How to plan your routes to avoid busy places
Whether you are a beginner or already a regular runner these apps will come in handy for planning routes that avoid busy places on your next run.
Strava
Just put in whether you’re running or cycling, how far you’d like to go and whether you’re keen to avoid hills, the app will then suggest a number of routes near you, based on where other runners have been. It is a good way to see running routes you might not have explored.
Komoot
As you plan the route, it’ll work out the distance of your run and give you the option to input your running speed, allowing the app to work out how long the route shall take you.
Map my run
Map my run gives runners the option to plan their own route, or the ability to search through popular running routes near you, which is even more helpful for beginners. The app gives you the option of saving your favourite routes and accessing them on the app if you get lost mid-run.
OS Maps
Another hugely popular map-building platform, OS Maps is pretty high tech when it comes to planning a running route. You’ll need a subscription to get some of the features, but using the free app you can find local running routes. There are almost two million routes stored in the routes database, and many of them are free.
1. What is special about Strava?
A. It can be used to play music. B. It is pretty high technology.
C. It can plan cycling routes. D. It works out the distance of your run.

The social media trap of comparing yourself to others can lead to feelings of confusion and jealousy. That was certainly true for Lizzie Velasquez. “I will look at everyone’s photos and feel horrible about myself,” Velasquez says. “So I have made a rule for myself. If I’m on social media, when I start feeling like I’m falling down the rabbit hole of comparison, I have to stop.”
Feeling pressure from the Internet is nothing new for Velasquez. When she was just 17, a video calling her “The World’s Ugliest Woman” became popular on YouTube. It was a difficult period for her. “I suffered from a rare disease which doesn’t allow me to gain weight and also affects my eyes, my bones and my heart,” explains Velasquez.
Growing up, Velasquez said she lived in two different worlds. At home, her family treated her just like everyone else. Her parents raised her to appreciate herself. But that got harder when she started school. “I didn’t become aware of it until I started kindergarten, because I was entering this other world where I had to face the reality,” says Velasquez.
As Velasquez got into high school, she started to gain more understanding about her condition. But then came the YouTube video, which threatened her already-shaky foundation. Though it was difficult, that moment of bullying(霸凌)inspired Velasquez to use her newfound platform for good. She wanted to stop this behavior. Then she gave a talk about her story, reaching millions with her uplifting messages about beauty. And she gave interviews on national talk shows and was featured in the documentary film A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story. “I want to remind people that no matter how different you are and no matter what people say about you, you are meant to be in this world and being different is unique,” says Velasquez.
4. Where did Velasquez’s teenage pressure mainly come from?
A Her tense relationships with her parents. B. Others’ criticism of her appearance.
C. Others’ concern about her disease. D. Her popularity on social media.
5. How can we describe Lizzie Velasquez?
A. Brave and inspiring. B. Talented and confident.
C. Sociable and popular. D. Caring and warm-hearted.
6. What did Velasquez do to fight online bullying?
A. Avoid using social media for a while.
B. Call on people to talk directly with the bullies.
C. Encourage the young to improve their taste in beauty.
D. Speak out against the behavior by sharing her experiences.
7. What does the author mainly tell us in the text?
A. The negative effects of online bullying.
B. A girl’s message about beauty and happiness.
C. The public’s attitude to online bullying among teenagers.
D. A story of turning pain into power against online bullying.
B 5. A 6. D 7. D
根据第二段“Feeling pressure from the Internet is nothing new for Velasquez. When she was just 17, a video calling her “The World’s Ugliest Woman” became popular on YouTube. It was a difficult period for her. (感受到来自互联网的压力对Velasquez来说并不是什么新鲜事。当她只有17岁时,一段称她为‘世界上最丑陋的女人’的视频在YouTube上流行起来。对她来说,这是一个艰难的时期。)”和第四段第一、二句“As Velasquez got into high school, she started to gain more understanding about her condition. But then came the YouTube video, which threatened her already-shaky foundation. (随着Velasquez进入高中,她开始对自己的状况有了更多的了解。但随后出现了YouTube视频,这威胁到她已经摇摇欲坠的根基。)”可知,别人对Velasquez外貌的批评是她青少年时期主要的压力来源。故选B。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段第三句一直到段末“Though it was difficult, that moment of bullying(霸凌)inspired Velasquez to use her newfound platform for good. She wanted to stop this behavior. Then she gave a talk about her story, reaching millions with her uplifting messages about beauty. And she gave interviews on national talk shows and was featured in the documentary film A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story. “I want to remind people that no matter how different you are and no matter what people say about you, you are meant to be in this world and being different is unique,” says Velasquez.(虽然这很困难,但霸凌的那一刻激发了Velasquez利用她新发现的平台做好的事情。 故选A。

根据第二段“Feeling pressure from the Internet is nothing new for Velasquez. When she was just 17, a video calling her “The World’s Ugliest Woman” became popular on YouTube. It was a difficult period for her. (感受到来自互联网的压力对Velasquez来说并不是什么新鲜事。当她只有17岁时,一段称她为‘世界上最丑陋的女人’的视频在YouTube上流行起来。对她来说,这是一个艰难的时期。)”和第四段第三句“Although it was difficult, that moment of bullying(霸凌)inspired Velasquez to use her newfound platform for good. (虽然这很困难,但霸凌的那一刻激发了Velasquez要把新发现的平台用于好的方面。)”可知Velasquez经历了网络霸凌,但是她勇敢地面对。再结合文章第四段提到的她为了呼吁反对网络霸凌所做的努力可知,全文介绍了Velasquez由于经历网络霸凌继而倡导反对网络霸凌的故事。故选D。
C
Why don’t we have eyes in the back of our heads? There are at least two reasons. Eyes are biologically expensive things to make and rear view (后视) eyes don't fit well into the human evolution (进化).
Even animals, such as rabbits, whose main survival advantage is rear vision, have only the side eyes. Rear vision is not so important. There are other species that have evolved this ability by moving the position of their eyes relative to the rest of their head. Many birds have their eyes positioned towards the side of their head, allowing them a very wide angle of vision and, in the case of some birds such as the woodcock, they are positioned so they can actually achieve 360- degree vision. It is also obvious that spiders, which tend to have many eyes, only have them facing forwards.
Humans and probably some other animals, do have another adapted sense to make it up. Many experiments showed that sounds behind the head were noticed by a listener more than sounds to the front, especially if a listener was in a dark room. So, our ears can make up for the lack of rear-facing vision. You can look at it another way. Rear vision is useful only if the potential threat is visible. During human evolution, that was most often not the case.
Finally, there is often more than one potential “solution” to a given problem. In many species, the answer to maintaining 360 degree awareness of surrounding danger is to rely on many eyes. Social behavior is common in the animal kingdom and one reason for this is that there is safety in numbers. You might be looking the wrong way when a tiger approaches, but if your teammates raise the alarm this is as effective as having eyes in the back of your head.
8. Why do humans have no rear view eyes?
A. They are bad for human survival.
B. They are replaced by other organs.
C. They are less likely to spot the danger.
D. They are abandoned by natural selection.
9. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To explain why animals have other functions.
B. To state rear-view eyes aren’t a must for survival.
C. To prove rabbits, birds and spiders are very special.
D. To show rear view eyes are against the natural selection.
10. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The visible threat behind the head. B. Sensitive hearing.
C. The sounds behind the head. D. Rear vision.
11. Where does the text most likely come from?
A. A travel brochure. B. A fiction.
C. A science magazine. D. A book review.
D 9. B 10. A 11. C
根据文章第一段内容“Why don’t we have eyes in the back of our heads? There are at least two reasons. Eyes are biologically expensive things to make and rear-view (后视) eyes don’t fit well into the human evolution (进化).”(为什么我们的眼睛没有长在脑后?
通读第二段内容,根据关键句“Even animals, such as rabbits, whose main survival advantage is rear vision, have only the side eyes. Rear vision is not so important.”(即使是兔子等主要生存优势是后视的动物,也只有侧眼。
根据画线单词上句“Rear vision is useful only if the potential threat is visible.”(只有在潜在威胁是可以看见的时候,后视才有用。) ,“The visible threat behind the head”意为“脑后的可见的威胁”,符合句意。故选A项。
Why don’t we have eyes in the back of our heads? There are at least two reasons. D
Our fascination with Mars has never stopped. However, in the early days of space exploration, visits were restricted to “fly-bys”, such as those by Mariner Space Probes, by means of which craft would simply pass the planet, taking pictures and collecting data as they went. The Viking “orbiters” were next, and later craft in the Viking series, known as “Landers”, began to study the surface, equipped with instruments which continued to collect data about the environment until they stopped working.
The more recent “Rovers” move around the planet’s surface as they gather information. Current proposals include missions to study geographic features, climate, and soil components, in order to determine, among other things, whether the planet can ever have supported carbon-based life forms. Scientists now believe that at some stage the planet cooled dramatically, resulting in the near-loss of its atmosphere and, thanks to the wearing away of some surface features mineral deposits and other factors, it is also believed that liquid water once flowed here.
One of the most famous craft is “Phoenix”, which landed in November 2008. Its mission was to obtain samples from beneath the surface by digging into the arctic ice while its camera provided geological data and other equipment scanned the atmosphere, measuring temperature and pressure in an attempt to discover whether the chemicals necessary for life might exist beneath the surface. The craft was expected to send back data for three months, but managed to hold out for further two. An especially important part of the project was the need to keep absolute cleanliness of the equipment in order to ensure that any organic material collected was not contaminated by microbes(微生物).
In the future manned landings may probably come true-and though it may seem an extremely difficult undertaking, plans have already been discussed for the “terraforming(行星地球化)”of the planet, giving it an atmosphere, oceans and other elements similar to earth, with, the possibility of human settlement.
12. According to the text, what is “fly-by”?
A. A type of UFO. B. A photograph of a planet.
C. A planet of the solar system. D. A way of collecting information.
13. Which of the following is evidence of liquid water on Mars?
A. There is ice on it.
B. It once had some mineral deposits.
C. It once had carbon-based life forms.
D. There are some damaged areas on its surface.
14. What does the underlined word “contaminated” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Polluted. B. Protected. C. Controlled. D. Reduced.
15. How does the author feel about human beings going Mars?
A. It will happen very soon.
B. It may be hard, but it’s possible.
C. It will be full of uncertainties, but it’s worth the efforts.
D. It relies on different countries working together.
D 13. D 14. A 15. B

根据“fly-by”后面的“by means of which craft would simply pass the planet, taking pictures and collecting data as they went”,尤其是其中的means(方法,方式)可以推知,“fly-by”是一种方式,通过这种方式,飞船会经过这颗行星,边走边拍照、收集数据。
根据第二段中的“thanks to the wearing away of some surface features mineral deposits and other factors, it is also believed that liquid water once flowed here”(由于一些火山地表特征的磨损,矿物质沉淀和其他因素,所以人们认为液态水曾经在这里流动。)
根据倒数第二段中的“An especially important part of the project was the need to keep absolute cleanliness of the equipment.” 故选A。
根据最后一段中的“In the future manned landings may probably come true-and though it may seem an extremely difficult undertaking”可知,尽管人类登陆火星看起来是一项极其困难的任务,但这可能会成为现实。

Every morning before going to school, Galen would stand in front of their bookshelf in the living room, focusing his sights on one book titled “The Greatest Explorer That Never Was”. It was kept on the top shelf. His mom would always read it to him when he was feeling sad. And lately, he’d always been feeling sad. His mom died.
He would try to think of a way to get the book. He’d thought about asking his dad for help but his dad had been spending more time in his office. Galen was on his own for this one and he saw it as a challenge he needed to overcome. This was his test.
At school, he would draw up plans on how he would do it. First, he planned on using the ladder they kept in the shed (小屋). So when he got home, he threw his bag on the couch and carried out the plan. But when he had his hands on and tried to carry it, immediately he realized that the plan was a failure-the ladder was too heavy for him to carry to the living room. He left the shed, defeated. He took out the notebook that he’d written his plans on. He crossed out using a ladder. He went to bed that night determined to come up with a new plan that would work.
His next plan was to use his mom’s old trampoline (蹦床). Using it would allow him to jump high enough, reach the top of the shelf, grab the book, and land on the ground. He did this about four or five times before deciding that this plan, like the one before, wouldn’t work.
Galen started coming with other plans as the days went on. After the unsuccessful mop and broom plan, he stayed up late that night hatching a new plan, which had a higher success rate than the others. It was to climb to the top of the shelf until he could just take the book. He’d just have to hold on to the sides a little tighter so that he wouldn’t fall off.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
But it wasn’t the easy climb he expected.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Down to the ground with the book, he turned around to see who the ally (同盟)was.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But it wasn’t the easy climb he expected. In fact, it was even harder than he thought. It was hard holding on to the edges with his hands and the tip of his toes. Both his hands and toes began to hurt. Before he could let go, someone grabbed him and raised him up. He felt his body moving upwards. He opened his eyes and was now face to face with the book he so desperately wanted. He grabbed the book and held on to it tight. He was then slowly brought back down to the ground.
Down to the ground with the book, he turned around to see who the ally (同盟)was. He was surprised to see that it was his dad. His dad smiled at him but his eyes looked sad. He walked closer to his dad and handed the book over to him. He took the book, gave Galen a smile, and began reading it out loud. As his dad was reading the story, Galen had this feeling that his mom was there, listening to the story with them.

How to plan your routes to avoid busy places
Whether you are a beginner or already a regular runner, these apps will come in handy for planning routes that avoid busy places on your next run.

A. Her tense relationships with her parents.
Humans, and probably some other animals, do have another adapted sense to make it up.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
But it wasn’t the easy climb he expected.
