When Papa was around, Mama loved to dance. But now, Mama doesn’t dance anymore. She works hard on hair dressing every day at her salon. During breaks, Mama would rest in her chair. Luisa would then rush to brush her beautiful long hair, hoping to make Mama smile. Mama had seldom smiled since Papa died, but when she did, she was the most beautiful.
Luisa loved looking at the pictures on the wall of the salon. Her favourite one was a picture of Mama long ago. In the picture, Mama was smiling, happily dancing with Papa in a grand room, filled with people and lights.
Luisa had a secret. Tomorrow was Mama’s birthday, and for weeks, whenever Mama wasn’t looking, she had been sharing her secret with Mama’s favorite customers. She did this while sweeping up hair for Mr. Anselmo, helping with Hazel Mae Dixon’s hair...
At six o’clock, it was time to go home. Mama put away the tools. Then Mama put the money she made in a special envelope for Luisa’s college.
Outside, the world was cool and dark. Mama said, “The world is big. One day, I will give the world to you.” But Luisa thought, “Tonight, I will give the world to you.”
At home that evening, Luisa suddenly shouted. “My book I need it for tomorrow’s school report. I must have left it in the salon. I need to go back now” “No worries, dear. I will go with you.”
When they got to the salon, it was dark. As soon as Mama opened the door, the light was on, and music filled the room. Surprise The room was filled with flowers and tiny lights. All of Mama’s favorite customers were there, smiling, dressing up as the people in Luisa’s favourite picture.

It is reported that people use around 500 billion plastic bottles every year. Not only are these bottles seriously harmful to the environment, but they are also a risk to our health. As a result, some companies have been working hard to find something friendly to take the place of these plastic bottles.
One such company was Skipping Rocks Lab. It was set up by three students who came up with the idea of the Ooho water bubble. At first, few people thought this idea could be put into practice. But these three students didn’t give up and they worked on their project day and night and finally they made it. The product is actually a kind of edible water container (可食用的水容器). It is economical to produce, which means that it doesn’t need much money or energy, and it is environmentally friendly. Users can eat the whole water bubble together with its membrane (薄膜). If they don’t want to eat the membrane, they can just drink the water inside and then throw it away without any worries because it will fully biodegrade (生物降解) in just a few weeks.
However, Ooho bubbles haven’t become popular. At outdoor sporting events and festivals, they are useful for people who just want a quick drink without creating waste. But because they are so easy to break, they aren’t convenient for daily use. What’s more, if they were sold in supermarkets, they might need some kind of packaging because of food safety. What do you think about it? Would you like to try these environmental-friendly bubbles one day?
30. Which of the following may best describe Ooho bubbles?
A. Green and cheap. B. Delicious but unsanitary.
C. Expensive but useful D. Friendly and popular.
31. Which of the following activities is the most suitable for using Ooho water bubbles?

A. By sharing his own experience. B. By telling some humorous stories.
C. By using famous people’s sayings. D. By showing both advantages and challenges.

Every year during the Spring Festival Shanghai’s Yu Garden hosts a well-known lantern show. It has been recognized as one of China’s important intangible cultural heritages (非物质文化遗产) and is also among the oldest lantern fairs in the country, which attracts thousands of visitors every year. People can enjoy the colorful lights, send New Year wishes to their families and friends, and experience traditional Chinese culture.
In 2024, this lantern festival did something special — this popular lantern show made its first appearance outside China! For the first time, the event was held at Jardind’ Acclimatation, France’s oldest amusement park (游乐场). There, people could see 60 large and bright lighting patterns and over 2,000 beautiful lanterns. They made the park look like a wonderland. This show joined the cultures of the East and the West together to celebrate the 2024 Year of the Dragon in a special way.
The lanterns there mixed Eastern and Western art. Some showed powerful dragons from Chinese stories, while others showed creatures from Shanhai Jing, an ancient Chinese storybook. For example, visitors could see mythical animals like Kunpeng (a giant fish-bird) and Yinglong (a rain dragon), symbols of courage and hope. These lanterns brought people into a magical world and let them know more about the great Chinese culture.
Besides looking at the lanterns, visitors could also enjoy some amazing traditional Chinese performances like fan dances and kung fu shows. They could also taste delicious Chinese food such as dumplings and tangyuan. Many French visitors tried on hanfu clothing and bought paper cuttings as souvenirs (纪念品).
“This wasn’t just a lantern show — it was a cultural dialogue,” said the organizer Li Wei. The event helped people understand each other’s traditions better. Though the lights are gone now, the warm memories and valuable friendships continue to shine.
33. What makes Yu Garden Lantern Show special according to paragraph 1?
A. It attracts a thousand visitors from China. B. It is held in France every Spring Festival.
C. It is a national intangible cultural heritage. D. It allows visitors to make their own lanterns.
34. What does the underlined word “mythical” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. based on ancient stories B. common in daily life
C. are recently discovered D. popular in western art
35. What can we infer from Li Wei’s words in the last paragraph?
A. People were mainly interested in lantern sales.
B. The lantern designs were created by French artists.
C. The event helped build international understanding.
D. French visitors liked talking to Chinese at the show.
36. What is the main purpose of the passage?

Today’s Topic: Do you think AI is a better teacher than parents?
Zhang Xiaowen Posted 3 days ago
Song Zexi, 14 May 1 #1
I believe parents are better teachers than AI.
First, our parents are closer to us. When we feel worried, they can give us emotional (情感的) support. Also, our parents have more real-life experience than AI. With their help, we can deal with stress better and develop a more positive attitude (态度) toward life. Although AI provides perfect answers, I would still choose my parents as my teachers. They not only help with my studies but also offer love and support in difficult times. AI is a great tool, but it can never replace the close relationship between parents and children.

I think AI is a better teacher than parents.
Unlike parents, AI always stays calm and patient. This helps families avoid arguments, which not only improves the parent-child relationship but also makes learning more efficient (高效的). AI is also a smart tool that can quickly collect a lot of information and offer more correct and different ways to solve study problems. Plus, AI is always ready and never gets tired, making learning easier and more convenient.

Li Yufan, 15 May 25 #16
When I have trouble with math, AI gives me step-by-step help without losing patience. That makes me feel good. However, parents have something special. They love and care for us in ways that go beyond studying.
My mother sometimes gets angry, but after she shouts, she also makes me feel better with hugs and kind words. She understands my strengths and weaknesses from everyday life and always thinks about my feelings.
In the end, although AI is dependable and helpful for studying, it can never replace my parents, who play an important role in every part of my life.
