(2025·泰安二模)It's been nearly seven years since a group of volunteers broke ground at What Cheer Flower Farm in Providence, Rhode Island, with a simple goal: get flowers into the hands of anyone in need of a pickmeup.Best of all, each one of the tens of thousands of bouquets that What Cheer grows and delivers are completely free of charge.
“We want to blanket the state with flowers and create happiness and joy,” says Erin Achenbach, What Cheer's farmer and head florist.
What Cheer regularly delivers joy to people at local hospitals, food banks, senior centers, recovery centers and moreincluding AIDS Care Ocean State, which provides support to those affected by HIV.
“Seeing the smiles on people's faces who weren't expecting it—who just came in to have a meeting with their case manager or take advantage of one of our programs—to just see this glow come off their faces is great,” says Stephen Hogan Jr.from AIDS Care Ocean State.
Located in Providence's industrial Olneyville neighborhood, What Cheer's flower beds lie on 2.7 acres that once housed a knife factory. And it's safe to say that the What Cheer crew is deserving of some flowers of their own: In May, the nonprofit was awarded a recordhigh$500,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency for its continued revival of a land once abandoned because of industrial pollution.
“Not only do we give this space back to the neighborhood by bringing life to space that' s quite literally dead,” says Achenbach, “but we're an ecolanding spot with the ability to help local insect and bird populations, and that'll only make people's lives better.” What cheer, indeed!
“What's good about a flower is that it doesn't need anything else,” she adds.“Your only job when someone gives you flowers is to enjoy them.”
4.What was the original purpose of What Cheer?
A.To donate money to those in need.
B.To present people with flowers for free.
C.To protect the surrounding environment.
D.To develop new flowers and distribute them.
5.Why could What Cheer obtain a high grant?
A.It ranked as the local largest flower bed.
B.It helped patients recover from illnesses.
C.It delivered remarkable joy to local people.
D.It was transformed into an ecofriendly area.
6.What can be inferred from Achenbach?
A.The success of What Cheer can't be copied.
B.What Cheer improves the wellbeing of locals.
C.What Cheer attempts to return the land to locals.
D.Enjoying flowers should be advocated every day.
7.Which of the following does the experience of What Cheer convey?
A.Still water runs deep.
B.Think twice before acting.

D.The roses in her hand; the flavor in mine.
由文章第一段“It's been nearly seven years since a group of volunteers broke ground at What Cheer Flower Farm in Providence, Rhode Island, with a simple goal: get flowers into the hands of anyone in need of a pickmeup.Best of all, each one of the tens of thousands of bouquets that What Cheer grows and delivers are completely free of charge.(一群志愿者在罗得岛州普罗维登斯的What Cheer Flower Farm破土动工已经快七年了,他们的目标很简单:把花送到需要提神的人手中。最重要的是,What Cheer种植和运送的成千上万束鲜花中的每一束都是完全免费的。)”可知,What Cheer最初的目的是向需要的人免费赠送鲜花。故选B。
5.D 细节理解题。由文章第五段中的“And it's safe to say that the What Cheer crew is deserving of some flowers of their own: In May, the nonprofit was awarded a recordhigh$500,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency for its continued revival of a land once abandoned because of industrial pollution.(可以肯定地说,What Cheer的工作人员也应该得到一些嘉奖:今年5月,这家非营利组织获得了美国环境保护署创纪录的50万美元拨款,以表彰它继续恢复一片曾因工业污染而被遗弃的土地。)”
由文章倒数第二段“‘Not only do we give this space back to the neighborhood by bringing life to space that' s quite literally dead,’ says Achenbach, ‘but we're an ecolanding spot with the ability to help local insect and bird populations, and that'll only make people's lives better.’ What cheer, indeed!
通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段中“It's been nearly seven years since a group of volunteers broke ground at What Cheer Flower Farm in Providence, Rhode Island, with a simple goal: get flowers into the hands of anyone in need of a pickmeup.Best of all, each one of the tens of thousands of bouquets that What Cheer grows and delivers are completely free of charge.(一群志愿者在罗得岛州普罗维登斯的What Cheer Flower Farm破土动工已经快七年了,他们的目标很简单:把花送到需要提神的人手中。最重要的是,What Cheer种植和运送的成千上万束鲜花中的每一束都是完全免费的。)”和第二段“‘We want to blanket the state with flowers and create happiness and joy,’ says Erin Achenbach, What Cheer's farmer and head florist.(‘我们想让鲜花覆盖整个州,创造幸福和喜悦,’What Cheer的农场主兼首席花商Erin Achenbach说。)” D“The roses in her hand; the flavor in mine.(她手中的玫瑰,我心中的芬芳。)”

(2025·河北联考)Since Cynthia Florio was a lifeguard at Tobay Beach in the 1990s, she has watched the ocean approach the shore and draw closer to the dunes (沙丘).It's what forced Florio, 53, of Massapequa, to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay's annual dune grass planting event on March 30—an effort to help stabilize the beach dunes against shoreline erosion (侵蚀).

根据第二段中“‘The latest dune planting event drew more than 150 volunteers who planted a lot across 2.7 acres of Atlantic Ocean sand dunes,’ said Marta Kane, an Oyster Bay spokeswoman.‘The dune grass cost the town $32,000.’(‘最近的沙丘种植活动吸引了150多名志愿者,他们在2.7英亩的大西洋沙丘上种植了很多东西。’Oyster Bay的女发言人Marta Kane说。‘沙丘草让小镇损失了3.2万美元。’)”对参加该活动的人数和其花费可知,沙丘植草活动受到大家的欢迎和支持,但有点费钱,故选A。
10.D 推理判断题。根据第三段中“She said she would go back for another event with even more family members.‘I'd be willing to do it again,’ she said.‘I'd even talk the older grand kids into coming.’(她说她会和更多的家庭成员一起回去参加另一个活动。‘我愿意再来一次,’她说。‘我甚至会说服大一点的孙子们来。’)”可知,Maria Rizzi对沙丘植草活动充满希望,积极性很高,故选D。
