On the board are four words: FREE BIKE REPAIR. It started two years ago. On his way to school, Chen Ming's chain (链条) broke. An old man called Uncle Liu fixed it in ten minutes. “How did you learn to do that?” Chen Ming asked. Uncle Liu smiled. “By fixing, and by breaking. Again and again.” After that, Chen Ming spent most weekends at Uncle Liu's small shop. At first he could only pass the tools. He watched, asked questions and wrote everything down in a notebook. Once he tried to fix a wheel alone and made it worse. He felt terrible, but Uncle Liu said, “A mistake is a lesson you can touch.” Last spring, Uncle Liu closed his shop because his eyesight was getting worse. Before he left, he gave Chen Ming a box of tools. Now Chen Ming repairs bikes for neighbours, classmates and even strangers — for free. He asks for nothing, but sometimes people leave fruit or a thank-you note by his board. “Uncle Liu taught me more than how to fix a bike,” Chen Ming says. “He taught me that a small skill can be useful to others. That's why I keep doing it.” 24. How did Chen Ming learn to repair bikes? A. By watching and asking at Uncle Liu's shop. B. By reading books about machines. C. By taking a course at school. D. By fixing his own bike alone. 25. What does the underlined sentence “A mistake is a lesson you can touch” mean? A. Mistakes are easy to forget. B. Tools are more useful than books. C. Give it back to Uncle Liu. D. Put it away and forget about it. (C) Why Does Rain Smell So Good? Have you ever noticed the special smell in the air just before or after a rain? Many people love it. Scientists call it “petrichor” (潮土油). Where does the smell come from? It is not one single thing but a mix of several. First, plants. In dry weather, plants produce oils and keep them on their leaves and in the soil. When raindrops hit the ground, these oils are lifted into the air. Second, bacteria (细菌). A kind of bacteria in the soil produces a substance called geosmin. Our noses can notice geosmin at a very low level — even a few drops in a swimming pool. When rain falls after a long dry spell, the soil releases this smell quickly. Third, lightning. A storm may produce a small amount of ozone (臭氧), which has a clean, sharp smell. That is why the air sometimes smells different during a thunderstorm. The smell is strongest after a long dry period, because the oils and geosmin have had time to build up in the soil. A light rain is better than a heavy one: heavy rain washes everything away too quickly. So next time you step outside after a summer shower, take a deep breath. What you are smelling is a conversation between the sky, the soil and the plants. 28. What is petrichor? A. A kind of plant oil. B. A special smell around rain. C. A heavy summer rain. D. A substance in the soil. 29. What does the underlined word “releases” probably mean? A. Takes in. B. Washes away. C. Gives off. D. Picks up. 30. Why is the smell strongest after a long dry period? A. Because the rain is heavier at that time. B. Because plants grow faster in dry weather. C. Because there is more lightning during the rain. D. Because the oils and geosmin have built up in the soil. 31. Which rain brings out the smell best according to the passage? A. A light rain. B. A heavy rain. C. A rain in winter. D. A rain with strong wind. (D) Is Handwriting Still Important? These days, most students type their homework on a computer or a phone. Handwriting seems slow and old-fashioned. So some people ask: do we still need to teach children to write by hand? Supporters of handwriting say yes. Research has shown that when we write by hand, the brain works harder than when we type. We have to remember the shape of each letter and plan how to form it, and this deeper processing may help us remember ideas better. Many students also find that taking notes by hand forces them to choose the most important points, because they cannot write down every word. Others disagree. They point out that typing is faster and that computers can check spelling for us. In a world where most work is done on screens, they say, beautiful handwriting is a nice hobby rather than a necessary skill. Time spent on practising letters, they argue, could be used for reading or maths. Perhaps the answer is not “either-or”. Handwriting and typing are tools, and each is good for different jobs. A quick email is best typed; a thank-you letter is nicer written by hand. What matters is not which tool we use, but whether we have something worth saying. So the real question may not be “Should we still teach handwriting?” but “How can we help children use both tools well?” 32. What do supporters of handwriting say? A. Typing helps students remember ideas better. B. Every student should write thank-you letters. C. Writing by hand makes the brain work harder. D. Handwriting is faster than typing. 33. What is one reason some people give against teaching handwriting? A. Computers are too expensive for most families. B. Time spent on handwriting could be used for other learning. C. Handwriting is too difficult for young children. D. Most teachers do not know how to teach it. 34. What does “either-or” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Doing two things at the same time. B. Neither of the two choices. C. One choice that is better than the other. D. Choosing one and giving up the other. 35. What is the writer's main idea? A. Handwriting and typing are both useful for different jobs. B. Typing will soon take the place of handwriting. C. Handwriting should be taught instead of typing. D. Schools should stop teaching children to write. 四、补全短文(本题共5小题,每小题1分,计5分) 短文中有五处空白,请从方框里A—G七个句子中选出五句分别填入,使短文意思连贯。 Making a study plan is easy. Following it is hard. Many students write “Study English for two hours every day” on Monday and give up on Wednesday. __36__ A goal like “Learn ten new words every day” is easier to reach, and reaching it will make you feel good. 2. __37__ A plan without time is only a wish. You may think you can study with your phone beside you. __38__ Every time a message comes, your brain leaves the book for a few seconds, and it takes time to come back. 4. __39__ At the end of each week, ask yourself: What did I finish? What got in my way? Then change the plan for next week. A plan is a map, not a prison. 5. __40__ When you finish a week's plan, give yourself a small reward — a walk, a song, a call to a friend. Your brain will connect studying with something pleasant, and next week will be easier. A. Write down when you will study. B. Reward yourself when you finish. C. In fact, most people cannot. D. He learned the art from his father when he was a boy. “In the past, I __45__ (use) to watch my father perform for hours,” he says. “I never got tired of it.” Today, fewer young people want to learn shadow puppetry. On the desk in front of her lie several old books, some more than 300 years old. Their pages are yellow, and a few have been eaten by insects. Li's job is to bring them back to life. Li studied chemistry at university. She had never thought of working with old books until she visited an exhibition of ancient books in her second year. “I was amazed that a book could live for hundreds of years,” she says. “Someone must have taken care of it.” Becoming a book restorer is not easy. Li trained for three years. She learned how to make paste (糨糊) from wheat flour, how to choose paper that matches the old one, and how to clean a page without hurting a single word. A small hole may take her two hours to repair. One book can take months. The work is slow, and no one claps at the end of the day. But Li doesn't mind. “When I finish a book, I feel I have shaken hands with the person who made it,” she says. “And I know that in another hundred years, someone will open this book and read it. That is enough for me.” 51. Li Wen's job is to bring the old books ________ ________. 52. Li Wen trained for ________ ________ before she became a book restorer. 53.
