21-year-old Jasmine Harrison completed the 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes — a new world record for the youngest female to row alone across the Atlantic.
Harrison, who’s from North Yorkshire, England, didn’t have loads of experience in rowing long distances. In her childhood, she could not even dream of such an ambition. She’d only gotten the idea three years earlier when she happened to be in Antigua, teaching swimming, and saw the end of the 2017 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. “Talking to a family member of a young man that had just completed it, I got to know just how amazing a thing it was. I didn’t say ‘not a chance I would do that,’ but it was more a fact of why not do it?” she said.
Every day, Harrison would row for about 12 hours, pushing her 550-pound boat she bought with some money across the ocean, covering roughly 90 kilometers. The journey left her with much time all by herself, which she said she enjoyed. But things got a little harder after her speaker fell in the water and she could no longer listen to her music.
She had other company along the way. She saw lots of sea life, including several whales. One even rose out of the ocean right next to her boat. “I’m in their environment,” she said. “It’s just amazing.”
Twice, her boat was turned over in the night by large waves. The second time, she hurt her arm quite badly. Another time, she nearly ran into a ship. When her food ran out, she lived on cookies and chocolate. In the face of great hardship and loneliness, she kept going.
On February 20, 2021, she reached the island of Antigua — the end of the journey. She celebrated her arrival with a burger and fries.
4. What made Harrison participate in the 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge?
A. Her childhood hobby and dream. B. Her experience of watching a race.
C. Her swimming teaching experience. D. Her family members’ encouragement.
5. Which of the following best describes Harrison’s ocean trip?
A. Adventurous. B. Pleasant.
C. Boring. D. Expensive.
6. When did Harrison begin rowing across the Atlantic Ocean alone?
A. In November. B. In December.
C. In January. D. In February.
7. What can we learn from Harrison’s story?
A. The early bird catches the worm.
B. Difficulties strengthen the mind.
C. Behind bad luck comes good luck.
D. No way is impossible to courage.
B 5. A 6. B 7. D

C
Ask students to describe their brain, and they’re likely to suggest a computer, a command center, or maybe a lightning-fast communications network. But they’d be better off thinking of the brain as a muscle that gets stronger with use. Researchers now understand that IQ isn’t fixed at birth. Just as we get more physically fit from exercising, we can build brainpower through the act of learning.
Children who adopt what psychologist Carol Dweck calls a growth mindset (思维模式) understand that intelligence isn’t fixed but can be developed through effort. In Mindset, Dweck explains why students who have a growth mindset are more willing to tackle challenges, learn from failure, and see criticism as useful feedback (反馈) rather than an excuse to give up. This is the kind of thinking that keeps students motivated, even when learning is hard work.
The good news is that even the mindset isn’t fixed. A growth mindset can be learned and enhanced by messages that praise persistence and set high expectations. For example, help students understand that challenging assignments will stretch their “thinking muscles.” At the same time, provide them with necessary support so they don’t get discouraged.
It is widely believed that all brains are not equal and that context and ability influence learning. The brain connects new information to the old and can be changed by experience.
Effective teaching strategies help students move toward higher-order thinking, or what neurologists call executive (执行) function. As professor Judy Willis, MD explains, “When educators offer students chances to put their learning into practice, particularly by engaging them in genuine, personally relevant activities accompanied by formative assessments and corrective feedback throughout a unit, the facts students learn are no longer rote (死记硬背) memory. Instead, these facts become solidly integrated into an interconnected memory framework, rather than being deserted due to lack of use.”
Of course, all this brain activity is happening in a unique way for each student. By addressing learners’ individual needs, educators can help students strengthen the bonds that will lead to deeper understanding.
8. Why does the author compare the brain to a muscle?
A. To prove they possess memory cells.
B. To show they can be strengthened through exercise.
C. To emphasize they transport information quickly.
D. To illustrate they are important organs of the body.
9. What are children with a growth mindset like according to Dweck?
A. They tend to shy away from trouble.
B. They prefer positive feedback from others.
C. They regard intelligence as an unchangeable quality.
D. They view barriers as opportunities for personal growth.
10. Which of the following enhances executive function?
A. Creative engagement. B. Organizing activities personally.
C. Engaging in direct interaction. D. Complete independence.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. IQ and Its Influence on Learning
B. The Growth Mindset: A Key to Difficulty-Solving
C. The Significance of Executive Function in Education
D. Brainpower Building: Encourage a Growth Mindset
B 9. D 10. A 11. D
根据第一段“But they’d be better off thinking of the brain as a muscle that gets stronger with use. Researchers now understand that IQ isn’t fixed at birth. Just as we get more physically fit from exercising, we can build brainpower through the act of learning.(但他们最好把大脑想象成一块随着使用而变得更强壮的肌肉。研究人员现在明白,智商并不是与生俱来的。就像我们通过锻炼变得更健康一样,我们可以通过学习来建立智力)”可知,作者把大脑比作肌肉是为了表明智力可以通过锻炼得到加强。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“In Mindset, Dweck explains why students who have a growth mindset are more willing to tackle challenges, learn from failure, and see criticism as useful feedback (反馈) rather than an excuse to give up.(在《心态》一书中,德韦克解释了为什么拥有成长型心态的学生更愿意应对挑战,从失败中学习,并将批评视为有用的反馈,而不是放弃的借口)”可知,有成长型思维的孩子会把遇到的困难看作成长的机会,而不轻言放弃。
根据第五段“Effective teaching strategies help students move toward higher-order thinking, or what neurologists call executive (执行) function. Instead, these facts become solidly integrated into an interconnected memory framework, rather than being deserted due to lack of use.”(有效的教学策略帮助学生进入高阶思维,或者神经学家所说的执行功能。 故选A。
根据第二段“Children who adopt what psychologist Carol Dweck calls a growth mindset (思维模式) understand that intelligence isn’t fixed but can be developed through effort.(采用心理学家Carol Dweck所说的成长型思维模式的孩子明白,智力不是固定不变的,而是可以通过努力来发展的)”结合文章围绕大脑能力提升展开,包括成长型思维培养、有效教学策略等,D选项“脑力建设:鼓励成长心态”全面概括了文章核心内容,最符合文章标题。故选D。
D
Technology seems to discourage slow, immersive reading. Reading on a screen, particularly a phone screen, tires your eyes and makes it harder for you to keep your place. So online writing tends to be more skimmable and list-like than print.
We shouldn’t overplay this danger. All readers skim. Skimming is the skill we acquire as children as we learn to read more skillfully. Nor is there anything new in these fears about declining attention spans, the length of time we spend concentrating on reading. So far, the anxieties have proved to be false alarms. “Quite a few critics have been worried about attention span lately and see very short stories as signs of cultural decline,” the American author Selvin Brown wrote. “No one ever said that poems were evidence of short attention spans.”
And yet the Internet has certainly changed the way we read. For a start, it means that there is more to read, because more people than ever are writing. And digital writing is meant for rapid release and response. An online article starts forming a comment string underneath as soon as it is published. This mode of writing and reading can be interactive and fun. But often it treats other people’s words as something to be quickly harvested as fodder to say something else. Everyone talks over the top of everyone else, desperate to be heard.
Perhaps we should slow down. Reading is constantly promoted as a social good and source of personal achievement. But this advocacy often emphasizes “enthusiastic”, “passionate” or “eager” reading, none of which adjectives suggest slow, quiet absorption.
To a slow reader, a piece of writing can only be fully understood by immersing oneself in the words and their slow comprehension of a line of thought. The slow reader is like a swimmer who stops counting the number of pool laps he has done and just enjoy s how his body feels and moves in water.
The human need for this kind of deep reading is too tenacious for any new technology to destroy. We often assume that technological change can’t be stopped and happens in one direction, so that older media like “dead-tree” books are kicked out by newer, more virtual forms. In practice, older technologies can coexist with new ones. The Kindle and the iPad have not killed off the printed book any more than the car killed off the bicycle. We still want to enjoy slowly-formed ideas and carefully-chosen words. Even in a fast-moving age, there is time for slow reading.
12. What is the author’s attitude towards Selvin Brown’s opinion?
A. Favorable. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.
13. The author would probably agree that ________.
A. advocacy of passionate reading helps promote slow reading
B. digital writing leads to too much speaking and not enough reflection
C. the public should be aware of the impact skimming has on the brain
D. the number of Internet readers is declining due to the advances of technology
14. What does the underlined word “tenacious” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Straight-forward. B. Old-fashioned.
C. Deep-rooted. D. Well-balanced.
15. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A Slow Reading Is Here to Stay
B. Digital Technology Prevents Slow Reading
C. Screen vs. Print: Which Requires Deep Reading?
D. Reading Is Not a Race: The Wonder of Deep Reading
A 13. B 14. C 15. A
在第二段“Nor is there anything new in these fears about declining attention spans. So far, the anxieties have proved to be false alarms.(对注意力持续时间下降的担忧也不是什么新鲜事。到目前为止,这些焦虑被证明是虚惊一场。)”中,作者表明了对“注意力持续时间下降”这一现象的态度:这种焦虑是没有意义的。接着作者引用了美国作家Selvin Brown的话““Quite a few critics have been worried about attention span lately and see very short stories as signs of cultural decline,” the American author Selvin Brown wrote. “No one ever said that poems were evidence of short attention spans.”(美国作家Selvin Brown写道:“相当多的评论家最近开始担心注意力持续时间,他们认为非常短的故事是文化衰落的标志。但从来没有人说过诗歌是注意力持续时间短的证据。”)”来证明自己的观点。由此可知,作者与作家Selvin Brown的观点一致,所以他对Selvin Brown的观点是持赞成态度。故选A。
根据第三段“And digital writing is meant for rapid release and response. An online article starts forming a comment string underneath as soon as it is published. This mode of writing and reading can be interactive and fun. But often it treats other people’s words as something to be quickly harvested as fodder to say something else. Everyone talks over the top of everyone else, desperate to be heard.(数字写作意味着快速释放和反应。
too…to… 以至于不能……”;根据画线词上文“The human need for this kind of deep reading is too tenacious(人类对这种深度阅读的需求也是如此tenacious……)”
文章第一段中“Technology seems to discourage slow, immersive reading. Reading on a screen, particularly a phone screen, tires your eyes and makes it harder for you to keep your place. So online writing tends to be more skimmable and list-like than print.(科技似乎妨碍了缓慢的沉浸式阅读。在屏幕上阅读,尤其是在手机屏幕上阅读,会让你的眼睛疲劳,让你更难保持自己的位置。因此,网络写作往往比印刷写作更简略、更像清单。)”提出一种担忧:科技影响了慢阅读。结合第二段中“We shouldn’t overplay this danger.(我们不应该夸大这种危险。)”和最后一段“In practice, older technologies can coexist with new ones. The Kindle has not killed off the printed book any more than the car killed off the bicycle. We still want to enjoy slowly-formed ideas and carefully-chosen words. Even in a fast-moving age, there is time for slow reading.(实际上,旧技术可以与新技术共存。Kindle并没有消灭纸质书,就像汽车没有消灭自行车一样。我们仍然想要享受缓慢形成的思想和精心选择的词语。即使在一个快速发展的时代,也有时间进行慢速阅读)”可推知,作者驳斥了这种说明,指出了慢阅读的重要性和好处,并指出科技不能改变人们对这种深度慢阅读的需求。因此A选项“慢阅读会一直持续下去”是文章最佳标题。故选A。
Visit a zoo, and you may love watching polar bears as they swim through a pool. Zoos can be important places for polar bear research. ___16___The more we can learn about how global warming is affecting them, the better we can design conservation plans.
However, tracking them is tricky due to their wide-range movement. The main type of tracker has been a radio collar, attached like a necklace around the bear's neck. This device sends location information back to researchers. ___17___It’s not safe to put them on younger bears — as they grow, the collar may get too tight. And male bears’ heads are narrower than their necks, so the collars slide right off.
An international team developed new tracking methods inspired by “burr (芒刺) on fur” idea. The device stuck to the bears’ fur, like burrs on your dog after a walk in the woods. ___18___They found that in the warmer months, the animals hung out on land, moving little and conserving energy. As temperatures dropped, they returned to the ice to hunt.
___19___But it was invaluable to confirm it with reliable data. Additionally, it’s always a bonus to have one more way to track, understand — and hopefully help — these impressive white mammals of the north.
To aid polar bears further, we must address the root cause:climate change. What can we do then? Ride your bike to school instead of asking a parent to drive you. Unplug devices when they are charged to conserve energy. Turn off computers and lights when they are not in use. ___20___
A. Little things can indeed help a lot.
B. But never underestimate the effect of climate change.
C. Unfortunately, the collars only work on adult females.
D. As sea ice declines, polar bears spend more time on shore.
E. The researchers had already suspected this is what they did.
F. The researchers used the design to observe bears along the coast of Hudson Bay.
G But observing these animals in the wild is the top way to study and protect them.
G 17. C 18. F 19. E 20. A
根据上文“Zoos can be important places for polar bear research(动物园可以成为北极熊研究的重要场所)”和下文“The more we can learn about how global warming is affecting them, the better we can design conservation plans(我们对全球变暖如何影响它们了解得越多,就越能更好地设计保护计划)”可知,此处需要一个句子来引出在野外观察北极熊对研究和保护它们的重要性。G选项“But observing these animals in the wild is the top way to study and protect them.(但是在野外观察这些动物是研究和保护它们的最佳方式。)”
根据上文“The main type of tracker has been a radio collar, attached like a necklace around the bear's neck. This device sends location information back to researchers(主要的追踪器类型是无线电项圈,像项链一样套在熊的脖子上。这个设备将位置信息发送回研究人员那里)”以及下文“It’s not safe to put them on younger bears — as they grow, the collar may get too tight. And male bears’ heads are narrower than their necks, so the collars slide right off(把它们戴在小熊身上不安全——随着它们长大,项圈可能会变得太紧。而且雄性北极熊的头比脖子窄,所以项圈会直接滑落)”可知,此处应说明无线电项圈在使用对象上的局限性。C选项“Unfortunately, the collars only work on adult females(不幸的是,这些项圈只对成年雌性北极熊有效)”符合语境,介绍了项圈的适用情况,故选C项。
根据上文“An international team developed new tracking methods inspired by “burr (芒刺) on fur” idea. The device stuck to the bears’ fur, like burrs on your dog after a walk in the woods(一个国际团队受到“毛发上的芒刺”想法的启发,开发了新的追踪方法。这个设备粘在熊的皮毛上,就像你在树林里散步后狗身上的芒刺一样)”和下文“They found that in the warmer months, the animals hung out on land, moving little and conserving energy. As temperatures dropped, they returned to the ice to hunt(他们发现,在温暖的月份里,这些动物在陆地上闲逛,很少活动,保存能量。
E选项“The researchers had already suspected this is what they did(研究人员已经怀疑它们就是这样做的)”表示的含义符合语境,故选E项。
根据上文“What can we do then? Ride your bike to school instead of asking a parent to drive you. Unplug devices when they are charged to conserve energy. Turn off computers and lights when they are not in use(那么我们能做些什么呢?骑自行车上学,而不是让父母开车送你。设备充电后拔掉插头以节省能源。不用电脑和灯时把它们关掉)”可知,上文说的是诸如骑自行车上学、设备充电后拔掉插头以节省能源以及不用电脑和灯时把它们关掉等这些小事,可推理出此处应总结这些小事对帮助北极熊的作用。A选项“Little things can indeed help a lot(小事确实能帮上大忙)”符合语境,故选A项。

Embracing AI Assistants Wisely
Recently, an increasing number of classmates in my class have resorted to AI assistants to complete study tasks, ranging from writing essays to solving math problems.
On the one hand, AI tools undeniably offer practical benefits. Take ChatGPT, for instance: it can generate instant explanations for complex concepts, saving hours of tedious research. AI can serve as a valuable learning aide, especially for tackling repetitive tasks or bridging knowledge gaps.
However, the risks of over-dependence are equally evident. Last week, a group project saw half the team copy AI-generated outlines without critical thinking, resulting in identical structures that failed to address the assignment’s unique requirements. Worse still, relying on AI to “think” for us erodes essential skills — like logical reasoning and creative problem-solving — that form the core of education.
In essence, AI should be a “study partner” rather than a “task substitute.” After all, what matters most is not the answers we get, but the minds we shape in the process.

Ask students to describe their brain and they’re likely to suggest a computer, a command center, or maybe a lightning-fast communications network.

D. They view barriers as opportunities for personal growth.
10. Which of the following enhances executive function?
A. Creative engagement. B. Organizing activities personally.

A. Slow Reading Is Here to Stay
B. Digital Technology Prevents Slow Reading
C. Screen vs. Print: Which Requires Deep Reading?
D. Reading Is Not a Race: The Wonder of Deep Reading

G. But observing these animals in the wild is the top way to study and protect them.
