The Best Leaders Aren't Decisive. They're Ambivalent. By Naomi Rothman In more than two decades of research into how leaders' decision-making has an impact on organizational success, I've uncovered a surprising insight: The most effective leaders aren't the ones who seem to have all the answers. The most-effective leaders are those who question themselves. They are, in other words, ambivalent. They feel and exhibit conflicting emotions—and are tolerant of them—and can hold two contradictory thoughts or feelings in their head. Internal conflict helps us adapt to complex situations by forcing us to seek out more information and consider alternatives. As a result, ambivalent leaders make better decisions than the leaders who are most certain of themselves. In study after study, my colleagues and I have found that ambivalent feelings allow leaders to look at the world from conflicting lenses simultaneously. They engage with competing ideas, contradictory evidence, opposing sources, conflicting knowledge and balanced feedback, and they do this even if the uncertainty causes discomfort. Ambivalent leaders face an uphill challenge in becoming leaders in the first place. One of the best ways to convince people into thinking you have what it takes to be a leader is to give definitive answers, even about subjects you know nothing about. But, our research found, the truth is exactly the opposite. In one study of 164 consulting teams in Brazil, we found that leaders who were ambivalent about the scope and direction of new projects consulted with more team members, and more frequently, than leaders who were less ambivalent. At the end of the project, clients rated these teams higher in their performance than teams led by decisive managers. 【词汇过关】 请写出下面文单词在文章中的中文意思。 1.decisive 英 [dɪˈsaɪsɪv] 美 [dɪˈsaɪsɪv] adj. __________________ 2.decision n. __________________ 3.ambivalent adj. __________________ 4.uncover 英 [ʌnˈkʌvə] 美 [ʌnˈkʌvər] v. __________________ 5.question 英 [ˈkwestʃn] 美 [ˈkwestʃn] v. __________________ 6.exhibit 英 [ɪɡˈzɪbɪt] 美 [ɪɡˈzɪbɪt] v. __________________ 7.exhibition n. __________________ 8.tolerant 英 [ˈtɒlərənt] 美 [ˈtɑːlərənt] adj. __________________ 9.contradictory 英 [ˌkɒntrəˈdɪktəri] 美 [ˌkɑːntrəˈdɪktəri] adj.__________________ 10.alternative 英 [ɒlˈtɜːnətɪv] 美 [ɑːlˈtɜrːnətɪv] n. __________________ 11.lense 英 [lenz] 美 [lenz] n.__________________ 12.uphill adj. __________________ 【词块学习】 请从文章中找到下面中文相对应的文词块。 1._______________________果断的领导 2._______________________果断的行动 3._______________________对......感到纠结 4._______________________ 揭露真相/秘密 5._______________________发现新的证据/数据 6._______________________换言之 7._______________________表现出耐心/勇气/自信 8._______________________对......很宽容 9._______________________适应 10._______________________寻找,搜寻 11._______________________向我的导师寻求建议 12._______________________探索备选方案 13._______________________别无选择 14._______________________提供其他选择 15._______________________一项又一项的研究 16._______________________ ......又...... 17._______________________日复一日 18._______________________年复一年 19._______________________《三生三世,十里桃花》 20._______________________隐形眼镜 21_______________________主动接触并深入探讨 22_______________________非常艰难、需要付出大量努力才能完成 23._______________________让别人相信某件事;说服某人做某事 24._______________________成功所需的条件,完成某事所需的能力 25._______________________用来引出与普遍认知或对方观点相反的事实 拓展练习阅读理解 Whether you’re looking to get strong, build muscle or overall become more athletic, kettlebells (壶铃) are a valid method for making progress. Increase Strength Kettlebells might not be the first implement you think of when you think about building strength. But still, kettlebells can get you very strong. Due to the construction of the weight, traditional lifts performed with kettlebells can increase muscle by making your stabilizer muscles work overtime. 51 . And the more stable you train your body to be, the more efficient your lifts become. In the strength world, movement efficiency is the pathway to getting stronger and stronger. Build Muscle Whether you use kettlebells for tempo training or explosive strategies, kettlebells have a lot of muscle-building potential. Kettlebell circuits can target any area of your body for overgrowth. Since kettlebells are great for moving between different exercises quickly, you can use these circuits to improve the intensity of your regularly scheduled workouts. 52 . Achieve Low-Impact Cardio (健心运动) Training Who says cardio has to involve pounding the pavement? There’s nothing wrong with jogging while you are doing strength training, but if your joints are unhappy with your current cardio routine, kettlebells might come to the rescue. 53 . Momentum-based kettlebell movements like swings, snatches, and cleans will improve your work capacity and cardiovascular (心血管的) condition while being relatively low-impact. 54 Because so many bread-and-butter kettlebell moves are explosive in nature, you’ll be accomplishing several goals at once. 55 . This is the best combination for changing your body composition. Compound movements are better for fat loss as they involve more muscles and thus burn more calories. This will maximize the cardiovascular engagement, muscle stimulus, and energy consumption. A.Improve Your Heart Rate B.Change Your Body Composition C.You’ll boost your heart rate significantly while training with kettlebells D.Kettlebell training might also make up the part of your overall exercise E.The intensity boost can give your muscles the extra stimulus to spark new growth F.This means that you’ll gain the benefit of the lift itself plus extra stabilization gains G.With kettlebells, you can develop strength, build muscle, and lose body fat at the same time 外刊精选答案 【词汇过关】 请写出下面文单词在文章中的中文意思。 1.decisive 英 [dɪˈsaɪsɪv] 美 [dɪˈsaɪsɪv] adj.
