Rabbits are quiet but they run quickly. Besides, they can have many babies quickly, so Chinese people also see the rabbit as a symbol of good luck, thinking that having many children would bring happiness. Rabbits are famous in Western stories too! In Alice in Wonderland, Alice follows a rabbit and goes on an amazing adventure. In Western countries, rabbits are also seen as lucky animals. Some people believe that carrying a rabbit’s foot brings good luck. In the past, if young hunters caught a rabbit, they were given the rabbit’s back foot as a reward. In places like North America and the UK, some priests (牧师) say the word “rabbit” on the first day of each month to bring good luck. As we celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, let’s enjoy these stories and share the good luck that rabbits bring! 1. Who raises a rabbit as a pet according to the text? A. Chang’e. B. Alice. C. Hunters. The Spring Festival is one of the most important festivals both in China and around the world. What do you usually do on this festival? Clean up the rooms, hang red lanterns (灯笼) or watch the Spring Festival Gala (春晚)? All of them are traditions during the Spring Festival. But there is another key part to the celebrations: putting up the red Spring Festival couplets! Couplets, also named duilian, are a special form of literature (文学) in China. They came from taofu in the Zhou Dynasty and people put up couplets on the door to keep away from evil spirits (辟邪). Every Spring Festival, whether (无论) in cities or villages, rich or poor, every family will carefully choose a pair of red couplets and put it up. Here are a few rules for the couplets. They have two lines. The first line is on the right, and the second line is on the left. Each line must have the same number of words. The second line is similar to the first line in both grammar and artistic conception (构思). Finally, a short phrase called crossing (横批) is also needed to make up the couplets. The words on the couplets are always simple but meaningful, which show people’s good wishes. Nowadays, more and more foreigners begin to celebrate the Spring Festival. Let’s take a look at two English couplets with Chinese characteristics (特色). 1. What Spring Festival tradition is NOT mentioned (提及) in the passage? A. Hanging red lanterns. B. Buying new clothes. C. The words on the couplets will come true the next year. 4. What is the best title for this passage? A. Making the Old New B. The Wonderful Chinese Spring Festival C. English Couplets Win Hearts D. The Spring Festival Tradition: Putting Up Couplets D The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on August 15 of the lunar calendar. It is a very important festival in China. It takes its name from the fact that we always celebrate it in the middle of the autumn season. The day is also known as the Moon Festival, because at that time of the year the moon is so round and bright. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional festival. The ancient Chinese discovered that the movement of the moon had something to do with the changes of the seasons and agricultural production So, to show their thanks to the moon and celebrate the harvest (丰收), they have given some delicious things to the moon on autumn days since the Zhou Dynasty. By the time of the Northern Song Dynasty, the Mid-Autumn Festival had already become a widely celebrated folk festival. In the story, the festival is to remember a beautiful lady named Chang’e. She flew to the moon. On that day, family members get together to give some delicious things to the moon, thank the bright full moon, eat mooncakes and show strong wishes to family members and friends who live far away. Mooncakes are the special food of the Mid-Autumn Festival. On that day, people give mooncakes to the moon and eat them for celebration. Mooncakes come in different tastes in different areas. Mooncakes are round, and the word round sounds “yuan (圆)” in Chinese. So it means the reunion of a family. Now, people give mooncakes to families and friends to show that they wish them a long and happy life. 1. From Paragraph 1, what can’t we know about the Mid-Autumn Festival? A. The time. B. The food. This year’s gala was a happy celebration with traditional “Si Si Ru Yi, Sheng Sheng Bu Xi”. In old Chinese time, there were 12 parts in a day, and each part was two hours. The time from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. was called “Si Shi”. “Si” means the sixth part of the day. At this time, everything seems to be full of life. The gala uses this theme to wish every family and our country wealthy. “Sheng Sheng Bu Xi” means life goes on without the end, showing China’s endless energy and bright future. The main sign is special and meaningful. It comes from the traditional Chinese design and uses the Oracle Bone Script (甲骨文) “Si”. There are two “Si” in the sign. The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of them. This traditional festival offers people great chances to learn about rabbits. In Chinese stories, people connect the rabbit to the moon. Long ago, people believed (相信) a rabbit lived on the moon, called the Moon Rabbit. It is said to be the pet of the moon goddess, Chang’e. A. Chang’e. B. Alice. C. Hunters. D. Priests. 2. What is the structure of this text? A. ① / ② / ③ / ④ B. ①② / ③ / ④ C. ① / ②③ / ④ D. ①②③ / ④ 3. What would be the best title? A. Rabbits in Western Countries B. Different Festivals of Rabbits C. Rabbits and Festivals D. The Story of Chinese Rabbits 根据“Long ago, people believed (相信) a rabbit lived on the moon, called the Moon Rabbit. It is said to be the pet of the moon goddess, Chang’e.” C The UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) added the “Spring Festival” to the list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity (人类非物质文化遗产名录) on December 4, 2024. C. Watching the Spring Festival Gala. D. Putting up the couplets. 2. According to the passage, which is the best for ▲ in the second couplet? A. Great Hope for the Future B. Good Luck for the Road to Go C. Wish You a Rich and Lucky Year D. Summer Flowers in the Garden to Grow 3. What can we infer from the passage? A. People in the Zhou Dynasty put up couplets to keep away from evil spirits. B. Only rich men in cities will choose and put up couplets. C. A trader with kids will probably choose the first couplet. D. The words on the couplets will come true the next year. 4. What is the best title for this passage? A. Making the Old New B. The Wonderful Chinese Spring Festival C. English Couplets Win Hearts D. The Spring Festival Tradition: Putting Up Couplets 根据第二段中的“Clean up the rooms...the red Spring Festival couplets!” 根据春联的特点可知,横批为“Happy New Year”,上联为“Best Wishes for the Year to Come”,下联应与之相匹配,表达对未来一年的美好祝愿。选项中,“Good Luck for the Road to Go”与上联较为匹配。 3. 根据第三段“Couplets, also named duilian...every family will carefully choose a pair of red couplets and put it up.” D The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on August 15 of the lunar calendar.
