There is a famous story about how Walt Disney was inspired to build Disneyland. The story goes that during an afternoon visit to Griffith Park located near the Burbank Studios, Walt took a seat while his two young daughters rode the merry-go-round. Walt thought there should be a place where both children and their parents could enjoy spending some time together in an environment that would be both entertaining and pleasing to the eye, so with this thought came the idea for Disneyland.
Walt’s original plan was to build an eight-acre park located near the Burbank Studios that would be a place for his employees and their families. Those plans were put on hold because of the start of World War II. By 1952, Walt had created a special department to build the park.
Finally in 1953, the first steps in building the park happened when Walt hired the Stanford Research Institute to make a survey to determine the best possible location for the future park. Considering population growth and the future freeway construction, they finally found a location in Anaheim and 160 acres of land were bought for the site of the new park.
The building of the park was very expensive and to create funding for the project Walt developed the idea of the “Walt Disney’s Disneyland” television show. It turned out to be a marvelous idea — not only gaining the money to build the park but also presenting the park to the American public.
Construction officially began on July 21, 1954, and it was an ambitious (野心勃勃的) building schedule of less than one year to complete the new park for the projected opening day. Walt watched over the park’s construction and progress continued with just a few minor hold-ups. Finally, the park was ready for the Opening Day on July 17, 1955.
24. What inspired Walt Disney to build Disneyland?
A. The special design of Griffith Park.
B. A trip to a park with his daughters.

25. What is mainly considered in choosing the location of Disneyland?
A. Walt Disney’s personal preference.
B. The natural environment.
C. The advice of the public.
D. Local traffic.
26. What does the underlined word “marvelous” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Funny. B. Wild.
C. Wonderful. D. Imaginative.
27. What can we learn about the construction process?
A. It was smooth generally.
B. It was affected by World War II.
C. It was completed later than expected.
D. It was influenced by a shortage of money.

A facial recognition app, recently developed by scientists, will make it easier to identify pandas.
Wan Yongqing, a Beijing photographer, visits Sichuan Province to take photos of pandas every other year. He has watched them for more than a decade. “My friends say I’m a big panda fan. It is a shame that I find all pandas look the same, with black eyes and white fur. It does not matter as all the pandas are cute to me,” he said.
Yet, identifying one panda from another does matter to researchers, according to Zhang Zhihe, chief of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. “Identifying individual pandas is important for conservation management and research. For captive (被圈养的) pandas, it is important for their daily feeding schedules, family backgrounds and data management. For wild pandas, it helps researchers study their population structure and provides scientific support for their protection and management,” he said.
China has carried out four scientific surveys on wild pandas, and now has a big databank about them. The number of wild pandas in China is mostly known. However, it is still difficult to determine the age, sex, health and other specific information about the population. “It’s difficult to track and watch the structure because wild pandas tend to live alone, deep in the mountains, and their living environment is vast,” Zhang added.
In 2017, the Chengdu base began researching individual panda identification technology by analyzing images. Over the past two years, they have built a databank of more than 120,000 images, over 1,000 video clips, and completed organizing nearly 10,000 images.
Using the databank, researchers have started a facial recognition app that can accurately recognize captive pandas by analyzing and comparing the unique features of panda faces.
Panda researchers hope the data and AI technology will help them analyze data for both captive and wild pandas.
28. How does Wan Yongqing feel about the pandas?
A. They are difficult to get along with. B. They seem quite attractive to him.
C. They are easy to recognize. D. They look safe and unusual.
29. Why is it important to identify captive pandas?
A. It is helpful for further research and data management.
B. It is useful for studying their population structure.
C. It provides proof that they need protection in the wild.
D. It helps researchers build up their living environment.
30. What makes it difficult to track and watch wild pandas?
A. They only live in a small area B. They don’t leave enough tracks.
C. They are difficult to see in the forest. D. They live alone, deep in the mountains.
31. What is necessary for the facial recognition app to work well?
A. The databank of pandas. B. The structure of pandas.
C. The invention of AI technology. D. The unique features of panda faces.

If you lack time to exercise during the working week, don’t worry. A study of nearly 90,000 participants in the UK suggests that putting all your weekly exercise on weekends still has significant health benefits compared with being inactive. In this study, participants who cram all their recommended weekly physical activity into one or two days are referred to as “weekend warriors”.
The researchers collected data from 89,573 volunteers by requiring them to wear a wrist device to track their weekly physical activity. These participants were then divided into three groups based on their exercise patterns: regular exercisers, who spread their exercise throughout the week; weekend warriors, who did most of their exercise in one day or two; and inactive participants. After grouping the participants, the researchers compared their health records to examine the related health benefits.
The study found that, compared with those who were inactive, weekend warriors and regular exercisers experienced similar health benefits, with both groups having a lower risk of developing more than 200 diseases. Specifically, the strongest effects were for cardio metabolic diseases. Both groups had a 20% lower risk of high blood pressure and a 40% lower risk of diabetes.
Dr. Shaan Khurshid, a cardiologist at Massachusetts general hospital in Boston, who led the study, said, “It shows that, for health benefits, it’s really the amount of physical activity rather than its frequency that matters. The key is, however, you are going to get that amount, do it in the way that works for you.
Khurshid also mentioned the need for more research to explore whether the “weekend warrior” workout pattern could help people reach their activity goals more easily. “It might be more convenient for some people and help them follow public health advice better,” he said.
32. According to the study, “weekend warriors” refer to those who ______
A. stay inactive during the whole week.
B. avoid any physical activity during the weekends.
C. exercise moderately every day during the whole week.
D. pack the recommended physical activity into the weekend.
33. How did the researchers test the health benefits in the three groups?
A. By checking their physical health. B. By comparing their health records.
C. By reviewing their exercise records. D. By examining their workout patterns.
34. According to Dr. Khurshid, what is more important for health benefits?
A. How often you exercise each week. B. How long you exercise each time.
C. How much exercise you do each week. D. How much effort you put into exercise.
35. What can we infer about the “weekend warrior” workout pattern?
A. It follows public health advice.
B. It might suit people with busy schedules.
C. It could help people reach their workout goals.
D. It will soon be promoted as the best exercise plan.

It was an early winter morning. Joan was sleeping soundly when the phone rang in the living room. She rolled over and glanced at the clock on the wall—it was already nine o’clock. Every weekend morning, her mother had to work part-time in the cafe. Although Joan was still sleepy, she knew she had to get up. After all, she didn’t expect her brother Mike, who was sleeping like a log, to hear the phone. She quietly went over to the living room. When she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warmhearted greetings, “Good morning, my Dear!” Recognizing the voice from her father, Joan was immediately surrounded by a sense of joy and the sleepiness swept away.
Joan’s father was a seaman, who rarely came back. Working on the sea was really hard. Born in a not-rich family, Joan and Mike felt the stress of life but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere.
“Good morning, Dad, what’s up?” Joan said in an easy tone. “I have been very nice recently, my baby. Today is your mother’s birthday, and I have ordered her a cake online and it should come to the house in one and half an hour. Do remember to take the cake.”
Hearing her father’s words, Joan felt a little ashamed. How she could forget Mum’s birthday! She took a glance at the dirty clothes piled on the sofa and the oily floor that hadn’t been mopped (拖地) for a few days—There was two hours before her mother came back. She calculated they had enough time to prepare a surprise for Mum.
Thinking of this, she felt full of excitement. “Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Mike up. We will give Mum a surprise!”
Joan hung up the phone with Dad, and hurriedly went to Mike’s room to share him her Big Cleaning plan. After listening to Joan, Mike readily accepted her idea.
