Using augmented reality (AR) glasses and a smartphone, deaf and hearing-impaired (听力受损的) people are also able to join in everyday conversations. The AR glasses were developed by Dan Scarfe after he had Christmas dinner with his family. The man saw his 97-year-old hearing-impaired grandfather sitting alone in silence while the rest of the family were talking excitedly. The images of his grandfather always watching TV shows with subtitles (字幕) crossed Scarfe’s mind. He suddenly realized that maybe the AR glasses could help. Scarfe got to work, partnering with Nreal, an AR glasses maker. Six months later, a new pair of AR glasses came out. The glasses have a microphone that receives the audio (音频) from the environment and sends it to a connected smartphone. The phone then creates subtitles from that audio. By special software, these subtitles then appear on the user’s glasses screen. The company first tested the glasses in the UK. The UK was chosen as a testing ground as ever 12 million adults in Britain have hearing loss. However, when the product goes global, it could change the lives of some 430 million people. This represents 5% of the world’s population and includes 70 million people with total hearing loss. This is a game changer for the deaf. Around the world, people take action in different ways. Here’s a story of a young German who turned tree-planting into a lifelong fight for the planet. Planting a tree is easy; bringing back a forest is hard. Those are the words of Felix Finkbeiner, who at 26 in 2024, has now spent much of his life fighting climate change through tree planting and forest restoration (森林恢复). The idea came to Finkbeiner when he was 9 years old. Inspired by Wangari Maathai, an environmentalist, the boy announced to his fourth grade class that they should plant a million trees in every country. Gradually, his speech took root. Finkbeiner and his classmates planted their first tree at their school, and his idea began to spread to other schools. In addition, Finkbeiner set up Plant-for-the-Planet to encourage the public to join in planting trees. Some scientists, however, note that planting trees is not going to solve the climate crisis (气候危机) alone. It takes several tens of years for trees to be able to grow enough in order to take in larger amounts of carbon (碳), supposing they survive dangerous situations like wildfires. Now, they have restoration sites in Spain, Ghana and Ethiopia, but their biggest one is in Mexico. Since the project began in 2015, Plant-for-the-Planet has planted nearly 8 million trees there. “The more people that get involved,” Finkbeiner says, the faster the goal can be met and the greener the earth can get. 36. Soon she would have her summer holiday, and her days would be spent on horseback. She thought she would brush her horse first after class. Suddenly, someone was calling her, “Madison. Madison!” Madison jumped. She turned back toward the class to find her classmates laughing. “Could you pay attention to me?” Mrs. Smith said. “Everybody, here comes our guest.” Dr. Landon. a vet (兽医), came in. He came here today to give a talk as part of the school’s Career Exploration Program (职业探索项目). Madison tried to focus as Dr. Landon talked about how he struggled (挣扎) with math when he was a kid. She looked out the window. It was so nice outside. Suddenly, some of Dr. Landon’s words caught her attention. “Most of the time I travel in my truck to take care of horses across the town. It’s a lot of work, but I love it…” Madison’s mouth dropped wide open. He spent his days with horses! Lots of horses! “That must have been fun.” she thought. At that moment, Madison could see her future. She was going to be a vet and take care of horses. After school, Madison changed her plan. C A new and exciting invention now allows deaf people to see conversations in real time. Mark Atkinson, who is using the AR glasses, says, “As a deaf person myself, I am blown away by this new technology. When I tried on the glasses for the first time, I was so surprised. Real-time subtitles made me become part of the conversation as never before.” 7. Who made Dan Scarfe want to develop the AR glasses? A. His father. B. His partner. C. His grandfather. 8. Why was the UK chosen as a testing ground for the AR glasses? A. It has lots of adults with hearing less B. The government provided the money. C. Dan Scarfe is from the UK. 9. What does the underlined part “am blown away by” probably mean? A. 讨厌 B. 赞赏 C. 开发 10. Where can we read the passage? A. In a storybook. B. In a research report. C. 36. When did Finkbeiner get the idea of planting trees? ______________________________________ 37. Where did Finkbeiner and his classmates plant their first tree? ______________________________________ 38. Can planting trees alone solve the climate crisis? ______________________________________ 39. How many trees has Plant-for-the-Planet planted in Mexico? ______________________________________ 40.
