Every four years, the Winter Olympics surprise us with many new incredible athletes. Here’s a look at the biggest stars from the Beijing Games.
Eileen Gu, China, freestyle skiing
Gu, 18, was undoubtedly one of the biggest stars throughout the Olympics. One of just two athletes to compete in all three freestyle skiing events, Gu brought home a gold in big air and halfpipe and a silver in slopestyle. That made her the first freeski athlete to win three medals in a single Games. She also became the youngest gold medalist in freestyle skiing and was the first woman to land a left-turn 1620.
Nils van der Poel, Sweden, speed skating
The 25-year-old Swede set two Olympic records and one world record. Van der Poel won the men’s 5, 000m and 10, 000m speed skating events, and then subsequently (随后)published a 62-page guide on how to win the events. Van der Poel nearly quit speed skating after a disappointing 2018 Olympics. He joined the Swedish army for a basic ranger course before returning to the ice in 2019. Now, he's a two-time Olympic gold medalist.
Chloe Kim, USA, snowboarding
The 21-year-old Californian won her second straight Olympic gold in the women's halfpipe, becoming the first woman to win the event in back-to-back Games.
“I worked so hard for four years to get back here and do this again, ” Kim said after the event.
The American star is now a two-time gold medalist, and at her age, she could continue for years to come if she wants to.
Nathan Chen, USA, figure skating
Chen helped the US win bronze in the team event in 2018 before an even better run in Beijing. Team USA claimed silver in the team event, and the 22-yearold Chen won gold in the men’s singles competition. That gold medal came after winning singles gold in three straight World Championships(2018, 2019, 2021).
1. Who is the youngest gold medalist in freestyle skiing?
A. Chloe Kim. B. Nils van der Poel. C. Eileen Gu. D. Nathan Chen.
2. What do we know about Nils van der Poel?
A. He is an American. B. He shared his ways to win in sports.
C. He never left ice sports. D. He did well in 2018 Olympics.
3. When did Chloe Kim win the first Olympic gold?
A. At the age of 17. B. At the age of 20.
C. At the age of 21. D. At the age of 25.

Most of us spend our lives surrounded by screens, which offer us convenience as well as connection and an ocean of information. But since it’s easy to feel pressured to keep up with every notification, technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing. Thus, the idea of “digital detox” is becoming increasingly inviting.
The phrase “digital detox” describes getting rid of TV, phones, computers and other forms of technology that control our lives for a period of time. Some experts advocate completely avoiding unnecessary screen time for 30 years. Others suggest using an app that will limit the amount of time one can spend on certain websites. A third option is logging out in evenings or on weekends. Others simply turn their phones off at scheduled times. Some even pay high prices to take vacations in places where they can unplug from their digital routine.
Why might you want to take a digital detox? Perhaps you find that you are spending longer than you intend on certain apps or that they distract you from more important things. Perhaps social media is depressing because you compare yourself to others or you fear missing out on things that other people are enjoying. Constant negative news can also give rise to a lot of stress.
Technology can also have physical effects. Many people experience back or neck pain as a result of bending over screens. The blue light coming from most screens can also affect people’s sleep by preventing production of melatonin
Giving up all screens may not be realistic, but strategic breaks from technology may be good for your body, mind, emotions and relationships. It is high time that you picked a time to turn off your devices and focus on really important things.
4. Why does the author say “technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing” in paragraph 1?
A. To confirm a concept. B. To present a problem.
C. To explain a rule. D. To make a prediction.
5. What does the underlined word “unplug” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Recover. B. Benefit. C. Escape. D. Suffer.
6. Which could be the reason for one to start “digital detox”?
A. Exposure to false news. B. Apps selection difficulty.
C. Fear of being left behind. D. Pressure from social comparison.
7. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To recommend healthy lifestyles. B. To call for reducing the use of digital devices.
C. To give instructions on starting digital detox. D. To present different attitudes to digital products.
B 5. C 6. D 7. B
根据第一段中“Most of us spend our lives surrounded by screens, which offer us convenience as well as connection and an ocean of information. But since it’s easy to feel pressured to keep up with every notification, technology may feel more like a burden than a blessing.(我们大多数人的一生都生活在屏幕的包围之中,这些屏幕为我们带来了便利、联系以及海量的信息。
根据第二段中“The phrase “digital detox” describes getting rid of TV, phones, computers and other forms of technology that control our lives for a period of time.(“数字戒瘾”这个表述指的是暂时停止使用电视、手机、电脑以及其他那些掌控我们生活的科技产品)”可知,“数字脱瘾”是指摆脱电视、电话等数字生活。
根据第三段中“Perhaps social media is depressing because you compare yourself to others or you fear missing out on things that other people are enjoying. Constant negative news can also give rise to a lot of stress.(或许社交媒体让人感到沮丧,是因为你会将自己与他人进行比较,或者你会担心自己会错过别人正在享受的精彩事物。持续不断的负面新闻也会带来大量的压力)”可知,一个人可能开始“数字脱瘾”的原因是把自己和别人比较,也就是来自社会比较的压力。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Giving up all screens may not be realistic, but strategic breaks from technology may be good for your body, mind, emotions and relationships. It is high time that you picked a time to turn off your devices and focus on really important things.(完全放弃使用电子设备或许不太现实,但有计划地暂时远离科技产品可能对你的身体、思维、情绪以及人际关系都有好处。是时候选一个时间关掉你的设备,专注于真正重要的事情了)”可知,作者认为是关掉你的设备专注于重要的事情的时候了,可以推测出文章的目的是呼吁减少使用数码设备。故选B。
C
At an animal sanctuary (保护区) in the Congo, several dozen Congolese schoolchildren are getting a course in bonobos (倭黑猩猩). These gentle animals, who look like chimpanzees (黑猩猩), are “our closest cousins”, educator Biaise Mbwaki tells the students. “They have a human character, and they are Congolese. They are smaller and gentler than chimps.”
Only about 20,000 wild bonobos are left, and they are found only in the central rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. So Mbwaki and other workers at Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary are working hard to involve Congolese students in protecting the bonobos that remain.
Bonobos share nearly 99% of their DNA with humans. And studies of the animals at Lola are helping scientists understand how humans developed characters like empathy (同情). But humans haven t shown much empathy for bonobos. We’ve hunted them for food, sold their babies as pets, and destroyed much of their natural environment.
The sanctuary’s goal is to prepare the bonobos for life in the wild. In the meantime, they serve as ambassadors (大使) to daily visits from schoolchildren. “The children learn that this animal is a treasure of nature. The children also learn to take action if they see a bonobo being kept as a pet, which is illegal in Congo,” says Claudine André, who founded Lola ya Bonobo in 1994.
But the long-term goal is to see more bonobos living in the wild. So Lola has set up a second sanctuary called Ekolo ya Bonobo hundreds of miles away. “It’s a place where bonobos used to live,” says Dr. Raphael Belais at Lola. “But unfortunately during the war hunting was widespread so there are no more bonobos in this part of the forest.”
Their future, though, will be determined by Congolese people like the students who came to Lola today.
So I asked a 10-year-old named Gaska Basili, what he learned about bonobos during the visit.
“They are like our brothers,” he replied in French.
“And what would you do if you saw a bonobo being kept illegally?” I asked.
“I would call my teacher,” he said.
8. What can we learn about bonobos?
A. They are quite dangerous.
B. They are unique to Congo.
C. They are much bigger than chimps.
D. They are quite different from humans in many ways.
9. What does Claudine André say about keeping a bonobo as a pet?
A. It is against the law in Congo.
B. It is increasingly common in Congo.
C. It is warmly welcomed by her children.
D. It is unhelpful for reducing bonobo hunting
10. What is the purpose of building Ekolo ya Bonobo?
A. To attract more tourists. B. To educate more students.
C. To raise various kinds of animals. D. To return bonobos back to nature.
11. What can we infer from Gaska Basili’s words?
A. He was uninterested in bonobos.
B. He found it hard to save bonobos.
C. His visiting the bonobos was a helpful lesson.
D. His teacher was a top bonobo professional.
B 9. A 10. D 11. C
根据第二段中“Only about 20,000 wild bonobos are left, and they are found only in the central rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.(目前仅存约2万只野生倭黑猩猩,它们只生活在刚果民主共和国的中部雨林中)”可知,倭黑猩猩只生活在刚果民主共和国的中部雨林中,是刚果特有的。
根据第四段中Claudine André的话“The children also learn to take action if they see a bonobo being kept as a pet, which is illegal in Congo(孩子们还学会了,如果看到倭黑猩猩被当作宠物饲养,他们要采取行动,因为在刚果这是违法的)”可知,Claudine André提到在刚果把倭黑猩猩当宠物养是违法的。故选A项。
根据第五段中“But the long-term goal is to see more bonobos living in the wild. So Lola has set up a second sanctuary called Ekolo ya Bonobo hundreds of miles away.(但长期目标是让更多倭黑猩猩生活在野外。所以Lola在数百英里外设立了第二个保护区,名为Ekolo ya Bonobo)”可知,建立Ekolo ya Bonobo的目的是让倭黑猩猩回归自然。故选D项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后部分“So I asked a 10 year old named Gaska Basili, what he learned about bonobos during the visit. ‘They are like our brothers,’ he replied in French. ‘And what would you do if you saw a bonobo being kept illegally?’ I asked. ‘I would call my teacher,’ he said.(于是我问一个名叫Gaska Basili的10岁男孩,他在参观中对倭黑猩猩有什么了解。“它们就像我们的兄弟,”他用法语回答。“如果你看到一只倭黑猩猩被非法饲养,你会怎么做?”我问。“我会打电话给我的老师,”他说)”可知,Gaska Basili通过参观对倭黑猩猩有了正确认识且知道如何应对非法饲养的情况,说明这次参观是有意义的一课。故选C项。
D
I cover small businesses in Charlotte, North Carolina. I write special reports, daily stories, and long-form pieces. I chose this field not only because I love to write, but also because I love storytelling. I love meeting people. I love asking questions. I’ve always been a wholehearted reader and writer, but the older I got, the more I discovered my eagerness to use my talents to tell stories.
After I graduated from college, the Charlotte Observer hired me as a reporter. As a student, I wrote for some newspapers, and I was editor-in-chief of a magazine in college. However, having published some stories did not mean I should get the job. When the Charlotte Observer was looking to hire a couple of graduates, they talked to professors in my journalism school and two of them recommended me for the job. It was the two letters of recommendation that put me at the top of the pile and made sure that the editors saw what I’d worked so hard on.
I have some advice for someone who wants to be a reporter. First, know what you’re getting into. Times have changed, and the newspaper industry is reinventing itself You have more reasons than ever to be discouraged. That’s why you often hear some newspaper insiders talking about missing the golden years — when pay raises were plentiful and editors weren’t afraid to throw money at the wall. No lie: the Charlotte Observer actually used to pay for a reporter to live on the coast for the summer. Sigh.
But if print media is all you’ve ever wanted, you should use all or most of your effort to do it. Volunteer for stories outside your field. You might have to pick up a weekend shift (轮班). If you’re working on a big story, you’ll probably have to stay late. And the editors might decide you look pretty available even when your computer is shutting down. Then, all you can do is smile, start your computer again and repeat to yourself: “This is what I love.”
12. What does the author say about her job?
A. She feels tired of it.
B. She likes it very much.
C. She earns good money from it.
D. She finds it quite easy and interesting.
13. What played a key role in helping the author join the Charlotte Observer?
A. Her great talents for telling stories.
B. Two professors’ recommendations.
C. Some stories she published as a student.
D. The work experience she got at college.
14. Why does the author sigh at the end of paragraph 3?
A. The newspaper industry has passed its golden years.
B. It is difficult to be a successful reporter now.
C. The reporter-editor relationship has changed.
D. Newspaper readers get discouraged easily.
15. What is the author’s advice for new reporters?
A. Learn to write big stories.
B. Devote yourself to your work.
C. Know more editors outside your field.
D. Learn more from experienced reporters.
B 13. B 14. A 15. B

It was the two letters of recommendation that put me at the top of the pile and made sure that the editors saw what I’d worked so hard on.(当《夏洛特观察家报》想招聘几名毕业生时,他们和我所在新闻学院的教授谈了谈,其中两位教授推荐我得到这份工作。
根据第三段中“Times have changed, and the newspaper industry is reinventing itself (以新形象示人). You have more reasons than ever to be discouraged. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The act of making and being a friend is as simple as it is difficult. We spoke with experts to help find ways to make new friends, as well as to take better care of the friendships you already have. Here are few of their opinions.
Accept the awkwardness (尴尬) and assume that other people need new friends, too
When you reach out to somebody you don’t know well — whether that’s sending the first text message or making small talk in the elevator — you often feel uncomfortable. ____16____. Otherwise you can’t have new friends.
Remember that people will like you more than you think they will
This opinion is based on science called the “liking gap”, which says that the little voice in your head telling you that somebody didn’t like you very much is wrong. ____17____. Instead, when you talk to someone else, you’re actually going to brighten their day.
Engage in activities that you love
Ask anyone about how to make friends and they will most likely tell you to try a new hobby. It might sound hollow. ____18____.
Doing things you are actually interested in will naturally draw people to you because you’ll be in the right place with the right people. ____19____, remind yourself that you love more than one thing.
____20____
The planet is warming, our news updates are constant, and there’s so much good television out there to watch. We get it. But if you want to keep your friendships alive, you have to be present for them. Listen to and notice things about your friends.
A. Be Present
B. But it works
C. So don’t listen to it
D. if it doesn’t work out
E. Treat friends with respect
F. If you want to be a cool and smart kid
G. But you have to accept that awkwardness
G 17. C 18. B 19. F 20. A
根据上文“When you reach out to somebody you don’t know well — whether that’s sending the first text message or making small talk in the elevator — you often feel uncomfortable.(当你与你不太熟悉的人联系时,无论是第一次发短信还是在电梯里聊天,你都会感到不舒服)”以及后文“Otherwise you can’t have new friends.(否则你就不能有新朋友了)”可知,后文提到不接受这种不舒服就无法获得新朋友,可知本句与上文构成转折,故G选项“但你必须接受这种尴尬”符合语境,故选G。
根据上文“This opinion is based on science called the “liking gap”, which says that the little voice in your head telling you that somebody didn’t like you very much is wrong.(这一观点基于一种叫做“喜欢差距”的科学,它说,你脑子里的小声音告诉你某人不太喜欢你是错误的)”以及后文“Instead, when you talk to someone else, you’re actually going to brighten their day.(相反,当你与其他人交谈时,你实际上会让他们的一天变得更加愉快)”可知,后文提到相反的情况,即不听从脑子里的这个声音,C选项中it对应上文the little voice。
根据上文“Ask anyone about how to make friends and they will most likely tell you to try a new hobby. It might sound hollow.(向任何人询问如何交朋友,他们很可能会告诉你尝试一种新的爱好。听起来可能很空洞)”可知,本段的建议是尝试新爱好,上文提到了很空洞,可知本句与上文构成转折,指出这一做法是可行的。故B选项“但它能起作用”符合语境,故选B。
【19题详解】
根据上文“Doing things you are actually interested in will naturally draw people to you because you’ll be in the right place with the right people.(做你真正感兴趣的事情自然会吸引人们来找你,因为你会在正确的地方和正确的人在一起)”以及后文“remind yourself that you love more than one thing.(提醒自己,你爱的不止一件事)”可知,上文提到要做自己真正感兴趣的事情,可推测本句是对这一行为进行的假设:如果你想成为一个又酷又聪明的孩子。
根据本段内容“The planet is warming, our news updates are constant, and there’s so much good television out there to watch. We get it. But if you want to keep your friendships alive, you have to be present for them. Listen to and notice things about your friends.(地球正在变暖,我们的新闻不断更新,还有那么多好的电视可以看。我们明白了。但是如果你想保持友谊,你必须为他们而存在。倾听并注意你朋友的事情)”可知,本段的主旨是强调和朋友在一起,倾听并注意你朋友的事情,A选项Be Present对应后文be present。故A选项“在场”符合语境,故选A。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
If you had to choose one word to describe Kevin, it might have been “slow”. He didn’t learn his ABCs as fast as other kids. He never came in first in the running races. However, Kevin’s smile was brighter than the sun in June; his heart bigger than the sky. Kevin’s enthusiasm for life spread quickly to others? So when he discovered that the teacher, Randy, was putting together a boys’ basketball team, his mother could only answer, “Yes, you may join.”
Basketball became the center of Kevin’s life. At practice, he worked so hard that you’d have thought he was preparing for the NBA. He liked to stand in a certain spot near the free- throw (罚球) line and shoot baskets. Patiently, he stood there throwing ball after ball after ball, until finally it would get into the basket. “Look at me, Coach!” he’d shout to Randy, jumping up and down, his face just glowing with the excitement of it all. His teammates were also moved by Kevin’s perseverance, and they insisted on practicing with him.
Kevin and his whole team truly loved basketball. But just loving the game doesn’t help you win. More balls fell out of the basket than into it, and the boys lost every game that season by very large scores, except one: the night it snowed and the other team couldn’t make it to the game. At the end of the season, the boys had their last competition. As the last-place team, they drew the unfortunate spot of playing against the first-place team—the tall, undefeated first-place team.
The game went pretty much as expected, and near the middle of the fourth quarter Kevin’s team stood nearly 30 points behind. At that point, one of Kevin’s teammates called time-out. As he came to the side, Randy couldn’t imagine why the time-out had been called. “Coach,” said the boy. “I know that Kevin has never made a basket. But this is our last game and I think we should let Kevin make a basket to achieve his dream.” With the game completely out of reach, the idea seemed reasonable, so plans were made.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Every time Kevin’s team had the ball Kevin was to stand in his special spot near the free- throw line and they would give him the ball.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Kevin missed every chance with this pattern continuing a few more times, and the spectators (观众) finally figured out what was happening.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Every time Kevin’s team had the ball, Kevin was to stand in his special spot near the free-throw line and they would give him the ball. Kevin skipped extra high as he went onto the court. His first shot bounced around but missed. The player from the other team swiped the ball and took it down to the other end scoring two more points. At that moment, a clear tension and unease appeared on his face. But quickly he adjusted his mindset and got back into the game. As soon as Kevin’s team had the ball again, they passed it to Kevin who obediently stood in his place. But he missed again.
Kevin missed every chance with this pattern continuing a few more times, and the spectators finally figured out what was happening. Little by little people started to stand up and clap their hands. The whole gymnasium thundered with the clapping, hollering, chanting, “Kevin! Kevin!” The whole world was stopped, waiting and wanting for Kevin. Finally, after an infinite amount of tries, the ball took one miraculous bounce and went in. Kevin’s arms shot high into the air and he shouted, “I won! I won!” The clock ticked off the last few seconds and the first-place team remained undefeated. But on that evening, everyone left the game truly feeling like a winner.

The American star is now a two-time gold medalist and at her age, she could continue for years to come if she wants to.

C Fear of being left behind. D. Pressure from social comparison.
7. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To recommend healthy lifestyles. B. To call for reducing the use of digital devices.
C. To give instructions on starting digital detox. D. To present different attitudes to digital products.

A Her great talents for telling stories.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Every time Kevin’s team had the ball, Kevin was to stand in his special spot near the free- throw line and they would give him the ball.

Kevin missed every chance with this pattern continuing a few more times, and the spectators (观众) finally figured out what was happening.
