As I was about to go back to my room, my mom shouted, “Emma, you’ve got letters.” I hurried downstairs and saw a small envelope (信封) waiting for me on the table. It was from my pen pal, Sarah, who lives in San Francisco. We met online through a group for book lovers, and after hearing others talk about how fun it was to have a pen pal, we decided to try writing letters to each other.
In her first letter to me, she wrote, “The idea of having a pen pal seems so wonderful to me. While I like the conveniences (便捷) of the modern world, some old traditions like writing letters have a beauty that never goes away.”
I agree with her. My love for writing letters by hand wasn’t new. I’ve always enjoyed writing personal letters to friends. When I finished high school, I even wrote to each of my friends, wishing them well as we went to different places. But my communication with Sarah felt different. We were strangers getting to know each other through letters.
Sarah told me that she loves making cakes and that her favorite thing to make is chocolate chip cookies. She also said she enjoys watching sunsets by the beach and that she thinks they’re the most peaceful moments of her day. From her letters, I learned a lot about San Francisco, too. In return, I shared stories about my life in Boston. I also told her about my favorite season, fall, and how the trees turn red and orange colors.
Writing to Sarah has become my favorite hobby. While texting or sending emails is quick, there’s something special about opening a handwritten letter. The careful choice of words and the care behind each small part make it different. I look forward to every envelope that arrives, knowing it carries a bit of Sarah’s world into mine.
29. What made Emma and Sarah decide to try writing letters?
A. They saw a small envelop waiting for them.
B. They heard others say it was fun to have a pen pal.
C. They communicated with classmates.
D. They talked about their favorite things.
30. By having Sarah as her pen pal, Emma ________.
A. watched sunsets by the beach B. shared her favorite food
C. visited beautiful places in Boston D. learned a lot about San Francisco
31. Which of the following is a suitable title of the text?
A. Different Pen Pals. B. Letters—the Special Connection.
C. From Emails to Texting. D. Sarah’s World.
C
New research has found that just like natural engineers, wild horses are good at digging wells (挖井) in deserts (沙漠) which provide valuable drinking water. This helps other animals too, as black bears and American badgers (獾) have been found drinking at the wells.
A team of researchers from Australia, Denmark and the US set up far-away cameras at four places in deserts in the US. Wild horses had used their feet to dig wells two meters deep at these places, so they could reach water under dry riverbeds and small rivers. The cameras were used to watch the places and were set to record whenever an animal walked by.
The scientists saw many horses moving around, but they were most interested in which other animals came to drink at the wells. Over three summers, beginning in 2015, the team saw 57 kinds of other large animals visiting the wells, including wild cats and deer. The team also found that the wells gave water to desert plants.
Researcher Erick Lundgren, from Aarhus University in Denmark, described the wild horses as “natural engineers”—animals that change the environment around them. Perhaps the best known natural engineers are beavers (河狸). Beavers cut down trees with their teeth, creating space in woods where sunlight can reach smaller plants and allow them to grow. Then beavers use the wood to build walls across rivers, which help clean pollution in water and protect their homes.
More than 12,000 years ago, several kinds of horse-related animals lived in North America but they all died out (灭绝). Today’s wild horses develop from animals that were brought to America by humans in the past few hundred years. By digging wells that help other animals, they may be doing the same kind of work to shape the environment as their long-gone relatives (亲缘物种) once did.
32. Why did the wild horses dig the wells?
A. To protect themselves. B. To kill other animals.
C. To get drinking water. D. To create living space.
33. What can we learn about the wells?
A. They were dug with horses’ teeth. B. They were found on the mountains.
C. They reached as deep as four meters. D. They provided water for desert plants.
34. What does the underlined “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Smaller plants. B. Woods. C. Beavers. D. Trees.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Wild horses are changing other animals. B. Wild horses are natural engineers.
C. Wild horses were brought to America. D. Wild horses were found visiting wells.
D
Most people have an inner (内心的) voice. What you say to yourself, and how you say it, influences how you think, feel and behave, so it’s worth paying attention to it.
Your inner voice is always with you. You might notice it when you make a mistake, when you try something new, or when you solve a problem. Sometimes it sounds kind but at other times it can sound rude or scared. Young people’s coach Maria Evans says it should be treated with care and kindness. “It gets scared when you think about doing something that feels hard. Often all it needs is to be listened to and spoken to with love and reassurance.”
Your inner voice has an influence on you because you already pay attention to it. So what you say to yourself, and what you hear, sinks in. If you keep telling yourself you can’t do math or you’re not good at making friends or you’re not creative, over time you’ll believe what your inner voice is saying. When you talk to yourself like “I’ve got to tidy my room”, it makes the task feel harder. If instead you say, “I choose to tidy my room, and then I’ll be able to find the books I want easily,” it’s more positive. You’re telling yourself how you’ll get an advantage.
Noticing what your inner voice says and choosing to talk encouragingly to yourself can help you feel more confident. For example, when you get things wrong, tell yourself it’s okay and you’ll learn for next time. Or when you do something challenging, congratulate yourself for being brave and having a try. If you’re not sure what to say, imagine you’re talking to your best friends and trying to support and help them inside your head.
36. Why should you pay attention to your inner voice?
A. It is always inside your head. B. It is different from your action.
C. It influences your thoughts and behavior. D. It helps you try something new and hard.
37. What does the underlined word “reassurance” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. pride B. comfort C. worries D. rudeness
38. What is an example of positive inner voice?
A. “I’ve got to tidy my room.” B. “It’s hard to have a try.”
C. “It’s okay to make mistakes.” D. “I have to find the books.”
