He asked, “I understand you’ve been on this ship for the last four cruises.” She replied, “Yes, that’s true.” “I don’t understand,” he said. Without waiting, she replied, “It’s cheaper than a nursing home. The cost for a nursing home is at least $200 a day. Here on the cruise, I can get a long-term discount price of $135 a day. C I often hear some of you saying, “I don’t care what other people think! I do whatever I want!” There is a strong wish for independence in adolescence (青春期) and you say you only care about your own opinion. But be honest — don’t you care about what certain people think? Most teenagers have a circle of people who can influence them. They care very much about what this circle of people think, especially about them. Most teenagers want to be independent, but they don’t want to be alone. They don’t want to stand out, away from the crowd. They want to have connection to other people, especially other teenagers. During adolescence, friendships with other teens become very important. They care about what other teenagers think because they want to be accepted and they are afraid of what other people think. Fear makes them care. Some teenagers are leaders and some are followers. You might think that teenage leaders don’t care what other people think, but that is not true. After all, a leader really isn’t a leader unless other people follow. If leaders don’t care about what followers think, those followers may leave and follow someone else. Followers care about what the leader thinks because they want to be part of the group. There is a famous playwright (剧作家) named William Shakespeare. In one of his plays, Hamlet, the character Hamlet said, “To thin e own self be true.” In other words, whatever you do, always be true to yourself. Sure, teenagers can care about what other people think of them, but the most important thing is what they think of themselves. This is one of the most important tasks that teenagers should have. 18. What do we know about teenagers from the text? A. They value friendship. B. They have difficulty making friends. C They are deaf to others’ advice. D. They keep themselves away from others. 19. Why does the author mention William Shakespeare? A. To introduce his play Hamlet. B. To state he is a famous playwright. C. To add some humor to the article. D. To help illustrate the author's view. 20. What is the best title for the text? A. Teenagers: follow your heart B. Teenagers: believe in yourself C. Why do teenagers want to be independent? D. Why do teenagers care what other people think? D We are encountering real-world examples of how AI can harm human relations. As digital assistants such as Alexa or Siri become popular, we are becoming accustomed to talking to them as though they were alive; writing in these pages last year, Judith Shulevitz described how some of us are starting to treat them as friends and therapists. Shulevitz herself says she confesses things to Google Assistant that she wouldn’t tell her husband. If we grow more comfortable talking to our devices about our secrets, what happens to our human marriages and friendships? Designers and programmers typically create devices whose responses make us feel better—but may not help us be self-reflective or think over painful truths. As AI goes deeper into our lives, we must face the possibility that it will prevent our emotions and deep human connects. Besides, we will fight with some other challenges. The age of driverless cars, after all, is upon us. These vehicles promise to substantially reduce the exhaustion and distraction that put human drivers in danger, thus preventing accidents. But what other effects might they have on people? Driving is a very modern kind of social interaction, requiring high levels of cooperation. I worry that driverless cars, by taking away from us an occasion to exercise this ability, could contribute to its decline. Not only will these vehicles be programmed to take over driving duties and hence to remove from humans the power to make moral judgments (for example, about which pedestrian to hit when a crash is inevitable), they will also affect humans with whom they’ve had no direct contact. For instance, drivers who have steered awhile alongside an autonomous vehicle traveling at a steady, invariant speed might drive less attentively, thus increasing their likelihood of accidents once they’ve moved to a part of the highway occupied only by human drivers. Alternatively, experience may reveal that driving alongside autonomous vehicles travelling in perfect accordance with traffic laws actually improves human performance. Either way, we should be careful to launch new forms of AI without first taking such social spillovers—or externalities, as they’re often called—into account. We must apply the same effort that we apply to the hardware and software that make self-driving cars possible to managing AI’s potential effects on those outside the car. After all, we install brake lights on the back of your car not just, or even primarily, for your benefit, but for the sake of the people behind you. 21. What can be inferred about human relationships from the first paragraph? A. We will feel comfortable speaking to others online. B. AI will lead to shallow inter-personal relationships. C. AI will enable people to communicate more with others. D. We will be more self-reflective in interaction thanks to AI. 22. In paragraph 2, the phrase “its decline” refers to the decline in ________. A. drivers’ interaction with the cars B. drivers’ exhaustion and distraction C. our ability to cooperate with others while driving D. our ability to deal with emergencies while driving 23. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true of driverless cars? A. They may be better at making more judgments than human drivers. B. They need to vary their speed to make contact with human drivers. C. They may make human drivers in other cars drive more safely. D. They need to force human drivers to concentrate in the car. 24. Which of the following is the writer most likely to agree with? A. Brake lights on the back of our car are installed mainly to warn us of danger. B. We should figure out how new technology affects people before developing it. C. It is hard to say why social spillovers will work in terms of self-driving cars. D. More effort should be made to advance the hardware and software of driverless cars. 第三节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 While most of us work hard to shine at the presentations and speeches we can prepare for, we may find impromptu (即兴的) communication scary. Actually, you just need to learn specific skills to communicate effectively when put on the spot. Here are a few pointers. ____25____What do you want your audience to know? How do you want them to feel, and what do you want them to do? Having a clear objective paired with an awareness of your audience will narrow your focus. Then you can prioritize what to say and choose your exact words more wisely. Organize Your Thoughts. When making formal presentations, most people give a logical structure that audiences can easily follow. But few of us adequately organize thoughts in impromptu situations. ____26____ In fact, the best speakers maintain audience interest by demonstrating connections among specific points, ideas, for example. Listen as well as you talk. ____27____ You should do the opposite: focus on listening so that you can better understand the in-the-moment needs and interests of your conversation partners and respond more effectively. Paraphrasing or asking open-ended follow-up questions can help confirm your understanding and provide extra time to think about your response. Dare to be dull. Don’t feel you need to give a standout performance. One popular saying applies here, “____28____” Listeners are more likely to trust and approve of you when you speak like a human being rather than an actor or a robot. Research shows that the most effective speech includes moderate use of fillers such as “um” and “uh”. The real problem in impromptu communication isn’t an inability to communicate.____29____Fortunately, a measure of experimentation thought, and practice of the skills can make impromptu speaking opportunities your time to shine. A. Identify a communication goal. B. He knows most who speaks least. C. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. D. It’s being so nervous that we struggle with the talks. E. We may assume that it’s impossible to do so on the fly. F. A clear structure enhances comprehension and engagement. G. P. Lovecraft wrote that “the oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” Uncertainty causes people to see threats everywhere they look, and at the same time it makes them likely to react emotionally. Even minor periods of unpredictability can cause significant negative effects. Research on traffic jam, for example, has found that the lack of control drivers feel sends stress and anger levels through the roof. Uncertain bus, train, and plane delays are also major sources of uncertainty-triggered distress. One study found that giving people up-to-the-minute wait times was an effective way to limit anxiety and frustration. Even if the wait for a bus turned out to be long, removing the element of uncertainty made commuters feel better. Different people respond to uncertainty in different ways. Unfortunately, many are unhelpful coping strategies. People who struggle with uncertainty often respond to it by worrying. They also tend to think that worrying will somehow help them prepare for what’s to come. This is false. The more people engage in worrying, the less they feel confident in their ability to solve a problem and the worse their solutions tend to be. Trying to seek out new and helpful information can also backfire. BMC Public Health found that people can only process and make sense of a limited information, and that consuming too much new information can lead to confusion and increased uncertainty. Still, how to remove the effects of uncertainty is food for thought. 50. According to H. P. Lovecraft, what is the oldest and strongest fear? __________________________________________________________ 51. Why can up-to-the-minute wait times limit anxiety? __________________________________________________________ 52. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. ▶People who worry more will feel less confident in problem-solving, while their solutions tend to be better. __________________________________________________________ 53.
