The London group provided information on 32000 wildlife populations which included more than 5,000 species. The researchers found that population sizes had reduced by 69 percent on average. They said the loss of forests, human exploitation of the environment, pollution, and climate change were major causes of the loss. Land-use change is still the biggest threat to wildlife. However, the researchers added, “If we cannot limit warming to 1.5℃, climate change is likely to become the primary cause of biodiversity loss in the coming years.” Wildlife populations in Latin America and the Caribbean Sea area were greatly affected. The research showed a 94 percent drop in those areas in over 50 years. Wildlife populations in river and lake habitats decreased the most. Freshwater populations have reduced by an average of 83 percent since 1970. For example, the population of pink river dolphins in the Amazon River area of Brazil fell by 65 percent between 1994 and 2016. These findings are a red flag that warns of a larger system failure on the horizon. Even one species’ population reduction can affect other species, eventually impacting the ecosystem’s ability to function. Humans depend on a stable climate, predictable weather patterns, and productive farmland and fisheries to develop, but the current trends are severe enough to threaten many life-sustaining systems. Our future depends on reversing (扭转) the loss of nature just as much as it depends on addressing climate change. And you can’t solve one without solving the other. Everyone plays a role in reversing these trends, from individuals to companies to governments. If nothing changes, animal populations will undoubtedly continue to fall, driving wildlife to extinction and threatening the wholeness of the ecosystems on which we all depend. 31. How does the author explain the reduction of freshwater wildlife in Paragraph 3? A. By listing figures. B. By analyzing the causes. C. By making a comparison. D. By referring to a concept. 32. What can we learn from Paragraph 4? A. Climate change threatens many wild animals. B. Farmland is the basis of life-sustaining systems. C. Extreme weather events have become more frequent. D. Species variety is important to maintain a stable ecosystem. 33. What is the main purpose of the text? A. To explain the difficulty of restoring ecosystems. B. To call on people to take action to protect nature. C. To present the increasing trend of climate change. D. To show people’s efforts in making up for the loss of nature. B It is a cold, dark winter evening — the kind of night that can have runners struggling to find the encouragement to run out. But there will be none of the usual “shall-I-shan’t-I?” dialogue going on in Sarah Donaghy’s head, because tonight is Food Bank Run. Donaghy, a teacher and the welfare officer for Fareham running club, organised the first Food Bank Run in February 2018. “The idea was that, instead of our usual training run, we’d fill backpacks with food to donate to the local food bank and run there, where volunteers would be waiting to receive it,” she says. Donaghy was expecting about 20 members to take part: “I lost count by the time I got to 70.” Claire Johnson, the community team leader at the Waypoint Hub, which houses food bank, says, “It was an amazing and emotional experience to see so many runners arrive at our building, bringing much-needed supplies.” But it wasn’t just the food bank that benefited from it. “The runners loved it,” says Donaghy. “The following week after the first run, they were all asking when we could do it again.” A running equipment company, Runr, joined to help with publicity and event cooperation, creating a Food Bank Run website, complete with an interactive (交互式的) map of events. “Last year, more than 500 running groups, clubs, events and parkruns got involved, donating more than 77 tonnes of supplies to food banks in their communities,” says Craig Winter, one of the founders of Runr. The event spreads a significant factor — joining with others in physical activity that has a real purpose. It is not “I must do this long run because I’m training for a marathon” or “I must exercise because I’m trying to lose weight”, but something greater. “I truly believe that running for a cause changes your view,” Donaghy says. “Yes, you could do it by entering a marathon and raising money for a charity, but there’s something quite special about handing over food that’s going to someone in your community who really needs it.” 34. What did runners do in the Food Bank Run? A. They performed their usual training. B. They prepared food for the volunteers. C. They delivered food to the local food bank. D. They collected donations during the run. 35. How did Johnson feel about the first Food Bank Run? A. Appreciative. B. Puzzled. C. Worried. D. Curious. 36. What can we learn about Runr? A. It becomes popular online. B. It helps organize activities. C It designs the running route. D. It provides free running shoes. 37. What is the best title of the text? A. Advertise for a Club B. Run for a Good Cause C. The Power of Running D. The Charm of Volunteering C From the health point of view we are living in a marvelous age. We are immunized (免疫) from birth against many of the most dangerous diseases. A large number of once deadly illnesses can now be cured by modern drugs and medical treatment. It is almost certain that one day cures will be found for the most stubborn remaining diseases. The expectation of life has increased enormously. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the unbelievable slaughter (屠杀) of men, women and children on the roads. Man vs the motor-car! It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. Thousands of people the world over are killed or horribly killed each year and we are quietly sitting back and letting it happen. It has been rightly said that when a man is sitting behind a steering wheel (方向盘), his car becomes the extension of his personality. There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man's very worst qualities. People who are normally quiet and pleasant may become unrecognizable when they are behind a steering-wheel. They are ill-mannered and aggressive, willful as two-year-old and absolutely selfish. All their hidden disappointments and regrets seem to be brought by the act of driving. The surprising thing is that society smiles so kindly on the motorist and seems to forgive his behavior. Everything is done for his convenience. Cities are allowed to become almost impossible to live in because of heavy tragic; towns are made ugly by huge car parks; the countryside is ruined by road networks; and the mass annual slaughter becomes nothing more than a statistic, to be conveniently forgotten. It is high time a world system of laws were created to reduce this senseless waste of human life. As for driving, the laws of some countries are not strict and even the strictest are not strict enough. Here are a few examples of some of the things that might be done. The driving test should be standardized and made far more difficult than it is; all the drivers should be made to take a test every three years or so; the age at which young people are allowed to drive any vehicle should be raised to at least 21; all vehicles should be put through strict annual tests for safety. Even the smallest amount of alcohol in the blood can affect a person's driving ability. Present drinking and driving laws (where they exist) should be made much stricter. Maximum and minimum speed limits should be introduced on all roads. Governments should lay down safety specifications (规范) for manufacturers, as has been done in the USA. All advertising stressing power and performance should be banned. These measures may sound too severe. But surely nothing should be considered as too severe if it results in reducing the annual toll of human life. After all, the world is for human beings, not motor-cars. 38. The main idea of this passage is ________. A. Traffic accidents are mainly caused by motorists B. Thousands of people the world over are killed each year C. The laws of some countries about driving are not too strict D. Only stricter traffic laws can prevent accidents 39. What does the author think of society toward motorists? A. Society laughs at the motorists. B. Huge car parks are built in the cities and towns. C. Victims of accidents are nothing. D. Society-forgives their rude driving. 40. Why does the author say: “his car becomes the extension of his personality?” A. Driving can show his hidden self. B. Driving can show the other part of his personality. C. Driving can bring out his character. D. His car can express his temper. 41. Which of the followings is NOT mentioned as a way against traffic accidents? A. Build more highways. B.
