It’s summertime! Plants and animals are all enjoying the warm sunshine. If you look around in fields or gardens you’ll see sunflowers stretching towards the Sun, their golden heads making everyone smile.
You might also spot something that looks like tiny yellow pineapples growing in sunny spots. These are the flowers of the pineapple weed. Squeeze them and you’ll get a whiff of pineapples – but sadly, they’re not for eating.
The large blue is one of the biggest blue butterflies in the UK. Keep an eye out for a dark blue butterfly with grey borders and big spots on its wings. Along the coastline, you might see black-and-white razorbills gliding gracefully through the air or diving into the sea in search of food. On their underwater journeys, they may come face-to-face with the delicate compass jellyfish, its wobbly transparent bell (dome top) drifting gently in the currents.
At this time of year, baby sika deer are starting to explore the forests and meadows. Their spotty coats blend in with the leaves and grass, making them tricky to spot. There’s also the great tit, a bird with a bright yellow belly – listen out for its cheerful song this month.
TAKE THE PLUNGE
Razorbills are expert divers, plunging to depths of 120 metres to hunt for fish.

Billions of cicadas have started to emerge from under the ground in parts of the Northeast, Midwest, and Southeast US this year. Although the insects are known for making loud noises, they don't harm humans and can help the environment, such as by serving as a food source for other animals. The group of cicadas emerging this year hasn't been seen above ground since 2008.
There are more than 3,000 species of cicadas, and most appear above ground every period. But seven species, called periodical cicadas, in North America stay underground for many years. Four species emerge on a 13 - year cycle, while three follow a 17 - year cycle. A group together is called a brood and this year's group is Brood X. Cicadas include multiple broods.
Cicadas emerge as grubs, or nymphs, once the weather gets warmer. They shed their skin and take on their adult form. As adults, they stay above ground for four to six weeks, during which time males sing songs to attract female mates. After mating, the females lay hundreds of eggs, which hatch after several weeks. The nymphs dig down on branch tips before burrowing underground and starting the cycle over again. The adults die without returning underground.
Brood X is one of the largest periodical cicada broods to appear every 17 years. However, there will be fewer cicadas this year than last year, when two separate broods emerged at about the same time. Many cicadas in Brood XIV will emerge in one large patch from Georgia to Oregon. Other populations will emerge in central Pennsylvania, Long Island, New York, and Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
So far this year, cicadas in North Carolina, Kentucky, and Ohio have been seen in numbers. The highest numbers of cicadas are expected to appear in Indiana and Tennessee. The Brood X cicadas should be gone by July and won't be seen again until 2038? This is a once - in - a - generation activity. Gene Kritsky, an insect researcher, told USA Today.

Our seas are full of secrets. Although the ocean covers more than 70% of Earth’s surface, only around a quarter of the seafloor has been mapped.
Learning about marine ecosystems (living things and their environment) is important because what happens underwater also affects life on land. A healthy ocean provides oxygen, food and jobs for people all around the world. Plus, there are many wonderful marine animals living in these awe-inspiring habitats. Are you ready to meet some of the strangest and most spectacular marine creatures? Let’s plunge into this amazing underwater world.
Meet the giants
Let’s start with the largest animal in the world: the blue whale. Growing to around 30 metres in length – longer than a basketball court. With some of its blood vessels big enough for a small child to crawl through, the size of this marine mammal makes it easy for us to spot. Or does it?
Even the largest ocean animals can be hard for scientists to find. That’s because they live far away from shore, travel huge distances, dive into deep waters and can be nervous of boats. Scientists are still trying to learn how far blue whales travel and how long they live – the oldest recorded individual is thought to be around 110 years old.
Around half the size of a blue whale, at 17 metres long, humpback whales are still one of the biggest animals in the sea. They are known for their epic migrations, swimming thousands of miles each year between the chilly polar regions where they feed and the warm tropical waters where they breed.
Scientists have discovered that this magnificent migration helps keep the ocean healthy. As humpbacks swim from cold waters (where there are lots of important nutrients) to the tropics (where there aren’t as many), they spread nitrogen and other important elements – you guessed it, by peeing and pooing! They also move nutrients from the deep to the shallows when they dive down to find food, and then come up to the surface to poo.
Big fish in a big sea
Large predatory sharks such as great whites and tiger sharks might be smaller than most whales

1.Cicadas don't harm humans and can help the environment by serving as a food source for other animals.
2.Cicadas emerge as nymphs when the weather gets warmer. They shed their skin to become adults. As adults, they stay above ground for four to six weeks, mate, and females lay eggs. The eggs hatch into nymphs, which dig underground and start the cycle over, while adults die.
3.I would be most curious to observe the process of nymphs shedding their skin to become adults. Because it seems like a mysterious transformation, and I want to know how they manage to complete this change and what it looks like up close. (答案不唯一,比如好奇雄蝉唱歌吸引雌蝉的具体声音和行为,或者蝉卵孵化成若虫的过程等,合理阐述原因即可 )
4.The 17 - year cycle means that people will see the emergence of these cicadas very rarely, only once in about 17 years. It makes the event a special and memorable experience, like a rare natural phenomenon that people can look forward to and talk about for a long time.
5.I think it might have long - term impacts. For example, the large number of cicadas could provide a rich food source for predators, which might affect the population dynamics of those predator species. Also, when the cicadas die, their bodies decompose and could enrich the soil, potentially influencing plant growth in the area. (答案不唯一,合理分析对生态系统如动植物种群、土壤等方面的影响即可 )
