Listening to music can be a very inspiring and moving experience. One of the instruments that cause these emotions is the violin.
The Joachim-Ma Stradivarius violin that was made in 1714 by the famous violin maker Antonio Stradivari was one of the best violins the music world has ever heard. Owned by Boston’s New England Conservatory, it was auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York to raise funds for music scholarships. It sold for $11.3 million.
The violin gets its name because it was owned by the 19th-century Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim and then by Chinese violin virtuoso Si-Hon Ma who left the violin to the New England Conservatory in 2009.
The violin was made from maple and spruce woods with a deep red paint during the peak period of Stradivari’s career. Born in 1644 in Cremona, Italy, he began producing instruments when he was 22. He made cellos and violas along with violins but it is the quality of his violins that made Stradivari famous.
This violin is so extraordinary that music was composed specifically for it. Brahms wrote the Violin Concerto specifically for this violin, and it was first played with this violin in the mid-1800s.
“Now we really have the chance to have it benefit so many more students — generations of students to come,” Andrea Kalyn, president of the New England Conservatory, said in the statement from Sotheby’s. “It’s really about what’s the most powerful use of the instrument.”
The reaction of students is very positive. “I can’t believe they are doing that to get more scholarships for us,” New England Conservatory jazz vocalist student Aviana Gedler told CBS Boston. “I was really fortunate to receive a good scholarship from the school.”
While selling the splendid violin was a difficult choice, now the income will support students who will inspire countless others with their beautiful music.
24. What is the purpose of the sale of the Joachim-Ma Stradivarius violin?
A. To organize a big concert. B. To find its best new owner.
C. To promote the music career. D. To honor the maker of the violin.
25. What is Stradivari famous for?
A. The excellent sound of the violins he made.
B. The beautiful designs on the violins he made.
C. The price of the instruments he made.
D. The recyclable materials for the instruments he made.
26. What do we know about the Violin Concerto?
A. It was the best violin music. B. It was created exactly for an item.
C. It was played to raise money. D. It was performed by a Chinese artist.
27. How does Aviana Gedler feel concerning selling the violin?
A. Disappointed. B. Curious. C. Strange. D. Grateful.

Philadelphia, sometimes also called Philly, is a big city on the Delaware River in the southeaster state of Pennsylvania. It has about 1.5 million people.
William Penn, an Englishman, erected Pennsylvania in the 1680s. He also designed the city. Penn chose the name Philadelphia — a term meaning “city of brotherly love” in Greek.
Philadelphia is famous for holding an important place in American history. It served as the nation’s capital from 1785 to 1790. Earlier, it was the capital of the American colonies (殖民地) during most of the Revolutionary War against Britain. Philadelphia became the central meeting place for the “Founding Fathers” who created the United States government. The buildings where they worked can be seen today in an area called the Old City, or Independence National Historical Park. The main building is Independence Hall. That was where colonial leaders declared independence and later debated the creation of a government.
The National Park Service says more than 2.6 million people visited Independence National Historical Park last year. Close to the park is the National Liberty Museum. It holds a collection of more than ninety paintings and sculptures. Several blocks away lies the National Constitution (宪法) Center. This privately operated nonprofit museum opened its doors in Philadelphia on July 4, 2003. It was created to increase public recognition of the Constitution, its history, and its importance today.
Rich with tradition, Philadelphia offers plenty to visitors who are less concerned about history and more concerned about their stomachs. There are many food choices for hungry visitors. Reading Terminal Market, for example, is one of the nation’s largest public markets. At Reading Terminal Market, visitors can find all kinds of foods — including, of course, Philly cheesesteak. The city is known for these sandwiches. They are made of thin pieces of meat covered with cheese. A cheesesteak is offered with onions and other toppings and served on a long roll.
28. What does the underlined word “erected” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Explored. B. Attacked. C. Founded. D. Recommended.
29. What does the author intend to tell us about Philadelphia in paragraph 3?
A. Its local cultural traditions. B. Its unique architectural style.
C. Its popular tourist activities. D. Its vital historical position.
30. What do we know about the National Constitution Center?
A. It focuses on citizen constitutional education.
B. It attracts many tourists every year.
C. It has a large collection of artworks.
D. It is privately run and requires a fee to visit.
31. How does Philadelphia attract visitors who care little about history?

The number of monarch butterflies spending the winter in the western United States has dropped to its second-Lowest mark in nearly 30 years. The causes for this include the use of chemicals to kill insects, known as pesticides. Experts also blame reductions in habitat and climate change.
The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation has been counting western overwinter populations in California and Arizona for the last 28 years. The highest number recorded was 1.2 million in 1997. It counted just 9,119 monarchs in 2024, a decrease of 96 percent from 233,394 in 2023. The total was the second lowest since the survey began in 1997. The record-low count was 1,901 monarchs in 2020.
Heat might have hurt western monarchs. Monarchs across North America face increasing threats. One is the supply of a plant milkweed, which they feed on as caterpillars (毛毛虫). Monarch Joint Venture is a nonprofit group based in Minnesota that aims to protect monarchs. The group said milkweed has been disappearing because of dry weather, wildfires, agriculture and urban development. The Xerces Society said pesticides might be on the remaining plants.
Emma Pelton, a biologist with the Xerces Society, said that it is too early to tell what long-term effect the sharp drop might have on the overall western monarch population. Insects can reproduce very quickly, Pelton said. After a low point of 1,901 monarchs in 2020, the population recovered to 247,246 the following year, an increase of nearly 13,000 percent. The year after that the survey recorded 335,479 monarchs.
“This is bad news,” Pelton says of the 2024 population drop. “But we have seen incredible recovery. This doesn’t mean we’re not going to have western monarchs.”
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced in December 2024 that it wanted to list monarchs as threatened. Such a move would ban people from killing or transporting them. The proposed change would also ban property owners from making changes to their property that would make it unusable to the butterflies. For example, removing all milkweed from a property would be banned by law.
32. Which year had the lowest number of monarch butterflies?
A. 1997. B. 2020. C. 2023. D. 2024.
33. What does Pelton think of the drop of monarch population?
A. It is bad but not hopeless. B. It is sudden but beneficial.
C. It is normal and interesting. D. It is uncertain and needs studying.
34. Which of the following would be illegal under the proposed law?
A. Building a new fence around the house. B. Tracking the movements of monarchs.
C. Starting a vegetable garden in the front yard. D. Clearing all the milkweed on one’s land.
35. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Monarch Butterfly Color Becomes Less Bright
B. Monarch Butterflies Are in Great Need of Legal Protection

What is the healthiest way to prepare vegetables?
Carlene Thomas is a dietitian, a person who gives advice about healthy foods to eat. When it comes to eating healthy vegetables, Thomas says there are two kinds of people who ask her for advice. The first kind wants to know how different cooking methods affect the nutrition in vegetables. ____36____ Thomas’ simple answer to both groups is this: The best vegetables are the ones you actually want to eat.
Many people buy vegetables that they think they will eat. Maybe the produce is popular or someone is bringing attention to it on social media. ____37____ That means the vegetable gets thrown away after it goes bad. In that case, Thomas said, “It doesn’t matter how you cook them, because they’re not in your body, but in the rubbish.”
However, Thomas said research shows cooking methods do affect nutrition. Are raw vegetables healthier than cooked? Not always. When vegetables are cooked with high heat for a long period of time, many nutrients break down. However, cooking softens the cell walls in vegetables, making them easier for the body to digest. ____38____ For example, cooked tomatoes release more of the antioxidant lycopene than raw tomatoes. Lycopene is believed to have qualities that prevent cancer.
____39____ Cooking over boiling water, or steaming, and in a microwave are considered the most nutritious methods. These two methods use little time and require no fat. Another healthy method is blanching (焯) . This is when you boil vegetables in water. ____40____ Boiling vegetables runs the risk of losing water-soluble nutrients. However, you could save the water from boiled vegetables and use it for other purposes, such as soups, or just drink it.
A. But don’t boil them for too long.
B. But then they end up not using it.
C. This is the body’s ability to use vegetable nutrients.
D. Cooked food is often more nutritious than raw food.
E. Cooking methods include steaming, roasting, boiling, or frying.

Photographs capture moments in your life from a childhood birthday party to your wedding and the birth of your first child, as well as everything in-between. These pictures help you remember both wonderful moments and everyday life. It’s no wonder that they are treasured.
While Taylor Schenker’s home weathered (平安度过) Hurricane Helene in September 2024, her friend’s home in Asheville was destroyed by the flooding of the Swannanoa River. Schenker and her friend walked—the roads were blocked—to check the condition of the home.
“We spent about four hours digging through the mud, looking for any belongings of hers we could find, because her house just doesn’t exist anymore,” Schenker said, “And during that process, I found five individual photographs and I laid out the photos along with some clothes along the bank, hoping they would be reunited with their owner.”
These photos filled her mind and kept her up at night. She went back the next day and found more photos from many families. “It was a photo of a middle school basketball team. It was a photo of a beloved dog. I found a wedding photo of a bride hugging somebody,” she said. “You take photos because you have a moment you want to remember. So losing your photographs in hurricane is miserable.”
Once she realized it was her desire and mission to reunite the images with their owners she started the Photos from Helene page online as a virtual Lost and Found and hoped that through the page and word of mouth, the photos could be reunited with their owners. So the following days, she devoted herself to finding more missing photos.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Devin Olson has organized a “bike bus” for his neighborhood. They drop off students at two primary schools. So far, Olson has led 11 “bike buses”. “We meet at 8:00 am to play football and eat snacks,” Olson said. “Then the last thing, we review safety rules and start our ride. We are very happy.” The group makes eight stops along the way to pick up children. Most of the children’s parents will go together with them. “Bike buses” are also popular in other countries, like Spain and Canada.
D The recyclable materials for the instruments he made.

A. By teaching traditional food cooking skills.
B. By introducing all kinds of delicious food.
C. By organizing various music festivals.
D. By promoting local fashion shows.

One is the supply of a plant, milkweed, which they feed on as caterpillars (毛毛虫).

C. Monarch Butterfly Number Is Near 30-Year Low
D. Many Factors Affect Survival of Monarch Butterflies

Insects can reproduce very quickly, Pelton said. After a low point of 1,901 monarchs in 2020, the population recovered to 247,246 the following year, an increase of nearly 13,000 percent. The year after that the survey recorded 335,479 monarchs.( 埃玛·佩尔顿是“西里斯协会”的一名生物学家,她表示目前还无法确定这种急剧下降会对整个西部帝王蝶种群的长期发展产生何种影响。 故选A。

F. The shorter the cooking time, the more nutrients are kept in the food.
G. And the other kind of person wants to know how to eat more vegetables.
【答案】36. G 37. B 38. D 39. F 40. A
根据上文“Many people buy vegetables that they think they will eat. Maybe the produce is popular or someone is bringing attention to it on social media.(许多人会购买那些他们认为自己会食用的蔬菜。也许这些蔬菜很受欢迎,或者有人在社交媒体上对其进行了宣传推广)”以及后文“That means the vegetable gets thrown away after it goes bad. In that case, Thomas said, “It doesn’t matter how you cook them, because they’re not in your body, but in the rubbish.”(这意味着蔬菜一旦变质就会被丢弃。在这种情况下,托马斯说:“不管你是怎么烹饪它们的,因为它们不是进入你的身体,而是进了垃圾桶。”)”可知,本句与上文构成转折,指出上文做法的缺点。故B选项“但那样的话他们就无法利用这些营养物质了”符合语境。故选B。
【38题详解】
根据后文“For example, cooked tomatoes release more of the antioxidant lycopene than raw tomatoes. Lycopene is believed to have qualities that prevent cancer.(例如,煮熟的西红柿比生西红柿含有更多的抗氧化剂——番茄红素。人们认为番茄红素具有预防癌症的特性)”可知,后文煮熟的西红柿比生西红柿含有更多的抗氧化剂,说明了煮过的食物比生食的好处。故D选项“烹饪过的食物往往比生食更有营养”符合语境。故选D。
【39题详解】
根据后文“Cooking over boiling water, or steaming, and in a microwave are considered the most nutritious methods.(在沸水中烹饪、蒸制以及用微波炉加热,都被认为是营养价值最高的烹饪方法)”可知,本段主要说明了烹饪方法对食物营养成分的影响。故F选项“烹饪时间越短,食物中的营养成分就越能得以保留”符合语境。故选F。
【40题详解】
根据后文“Boiling vegetables runs the risk of losing water-soluble nutrients. However, you could save the water from boiled vegetables and use it for other purposes, such as soups, or just drink it.(煮蔬菜时可能会导致水溶性营养成分流失。不过,你可以将煮蔬菜后的水收集起来,用于其他用途,比如做汤,或者直接饮用)”可知,后文提到煮蔬菜会导致营养成分流失,推测本句是在说明烹饪的注意事项。故A选项“但不要煮得太久”符合语境。故选A。

Once she realized it was her desire and mission to reunite the images with their owners, she started the Photos from Helene page online as a virtual Lost and Found and hoped that through the page and word of mouth, the photos could be reunited with their owners. So the following days, she devoted herself to finding more missing photos.

【答案】 Recently, a terrible fire hit Schenker’s area. The fire spread rapidly, leaving destruction in its wake. As the smoke cleared, Schenker knew she had to act. She immediately rushed to the affected neighborhoods, thinking about all the precious family photos that might be lost. Just like after Hurricane Helene, she searched through the ashes, hoping to find any photos that could be salvaged. This time, she found even more pictures, some charred but still recognizable. The thought of the owners’ heartbreak if they couldn’t retrieve these memories spurred her on.
Schenker decided to hold a photo matching event in a nearby park. She spread the word through local media, online platforms, and community groups. On the day of the event, people gathered with a glimmer of hope in their eyes. Schenker carefully laid out the photos she had collected. One by one, some people recognized their long-lost pictures. There were tears of joy and gratitude as they reclaimed memories of birthdays, graduations, and family gatherings. The event was a huge success, and Schenker realized that her mission was making a real difference.
