Annie Smith, 32, went into labor as floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey surrounded her

apartment. With the roads underwater, the two-mile drive to the hospital was impossible. Annie and
her husband, Greg, both doctors, began preparing for a home birth.
Greg rushed to gather supplies — scissors, sewing needles — while his mother boiled water to
sterilize (消毒) them. “I’m really starting to get scared now,” Annie told Greg as the reality set in. A
neighbor, checking on the Smiths, sent an email to their apartment complex’s message board asking
for help. Within 30 minutes, at least 15 people showed up, including medical trainees from the complex.
Meanwhile, the couple had been continuously dialing 911 but never got an answer. Finally, a
call to the director of Annie’s fellowship program led to action. The director’s father, who lived near
a fire station, walked there to explain the situation.
Around noon, a rescue truck arrived. By then, the water had reached to a formidable level that
the vehicle couldn’t get close. The Smiths’ neighbors and firefighters formed a human chain to help
Annie Smith to the back of the flatbed truck. “I held onto them one person at a time,” she said, moving
on her hands and knees along their arms until she reached the ladder safely. She sat on a blanket in the
truck, a shower curtain over her head, as they drove through the flood.
The Smiths arrived at Texas Children’s Hospital about 15 minutes later. An hour later, their
daughter Adrielle was born, weighing 7 pounds, 6 ounces. The couple, exhausted but relieved,
appreciated the neighbors and firemen who had come to their aid. “It was absolutely incredible how
many people responded and were out in the rain trying to help us,” Annie said.
24.Why did the Smiths at first prepare for a home birth?
A.Drivers were hard to reach. B.The hospital was inaccessible.
C.The emergency services were off duty. D.They were suggested by doctors.
25.Who played an important role in calling the rescue truck?
A.A neighbour. B.Greg’s mother.
C.A medical trainee. D.The director’s father.
26.What does the underlined word “formidable” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Average. B.Awesome. C.Scary. D.Normal.
27.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To record an unforgettable disaster.
B.To remember the respected firemen.
C.To praise the love within the community.
D.To raise funds for Annie’s fellowship program.

In today’s digital age, there exists a phenomenon (现象) where excessive (过度的) learning can
lead to inaction, a state of being overwhelmed by too much information.
Consider a situation where you’re eager to achieve a particular goal. You begin by conducting
extensive research, diving deep into the subject. As you take in more information, it paradoxically (矛
盾地) feels like your understanding weakens. Each new concept (理念) or strategy reveals further
layers, making the goal seem more complex and out of reach.
This situation is a common trap: the endless pursuit (追求) of more information. Although
第 5 页,共 9 页
there’s nothing wrong with learning a lot, issues arise when this effort gets in the way of practical
application. If learning continuously prevents you from starting, you’ll find yourself stuck, unable to
achieve your desired outcomes.
An alternative and more effective approach to achieving goals is to strike a balance between
learning and doing. Gather essential information, then jump into action rapidly, even if you feel
somewhat unprepared. This is often the best way to learn, as hands-on experience provides insights
that theoretical (理论的) knowledge alone cannot.
The comparison with a baby learning to walk is a good example here. A baby doesn’t learn to
walk by sitting and analyzing the process. Instead, it learns by attempting to walk, falling, and then
understanding from each fall what works and what doesn’t. Through repeated effort, walking is
eventually grasped. This method is applicable to goal achievement too. By taking action, learning from
the outcomes, and adjusting accordingly, you gradually move closer to your goals.
In summary, while the pursuit of knowledge is valuable, it’s important not to let it become a
barrier to action. Learning should be a stepping stone to doing, not an end in itself. It’s through the
interplay of gathering knowledge and applying it that we can truly progress towards our ambitions.
28.What stops people from achieving the goal?
A.The confusion caused by the information.
B.The inability to find related information.
C.The distraction caused by unrelated tasks.
D.The desire to learn basic concept or strategy.
29.What does the author try to advocate in paragraph 3 and 4?
A.Gaining as much knowledge as possible.
B.Sticking to continuous learning.
C.Taking practical action without delay.
D.Focusing on theoretical knowledge in study.
30.Why is the example “baby learning to walk” mentioned in Paragraph 5?
A.To compare different learning styles.
B.To stress the need for parental guidance.
C.To show the importance of making mistakes.
D.To illustrate learning through action and experience.
31.What makes the best title for the passage?
A.The Process of Accessing Information. B.The Significance of Hands-on Experience.
C.The Pursuit of Advanced Knowledge. D.The Balance of Learning and Doing.

Just as damaged teeth can be replaced with gold crowns (齿冠), scientists are exploring how
gold can be used to repair damaged parts of the brain.
Scientists at Linkoping University in Sweden said that a “brain of gold” might just be what we
need to fight nervous system diseases. The plan is to put gold electrodes (电极) into the affected part
of the brain. They will act as “telephone operators” between nerve cells and electronic medical devices,
第 6 页,共 9 页
enabling communication so that the nervous system can function normally.
Treatment plans that involve connecting medical devices to the brain already exist. However,
the electrodes used are usually made of hard metals, while the brain is like a jelly that “shakes” at the
body’s slightest movement.
“As the body is constantly in motion, achieving close contact between something that is hard
and something that is soft and breakable becomes a problem,” explained Klas Tybrandt, one of the
scientists.
This is why the Swedish scientists are using a new material called “gold nanowires” (金纳米
线). As the name suggests, these are long, extremely thin gold threads — 1,000 times thinner than
human hair. By putting them into rubber, the scientists have successfully created electrodes that are
soft enough to connect comfortably with the human brain.
Gold can be made into structures as small as nanowires. According to Live Science, gold can be
stretched (拉长), pressed or even rolled into all kinds of shapes without breaking. What’s more, gold
doesn’t react with other chemicals in the human brain, making it a safe choice. Once placed in the
brain, gold nanowires can last for at least three years, which is longer than many materials currently
in use.
32.What role will gold electrodes play in treating nervous system diseases?
A.Serving as a communication link. B.Replacing damaged nerve cells.
C.Protecting the brain’s unaffected parts. D.Activating different brain regions.
33.What can we learn about gold nanowires?
A.They are as thin as human hair. B.They can be placed into the brain.
C.They are harder than rubber. D.They are in the final stage of development.
34.Why is gold a safe choice for use in the brain?
A.It can be stretched by the brain.
B.It can be made into various shapes.
C.It is being used to create soft electrodes.
D.It does no harm to the brain’s natural functions.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The history of gold use in the medical field.
B.The current applications of gold in the brain.
C.The unique characteristics of gold nanowires.
D.The promising role of gold in nervous system treatment.

How exercise improve heart and lung health.
37 If you do a balanced routine that includes cardio(有氧运动), strength training,
and flexibility exercises, your body gets better at using oxygen. When you exercise regularly, your
heart and lungs work more efficiently, pumping oxygen-rich blood to your muscles and organs. This
can lead to a lower risk of heart disease and improved respiratory(呼吸的)function.

Lately, scientists have been exploring how physical activity affects our mental health. Wellness
centers worldwide are now offering Mental Health Fitness Programs. These programs let people take
part in exercises designed to enhance both physical and mental health. Regular exercise has been
shown to greatly lower symptoms of depression and anxiety, leading to a better mood overall. It’s like
a natural antidepressant(抗抑郁药)that doesn’t come with negative side effects.
How physical activity improves lifelong well- being.
Staying active is a basis for a high-quality life. Exercise not only maintains your physical health
and manages your emotions but also enhances your overall well-being. From hiking to swimming,
physical activities can reduce stress, lift your spirits, and give you the energy to fully engage in the
things you love. By keeping fit, you’re investing in a lifestyle that’s filled with energy. 39
While exercise is great, it’s important to pay attention to your body and avoid pushing too hard,
which can lead to injuries. 40 This helps your body handle the workout and recover
properly, ensuring you can continue to enjoy the benefits of exercise without interruption. In summary,
making exercise a regular part of your life can lead to a happier, healthier you.
A. How exercise influences physical health.

第二节 (满分 25 分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was June, the last day of school. My class of first-graders was excitedly anticipating their
summer vacation. To add a joyful flavor, I had some balloons brought in, but for me, this holiday was
bittersweet. I’d just moved to this city and couldn’t afford to fly back to accompany Dad. He was
desperately missing me, for it was his first summer without me.
When switching off the light on my way out, I noticed the balloons near the window. Unsure
what to do with them, I grabbed the thirteen strings and stuffed them into the backseat of my car. Their
rainbow of colors lifted my spirits and gratefully, I didn’t feel so alone.
As the city was still foreign to me, I decided to go for a drive and soon found myself winding
down a stretch of road where the trees overhead covered each other. The branches reminded me of two
friends stretching out to greet each other. Before long, a retirement home appeared. It was a place with
a feeling of forgottenness and I spotted a man sitting alone in the shade outside.
I felt a sudden urge to pull in. But the balloons in my backseat blocked my view-then I knew what
to do with them. Opening the door and grabbing one of the strings, I waved to the man, and he smiled.
His name was Daniel and he was about Dad’s age. When I handed him the balloon, he grinned (咧嘴
笑), “Thanks. It gives a little color to my life.” While tying it to his chair, he looked happier than when
I arrived. So I smiled, “You’re welcome, Daniel. Perhaps I’ll see you again sometime.”
Unexpectedly, he replied, “Perhaps, but probably not. Visitors are always welcome, but rarely
come.” His words forced me to slide over an old chair next to his. Then we began chatting about our
lives and his voice always reminded me of Dad. I’d thought it would be boring talking with a stranger.
But it wasn’t; it was enlightening—I had been feeling lonely, and so had Daniel, and so had the
residents in the retirement home.
