Karen was 84 years old and depended on a wheelchair to get around because she was missing a leg. Her son, Johnny Lauder, tried repeatedly to get her to leave, but she refused. Johnny and his whole family live within a few blocks of one another. They kept in touch with Karen as the storm continued violently (猛烈地) outside, watching the water rising dangerously all around them. When Karen reported that the water in her house had reached her bottom, Johnny knew he had to take action. First, Johnny ensured his sons and their pets were taken care of. Then, he jumped out of a window and began to swim. Johnny used to work as a rescue swimmer. He is obviously a strong swimmer, but the flood water was filled with dangerous materials. There was also a strong current (水流), and he had to swim against it for most of his trip to Karen’s. As he made his way through the water, Johnny stopped periodically to snap selfies (自拍) to show his worried family that he was okay. Johnny was racing against the clock. He knew he only had a short period of time to get there before the water rose above Karen’s head. It took him 40 minutes to swim four blocks. The sound of Karen shouting inside was music to his ears! “If it would’ve been 20 minutes later, she wouldn’t be here,” Johnny said. “She’s never been happier to see me.” Karen is now safe, although she is in the hospital being treated for infections (感染) she got in the water. The family have all lost everything they owned, including their houses, but they’ re grateful just to be here. 4. Why did Karen refuse to leave her house when the hurricane came? A. She was too old to move. B. She missed one of her legs. C. She thought the storm was not violent. D. She lost her wheelchair and was unable to leave. 5. What challenge did Johnny face while swimming to his mother? A. Strong current. B. Sharks in the water. C. Cold temperature. D. Lack of swimming skills. 6. Why did Johnny take selfies along the way to Karen’s home? A To record his swimming trip. B. To report his safety to his family. C. To warn other rescuers of danger. D. To show off his swimming skills. 7. What was the family’s attitude after losing everything? A. They were angry. B. They were depressed. C. They were bitter about the loss. D. They were thankful to be alive. C 5. A 6. B 7. 根据第一段“When a hurricane hit her hometown, Karen Lauder chose to stay at home because she didn’t know how strong the storm would be.(当飓风袭击她的家乡时,凯伦·劳德选择留在家里,因为她不知道这场风暴会有多猛烈。)” 根据第三段“There was also a strong current (水流), and he had to swim against it for most of his trip to Karen’s.(当时水流也很湍急,在去凯伦家的大部分行程中,他都不得不逆水游泳。)” 故选 A。 根据第三段“As he made his way through the water, Johnny stopped periodically to snap selfies (自拍) to show his worried family that he was okay.(约翰尼在水里游的时候,时不时停下来自拍,让担心的家人知道他没事。)” 根据最后一段“The family have all lost everything they owned, including their houses, but they’ re grateful just to be here.(这个家庭失去了他们拥有的一切,包括房子,但他们庆幸自己还活着。)” D。 C Scientists discovered that fewer humpback whales made the singing noises, as their population grew. “It was getting more difficult to actually find singers,” marine biologist Rebecca Dunlop in Brisbane said. She added, “When there were fewer of them, there was a lot of singing-now that there are lots of them, no need to be singing so much.” Eastern Australia’s humpback whales came close to disappearing in the 1960s. With the end of commercial whaling (捕鲸), the population began to regrow, climbing to about 27,000 whales by 2015. That number is near estimated pre-whaling levels. As the density (密度) of whales increased, their singing behaviors changed. While 2 in 10 males made crying noises in 2004, 10 years later the number had dropped to 1 in 10, Dunlop said. The team’s study appeared in a recent issue of Nature Communications Biology. Dunlop said she thinks singing played a big part in bringing in mates when populations severely declined. When humpbacks live in denser populations, males looking for mates also have to deal with competing whales. Boris Worm, an ocean biologist, was not involved in the research. “As animal populations recover, they change their behavior-they have different cries,” Worm said. The research suggests the seas are still noisy with humpback whale sounds. Many humpbacks seek to bring in mates with a combination of singing and physical movements, the study notes. The large increase in the humpback population during the study period provided valuable data about changes in the animals’ behavior and they must have been singers long before whaling reduced their numbers, said Simon Ingram. But the new study demonstrates (证明) how necessary their complex and beautiful songs were to their survival and recovery, he added. 8. Which may make humpback whales sing in the discovery? A. The power of waves. B. The use of microphone. C. The feeling of loneliness. D. The increase of their numbers. 9. What does Paragraph 2 mainly say about humpback whales? A. Their sudden disappearance. B. Their sharp rise in numbers. C. Their being well protected. D. Their change in behaviors. 10. What does the underlined word “declined” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Increased. B. Dropped. C. Climbed. D. Recovered. 11. Which does Simon Ingram agree? A. Humpbacks’ behaviors have never changed. B. Humpbacks’ numbers increased by whaling. C. Humpbacks’ singing noises are important. D. Humpbacks’ singing will disappear soon. C 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第一段“When there were fewer of them, there was a lot of singing-now that there are lots of them, no need to be singing so much.(当它们数量少的时候,它们会唱很多歌——现在它们很多了,没有必要唱那么多。)” 根据第二段“As the density (密度) of whales increased, their singing behaviors changed. While 2 in 10 males made crying noises in 2004, 10 years later the number had dropped to 1 in 10, Dunlop said.(随着鲸鱼密度的增加,它们的歌唱行为也发生了变化。Dunlop说,2004年,每10个男性中就有2个会哭喊,而10年后,这一比例降至1/10。)”可知,第二段主要讲的是座头鲸行为上的改变。故选D。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段“singing played a big part in bringing in mates when populations severely(当种群数量严重……时,歌唱在吸引配偶方面发挥了重要作用)”和最后一段“Many humpbacks seek to bring in mates with a combination of singing and physical movements(许多座头鲸试图通过唱歌和身体动作的结合来吸引配偶)”可知,划线词所在句子表示“当种群数量严重下降时,唱歌在吸引配偶方面发挥了重要作用”,划线词declined的意思是“下降”,和dropped意思相近,故选B。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“The large increase in the humpback population during the study period provided valuable data about changes in the animals’ behavior and they must have been singers long before whaling reduced their numbers, said Simon Ingram.(西蒙·英格拉姆说,在研究期间座头鲸数量的大量增加提供了有关动物行为变化的宝贵数据,在捕鲸减少它们的数量之前,它们肯定早就是歌手了。)” C。 D Adults are often ashamed to ask for help. Seeking someone’s help can make you feel like you are broadcasting your inability. New research suggests young children don’t seek help in school for the same reason. Kayla Good, a graduate student at Stanford University, and Alex Shaw, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Chicago, applied a classic technique to learn more about how children think about reputation: Across several studies, they asked 576 children aged four to nine, to predict the behavior of two characters, Tom and Jack, in a story. Tom genuinely wanted to be smart, and Jack only wanted to seem smart to others. In one study, they told children both characters did poorly on a test, and asked which of them would be more likely to raise their hands in front of their class to ask the teacher for help. The four-year-olds were equally likely to choose either of the two characters as the one who would seek help. But by age seven or eight, children thought Jack would be less likely to ask for help. And children’s expectations were truly “reputational” in nature — they were specially thinking about how the characters would act in front of peers. They could still imagine situations where Jack would seek help: when it could be sought privately (on a computer rather than in person), children thought both characters were equally likely to ask for it. Given the findings, it seems quite possible that when children themselves are the ones struggling, they, too, might avoid seeking out help if they are concerned about reputation. If so, the unwillingness to seek help when others are present could clearly hold back learning progress. To improve in any field, one must work hard, take on challenging tasks, and ask questions. However, the situation can be difficult when someone is concerned about their impressions on others. 12. What were the children asked to predict about the two characters? A. Their bad behaviors. B. Their learning progress. C. Their likeliness to get help. D. Their potential for seeking help. 13. Who was likely to seek private aid according to the eight-year-olds? A. Tom. B. Jack. C. Both. D. Neither. 14. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A. Children never seek help when in trouble. B. Reputation concern doesn’t affect kids’ learning. C. Those caring about others’ views may progress harder. D. Challenging tasks aren’t needed for improvement. 15. What is the author’s suggestion for kids? A. Be ready to help others. B. Be brave to ask for help. C. Care more about reputation. D. Make efforts to be smarter. D 13. C 14. C 15. 根据第二段“In one study, they told children both characters did poorly on a test, and asked which of them would be more likely to raise their hands in front of their class to ask the teacher for help. (在一项研究中,他们告诉孩子们两个角色的考试成绩都很差,并询问他们中哪一个更有可能在全班同学面前举手向老师寻求帮助。)”可知,研究中孩子们被询问哪个角色更有可能寻求帮助,即预测角色寻求帮助的可能性。故选D。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“They could still imagine situations where Jack would seek help: when assistance could be sought privately (on a computer rather than in person), children thought both characters were equally likely to ask for it. (他们仍然可以想象杰克会寻求帮助的情况:当可以私下寻求帮助时(在电脑上而不是当面),孩子们认为两个角色都有可能寻求帮助。)”可知,据八岁的孩子说,杰克和汤姆都可能私下寻求帮助。故选C。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“If so, the unwillingness to seek help when others are present could clearly hold back learning progress. To improve in any field, one must work hard, take on challenging tasks, and ask questions. However, the situation can be difficult when someone is concerned about their impressions on others.(如果是这样的话,当别人在场时,不愿意寻求帮助显然会阻碍学习进程。要在任何领域取得进步,一个人必须努力工作,承担具有挑战性的任务,并提出问题。然而,当某人担心自己给别人的印象时,情况就会变得困难。)”可知,那些关心别人看法的人可能进步得更难。故选C。 【15题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“If so, this unwillingness to seek help when others are present could obviously impede academic progress. To improve in any field, one must work hard, take on challenging tasks and ask questions. (如果是这样的话,在别人在场时不愿寻求帮助显然会阻碍学业进步。要想在任何领域取得进步,一个人必须努力工作,接受具有挑战性的任务,并提出问题。)”可推知,作者建议孩子们要勇敢地寻求帮助。故选B。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 When traveling in foreign nations, you have to know their way of life._____16_____Otherwise, you may get yourself on the wrong side. They were talking about the coming Father’s Day. “Belle, do you know when Father’s Day is celebrated?” Fred asked his sister Belle. “Yes, it is going to be celebrated on June 16 this year. Yesterday my friend and I were talking about it,” Belle replied. “Do you have any idea about how we should celebrate this day and make it memorable for Dad?” Fred asked. “Hmm... I was thinking about it too and have some ideas,” Belle answered excitedly. “What are you kids talking about?” their Mom asked, entering their room. “Mom, we are wondering about how to celebrate Father’s Day,” Belle said. “Oh, I am surprised you kids can remember the day! Well, I am thinking of cooking some favorite dishes for your father. You both should think of ways to decorate the house beautifully,” Mom said. “That would be great!” said Belle and Fred together. Both of them got up smiling, thinking of hundreds of ways to celebrate Father’s Day. Mom went to the kitchen, and Belle and Fred started doing their homework. But soon Fred noticed Belle deep in thought so he asked what the matter was. “Fred, I am thinking that our parents do everything for us but they demand nothing from us. Isn’t it bad that we never think about them and are always concerned about our needs?” Belle replied. “Sometimes we are so busy with our lives that we don’t pay proper attention to our parents. We should listen to whatever they say properly and answer them. We must also study hard to get good grades,” Fred said. The next day, all three of them, Belle, Fred and their Mom, got busy preparing their surprise celebration for Father’s Day. Belle drew a family picture with her crayons (蜡笔). French toast and chicken porridge, both of which were father’s favorite foods, were ready. Eventually, everything was settled. Fred and Belle stood beside the door, waiting for their father eagerly. Soon Dad came in. Fred and Belle were very excited to see their father. They cried out together, “Happy Father’s Day!” and then sang the poem loudly. Hearing the words and the poem, so glad was Dad that his face lit up. “We have a surprise for you!” added Fred, pointing at the decorations. “I love them very much!” Dad said excitelly and gave Fred, Belle and Mom a big hug. When he saw the dinner, his eyes widened and twinkled with excitement. He couldn’t help tasting a bit of the chicken soup, explaining that it was the best dish he had ever had. Mom smiled heartily and exchanged a gentle glance with Fred and Belle. What a beautiful and sweet surprise! B When a hurricane hit her hometown, Karen Lauder chose to stay at home because she didn’t know how strong the storm would be. A. To record his swimming trip. B. To report his safety to his family. C. To warn other rescuers of danger. D. To show off his swimming skills. 7. What was the family’s attitude after losing everything? A. They were angry. B. They were depressed. C They were bitter about the loss. D. They were thankful to be alive. C Scientists discovered that fewer humpback whales made the singing noises, as their population grew. D Adults are often ashamed to ask for help. A. Tom. B. Jack. C. Both. D. Neither. 14 Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A. Children never seek help when in trouble. B. Reputation concern doesn’t affect kids’ learning. C. Yesterday my friend and I were talking about it,” Belle replied. “Do you have any idea about how we should celebrate this day and make it memorable for Dad?” Fred asked. “Hmm...
