With her language skills and deep understanding of Chinese culture, Yasmine Hamed from Egypt won the African Continental Championship of the 23rd “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students. She participated in the global finals of the competition that recently concluded in Pingtan, East China’s Fujian Province.
Yasmine, 23, an undergraduate student at Cairo University, told the Global Times on Wednesday that she dreamed of becoming a bridge between the ancient civilizations of China and Egypt, fostering cultural exchanges and mutual (相互的) understanding.
“The most rewarding part of my journey of learning the Chinese language is that it opens doors for me and gives me chances to discover more about my potential. I didn’t know that I could perform on stage and I have gained much self-confidence from such experiences,” said Yasmine, whose Chinese name is Moli, which means Jasmine in China.
Reflecting on her language journey, Yasmine said that her connection with Chinese began in high school when she developed a strong interest in the meaning of Chinese characters. She was curious about the pronunciation of pinyin, which sounds so different from Arabic. Though she only learned basic greetings like “Hello”, “Thank you”, and “What’s your name”, these simple phrases left a lasting impression, sparking her deep curiosity about the Chinese language and culture.
Learning Chinese allowed Yasmine to discover some hidden talents, such as performing Huangmei opera and traditional Chinese comedic dialogue. In the global finals, she entertained the audience with an impressive performance of Huangmei opera.
While looking for a job as a Chinese translator in Cairo, Yasmine said she is eyeing a master’s degree in China in 2025. She added, “I want to be a Chinese teacher. I want to help Egyptians know the real China and Chinese culture and help Chinese people know the real Egypt and Egyptian culture. I’ll continue to work hard to become an ambassador (大使) connecting China and Egypt.”
4. What initially attracted Yasmine’s interest in Chinese language?
A. The “Chinese Bridge” competition. B. The meaning of Chinese characters.
C. The performance of Huangmei opera. D. The desire to be a Chinese teacher.
5. What can we learn about Yasmine’s experience with learning Chinese?
A. Her curiosity about Chinese grew into deeper interest.
B. Chinese characters were easy for her in high school.
C. She disliked performing on stage in the beginning.
D. She studied Chinese to work as a translator in Cairo.
6. Why does Yasmine want to become a Chinese teacher in the future?
A To earn more money. B. To live in China.
C. To explore her potential. D. To promote cultural exchange.
7. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce the history of the “Chinese Bridge” competition.
B. To describe Yasmine’s cross-cultural journey through Chinese.
C. To compare the cultural differences between China and Egypt.
D. To encourage more foreign college students to study Chinese.

Cameras can be a powerful monitoring device on the roads and in buildings, but it’s surprisingly hard to sift through vast amounts of visual data to find relevant information — namely, quickly identifying (识别) and understanding a person’s actions and behaviors as recorded by cameras in a variety of locations.
Now, University of Washington electrical engineers have developed a system to automatically track people across moving and still cameras in real time. The cameras first identify a person in a video frame, then follow that same person across multiple camera views, and can even analyze live footage (片段镜头).
The researchers say their system could save hours of sifting through CCTV footage and even change GPS systems. They are developing this to work in real time, which could help pick out people crossing in busy crossroads, or track a specific person who is avoiding the police.
The research team has tested the ability of moving and still cameras to detect and track people on the UW campus. In one experiment, graduate students installed (安装) cameras in their cars to gather data, then applied the system to successfully pick out humans and follow them in a three-dimensional space.
This new technology could be useful for security, monitoring unusual behaviors or tracking a moving suspect. It also tells store owners and business people useful information and statistics about consumers’ moving patterns. A store owner could, for example, use the tracking system to watch a shopper’s movements in the store, taking note of her interests. Then, a deal for a particular product could be displayed on a nearby screen or pushed to the shopper’s phone instantly.
Unavoidably, people will have privacy concerns, said lead researcher Jenq-Neng Hwang, but the information obtained from cameras could be coded before it’s sent to the cloud. “Cameras and recording won’t go away. We might as well take advantage of that fact and collect more useful information for the benefit of the community,” he added.
8. What does the underlined phrase “sift through” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Analyze thoroughly. B. Catch completely.
C. Send efficiently. D. Store effectively.
9. What is the key function of the system developed by UW researchers?
A. Improving the image quality of monitoring cameras.
B. Upgrading existing cameras to more advanced models.
C. Reducing human operators in monitoring live footage.
D. Tracking individuals across multiple camera views.
10. What can be inferred about the tracking system’s potential use?
A. It requires shoppers to carry special devices for identification.
B. It may raise product prices by increasing store monitoring costs.
C. It helps businesses to analyze customers for targeted advertising.
D. It will mainly benefit police work rather than private companies.
11. What can best describe the researchers’ response to privacy concerns?
A. Passive. B. Positive. C. Indifferent. D. Neutral.
D
When Genentech licensed (获得授权) experimental drug vixarelimab from Kiniksa Pharmaceuticals, its scientists thought they had a future lung medicine in their hands. Artificial intelligence (AI) came up with another plan.
It was an AI platform that led Genentech — a U.S.-based biotechnology company — to discover that the drug candidate it had licensed for its potential to target a lung condition could also work to treat bowel (肠) disease.
“It’s like, in some way, searching for a needle in a haystack,” said Aviv Regev, Genentech’s executive vice president for research and early development. “We did it based on data and algorithms. We didn’t do it based on ‘now we go back to the lab and we do large-scale experiments and we use these experiments in order to understand the biology.’”
Executives and industry experts warn that AI adoption is still at an early stage and that it will take time, possibly years, before its potential is achieved. Still, some big drug companies are increasing the use of AI to discover and develop drugs. Their hope is that the technology will help them speed up and improve a long and expensive process that often fails to deliver results.
To fulfill AI’s promise, firms are balancing the need to ensure they have the right technical capabilities, people who understand them and data to support the whole effort. “There is a data problem, a people problem and a bit of a strategy problem,” said Thomas Clozel, chief executive and co-founder of Owkin, a Paris-based company that applies AI to medical research.
Access to data and to skills specific to AI are among the major difficulties drug companies are facing to unlock the technology’s potential. “Technology is not the primary bottleneck preventing faster progress; it’s largely operational and cultural challenges,” Novartis’s head of AI and computational sciences, Bulent Kiziltan, said. “The traditional operating culture in drug companies, often slows progress.”
12. Why did Genentech license vixarelimab from Kiniksa Pharmaceuticals at first?
A. Because artificial intelligence recommended it as a lung medicine.
B. Because they believed it had the potential to become a lung medicine.
C. Because Kiniksa Pharmaceuticals promised excellent research results.
D. Because it was a mature drug with a large market share.
13. What is the main advantage of using AI in drug development?
A. Lowering development costs. B. Ensuring successful trial results.
C. Increasing research efficiency. D. Reducing traditional experiments.
14. What does Bulent Kiziltan believe limits AI application in drug companies?
A. Outdated technical ability. B. Limited data access.
C. Strict government control. D. Traditional work pattern.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. AI Replacing Drug Researchers B. AI Overcoming Technical Difficulties
C. AI Bringing Medical Success D. AI Transforming Drug Development

After class, John was excited that he had created a very satisfying work, thus walking to the back of the classroom to put his work away carefully. There, lying on the carpet in front of the classroom bookcase was a golden ticket! John picked it up. His heart raced wildly when he saw that the name line was blank. He couldn’t believe his luck!
The boys and girls in John’s class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week their teacher drew a ticket out of a box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize.
Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him! John looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other. Miss Smith was engaged in grading the papers collected earlier in the morning.
John decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize box with the six tickets he’d already earned. With so many chances, one of his tickets would be most likely to be picked! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister’s birthday, just like he had been hoping.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn’t his heartbeat. “Finders are keepers, right?”, he wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn’t earned it. Somebody must have lost it. But on the other hand, he did need this extra ticket for his great plan!

【答案】Dear Joe,
Learning that you are interested in Chinese food, I’m excited to recommend dumplings.
Dumplings are made by wrapping dough around various fillings, from pork and chives to vegetarian mixes, and can be boiled, steamed, or fried. During festivals like Chinese New Year, families gather to make them, even hiding a coin in one for good luck. Dumplings are more than just food; they’re a symbol of family unity and happiness.
I sincerely hope you can come to China. We’ll make dumplings together and enjoy this delightful experience!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)

【答案】
Paragraph 1:
John’s hand shook as he stared at the ticket. Memories flashed — his sister’s hopeful eyes when he promised the toy pig, the pride in his parents’ faces when he earned tickets through kindness. But this ticket felt different. He imagined Miss Smith’s disappointed gaze if she discovered his deceit. With a deep breath, he set the pencil down. “No,” he whispered, deciding to place the ticket where he’d found it. Just then, footsteps echoed through the hallway.
Paragraph 2:
Spotting the blank line, Miss Smith asked John what he was doing there. Not daring to look straight into her eyes, John said “I almost took a ticket that wasn’t mine.”, his neck growing hot under his collar. “Honesty is the best prize.” Instead of scolding, Miss Smith pressed the golden ticket into John’s palm. The sunlight filtered through the windows to cast golden patterns on the carpet like the ticket glowing in his palm. That evening, John placed the ticket into the box. He realized the sweetest rewards are not found in shortcuts.
