open to “vandals” (故意破坏公物的人). Some of the damage is easy to notice. One prankster (恶作剧者 ) drew devil horns and a moustache on Microsoft chairman Bill Gate’s photo, while another edited Greek philosopher Plato’s biography to say he was a “Hawaiian weather man”. But other things are harder to spot. The most common form of vandalism involves adding tiny items of false information into the biography of a famous person. Some of this misinformation has even appeared in newspapers, with The Daily Mail, The Guardian and The Independent all having fallen victim (牺牲者) to the pranks. For example, in an introduction for British comedian Sir Norman Wisdom, one newspaper claimed that he co-wrote Dame Vera Lynn’s wartime hit “There’ll be Bluebirds over the White Cliffs of Dover”. He did no such thing. And in another article, it was reported that TV theme tune composer Ronnie Hazlehurst had written the song “Reach”. Once again, not true. So, if you’re going to use any information from Wikipedia, make sure you double-check it first. 31.If you want to look something up on Wikipedia, you will find ________. A.it is only available in English B.it has little useful information C.you can only get the information online D.you need to go to a library to use it 32.According to the article, what is NOT an advantage enjoyed by Wikipedia over that of an ordinary encyclopedia? 【八年级英语试题共 6页】 第 3页 A.It is available online in many different languages. B.It may contain more false information than an ordinary encyclopedia. C.It has a team of administrators to check for false information. D.It’s content can be updated every day. 33.The examples of the pranks are cited (引用) to ________. A.let you know that false information is inevitable on the site B.urge Wikipedia to set stricter controls over its contents C.criticize the right that the public has to edit the contents on the site D.demonstrate the downsides of public editing allowed by Wikipedia 34.It can be learned from the article that ________. A.pranksters aren’t likely to edit the information about famous people B.some mainstream newspapers also refer to the false information from Wikipedia C.the public is not allowed by Wikipedia to edit the information about famous people D.the Wikipedia administrators don’t work hard enough to check for false information on the site 35.What can we learn from the last paragraph? A.We should not use Wikipedia. B.The information from Wikipedia is not reliable. C.We should not trust the information from Wikipedia. D.We should make sure the information from Wikipedia is correct before deciding to use it. C Gever Tulley is a computer scientist from California. In 2005, he started a summer programme for children called Tinkering School. The idea was that children can learn important skills for life by building things together. Gever Tulley and his team help the children to think big and create plans for new things they want to build. Children have made fantastic things since the school started. They have built a rollercoaster. They have made a rope bridge from plastic shopping bags. They have made tree houses, wooden motorbikes and boats. At Tinkering School, children get all kinds of materials like wood, metal, plastic, nails and ropes. They get lots of real tools too, such as knives, hammers, screwdrivers and power drills. Some children have cut themselves when using a knife, or hurt their fingers when using a hammer. Tinkering School has been around for many years now, but nobody has ever had a serious injury in all those years. This is because there are strict health and safety rules they must follow. The children always learn how to use the tools safely and they must wear the right clothing and protection at all times. Gever Tulley’s ideas have worked very well. A lot of children have gone to his summer schools over the years. In 2011, Gever Tulley decided to create a “real” school, called Brightworks, in San Francisco. The school is very small—it only has 20 students aged 6 to 13. Brightworks is based on the same principles (理念) as Tinkering School. Since it started, Brightworks has been written about a lot. Most of those articles have been very positive. They have praised (表扬) the quality of the school. They have found the children are more active than at many other schools. But there have also been critical (批评的 ) voices. Some people have said that children are not learning enough at Brightworks. They feel that students and teachers are just “playing around” all the time. The students at Brightworks seem to love their school. We spoke to 12-year-old Tina Cooper. She has been a student at the school since last October. “Since I started here, I’ve never sat in a ‘normal’ class with a teacher.” she told us. “But it’s been a very exciting experience. I’ve worked hard at my new school for eight months now, and there hasn’t been one single moment when I found it boring. Before, I was bored quite often.” 36.Which is the best description of Tinkering School? A.A school where children are taught different subjects by different teachers. B.A school where children learn important life skills by building things together. C.A factory where children get interested in building things by working together. D.A factory where children learn about how to use the tools safely by following rules. 37.Which is TRUE about safety at Tinkering School? A.The school isn’t safe for kids at all. B.Children have never hurt themselves badly. C.Children have never had an accident or injury. D.No safety information has been mentioned there. 38.Read the underlined sentences and infer (推断) what might Gever Tulley say to these people? A.Children also need to follow strict school rules like wearing uniforms. B.All children will learn to build rollercoasters, rope bridges and boats here. C.Children can plan to make things and learn much by doing things in teams. D.Most articles say that children are more serious here than at many other schools. 39.What does Tina Cooper think of the life at Brightworks? A.It changes her ideas about school life. B.It makes her feel bored from time to time. C.It makes her love San Francisco even more. D.It seems as normal as her school life before. 40.From the passage, children there are likely to learn the following things EXCEPT ______. A.Teamwork is important in our work B.We should be careful when using tools 【八年级英语试题共 6页】 第 4页 C.It is important in life to eat healthy food D.It is important to be friendly and help others D Even though the world has made great efforts to protect African elephants, many of them are still being killed for their ivory. At the end of the 1970s, over 1.3 ivory million elephants walked around Africa. But today, their numbers have fallen to around 450, 000. This is mainly caused by illegal (非法的) hunting for ivory. Need for ivory in markets, especially in Asia and Africa, continues to push the illegal trade (贸易). This has resulted in the deaths of at least 20, 000 African elephants each year. Ivory, also known as “white gold”, has long been regarded as precious. Because of its unusual look, people often use it to make expensive things, such as jewellery, musical instruments and art. And the ivory material itself can stand the test of time. That’s why many people are willing to pay high prices for ivory products. However, no matter how much real ivory is sold for, it’s certainly not worth the harm to elephants. So some scientists are working hard on creating the same beauty of ivory with no killing. Thaddäa Rath and her team at the University of Vienna have created the man-made ivory called “Digory”. It is made from synthetic resin (合成树脂) and calcium phosphate particles (磷酸钙颗粒). First, they use a 3D printer to make the shape. Then they color-match and stain (着色) it. Finally, they polish (抛光) it to make it look like real natural ivory. Although the chemical structure of Digory is completely different from that of the natural ivory, it looks so real that it is hard to tell the difference by eye. Fritz Vollrath, a biologist from the UK, felt excited about the invention for the fact that Digory could save many elephants from risks. He said, “We hope that, by doing more research, Digory will soon be accepted and used worldwide. And I believe that technology like this will play an important role in wildlife protection.” 41.Why does the writer list some numbers in Paragraph 1? A.To present the number of elephants in Africa. B.To introduce the ivory markets in Asia and Africa. C.To explain the reasons for the illegal trade of ivory. D.To show the dangerous situation of African elephants. 42.What does the underlined word “precious” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Modern. B.Valuable. C.Beautiful. D.Traditional. 43.What do we know about Digory from Paragraph 4? a. Why Digory is invented. b. How Digory is created. c. What Digory is made from. d. Whether Digory looks real. A.abc B.acd C.bcd D.abd 44.Which of the following does Fritz Vollrath agree? A.Digory will save all the elephants from risks. B.It’s hard for the world to accept man-made ivory. C.It will take long to make Digory used worldwide. D.Technology will support the protection of wildlife. 45.Which is the right structure of the text? They worked all day, so we didn’t spend much time together. This made my mom sad, so one day she advised us to move to the countryside. My dad and I agreed. Soon she found a big farmhouse near a forest, but it was shabby and old. It didn’t have a roof (屋顶) and it even didn’t have any bathrooms! I thought she couldn’t be serious, but she was. After a lot of hard work, my parents turned it into a homestay (民宿) and we moved there. Our homestay has five comfortable bedrooms for visitors. It is open from March to November. The rooms aren’t always full on weekdays. But on weekends, there are lots of visitors from the city. People love to come and relax here. When we first moved here, I often missed my friends and my school. But now I go to the village school and I have lots of new friends. Sometimes I go to the city and visit my old friends, but I don’t like being in the city anymore. I enjoy the life here. People sometimes ask me if I get bored with the life in the countryside. I will invite them to come and stay in our homestay for a few days and let them find the answer themselves. That day, I helped them pick fresh vegetables from our garden for their dinner. While we were cooking together in the kitchen, they shared stories about their busy life in the city. Listening to them, I felt even more grateful for my life in the countryside. It’s full of simple joys that city life just can’t compare with. 75. My Life in the Countryside 6、 书面表达(共1题,计20分) 76. 例文: Urban or rural There has always been a heated debate about whether urban life or rural life is better. After careful consideration and drawing on my own experiences, I firmly hold the view that rural life has more to offer. Last winter vacation, I paid a visit to my uncle's house in the countryside. As soon as I got there, I was greeted by a breathtaking view. The vast stretches of fields were covered with a blanket of snow, like a pristine white canvas. The fresh, crisp air was a far cry from the stuffy, polluted air in the city, and it felt like a breath of fresh life with each inhalation. During my stay, I rolled up my sleeves and got my hands dirty, helping my uncle take care of the livestock. I also joined the local children in exciting sled - riding adventures on the hills and had snowball fights that left us laughing and out of breath. What touched me most was the warmth and friendliness of the rural community. Neighbors would drop by unannounced, bringing along homemade treats and sharing stories, creating a sense of togetherness that is often lacking in the city. In contrast, urban life, despite its many conveniences such as state - of - the - art shopping malls and advanced entertainment facilities, often makes people feel isolated. The fast - paced lifestyle and the constant hustle and bustle can be overwhelming. In the countryside, I found a haven away from the stresses of modern life. I could lie on the grass and gaze at the star - filled sky, lost in thought, or take a leisurely walk along the winding paths, listening to the chirping of birds. All in all, rural life provides not only a chance to escape the concrete jungle but also an opportunity to connect with nature and experience the genuine warmth of human relationships. It is these precious experiences that make me cherish rural life wholeheartedly. Number one. how can I write about IT? Open an encyclopedia? Click on to the internet? These days, most people go straight to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia. But how reliable (可靠) is it? There’s no denying the popularity and usefulness of Wikipedia. It attracts 78 million visitors every month, and the site is available (可用的) in more than 270 different languages. It’s one of the most comprehensive (综合的) resources available, and it’s got much more information than an ordinary encyclopedia. The site is updated on a daily basis by thousands of people around the world. Anyone with an internet connection can log on and edit the contents or add a new page. And you don’t need any formal training. Of course, there are some controls. Wikipedia has a team of more than 1,500 administrators (管理员) who check for false information. But with more than 16 million articles to keep an eye on, it isn’t easy. So, while Wikipedia benefits from being constantly updated with information from all over the world, it’s also open to “vandals” (故意破坏公物的人). Some of the damage is easy to notice. One prankster (恶作剧者) drew devil horns and a moustache on Microsoft chairman Bill Gate’s photo, while another edited Greek philosopher Plato’s biography to say he was a “Hawaiian weather man”. A.It is available online in many different languages. But there have also been critical (批评的) voices. A.Teamwork is important in our work B.We should be careful when using tools C.It is important in life to eat healthy food D.It is important to be friendly and help others D Even though the world has made great efforts to protect African elephants, many of them are still being killed for their ivory.
