The poem then tells us that the rain falls throughout the night, but it’s so soft that it hardly wets the flowers.

Mars is red. It is the closest planet to the Earth. Of all the planets, it is the most similar (相似的) to the Earth, so scientists are very interested in studying it. For example, like the Earth, Mars has different temperatures and weather, but other planets have the same temperatures all year round. Here is some information about Mars.
Mars’ diameter (直径) is about 6,779 km, and that is about half of the Earth’s diameter. Mars has a very thin atmosphere (大气层) made up mostly of CO₂, with a few other gases. Mars also has big valleys (峡谷), like the very famous Valles Marineris, which is as big as the Grand Canyon.
Was there life on Mars? To answer it, scientists need to know if Mars ever had water. In 2004, people sent Spirit and Opportunity to Mars to look for the support. It can work over rocks and all kinds of ground. It can also use cameras and send photos back to the Earth. First, it found chemicals and patterns (图案) in the rocks. They were probably made by water. Then, it moved to another area and found some other rocks. They might be created (创造) by water. Now scientists think there was probably water on Mars long ago.
Today they are still not sure if there was life on Mars. The information from Spirit and Opportunity answered some old questions, but it also brings people many new ones.
9. Why are scientists interested in studying Mars?
A. Because there was water on Mars.
B. Because it’s the nearest plant to our Earth.
C. Because scientists have known much about Mars.
D. Because the temperatures and weather are changing like the Earth.
10 Spirit and Opportunity has been sent to look for ________.
A. CO₂ B. valleys C. water D. life
11. What can we learn from the passage?
A. All planets have the same temperatures and weather.
B. The Earth’s diameter is about twice longer than Mars’.
C Scientists think there might be life on Mars long ago.
D. Spirit and Opportunity only answered some old questions.
12. You can read the passage above in a ________.
A. story book B. sports newspaper C. travel guide D. science magazine

Food safety is really important, and it’s not just something we worry about at home. The fridge is a great place to keep food safe and fresh, but it’s not like a magic box that can hold any kind of food. We need to learn how to put food in the fridge in the right way.
The temperature in the fridge is different from shelf to shelf. Usually, the higher the shelf is, the higher the temperature will be. So make use of these different temperatures to get the best out of your food by storing it on the right shelf. Try to put vegetables and fruit on top shelves. The middle shelves are for food like burgers, pizza or cream cakes and the bottom shelves are for dairy products (乳制品) such as cheese, butter, yogurt and eggs. Below is a freezer (冷冻室). It is the coldest part of the fridge, so it is perfect for storing raw food like meat and seafood.
Keeping food in the fri dge does not kill bacteria (细菌) but it can stop the bacteria from growing fast. Bacteria can grow quickly in temperatures between 5℃and 60℃. This is called the Temperature Danger Zone. If you want to get the most out of your food, the temperature in your fridge needs to be between 0℃ and 5℃. The freezer temperature should be below -18℃.
Everyone should pay attention to food safety. Hope these tips can help you keep your food fresh for as long as possible.
13. What food is put in the right place?
① Apples—the top shelf ② Eggs—the middle shelf ③ Seafood—the bottom shelf ④ Beef—the freezer
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ①④ D. ③④
14. What do we know about the Temperature Danger Zone?
A. Bacteria grow fast there. B. Food can’t be put in this zone.
C. It is harmful to vegetables and fruit. D. Its temperature is between 0℃ and 5℃.
15. What does the underlined word “raw” mean?
A. Smelly. B. Uncooked. C. Expensive. D. Mouthwatering.
16. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To ask people to put food in the fridge. B. To introduce a useful tool to keep food.
C. To share some advice on using the fridge. D. To show the importance of food safety at home.

The next important date in the history of photography was in 1837. That year, Daguerre, another Frenchman, took a picture of his reading room. He used a new kind of camera in a different way. In his picture you could see everything very clearly, even the smallest thing. This kind of photo, was called a Daguerreotype.
Soon, other people began to use Daguerre’s way. Travelers brought back wonderful photos from all around the world. People took picture of famous buildings, cities and mountains.
In about 1840, photography was developed. Then photographers could take pictures of people and moving things. That was not simple. The photographers had to carry a lot of films and other machines. But this did not stop them. For example, some in the United States worked so hard.
Mathew Brady was a famous American photographer. He took many pictures of great people. The pictures were unusual because they were very lively.
