He had amazing athletic abilities and was well-known during his lifetime, yet that did not make Thorpe a stranger to adversity (逆境). Thorpe was an American Indian from Oklahoma who developed his extraordinary skills in his youth through hard labor. It was also in his youth that he learned to endure hardship brought upon by racial prejudice (偏见). Many would say his childhood was not easy. He grew up poor and at age 9 his twin brother passed away and a few years later he lost both of his parents. But that did not stop him from doing what he loved and pursuing his dreams. Nothing seemed to stop him, not even stolen shoes. Just hours before Thorpe was going to compete in the Olympics, somebody stole his shoes. Thorpe improvised (临时拼凑) by getting shoes out of garbage. The shoes were two different sizes. He wore an extra pair of socks on one foot to even them out. He still went on to win two gold medals-winning each event he competed in except for one, the javelin (标枪). The javelin was the only event he didn’t win, probably because he had never competed in that event before. It is interesting to note that Thorpe had tried to throw the javelin once before in the Olympic trials. At the time, he didn’t know that he could throw it with a running start. He threw it standing still and was placed second. I think Paul Dughi said it best, “It’s hard to imagine that now professional athletes get paid millions of dollars just to wear a particular brand of shoes. For Jim Thorpe, it didn’t matter what kind he wore.” 30. What do we know about Thorpe? A. He gained athletic skills through hard training. B. His success was no guarantee of a better life. C. His career brought him both gains and losses. D. He suffered many hardships throughout his life. 31. What most likely led to Thorpe’s failure to win the javelin? A. Loss of his own sports shoes. B. A carefree attitude toward the event C. Lack of experience in the event. D. A shortage of talent for the sport 32. Which of the following words can best describe Jim Thorpe? A. Loyal and enthusiastic B. Tough and determined C. Disciplined and ambitious D. Confident and committed C Social media is one of the fastest-growing industries in today’s world. A study conducted by the US think tank (智囊团) Pew Research Center showed that 92 percent of teenagers go online daily. The wide spread of social media has changed nearly all parts of teenagers’ lives. Changing relationships High school student Elly Cooper from Illinois said social media often reduces face-to-face communication. “It makes in-person relationships harder because people give attention to their phones instead of their boyfriends or girlfriends,” Cooper said. There’s also a greater possibility of things getting lost in translation over social media. “If half of your relationship is over social media, you don’t really know how the other person is reacting,” Sienna Schulte, a junior student from Illinois, said. Yet, some people believe social media has made it easier to start relationships with anyone from anywhere. Beth Kaplan from Illinois met her long-distance friend through social media. He currently lives in Scotland, but they’re still able to frequently communicate with one another. “I can feel close to someone that I’m talking to via (通过) FaceTime,” Kaplan said. Wanting to be “liked” The rise of social media has changed the way teenagers see themselves. The 19-year-old Essena O’Neill announced on the social networking service Instagram that she was quitting social media because it made her obsessed (痴迷) with appearing perfect online. Negative comments also can do great damage to a teenager’s self-esteem (自尊). In particular, anonymous (匿名的) social media apps such as Yik Yak may provide opportunities for cyber bullying (网络欺凌). The app allows users within 5 miles (8 km) to create and add comments to everything. Teenagers who get negative comments on these sites can’t help but feel hurt. Opening new doors However, Armin Korsos, a student from Illinois, takes advantage of the comments he receives over social media to improve his videos on the social networking site Youtube. “Social media can help people show themselves and their talents to the world in a way that was never possible before,” Korsos said. But Korsos recognizes that social media has become a distraction “Social media, though it helps people connect with their friends and stay updated, is not all necessary.” 33. What is the article mainly about? A. The major problems with social media. B. The effect of social media on teenagers. C. How teenagers benefit from social media. D. Why social media appeals so much to teenagers. 34. How does social media change relationships, according to the article? A. It pushes people to meet their friends more often offline. B. It encourages people to pay more attention to those around them. C. It enables users to understand accurately what others are talking about online. D. It allows people to keep in touch with their friends who live far away more easily. 35. Which statement about the use of social media would Armin Korsos probably agree with? A. The use of social media taught him to turn negative comments into motivations. B. Social media can easily become an addiction (着迷), despite its benefits. C. Social media is mostly a distraction to teenagers, so it is unnecessary for it to exist. D. If used well, social media can create opportunities for teenagers to develop themselves. D After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance: curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together. Together, these deep human urges (驱策力) count for much more than ambition. Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why? Why? Why?” Fortunately curiosity and discontent don’t have to be learned. We are born with them and need only recapture them. “The great man,” said Mencius (孟子), “is he who does not lose his child’s heart.” Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires restful average. It encourages us to occupy our own little comer, to avoid foolish leaps into the dark, to be satisfied. Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake. How should you start? Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend who couldn’t arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. Now she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement. One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven’t any special ability? Most people don’t. There are only a few geniuses. You haven’t any time? That’s good, because it’s always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom’s Cabin while cooking. You’re too old? Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78. However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you’ll never be more alive than you are at this moment. 36. In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to ________. A. propose a definition B. make a comparison C. reach a conclusion D. present an argument 37. According to the author, a person with “his child’s heart” tends to ________. A. lead a simple and satisfying life B. be curious about the unknown C. follow the custom all the time D. try to avoid making mistakes 38. What can we learn from Paragraphs 6 and 7? A. Lack of talent and time is no reason for taking no action. B. Experience and special abilities are the keys to success. C. The genius can get things done easily and creatively. D. Satisfying yourself can help you become an expert. 39. What could be the best title of the passage? A. Young Minds Never Feel Contented B. Trial and Error Leads lo Success C. The Keys to Achievement D. Well Begun Is Half Done If you are a motivated person, it is easy to put your personal goals ahead of those of the people around you. It is natural and not necessarily a bad thing. However, it is crucial to learn to be a team player. Acting as a part of a team builds character, teaches empathy (共鸣), and eventually achieves goals. ____40____ Here’s why: Group Effort Is More Effective than Individual Effort. You can run a small business pretty independently, but if you ever plan on being employed or running a business that employs others, you’ll have to learn how to work with other people. ____41____ Improving Others Equals Improving Yourself. If you’re on a team your personal success helps make you a good team player. This is because most people are at least a little bit competitive, whether they admit it or not. When you do well, you set a standard that others will want to meet. By pushing yourself, you help push the people on your team. ____42____ When you see someone you’re working with do something better than you, more often than not, you’ll push yourself to meet that standard. Your Attitude Matters. You should be the kind of person who wants to be a team player. People respect the ability to work well with others more than anything. Your individual actions have an impact, but if you’re reluctant to do something to help your team, it’ll be evident and your contribution will be less appreciated. ____43____ ____44____ As much as your work is important and necessary to the success of your team, the success of your team is important and necessary to your success. A. Of course, this works both ways. B. There is a mutual (相互的)effect between personal success and team achievement. C. People with team spirit try hard to make their team the best of all. D. Having a genuine interest in your team helps you as well as those you’re working with. E. Those who show respect for others will be respected in turn. F. All of these things, in turn, contribute to your personal success. G. The most impressive achievements are accomplished by groups of people, not individuals. When Jan and Brian Dutcher moved to San Diego for Brian’s new job at San Diego State University, the neighbours smiled and introduced themselves. But there were no “bring a plate” invitations, no car pooling (拼车) for her daughters Liza,12 and Erin,15. “The families really didn’t know each other,” says Jan. “We are far from relatives. Neighbours are our family.” So Jan, an artist, decided to repeat a project she had done for Liza’s fifth-grade class. They invited each neighbour to paint his or her face on a big canvas The finished piece would become the new family photo. First, Jan painted a grid on the canvas and put it up in the garage with a table of paints nearby. Then whenever she was home, the “art room” door was up, with an open invitation for neighbours to paint. The first to stop in were kids riding by. “They thought it was cool,” says Jan, but the adults weren’t so keen. “They were afraid they would mess it up.” But as words slowly spread, they came, some using their driver’s license photos as models. Then something started to happen. They returned to see who had painted, or if they could recognize who was who. In Jan’s garage, they began to chat about schools, jobs and families, almost daily. Wendy, who lived across the street and was seriously ill, came in her wheelchair to watch the fun. Neighbours began to offer their support. This year has been different in the neighbourhood. Neighbours watch over each other’s property when they are not around. Families take turns hosting happy hours. “We’re watching over each other now just like in the painting” says Jan. 45. I think Jason Harley, a professor and an ex-millionaire, can be called a ____20____ (success) person. Many people think he must be mad by giving away money to homeless people and living in a small dorm with second-hand furniture. ____21____ to him, no one has lived a better life than he has after he decided to turn his back on his fortune. He said that with all his fortune, he felt guilty when he saw there were people who earned so little and could barely support themselves. In my mind, he’s one of the few people who really understand ____22____ real success is in life. 故填But。 故填what。 Sugar’s change made me think about balancing personal goals with kindness towards others. In Hong Kong, ____23____ I live, there are many people who try to succeed without taking those who are less fortunate into consideration. Sugar’s choice ____24____ (use) his skills to help others rather than just for himself, reminds me that success ____25____ (measure) by not only what we achieve, but also how we help society. 23. where 24. to use 25. is measured 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。 故填where。 the/one’s choice to do sth. 故填to use。 故填is measured。 A Milton Community Center Milton Community Center provides a variety of programs and activities to improve the quality of life for young adults of different ages. For Jim Thorpe, it didn’t matter what kind he wore.” 30 What do we know about Thorpe? Confident and committed 【答案】30. D 31. C 32. 根据第二段中“He grew up poor and at age 9 his twin brother passed away and a few years later he lost both of his parents. (他在贫困中长大,9岁时双胞胎兄弟去世,几年后他又失去了双亲。)”以及第三段中“Just hours before Thorpe was going to compete in the Olympics, somebody stole his shoes. (就在索普即将参加奥运会的几个小时前,有人偷走了他的鞋子。)”可知,索普童年贫困,失去双胞胎兄弟和父母,奥运比赛前还遭遇鞋子被偷,一生经历了许多艰难困苦。故选D项。 【31题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“The javelin was the only event he didn’t win, probably because he had never competed in that event before. C Social media is one of the fastest-growing industries in today’s world. C. Social media is mostly a distraction to teenagers so it is unnecessary for it to exist. D. If used well, social media can create opportunities for teenagers to develop themselves. B 34. D 35. 通读全文,尤其是第二段“The wide spread of social media has changed nearly all parts of teenagers’ lives. (社交媒体的广泛传播几乎改变了青少年生活的方方面面)”和三个小标题“Changing relationships (改变关系)”、“Wanting to be “liked” (想要被“喜欢”)”、“Opening new doors (开启新的可能性)”可知,文章主要从社会关系、心理需求、新的可能性三个方面讨论了社交媒体对青少年生活的影响。故选B项。 【34题详解】 细节理解题。根据Changing relationships下第五段中“Yet, some people believe social media has made it easier to start relationships with anyone from anywhere. (然而,一些人认为,社交媒体使人们更容易与任何地方的任何人建立关系)”可知,社交媒体让人们更容易与远方的朋友保持联系。故选D项。 【35题详解】 推理判断题。根据Opening new doors下第一段“However, Armin Korsos, a student from Illinois, takes advantage of the comments he receives over social media to improve his videos on the social networking site Youtube. (然而,来自伊利诺伊州的学生Armin Korsos利用社交媒体上收到的评论来改进他在社交网站Youtube上的视频)”和第二段““Social media can help people show themselves and their talents to the world in a way that was never possible before,” Korsos said. (Korsos说:“社交媒体可以帮助人们以一种前所未有的方式向世界展示自己和自己的才能。”)”可知,Armin Korsos利用社交媒体来改进自己的工作,觉得它可以帮助人们展示自己和自己的才能。由此推知,他会赞同“如果使用得当,社交媒体可以为青少年创造发展自我的机会”的观点。故选D项。 D After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance: curiosity and discontent. The Keys to Achievement D Well Begun Is Half Done 【答案】36. D 37. B 38. A 39. 根据第一段“After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance: curiosity and discontent.(经过多年对人性的观察,我发现有两种品质决定了有成就的人和表现平平的人的区别:好奇心和不满)”可知,第一段提出了本文的论点,可推理出作者写第一段的目的是陈述论点,故选D项。 根据第二段“Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why? Why? Why?”(像伽利略一样,历史上所有的伟人都很好奇,不满意地问道:“为什么?为什么?为什么。”)”以及下文““The great man,” said Mencius (孟子), “is he who does not lose his child’s heart.”(“伟人,”孟子说,“是不失童心的人。”)” 根据第六段“She was curious about how the experts did it. Now she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.(她很好奇专家们是怎么做到的。现在她成了其中一位专家,正在写插花方面的书。)”以及第七段“Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.(请记住,托马斯·科斯坦出版第一部小说时57岁,摩西奶奶在78岁时展示了她的第一张照片。)” 根据第一段“After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance: curiosity and discontent.(经过多年对人性的观察,我发现有两种品质决定了有成就的人和表现平平的人的区别:好奇心和不满)”、第二段“Like Galileo, all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why? Why? Why?”(像伽利略一样,历史上所有的伟人都很好奇,不满地问道:“为什么?为什么?为什么。”)”以及第七段“Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.(请记住,托马斯·科斯坦出版第一部小说时57岁,摩西奶奶在78岁时展示了她的第一张照片。)” If you are a motivated person, it is easy to put your personal goals ahead of those of the people around you. If you’re on a team, your personal success helps make you a good team player. F 41. G 42. A 43. D 44. 【40题详解】 上文“However, it is crucial to learn to be a team player. Acting as a part of a team builds character, teaches empathy(共鸣), and eventually achieves goals.(然而,学会成为团队一员是至关重要的。作为团队的一员,可以塑造性格,培养同理心,并最终实现目标。)”说明了成为团队一员的重要性,F项“所有这些,反过来,也有助于你的个人成功”和前文为顺接关系,进一步论述其好处,并引出下文介绍成为团队一员的好处。且F项中的“All of these things”指代前文提到的“builds character, teaches empathy(共鸣), and eventually achieves goals”。故选F。 【41题详解】 上文“You can run a small business pretty independently, but if you ever plan on being employed or running a business that employs others, you’ll have to learn how to work with other people.(你可以相当独立地经营一家小企业,但如果你打算受雇于人或经营一家雇佣他人的企业,你就必须学会如何与他人合作。)” 【42题详解】 上文“When you do well, you set a standard that others will want to meet. By pushing yourself, you help push the people on your team.(当你做得好时,你就为其他人树立了一个他们想要达到的标准。通过鞭策自己,你也帮助推动了团队中的人。)”说明了个人表现好对团队的影响,A项“当然,这是双向的”与前文提到的个人对团队的影响和下文提到的团队对个人的影响相呼应,并引出下文说明团队中其他人的表现对个人的影响。故选A。 【43题详解】 上文“Your individual actions have an impact, but if you’re reluctant to do something to help your team, it’ll be evident and your contribution will be less appreciated.(你的个人行为会产生影响,但如果你不愿意为团队做点什么,这会很明显,你的贡献也会不那么被欣赏。)” 【44题详解】 下文“As much as your work is important and necessary to the success of your team, the success of your team is important and necessary to your success.(尽管你的工作对团队的成功很重要也很必要,但团队的成功对你的成功也同样重要和必要。)” When Jan and Brian Dutcher moved to San Diego for Brian’s new job at San Diego State University, the neighbours smiled and introduced themselves. “We’re watching over each other now just like in the painting,” says Jan. 45. Why did the Dutchers move to San Diego? (不多于五个单词) ______________________________________________________________________________ 46. Who joined in the project first after a grid was done? (不多于三个单词) ______________________________________________________________________________ 47. Why weren’t the adults so keen at first? (不多于八个单词) ______________________________________________________________________________ 48. What do you think of Jan? (仅用一个单词) ______________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】45. For Brian’s new job. 46. Kids riding by./Kids. 47.
