I remember that it was a fall morning when the orchestra (管弦乐队) teachers came into Miss Newell’s third-grade classroom. “You have hands for the viola (中提琴),” Miss Ciano told me. I was excited because my hands were finally good for something. I told my parents I wanted to play, and naturally, they agreed.
Since I first touched the viola, I haven’t been able to put it down. Ignoring the difficulty, I am pulled closer to it each day.
Classical music is truly my best friend. It is the trusted friend of every man, woman and child. Various feelings are expressed in classical music. I discovered that when I was eleven and played a cello concerto (大提琴协奏曲) of Bach in a competition, the first movement was joyful, but the second movement was mysterious and full of pain. From the piece, I learned that music expresses not only feelings, but also sudden mood changes. By listening to classical music, I know that someone else shares these feelings. Since I am lucky enough to be able to play classical music, I am comforted by it when I am upset. It gives me a way to escape from my problems for a short period. Classical music can express my joy, sadness and anger.
Now look back at that fall day in the third grade and think how gullible I was for believing that anyone, even music teachers, could tell whether hands were perfect for a certain instrument. I’m certain they told me I had “viola hands” not because they were fortune-tellers, but because there was a lack of violists in our district. Classical music is one of the best things that ever happened to mankind. If you get introduced to it in the right way, it will become your friend for life.
4. What’s the main cause of the author’s interest in playing the viola?
A. Interesting musical classes. B. Beautiful viola sound.
C. Teachers’ proper guidance. D. Parents’ strong support.
5. According to the passage, in what way does classical music help the author?
A. By developing social skills. B. By giving emotional comfort.
C. By broadening life experience. D. By building close relationship.
6. What does the underlined word “gullible” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Easily tricked. B. Firmly loved. C. Greatly challenged. D. Secretly hidden.
7. Which could be the best title for the passage?
A. Special Event, Sweet Memory. B. Classical Music, Endless Friendship.
C. Lifetime Dream, Great effort. D. Happy Childhood, Unforgotten Experience.

Today’s Brussels sprouts (孢子甘蓝) taste better than you might remember from childhood, and that is because a new variety has replaced the original vegetable. You can thank plant breeders for the change. Modern breeders, armed with new gene-editing technology, are looking to reproduce Brussels sprouts’ reinvention.
In the late 1990s, scientists discovered specific chemicals which made Brussels sprouts taste bitter. Plant breeders started growing old seeds, previously abandoned due to poor yields (产量), to look for tastier versions with lower levels of these specific chemicals. Then they crossed these delicious but low-yield plants with high-yield individuals until they found a version that made plenty of tasty sprouts, transforming the vegetable from a bitter pill into a popular dish.
But other vegetables haven’t fared as well. That’s because most breeding decisions favor plant traits (特性) that matter to vegetable growers, not vegetable eaters. For instance, disease resistance is probably the major focus these days of most breeding programs because that prevents the farmer from growing the crop. The taste of vegetables is ignored.
People, however, are now becoming interested in prioritizing the taste of vegetables thanks in part to new genetic technology. “There’s never been a better time to be a fruit breeder or a vegetable breeder because we have more tools and techniques,” says Susan Brown, an apple breeder at Cornell University.
Some companies are beginning to use those tools to deal with the challenge of developing tastier vegetables. One company, Pairwise, is fighting the same compounds that troubled Brussels sprouts. But this time researchers are improving the flavor of salad greens.
All vegetable growers hope that more flavorful products on store shelves will convince people to consume the recommended allowances (定量) of fruits and vegetables — and do so better than decades of nutritional guidance have. “Don’t waste your time talking about trying to educate people to eat better,” said Harry Klee, a professor who specializes in tomato breeding. “Just give them products that taste better and that they want to eat.”
8. Why did plant breeders grow old Brussels sprout seeds?
A. To study why Brussels sprouts are bitter.
B. To research the specific chemicals.
C. To select high-yielding products.
D. To find the less bitter versions.
9. What does the underlined word “fared” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Survived. B. Emerged. C. Mushroomed. D. Succeeded.
10. What can we learn from Susan Brown’s words in paragraph 4?
A. The breeding techniques are booming.
B. The breeding techniques need no improvement.
C. The breeders are struggling to develop new species.
D. The breeders should develop new genetic technology.
11. How can fruits and vegetables be consumed more according to Harry Klee?
A. By enhancing the taste.
B. By improving the nutrients.
C. By making them more accessible.
D. By telling people the benefits.
D
Life is busy. We’re always expected to be productive and engaged, whether that’s with parenting, housework, or work. While taking time for small rewards can feel like a luxury (奢侈), the truth is that it is necessary for improving our mental health. A key psychological idea behind this is the Premack Principle, which explains why treating ourselves is more than a tendency; it’s a way to improve our daily lives.
In the 1960s, American psychologist David Premack developed a theory now known as Premack Principle. He explained that doing something you’re more likely to do can be a reward for doing something you don’t actually want to do. For instance, if you finish a task you’re not interested in, like cleaning the bathroom, you can treat yourself to something you like, such as watching an episode of your favorite TV show. This approach takes advantage of our natural need for fun to help us get through tasks we might not enjoy.
Recent studies keep showing that giving yourself rewards can help improve your work and happiness. For example, Woolley and Fishbach discovered that getting rewards right away can make you more motivated because it links the reward directly with the task. What’s interesting is that it’s not about how big the reward is but how quickly you get it that matters. Another study by Landry and others found it’s not the reward itself but rather how the reward makes people feel that helps them do their best. This makes sense because rewards boost our dopamine (多巴胺) levels, which plays a key role in how our brains feel pleasure.
The idea of giving ourselves “little treats” is not just about enjoying something; it’s proof of how positive reinforcement can change our behavior and make us feel better mentally. By carefully using the Premack Principle and rewarding ourselves, we can find more motivation (动机) to face challenges and lead a happier life. It’s okay torecognize and celebrate our efforts, big or small.
So, go ahead, give yourself that little treat. You’ve earned it.
12. What is the Premack Principle?
A. A tool to work out a long-term plan.
B. Away to complete tasks effectively.
C. A means to make boring tasks enjoyable.
D. A theory to explain how rewards improve happiness.
13. According to Woolley and Fishbach, what helps to improve motivation?
A. The type of tasks. B. The immediate reward.
C. The size of the reward. D. The level of dopamine.
14. What might be a “positive reinforcement” according to paragraph 4?
A. A cleanup. B. Physical training.
C. Graduation ceremony. D. A favourite snack.
15. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Importance of Productivity B. Motivation and Mental Health
C. The Premack Principle for Life D. Dopamine and the Brain’s Pleasure

Theresa had always looked forward to the first day of school, but this year was different. Due to her father’s recent job change, she and her family had moved across the country to a new town and a new neighborhood.
She didn’t even want to get out of bed. Getting up meant going to school. She didn’t know a soul. She had no friends here. Who would she talk to? Who would she hang out with? This would not be a good day, she thought to herself.
After a quick breakfast, she grabbed her things and headed down the street to the corner where the bus would pick her up.
In the distance, she could see two girls laughing about something. As Theresa got closer, the girls shot a brief look at her way and then continued on with their conversation. Finally the bus arrived. Theresa stepped on and sat alone. The ride seemed rather long until the bus pulled up in front of the school.
Theresa climbed off the bus with no idea where to go. The school was much bigger than her old one. She had made it through the whole morning. But now it’s lunch time, and she was keenly aware of the fact that she had no one to sit and dine with.
She found a place alone in the corner and sat down with lunch. Just as she started to eat, she saw two girls approaching. They were the girls from the bus stop.
“Do you mind if we join you?” said the one in front.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Mind? Please sit with me!” Theresa thought and quickly replied,“not at all.”

【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者一个偶然的机会开始拉中提琴,感受到古典音乐对我们的情感带来的好处,并把它看作一生最诚挚的朋友的故事。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段““You have hands for the viola (中提琴),” Miss Ciano told me. I was excited because my hands were finally good for something.(“你的手很适合拉中提琴,”齐亚诺小姐对我说。我很兴奋,因为我的手终于有用武之地了)”可知,作者对演奏中提琴感兴趣的主要原因是教师的正确引导。故选C项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“By listening to classical music, I know that someone else shares these feelings. Since I am lucky enough to be able to play classical music, I am comforted by it when I am upset.(通过听古典音乐,我知道其他人也有同样的感受。因为我很幸运能够演奏古典音乐,所以当我心烦意乱的时候,我就会得到安慰)”可知,古典音乐可以给予作者情感上的安慰。故选B项。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“for believing that anyone, even music teachers, could tell whether hands were perfect for a certain instrument. I’m certain they told me I had “viola hands” not because they were fortune-tellers, but because there was a lack of violists in our district(因为相信任何人,甚至是音乐老师,都能分辨出某人的手是否适合弹奏某种乐器。 故选A项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第三段“Classical music is truly my best friend.(古典音乐是我最好的朋友)”和文章最后一句“If you get introduced to it in the right way, it will become your friend for life.(如果你以正确的方式了解它,它将成为你终生的朋友)”可知,本文主要讲述了作者一个偶然的机会开始拉中提琴,从此古典音乐成了作者最好的朋友。因此B选项“古典音乐,永恒的友谊”适合可以用作文章标题。故选B项。
C
【答案】8. D 9. D 10. A 11. A

Plant breeders started growing old seeds, previously abandoned due to poor yields (产量), to look for tastier versions with lower levels of these specific chemicals.(在20世纪90年代末,科学家们发现了使孢子甘蓝尝起来苦的特殊化学物质。
根据划线词下文“That’s because most breeding decisions favor plant traits (特性) that matter to vegetable growers, not vegetable eaters.(这是因为大多数育种决定都倾向于对蔬菜种植者重要的植物特性,而不是对吃蔬菜的人)”可知,此处提到了其他蔬菜不太好即不太“成功”的原因,所以划线词是“成功”的意思。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段““There’s never been a better time to be a fruit breeder or a vegetable breeder because we have more tools and techniques, ” says Susan Brown, an apple breeder at Cornell University.(“现在是水果育种或蔬菜育种的最佳时机,因为我们有更多的工具和技术,”康奈尔大学的苹果育种专家苏珊•布朗表示)”可推知,育种技术正在蓬勃发展。故选A项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段““Don’t waste your time talking about trying to educate people to eat better, ”said Harry Klee, a professor who specializes in tomato breeding. “Just give them products that taste better and that they want to eat.”(“不要浪费时间谈论如何教育人们吃得更好,”专门研究番茄育种的教授哈里·克利说。“只要给他们提供味道更好、他们想吃的产品就行了。”)”可知,根据Harry Klee的说法,让人们多吃水果和蔬菜的最好方法是提高蔬菜和水果的味道。故选A项。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

For Theresa, the ride home was quite a bit different from the bus trip that morning.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
“Mind? Please sit with me!” Theresa thought and quickly replied, “not at all.” “This is usually where we sit for lunch, and since we saw you at the bus stop this morning, it must be fate or something,” said the other girl. “Maybe we’re supposed to be friends.” Theresa also expressed her willingness to be their friends. And with that, new friendships were formed. Through the whole lunch they chatted about their classes and giggling about various stories. The three girls agreed to head home together at the end of the day as they parted for the afternoon class.
For Theresa, the ride home was quite a bit different from the bus trip that morning. She now had people to sit with and new friends to talk to. She was not alone any more. The time went by much more quickly than the ride to school in that morning. The girls talked and laughed the entire way back to their neighborhood. They got off the bus and began the walk to their own houses. One by one, they said their goodbyes and exchanged quick hugs followed by a “See you tomorrow.”
