Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids. And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.
Jaramillo’s students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food restaurants outnumber grocery stores. “The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks,” she says. “They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though some are scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt in the beginning, most are eager to try something new.
Urban Sprouts’ classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as soil testing, flower-and-seed dissection, testing of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.
Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes. “We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they’re eating differently,” Jaramillo says.
She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,” she says, “and they feel successful.”
26.What do we know about Abby Jaramillo?
A.She used to be a health worker. B.She grew up in a low-income family.
C.She owns a fast food restaurant. D.She is a creator of Urban Sprouts.
27.What was a problem facing Jaramillo at the start of the program?
A.The kids’ parents distrusted her. B.Students had little time for her classes.
C.Some kids disliked garden work. D.There was no space for school gardens.
28.What can be a suitable title for the text?

Popular US YouTuber IShowSpeed (甲亢哥), whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., visited Dengfeng, Central China’s Henan Province, to learn Shaolin kung fu. Known for his energetic livestreams, he dressed in a monk’s robe (僧侣服) and bald cap (秃头帽) to experience life as a Shaolin student. His training video, which showed his teacher Liang Xiaolong, quickly became popular online. Liang, a humble (谦逊的) kung fu coach at the Henan Provincial Shaolin Wushu Center, earned praise from viewers for his kindness and skills.
Liang, born into a martial arts (武术) family in 1987, started learning kung fu at the age of 11. He teaches both foreigners and locals at the center, which promotes Shaolin culture and tourism. One unforgettable moment came when IShowSpeed volunteered to try Hard Qigong, a skill where a person is hit with a stick. Though IShowSpeed clearly felt pain, Liang encouraged him by explaining that pain was a natural part of kung fu training and life itself. Many viewers found these words inspiring.
Liang, who uses simple English to communicate with foreign students, shared his belief that kung fu helps people connect even without shared languages. He described Wushu as a bridge uniting martial arts lovers worldwide. Despite gaining attention from IShowSpeed’s video, Liang remained humble, saying that his goal was to continue teaching Shaolin traditions and promoting cultural exchanges. And this event also shows how kung fu can bring people from different cultures together.

How far can bees travel to collect food? Scientists at Penn State University used an unusual method to track (追踪) honey bees. The work helps scientists learn more about how bees collect food and how far they travel.
Researchers used simple codes called “AprilTags”, which are similar to QR codes (二维码). These codes are easy for cameras to track and work out, even when the lighting isn’t good. Over the spring and summer, the scientists marked over 32,000 young bees spread across six different hives (蜂巢). By placing a solar-powered camera and a tiny computer above the entrance to a hive, the researchers could track the movements of the each marked bee.
The new system (系统) gave the researchers a lot of information about the bees’ movements. They found that most trips outside the hive took 1 to 4 minutes. The scientists think these short trips were used for quick jobs like checking the weather. Most trips, even longer ones, were shorter than 20 minutes. But about 34% of the bees took trips that lasted longer than two hours. The scientists say this could show that the bees were making longer trips to collect food. The researchers noticed that the bees spent more time out collecting when there were fewer flowers around.
The scientists were surprised by how long the bees lived. Before the study, scientists thought honey bees lived for about 28 days. But the marked bees didn’t start collecting food until they were around two weeks old. And the researchers discovered that the bees continued to collect food for six weeks after that.
Scientists know that bees use a special “waggle dance” to communicate with each other about where to collect food. Now the researchers want to see how their new tracking information matches up with these special movements. They plan to teach beekeepers and other scientists how to use their tracking system.
33.What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A.The reason for studying honey bees. B.The way to track honey bees.
C.The living habits of honey bees. D.The place of collecting food.
34.What can we infer about bees when there are fewer flowers around?
A.They need longer sleep. B.They may be dead soon.
C.They work harder to find food. D.They fight with other insects.
35.Why were the scientists surprised at the findings in Paragraph 4?
A.Because bees stopped collecting food after 28 days.
B.Because most of the bees took trips for 2 hours.
C.Because bees lived longer than they had thought.
D.Because bees flew far away to check the weather.
36.What will researches do next in the last paragraph?
A.Put off the research on bees. B.Study the dance of other insects.
C.Teach other scientists the system. D.Change ways of tracking bees.

Face-changing is a kind of trick used in Sichuan Opera, and a skill to express different feelings and thoughts of characters in the play. It is said that face-changing came from the ancient people. 37
The skills in face-changing generally have three kinds: smearing (涂抹), blowing and pulling.
Smearing is to smear the colored paints on the face and during performance the actor would smear the paint to turn his face to another color. 38 For example, he can only smear on his nose.
Blowing can only be used with powders (粉末). During performance, the actor would dance to throw his face close to the powder and blow it. 39 The actor must pay attention to closing his eyes, mouth and holding his breath when blowing.
Pulling needs more skills. The masters draw the facial mask on a piece of silk, cut it and tie silk thread (线) to each mask before gluing them to the actor’s face. The silk thread is tied to the actor’s clothes, which is easy to control but not eye-catching. During the performance, the mask will be pulled off one by one under the cover of dancing movements. 40 The actor’s movements must be skillful and fast so that they can have a perfect performance to cheat the people’s eyes. In all, face-changing is a very special art of Sichuan Opera. It has been performed in many other Chinese operas and even abroad.
A.Each actor is dressed in traditional clothes.
B.The paints can be smeared only on a specific part to change that part.
C.They drew different shapes on their faces to drive the beasts (猛兽) away.
D.Then the face can be changed into green, red, black and so on for several times on end.
E.The powder will stick to the actor’s oiled face quickly and change it to another color.
F.Now fewer and fewer people can master the skill of face-changing.

Nowadays, toy collecting has become increasingly popular among grown-ups. Why are grown-ups so crazy about kids’ toys? Here are some people’s opinions.
I’m a Labubu collector. It looks special with its big eyes, sharp teeth, and creepy (搞怪的) smiles, which make it different from other toys. Labubu’s mix of silly and sweet styles is perfect. That’s why I treasure these little friends!
—Zhou Xin, a programmer,
23, China
I love Jellycat toys. Their soft fur (绒毛) feels gentle in my hands, bringing me back to my sweet childhood memories. After a whole day’s stressful busy work, hugging them takes my worries away. Though they never speak, they seem to understand my feelings with their smiley faces. They’re like caring friends to me.
—Fiona, an office worker,
38, the UK
Toy collecting brings joy and comfort to grown-ups, but it also brings problems. The blind box business, like Labubu from Pop Mart, makes full use of gambling psychology (赌博心理). Young people usually look for the excitement from not knowing what’s inside until they open the box, and some gradually lose control. Hundreds of collectors rush to get them for fear of missing out. This leads them to buy without thinking. For example, Wang Yu, a college student from Shanghai, even borrowed money online to buy Labubu blind boxes, which cost over 50,000 yuan. As a result, he had to ask his family for help.
Collectors should make wise decisions, or Labubu dolls and Jellycat toys may become a threat (威胁) to their bank accounts.
