Download the Philly Food Rescue app to get started. What’s the service opportunity? PFR is the sustainability, food recovery, and donations arm of Share Food Program. You’ll use your own car (or bike) to rescue leftover food from a grocery store, restaurant, or farmers’ market, delivering it to the matched nonprofit takers. Those include senior centers, shelters, schools, and more. You can claim a one-time or weekly food rescue. What difference does food rescue make? PFR works to increase access to fresh food for our neighbors. Our team recovers half a million pounds of food every month thanks to volunteers like you. We resource more than 283 partners across Philadelphia, its suburbs, and South Jersey, impacting food security and sustainability every day of the week. What’s required? ● If driving, a driver’s license and insurance are needed. For smaller food rescues, a bike may do. ● Food rescue volunteers should be able to lift at least 30 pounds. ● Clear the trunk and back seat to make space for boxes or bags of food. ● Complete the food rescue within its scheduled window. Additional information: ● PFR matches donations within five miles to keep food local, honor volunteers’ time, and ensure food safety. ● You’re welcome to bring a friend or child as a passenger to help with loading, unloading, and delivery. ● Questions? Ask Britt at bkorn@sharefoodprogram.org or (215)301-3734. 21.What does the author intend to do? A.To call on people to help. B.To inform people of food rescue. C.To introduce ways of volunteering. These incredible locations are similar to those in science fictions, catching our imagination and transporting us to otherworldly grounds. Cappadocia, Turkey Located in central Anatolia, the area is known for its unusual rock formations known as “fairy chimneys.” These columns, created by volcanoes and erosion (腐蚀) over millions of years, give the region its otherworldly appearance. Tsingy de Bemaraha The remarkable sight attracts visitors with its unique limestone (石灰石) formations. Stretching over 1,500-square kilometers, Tsingy, which means “where one cannot walk barefoot,” contains sharp surfaces and underground caves, forming a dramatic landscape. Adventurers can explore the park via bridges and ladders to witness the breathtaking beauty of this natural wonder. Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park Located in China’s Gansu province, Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park contains landforms that are one of nature’s masterpieces. Its vivid, rainbow-colored rock formations have been shaped by wind and water erosion over millions of years. The layers of red, orange and yellow create a landscape that looks as if it were on a different planet altogether. Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula Located within the remarkable landscapes of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, the cenotes (洞井) present a place of otherworldly beauty. These natural sinkholes, created by the collapse of their limestone base, open up into charming underground caves and shining pools. Rays of sunlight dance through the openings in the walls, lighting up the waters below, telling a tale of nature’s artistry. The hives help tackle Colony Collapse Disorder, a phenomenon affecting honeybee populations in North America. By collaborating with local beekeepers, the hotel supports environmental health and community engagement. Bird’s-eye View of Vancouver, Canada The 400,000 local plants and grasses on the living roof at the Vancouver Convention Centre attract bees, butterflies, and birds like Canada geese, bald eagles, and owls. An irrigation (灌溉) system using recycled wastewater sustains the plants, while four beehives aid pollination and provide honey for the building’s kitchen. Top-floor Forest School in the UK The Reading International Solidarity Centre (RISC) in Berkshire transformed its roof into a forest in 2002. These eco-friendly features not only enhance urban landscapes but also address critical environmental issues. From reducing energy costs to creating habitats for pollinators (授粉昆虫), green roofs are a powerful tool for sustainable urban development. Green Roof at WWF Headquarters The WWF headquarters in Washington D.C. features a 23,000㎡ green roof with 53,000 plants, reducing stormwater runoff by 3 million liters annually-equivalent to an Olympic pool.
