Heman Bekele, the 15-year-old from Annandale who was named 2024 Kid of the Year by TIME, added another award to his list of achievements. The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes named Bekele a winner, earning him an award of $10,000 to support his research.
Bekele developed a bar of soap that helps treat skin cancer. He started the research process at age 11, inspired by the lack of affordable health care and high levels of sun exposure that happens to workers in Ethiopia in Africa, where he was born and raised. Bekele remembers seeing people there working outside in the sun without protecting their skin and he learned about the dangers of cancer from his parents.
“When I came to America, I realized how serious the situation is,” Bekele recalls. “Right now there are no affordable and accessible alternatives (替代方案) to the really expensive treatment on the market.”
A few years ago, Bekele came across imiquimod, a drug known for treating certain skin cancers. He started thinking about how to make it more accessible for those in the early stages of the disease. He imagined a bar of soap as a simple and affordable way to deliver this important medication, potentially reducing the high costs of skin cancer treatment. However, Bekele still needed to ensure that imiquimod would remain on the skin even after the soap is washed off. He solved this by mixing it with a kind of nanoparticle (纳米颗粒).
This isn’t the first time the teen has earned national recognition for his invention. In 2023, he became America’s Top Young Scientist by 3M and Discovery Education.
“A lot of people think that everything’s been done, and there’s nothing left for me to do,” Bekele told TIME. “To anybody having that thought, I’d say we’ll never run out of ideas in this world. Just keep inventing. Keep thinking of new ways to improve our world and keep making it a better place.”
4. What made Hem an Bekele start developing the cancer-fighting soap?
A. The awards he received. B. The cruel reality he saw.
C. His interest in making inventions. D. His curiosity about medical science.
5. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to?

6. What can we learn about Heman Bekele?
A. He has won three famous titles. B. His research began in adulthood.
C. He has always been living in Africa. D. His parents suffered from skin cancer.
7. What does Bekele try to express in the last paragraph?
A. There is no end to learning. B. There is no limit to creativity.

Chinese calligraphy, known as shūfǎ, is the art of writing Chinese characters as a form of aesthetic expression. The birth of Chinese calligraphy began with the formation of Chinese characters thousands of years ago, including the inscriptions (铭文) on animal bones and tortoise shells, and the ones carved on bronze vessels (青铜器皿).
An important development of the calligraphic script is the widely known shiguwen, or the inscriptions on stone drums, upon which Qinshihuang unified the writing of characters.
Shiguwen led to the invention of dazhuan (the large-seal script), and xiaozhuan (the small-seal script) that was simpler in structure. These were followed by lishu (the clerical script), kaishu (the regular script), xingshu (the running script) and caoshu (the cursive script).
Practicing calligraphy becomes a carefree dance of the Chinese brush on paper, which is far beyond communicating the meanings of the characters being written. Calligraphy is not only about writing but emphasizes the beauty of each stroke (笔画), the balance of composition, and the expression of the artist’s inner spirit. Such writing unites Chinese people living in different corners of the country from all walks of life. Whether they are a scholar, a painter, a calligrapher or a common calligraphy lover, they share the pleasure brought by calligraphy.
The role calligraphy plays in Chinese cultural tradition is also evident in the close link between it and painting. Normally, they are mentioned in a union as shuhua (calligraphy and painting). A Chinese painting often bears calligraphy, added by its creator or collectors and viewers.
In 1926, Liang Qichao, a famous thinker and educator of modern China, gave a speech titled “A Guide to Calligraphy” at Tsinghua campus, during which he said that calligraphy is the most beautiful and convenient tool for entertaining… to calm one’s heart and mind. He went on to note that calligraphy shows the beauty of lines, the reflective glare of ink, and the strength of handwriting.
8. On which did Qinshihuang base the unified writing of characters?
A. The inscriptions on shells. B. The inscriptions on bones.
C. The inscriptions on stones. D. The inscriptions on vessels.
9. Which of the following appeared first?
A. Lishu. B. Caoshu. C. Xingshu. D. Dazhuan.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The history of calligraphy. B. The function of calligraphy.
C. The combination of calligraphy and painting. D. The relationship between calligraphy and painting.
11. What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To show the attraction of calligraphy. B. To teach people to enjoy calligraphy.
C. To prove the importance of calligraphy. D. To encourage people to learn calligraphy.

I always had a tough time in school. My father had put it best: “Some kids are good in school, and some aren’t. You’re just one of the kids who isn’t.” But I wasn’t satisfied with that answer.
Ever since the first day of school, it had been drilled into my brain that I must work for academic success. Our principal told us many times about striving for greatness.
But school wasn’t the worst of my troubles; my time at home had the greatest effect on me. Whether it was the glowing reports on my brothers, or even the A’s and B’s on their report cards, I felt I wasn’t as good. That I was inferior.
By fourth grade, my self-confidence had dropped considerably and I became depressed. As I only had a couple of friends, and I wasn’t even sure if they liked me, I had no one to talk to. I would lie awake at night and wonder if my life had some meaning. Weren’t my brothers embarrassed by me? Did they see me as the failure of the family? The black sheep? Tears would soak my pillow.
In high school, without special education, I had to find new ways to help myself do better in school. But the pain from the past six years had caught up with me, and I hated studying. I had had enough failure in my life. Why add more salt to the wound?
One night during my sophomore year, I was working with my math teacher. I just wasn’t getting it, and it had been going on like that for a few weeks. My teacher finally had it, and started shouting at me in front of the entire crowd of kids. “How dumb can you be? We’ve been reviewing the same four math steps for three weeks now. If you don’t start shaping up soon, you’ll end up being a failure.” It was the first time that someone had said “You’re a failure” right to my face.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I stormed out of the room and went back home, throwing myself into my mother’s arms.

Tears streaming down my face, I sobbed out what had happened in the math class and my long-pent-up feelings of being a failure. “Mom, am I really that stupid? Will I always be a failure?” I asked weakly. My mother gently stroked my back and said softly, “My dear, everyone has their own pace and strengths. Just because you find math difficult doesn’t mean you’re a failure. You’re kind-hearted, helpful, and have a lot of other good qualities. Don’t let one teacher’s words define you.” She held me tightly and told me that she believed in me and that I could succeed as long as I didn’t give up.
My mother’s words cheered me up and I decided to make a new beginning. I started to face my studies with a positive attitude. For math, which I was weak in, I asked my teacher for extra help after class and spent more time doing exercises. I also found some learning methods that suited me, such as making study plans and summarizing knowledge points. In the process, I encountered many difficulties, but whenever I wanted to give up, I would think of my mother’s words. Slowly, I began to make progress. My grades in other subjects also improved. More importantly, I regained my self-confidence and realized that I was not a failure. I was just on my own path to growth.
