This is a story of kindness that my friend Gunter did and it returned to him in a way that changed his life. Gunter used to teach at a university with a master’s degree. In my country, for career advancement, it is better to have a PhD. Gunter used to go to the professor in charge of scholarships and ask him for scholarships, but the professor would tell him that they had none to give him.
One day, Gunter was driving back from the university and on the side of the road he saw that the professor got into an accident with another car. Gunter went down to see if he could help the professor. The professor was warning the guy who he got into an accident with, that if the guy didn’t compensate (赔偿) him for the accident, then the professor was going to call the police. Not a nice thing at all from the professor. Gunter went and talked to the guy and the guy told him that he didn’t have money to pay the professor. Gunter went to the professor and paid him the amount, not telling the professor that he was the one who paid it. Gunter didn’t have any money left when he got home that day. The situation was resolved and everyone went home.
The next day, the professor called Gunter to his office and told him that there was a scholarship with a deadline that same day that he should apply for. Gunter did and ended up going to one of the best universities in Sweden. To this day, Gunter never revealed to the professor that he was the one who paid for the accident. I love how my friend did this act anonymously (不留名地) and I am so grateful that the universe rewarded him in a way that changed his life.

C. To enhance his career prospects. D. To obtain a good academic reputation.
5. What did Gunter do after he saw the accident?
A. He reminded the guy once more. B. He paid for the guy silently.

A. Gunter eventually realized his dream. B. Gunter failed to get the scholarship in the end.
C. The professor flied to Sweden for vacation. D. The professor gave the money back afterwards
7. Which of the following best describes Gunter?
A. Tricky and intelligent. B. Rude and selfish. C. Strict and hardworking. D. Caring and ambitious

At the top of a hill in England’s Peak District, life coach Zaidha leads a mindfulness exercise during a hike, encouraging the participants to engage their senses — observing sights, structures, and sounds in nature. This activity is part of a retreat (静修活动) organized by Mind Over Mountains, which combines guided outdoor adventures with mental health support. Mind Over Mountains addresses a critical gap in traditional mental wellness offerings by encouraging open discussions about depression and anxiety in a natural setting.
Unlike conventional self-care activities, these retreats prioritize emotional openness, encouraging the participants to share their feelings and experiences. Wellness coach Rob shares his own struggles, setting a mature model of emotional openness. The participants, initially hesitant, later express relief at the supportive environment. Research confirms that nature immersion (沉浸) reduces anxiety and depression, a benefit agreed by attendees, who describe their 2022 retreat as life-changing.
Another organization that has recognized the nature’s therapeutic (治疗的) power is Blackdog Outdoors, founded by Andy Higson. His organization removes common impediments — such as cost and lack of experience — by offering free hikes and low-cost training. Though not therapy meetings, the events, led by outdoor experts and mental health first-aiders, help reduce anxiety and depression and rebuild confidence. Surveys show over 90% of the participants experience lasting mental health improvements. Ruth Israel, one of Mind Over Mountains attendee, credits the retreat in nature with sparking personal growth and self-acceptance.
Even challenging weather — like cold rain — becomes part of the healing process, teaching recovery and teamwork. These innovative retreats not only provide a unique approach to mental health support but highlight the importance of nature and community in the healing process. By combining natural immersion with suitable guidance, they offer a powerful treatment method for anxiety and depression, reminding participants of their place in a larger, healing the world.
8. What can we know about Mind Over Mountains?
A. It is a traditional wellness program. B. It integrates nature with mental health.
C It offers health advice for adventures. D. It is a well-known mental health clinic.
9. What is a key difference between the retreats and traditional self-care activities?
A The retreats focus more on physical fitness. B. Traditional self-care activities discourage sharing.
C. Traditional self-care activities are less effective. D. The retreats emphasize emotional openness.
10. What does the underlined word “impediments” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Barriers. B. Conflicts. C. Principles. D. Alarms.
11. Why does the author mention cold rain in the last paragraph?
A. To describe the challenging conditions the participants face.
B. To illustrate the challenges of mental health recovery.
C. To highlight the role of nature in the healing process.
D. To emphasize the effectiveness of the innovative retreats.

Scientists in Australia have used artificial intelligence (AI) to locate a rare bird called the Plains-wanderer that lives in Australia’s grasslands. The species is now endangered, with its population having declined by over 85%in recent decades as grasslands have been turned into farms and cities. Scientists estimate that only 250 to 1, 000 of these birds remain in the wild.
This bird is often called the Goldilocks of animals because it is very particular about its habitat. There can’t be too much grass or too little. The birds are only about 15 centimeters tall, and are not good at flying, so they spend most of their time on the ground. The females are larger and in charge of protecting the territory, while the males take care of the eggs. They are generally brown and white, with yellow legs and beaks.
Since the birds are hard to spot, scientists planned to locate the birds by “listening” for the birds instead. Scientists set up 35 special recording devices in nine different grassy areas where Plains-wanderers could possibly have been. The devices collected tens of thousands of hours of recordings-far more than humans could analyze. So scientists fed the recordings to an AI system trained to identify the calls of Plains-wanderers.
The AI system discovered Plains-wanderer calls coming from two of the sites. The scientists double-checked and found that the AI system was correct. This is the first time in over 30 years that the Plains-wanderer has been found in the west of Melbourne. Chris Hartnett, the leader of the research, described the discovery as “huge”, comparing it to “finding gold”.
Scientists plan to work with the land owners to help protect the birds’ safety and preserve the grasslands they depend on. And the scientists are still “Listening”-using song meters and AI to try to locate more of these birds, hoping to gain a better understanding of their population and distribution.
12. What has led to the sharp decrease in the number of Plains-wanderer?
A. Competition for food. B. Habitat loss. C. Natural disasters. D. Illegal hunting.
13. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 2?
A. To describe the appearance of the bird. B. To note why the bird is called Goldilocks.
C. To discuss the bird’s habitat requirements. D. To show the bird’s unique characteristics.
14. What can we infer about the birds from the last paragraph?
A. Their protection manages well. B. They are content with their habitat.
C. Their population is still unclear. D. They have adapted to human activities.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Adopt AI to Track Down Endangered Bird B. The Role of AI in Wildlife Conservation
C. The Challenges of Protecting Endangered Bird D. Use AI to Analyze Endangered Species

Alex was a junior high school student. Known for his friendly nature and willingness to help, Alex was always eager to make new friends. However, when a new student named Sam joined the class, Alex found himself facing a challenge he had never encountered before.
Sam was a quiet boy who always seemed unhappy. He never joined in the games during break and rarely spoke to anyone. Alex wanted to help, but he didn’t know where to start. Determined to help Sam, Alex decided to seek advice from their teacher, Mr Smith. After class, Alex approached Mr Smith and said, “Mr Smith, I’ve been trying to befriend Sam, but I don’t know how to reach him. He always seems so sad and distant.” Mr Smith listened thoughtfully and then shared a story with Alex.
“Once, there was a strong iron rod (棒) and a small key,” Mr Smith began. “The iron rod, no matter how hard it tried, couldn’t open a strong lock. But the small key, with just a gentle turn, unlocked it. Sometimes, understanding someone’s heart is more important than trying to fix everything.”
Alex listened carefully, feeling a spark of hope. He realized that he needed to understand Sam better. He decided to find out why Sam was so unhappy. After school, he followed Sam from a distance, making sure not to be noticed. For several days, he observed Sam’s routine, trying to figure out what was troubling him.
One afternoon, Alex saw Sam walking home alone, looking particularly sad. He followed him to a small park where Sam sat on a bench, staring at the ground. Alex approached cautiously and sat down next to him. “Hey, Sam,” he said softly. “Why don’t you ever play with us?” Sam looked up, surprised. “I just moved here,” he whispered. “I left my old friends and relatives behind. I miss them a lot, and I don’t know how to make new friends here.”
Alex felt a wave of empathy. “I understand, Sam,” Alex said gently. “Moving to a new place can be really hard. Sometimes, making new friends can be tough, but it’s worth trying. You’re not alone.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. A

Conducting sea exploration in a reasonable manner
Our oceans, vital for life on Earth, are under threat. Pollution from industrial waste and plastic is harming ocean life. Overfishing is depleting fish stocks, and climate change is causing rising sea levels. These challenges demand urgent action.
To explore the oceans reasonably, we must adopt sustainable practices. First, we should enforce strict regulations to reduce pollution. This includes limiting the discharge of harmful chemicals and plastics into the sea. In addition, sustainable fishing methods are crucial. By setting catch limits and protecting breeding grounds, we can help fish populations recover.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】参考范文:
Over the next few days, Alex purposely included Sam in his activities. He invited Sam to join him and his friends during break, and they played games together. Alex also spent time with Sam outside of school, showing him around the neighborhood and introducing him to other kids. Alex made sure to listen to Sam’s stories about his old home and shared some of his own experiences to make Sam feel more connected. He even organized a small get-together at his house, inviting a few friendly classmates to help Sam feel more welcomed.
Slowly, Sam began to open up. He became more outgoing and confident, eagerly joining in conversations and activities. His smile became a familiar sight in the classroom. The once quiet and distant boy transformed into a lively and engaged student, all because of Alex’s support and care. Sam’s grades improved, and he even started participating in class discussions. His newfound confidence extended beyond school, as he began to explore his new neighborhood with enthusiasm, making friends with other kids in the area.
