B Nilas Corneliussen is the Swedish-born head chef of a Nordic-Asian combination restaurant in Thailand’s capital. While Thailand had long appealed to him, even in his youth, Corneliussen said he never imagined a career in cooking. Instead, he was drawn to Muay Thai, or Thai boxing. During high school breaks, he even traveled alone to Thailand to join Muay Thai training camps. During those trips, he fell in love with the country. After suffering a hand injury while boxing, he was forced to move on from Muay Thai. However, he didn’t stop thinking about Thailand. The very day after graduating from high school in Sweden, Corneliussen booked a one-way ticket to Bangkok and applied for a study visa. It wasn’t until halfway through his studies, from 2010 to 2014, that he was invited to the birthday party of a fellow student and friend, whose parents ran local Thai restaurants. The atmosphere inside the kitchen attracted him — everyone had to come together to make it happen. At the time, Corneliussen didn’t think he could run after his new enthusiasm for cooking in Thailand. Instead, he thought it would be best to go back to his roots and understand the flavors he’d grown up with before cooking anything, so he finished his studies and moved back to Europe. It’s a view he doesn’t agree with today. He thinks now that no cooking style is more important than another. Starting out in a Stockholm restaurant, he improved his skills and finally won the silver in the world’s most famous international cooking competition as part of the Swedish team. Despite the success, he returned to Thailand with his love for cooking arts in 2022. “In Thailand, I get this feeling of belonging and connection to the people, food and culture,” he says, recalling his first days as a foreigner in Thailand. 4. Why did Corneliussen quit practising Muay Thai? A. He was no longer interested in it. B. His hands got injured while boxing. C. He found a new passion for cooking. D. He was forced to leave Thailand. 5. What awakened Corneliussen’s passion for cooking? A. Team work in the kitchen. B. Unique taste of Thai food. C. Recommendation of a Thai friend. D. The inconvenient life in Bangkok. 6. What can be learned about Corneliussen according to the text? A. He showed great interest in cooking when young. B. He was injured when cooking for the first time. C. He considers all cooking styles are of equal importance. D. He thinks his returning to Europe quite a wise decision. 7. What is the text mainly about? A. A Swedish-born head chef in Thailand. B. A Swedish child’s love for Thailand. C. Different cooking styles in the world. D. A Nordic-Asian combination restaurant. C From Smells to Soundtracks When a young sawfly, a bee-like insect, is threatened by its attackers like ants, it emits (排放) a mixture of unpleasant smells to defend itself. These emissions can seriously annoy a potential enemy. Scientists wanting to study these smelly mixtures — to understand which aspects of them discourage attackers and why — face great challenges. Meetups between sawflies and ants in a lab are difficult to carry out. There are also a very limited quantity of the insects’ emissions. So two researchers in Brussels took a different approach: They changed the chemicals into sound using a synthesizer (合成器) in order to study those instead. First, they figured out which molecules (分子) were present in each smelly compound and in what amounts. Then they assigned (分配) various characteristics of those molecules — like their weight — a matching pitch (音高), duration, and tone quality. For example, smaller molecules evaporate (挥发) quickly, so the researchers assigned them sounds with higher pitch. Larger molecules were given lower-pitched sounds. Then they combined the sounds of each molecule present in a sawfly’s smell to create the insect’s soundtrack. If a molecule was highly concentrated in the insect's emission, they assigned it a louder volume (音量). The researchers then examined people’s reactions to it and compared them to ants’ reactions to the original smells. They played the soundtracks through speakers to about 50 study participants. Then the scientists measured how far people backed up to get to a “comfortable position” away from the noise. Most of the study volunteers told the researchers that the high pitch, as well as the high volume, was what made them back off. “Ants and volunteers moved away from a chemical and its matching soundtrack respectively (分别),” the researchers wrote. Jean-Luc Boevé, co-author of the study, said the process would give other zoologists a new way to compare sawflies’ chemical defenses with those from other insects. It may also offer researchers clues about which molecules fight off enemies most. 8. What makes it difficult to study the defensive smells of sawflies? A. The amount of emissions is small. B. The number of sawflies is declining. C. Sawflies are under threat of extinction. D. Sawflies barely react to ants in the lab. 9. What can be concluded in terms of the sound approach? A. A sawfly makes a sound when defending themselves. B. The larger a molecule is, the higher-pitched the sound is. C Humans dislike the sound as much as ants hate the smells. D. Human reaction to the sounds are comparable to that of sawflies. 10. What is the significance of the study according to Boevé ? A. It provides a new way to study molecules. B. It contributes to the protection of sawflies. C. It can be applied more broadly with other insects. D. It provides insights into fights between sawflies. 11. This passage is mainly intended to ________. A. explain ways to transfer smells into soundtracks B. demonstrate a scientific study on insects’ smells C. introduce a research on sawfly’s effect on humans D. test out people’s reaction to various soundtracks D “When I think of England, I think of the queen taking her dogs for a walk in the countryside,” says Carsten Haferkamp, a dog-owning German architect working in London. There may be something in the stereotype. Data from Tractive, a firm that provides GPS tracking for pets, show that Britons walk their dogs more than their European neighbours do. The British love for dog-walking may have more to do with the walking than the dogs. Britons are big walkers—they came fifth in the world in a study in 2017 the highest in Europe. Dogs provide walkers with company and a purpose, so it may be that walking encourages dog-ownership, rather than vice versa. But Julien Dugnoille, an expert at Exeter University, suspects dog-walking has a deeper significance. Dogs, he suggests, are a useful aid to a socially awkward nation. “Britons tend to see dog-walking as a rare opportunity to socialise with strangers, to have a chat with strangers and exchange a few jokes and comments about the weather without putting themselves in danger (ie, without being too committed in their interaction).” A tradition among the British aristocracy (贵族) of owning and training dogs also leads Dr Dugnoile to suspect that dog-walking retains some of its ancient kudos. When people in the park say “Max is very well-behaved,” says Dr Dugnoille, “that is a way to demonstrate mastery in the art of taming(驯养), an advantage over those dog owners who are ‘not in control of their own dog’.” But it’s not just about showing off, in his view. He believes walking with one’s best friend creates a time and space where dogs and humans meet as species and connect as individuals. Still, Britons should not congratulate themselves too much on their behavior towards their dog companions, for they are guilty of a universal hypocrisy (虚伪). According to Dr Carri Westgarth of Liverpool University, “People say that a dog needs a walk every day, but they will find reasons why their dog doesn’t need a walk. They’ll say: he’s got company indoors, he’s nervous or he doesn’t like the rain.” 12. What is the purpose of mentioning the queen in paragraph 1? A. To inform us of a foreigner’s impression of England B. To show the British devotion to walking dogs C. To tell us the importance of dog-walking for Europeans D. To demonstrate the queen’s love for walking with her companion 13. What does Dr Dugnoille most probably agree with? A. Britons see dogs as protectors from danger. B. Dog-walking is related to the British culture. C. Britons prefer to walk rather than walk the dog. D. Dog-walking is a close link between the British and nature. 14. What does the underlined word “kudos” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Practice. B. Belief. C. Honor. D. Manner. 15. What would be the best title for the text? A. Love Your Dog, Walk Your Dog B. How Do Britons Walk Their Dogs? C. Dog-walking, the New Fashion D. Why Do Britons Love to Walk Dogs? 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Choose Your Purpose-Filled Career When you think about choosing a career, you often do it in the following two ways. ____16____. With a burning sense of responsibility, Mike loved his job so much that he always went the extra mile. In the very early morning, Tim could always see Mike busy with breakfast for him. Later on, they went to school together to accompany the students to greet a new day of learning. At table, Mike exchanged what he knew in school with Tim. Typically, Mike would always wear a shiny smile for the funny moments; frown for his students’ problems or challenges. At that moment, Tim did feel his father’s passion for the class. Having finished the housework and said goodnight to Tim, Mike, eventually, sat at his desk peacefully and buried himself in what he enjoyed. In the delicate light of a lamp, he made preparations for the next day, trying to make what students found boring in the textbook come to life. Sometimes, Mike worried Tim might be envious of the attention he gave to other children. However, Tim didn’t complain about it. Instead, he admired his dedication and love. It was one of the qualities that made Mike such a fantastic father. Tim liked making videos of activities in daily life, and kept his camera handy in case there was any opportunity to capture footage (捕捉片段). Also, he captured some of Mike’s. One weekend, Tim approached Mike’s room, hoping to get advice on making videos for the next class meeting themed Love, only to find Mike staring at the photos of his students on the wall, a little upset. “What happened?” Tim asked as he stepped into Mike’s room. “You know, some of your classmates recently have been rebellious (叛逆的). Despite discipline and heartfelt communications, they’re still breaking rules, skipping classes and complaining about my strictness. Though I could be demanding sometimes, I’m concerned about them. ” Mike sighed. Thinking of his upsetting classmates who couldn’t sense Mike’s efforts, Tim decided to try to do his part in helping Mike out in secret. 【答案】4. B 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第二段“After suffering a hand injury while boxing, he was forced to move on from Muay Thai.(在拳击时手受伤后,他被迫放弃泰拳)”可知,他放弃学习泰拳是因为手部受伤了,故选B项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“The atmosphere inside the kitchen attracted him — everyone had to come together to make it happen.(厨房里的气氛吸引了他——每个人都必须团结起来才能完成这一切)”可知,Corneliussen是被厨房中团队合作的氛围所启发,决定成为一名厨师。故选A项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第三段“It’s a view he doesn’t agree with today. He thinks now that no cooking style is more important than another.(但他如今已不再认同这种观点了。他认为如今任何一种烹饪方式都同等重要,没有哪种烹饪方式比其他方式更重要)”可知,Corneliussen 认为现在没有哪种烹饪风格比另一种更重要,可推理出他认为所有烹饪风格都同等重要。故选C项。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Nilas Corneliussen is the Swedish-born head chef of a Nordic-Asian combination restaurant in Thailand’s capital.(尼拉斯·科内利乌森是出生于瑞典的一位主厨,他在泰国首都经营着一家融合了北欧和亚洲元素的餐厅)”以及文章主要介绍了Corneliussen 与泰国的渊源以及他成为厨师的经历。由此可推知,文章主要讲述了一位出生于瑞典的厨师长在泰国的故事。A 选项“一位出生于瑞典的厨师长在泰国”符合主旨。故选A项。 C From Smells to Soundtracks When a young sawfly, a bee-like insect, is threatened by its attackers like ants, it emits (排放) a mixture of unpleasant smells to defend itself. First they figured out which molecules (分子) were present in each smelly compound and in what amounts. C. Humans dislike the sound as much as ants hate the smells. A. explain ways to transfer smells into soundtracks B. demonstrate a scientific study on insects’ smells C. introduce a research on sawfly’s effect on humans D. test out people’s reaction to various soundtracks 【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. There may be something in the stereotype. Data from Tractive, a firm that provides GPS tracking for pets, show that Britons walk their dogs more than their European neighbours do. The British love for dog-walking may have more to do with the walking than the dogs. Britons are big walkers—they came fifth in the world in a study in 2017, the highest in Europe. 【答案】12. B 13. B 14. C 15. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。讲述了英国人为什么喜欢遛狗,文章引用了几位专家的观点对英国人热爱遛狗的原因进行解释。 【12题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段““When I think of England, I think of the queen taking her dogs for a walk in the countryside,” says Carsten Haferkamp, a dog-owning German architect working in London.”(“当我想到英国时,我会想到女王带着她的狗在乡间散步,”在伦敦工作的养狗的德国建筑师卡斯滕·哈弗坎普说。)结合下文,文章具体讲述了英国人喜欢遛狗,可知第一段提到女王是为了表达英国人对遛狗的热爱。故选B项。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“But Julien Dugnoille, an expert at Exeter University, suspects dog-walking has a deeper significance. Dogs, he suggests, are a useful aid to a socially awkward nation. “Britons tend to see dog-walking as a rare opportunity to socialise with strangers, to have a chat with strangers and exchange a few jokes and comments about the weather without putting themselves in danger (ie, without being too committed in their interaction).””(但埃克塞特大学(Exeter University)的专家朱利安·达尼耶(Julien Dugnoille)怀疑遛狗有更深层次的意义。 根据第四段划线词后句“When people in the park say “Max is very well-behaved,” says Dr Dugnoille, “that is a way to demonstrate mastery in the art of taming, an advantage above those dog owners who are ‘not in control of their own dog’.”(当公园里的人说“麦克斯表现得很好,”达尼耶博士说,“这是一种展示驯养技巧的方式,比那些‘无法控制自己的狗’的狗主人更强”。)结合“A tradition among the British aristocracy (贵族) of owning and training dogs”(英国贵族的传统养狗和训练狗),可知“A tradition among the British aristocracy (贵族) of owning and training dogs also leads Dr Dugnoile to speculate that dog-walking retains some of its ancient kudos.”(英国贵族的传统对养狗和训练狗的研究也让杜格诺伊尔博士推测,遛狗仍保留着一些古老的荣誉。)可知,此处kudos意义为“荣誉”,Honor荣誉,符合题意。故选C项。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Data from Tractive, a firm that provides GPS tracking for pets, show that Britons walk their dogs more than their European neighbours do.”(为宠物提供GPS跟踪服务的Tractive公司的数据显示,英国人遛狗比欧洲邻居多。)以及第二段“The British love for dog-walking may have more to do with the walking than the dogs.”(英国人对遛狗的热爱可能与遛狗有关,而不是与狗有关。)结合全文,可知本文讲述了英国人为什么喜欢遛狗,文章引用了几位专家的观点对英国人热爱遛狗的原因进行解释。Why Do Britons Love to Walk Dogs? 为什么英国人喜欢遛狗?符合题意。故选D项。 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Choose Your Purpose-Filled Career When you think about choosing a career, you often do it in the following two ways. ____16____. If you like writing or doing crafts, you might consider these things. This is not a bad way to go, of course, but you can’t always make money doing things you like (like video games or drinking beer). And sometimes things you like are better as a hobby or side passion. Think about a well-paid job that you can do and doesn’t sound so bad. Maybe a doctor, engineer or lawyer? Or maybe that’s out of your educational reach, so you choose office or retail worker. ___17___ but often they are not something you’re really passionate about. It’s kind of like just doing something because it’s there-- not very inspired. However, there’s another way that is perhaps better: ____18____. For example, taking care of children, because you really want to help children get a great start in life, or blossom into who they want to be or getting into government or social work to improve the conditions of the community you live in or becoming a scientist to help ease the environmental crisis or find a cure for a terrible disease. ____19____ and if you choose one of them for that purpose, you will serve in that work feeling a sense of purpose each day. There are endless ways to do that. The point isn’t how you serve the world, but just serving the world in some way will help you feel filled with purpose. ____20____. A. These are all great choices B. Think about what you like to do C. You can identify your purpose and work out how to get there D. Each of these is just one of many possibilities filled with purpose E. Try to do something to serve a community or make the world better F. The sooner you complete the training requirements, the sooner you will make a living G. If you choose a purposeful and enjoyable job, you’re always further along than most people 【答案】16. B 17. A 18. E 19. D 20. He started looking for footage for the video, capturing every piece of footage he could use. These clips record Mike’s daily tasks for the children. With them, Tim searched for the rebellious children on the photo wall and quietly filmed Mike’s dedication and care for the children. These clips contain Mike’s heart communications, hard work, and most importantly, love. When the day came for the class meeting, Tim volunteered to play a video for the class. The students, along with Mike got surprised when the video came to an end. To Mike’s surprise, the rebellious students, those who broke school rules, often played truant and always complained about his strictness were full of tears. They stood up slowly, bowed deeply to Mike, and sincerely said “Mike, thank you for all your efforts for us.” Mike was so moved that he gave each of them a big hug.
