Have you seen the yellow flowering trees in Shenzhen? The trees are called the Yellow Trumpet (风铃) Trees because their flowers take on the shape of trumpets.
They are native to Central and South America but are loved worldwide for their beauty. During spring, the trees bloom (开花), covering themselves with groups of golden-yellow flowers. These flowers are so bright that the trees look like they are shining! When the trees bloom, their green leaves usually fall off, leaving only the yellow flowers, which create an amazing view.
The trees can grow quite tall, reaching up to 25 meters, and their branches spread wide, providing plenty of shade. Their flowers attract bees, butterflies and so on, making them not just pretty but also helpful to the environment. The flowering period lasts for about a month. (2025·广东深圳·模拟预测)We’ve all been there. You’re working on a big project that needs to be finished quickly, and somebody suddenly interrupts (打断) you and stops your work. For example, they show you photos of their vacation, or they tell you about their weekend. While those interruptions can be annoying, a new research from the University of Cincinnati says that they could have some real benefits as well.
Researchers surveyed 111 people twice a day for three weeks, asking them questions about their experiences at the office that day. The survey asked them if they had been interrupted at work, how mentally tired they were, and how satisfied they were with their job.
The study found that while interruptions can have a negative influence on a worker’s productivity, the social aspect of stopping work to talk to a coworker can help them feel more like they belong. That is to say, they feel comfortable or welcome in the situation or place.
The lead study author Harshad Puranik said that this feeling of belonging in the workplace can increase a worker’s job satisfaction, which is a feeling of happiness because one’s wants or needs have been met, even if the work itself is being negatively affected by the interruption.
If you still don’t want to be interrupted at work, there are some things you can do. For example, you can get to the office before anybody else arrives, so you have time to work alone, turn your phone off, or just tell people that you are too busy to talk.

Even the entrance was dark, Scrooge knew his way in the fog without a light. On the door of the building, there was a large metal door knocker. (2025·广东广州·一模)As we know, playing tug of war can help build your strength and raise your team spirit. But do you know that you can win the game even if you are not the strongest? Today we will enter tug of war and explore how winning the game might be a lot more than strength. And you will find it more than a competitive and teamwork sport!MATERIALS:
At least two kids
A strong but soft rope
A piece of tapeSTEPS:
Place a colored tape on the ground to mark the center line, making sure it can be seen clearly by all players. After that, divide the players into two equal teams and have them line up at opposite ends of the rope. Next, provide gloves for players to protect their hands, and remind everyone to have a tight hold of the rope and avoid suddenly letting go. Then the players hold each end of the rope and wait for the signal. As soon as the judge shouts “Go!”, both teams will pull the rope backward as hard as they can.MORE ABOUT THE GAME
When playing, each player on each side of the rope has four forces—ground, tension, friction, and weight. If all forces add up to 0, the players won’t budge. And if they don’t add up to 0, the players will be pulled forward. Therefore, you don’t have to be the strongest to win. Rather, it’s about friction. The frictional force is between the person and the ground. The greater the friction, the better the team can hold its position and pull the other team.

(2025·广东广州·一模)I joined our school band as a drummer last September. At first, I was excited to play cool rhythms and make friends. The drum set looked shiny, and the other members smiled warmly when I arrived. But my happiness didn’t last long.
After a month, things changed. We started practicing a fast rock song. While the guitarists and keyboard player followed the beat perfectly, my hands always froze. “Stop! Steve’s drums are too slow again,” our teacher Angie would say during rehearsals. My face burned when teammates sighed. One afternoon, Angie asked me to stay after practice while others left. “Why am I the only one who can’t get it right?” I shouted, kicking a drum pedal angrily. Tears rolled down as I hid in the music room.
Angie knocked gently and sat beside me. “Remember why you joined the band?” she asked softly. “Every great drummer started somewhere.” Her words made me think of how I’d practiced basic beats for hours at home. Maybe I needed to try harder.
The next day, something surprising happened. During lunch break, our lead guitarist Tina came to me “Let’s practice together!” she said. Soon, the whole band stayed late three times a week. Tina taught me counting tricks, the bass player Mark clapped rhythms with me, and Angie demonstrated drumming techniques. Slowly, my hands stopped trembling
On the day of our big performance, my heart raced as the curtain opened. When the spotlight hit my drum set, I took a deep breath and remembered my friends’ encouraging smiles. The moment my drumsticks hit the first beat, everything clicked into place. We played perfectly, and the crowd cheered wildly.

(2025·广东广州·一模)In 2019, I started learning Chinese at the Confucius Institute (孔子学院) in London. Though I spoke several foreign languages, Chinese felt totally new to me. Characters looked like difficult pictures, but their beauty attracted me into learning Chinese. Tones (声调) reminded me of singing, and sentences followed rules I’d never seen before. Every lesson brought both challenges and surprises.
Soon, I realized language was just the key to a greater treasure: China’s rich cultural world. My teachers introduced me to Tang poems’ short yet powerful lines, which painted lively scenes in just a few words. Ancient books like The Book of Songs showed how poetry expressed Chinese thoughts long ago. My interest grew into different areas. Philosophy (哲学) classes taught me about Confucius’ wisdom. Art history opened my eyes to ink paintings where mountains and rivers seemed to dance on paper.
One exciting discovery was about China’s powerful women. I met stories of FuHao, a brave army leader from ancient times, and Wu Zetian, the only female emperor. Their lives showed women shaped China’s history in special ways that textbooks sometimes forget.
These experiences lit a dream in me: to build a cultural bridge! Why not share these amazing stories through a magazine? I pictured pages filled with Chinese tradition—tea art, myths (神话), festivals, and those wonderful poems. The magazine would use simple English. Many people here in London find Chinese culture distant, but colorful photos and interesting articles could bring it closer.
Now, whenever I write, I imagine curious teenagers turning the magazine’s pages, eyes widening at China’s wonders. My journey began with simple “nihao” but became an adventure connecting two worlds. As long as people stay interested, this bridge between cultures will keep growing.

C.It’s a method for communication. D.It’s a way to study ancient views.
3.Which would be the best front page for the writer’s magazine?
A. B. C. D.
4.How did the writer feel about learning Chinese?
A.It was challenging and tiring. B.It focused on ancient history.
C.It created cultural connections. D.It took longer than she expected.

(2025·广东广州·二模)On the first day of school, our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady with a smile. She said, “Hi, handsome! My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?”
I laughed and warmly responded, “Of course you may!” She gave me a giant squeeze (拥抱). “Why are you in college at such a young, innocent (幼稚的) age?” I asked.
She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel.”
“No, seriously?” I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.
“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.
After class we walked to the Student Union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends. Every day of the next three months we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always attracted listening to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon (校园偶像) and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and enjoyed the attention from other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the term, we invited Rose to speak at a student gathering. I’ll never forget what she taught us. “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. There are so many people walking around who are dead, and they don’t even know it.” she said.
“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability,” she added. “But growing up requires finding opportunities in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do.”
She concluded her speech by courageously singing The Rose. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics (歌词) and live them out in our daily life.
At the year’s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years. We’d always keep her in mind because it is the wonderful woman who taught us by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.

(2025·广东广州·二模)Do you think automated (自动化的) kitchens only exist in science fiction shows like Star Trek? Well, think again! Nowadays, robots are already being used to do many things in the kitchen, like frying chicken, making pizzas, and preparing salads. And artificial intelligence (AI) can even create new recipes based on the ingredients available in a kitchen. There are also more advanced ideas being developed to make high-quality restaurant kitchens automated.
At first, because new technologies are usually expensive, it’s the restaurants and other businesses that start using AI kitchen technologies. But as time passes by, the prices will probably go down enough for ordinary families to afford. This will change how our homes and society work.
There are some good things about AI kitchens. For example, cooks don’t have to do boring jobs like peeling potatoes or standing in one place for hours. This saves time and lets people do more important things. AI can also provide different kinds of special diets and tastes to meet personal needs.
However, there are also problems. Cooking is not just about making food. It’s a good activity that helps people communicate and express themselves. If we don’t need humans to cook anymore, these good things might disappear. Family relationships might not be as good without the time spent together in the kitchen.
Moreover, the kitchen is like a science lab at home. It’s important for kids to learn about materials, chemistry, and how to solve problems through cooking.
We also have to think about cultural problems. Sometimes, AI might change traditional recipes and cooking methods because it doesn’t understand cultural details well. This could make the dishes less diverse. If we rely too much on technology for cooking, the food might taste the same. It’s similar to how AI art images look alike in various apps.
In conclusion, while new technologies bring convenience, they also have a price. We need to think about the possible problems they might cause in our society, especially when it comes to something as important as food in our daily lives.
1.Why are restaurants the first to use AI kitchen technologies?
A.They can afford the high costs.
B.They have more space for robots.
C.They want to attract more customers.
D.They are more interested in automation.
2.What is the most possible advantage of AI kitchens?
A.Saving money on food. B.Reducing kitchen waste.
C.Meeting various tastes. D.Improving family relationships.
3.What aspects may AI kitchens have problems with according to the passage?
A.They cannot provide special diets and tastes.
B.They cannot reduce the price of kitchen technology.
C.They cannot conduct scientific experiments in the kitchen.
D.They cannot truly understand traditional recipes without cultural knowledge.
4.What is the author’s attitude towards the use of AI kitchens?
A.Uncaring. B.Unclear. C.Positive. D.Cautious.

(2025·广东广州·二模)“Save the whales!” That’s what the picture on Jake Smith’s bedroom wall said. Jake liked having a picture that said something important: that showed what he cared. He just never expected to get a chance to save a real whale, one right in his own neighbourhood.
It was a Saturday morning when the newspaper first reported the whale’s coming. Many animals were swimming close to the beach in Jake’s home town. All the local people rushed out to the beach to see them. They were expecting a beautiful show, better than a movie, but nothing they’d have to do anything about.
Then one whale swam directly towards the land. It came in with the waves. When the waves receded, it stayed. Its huge body was on the sand. Suddenly, Jake and his family and all the others were no longer sightseers. They had to become rescuers. A few people ran towards the huge whale. They pushed and tried to force the whale back into the water, but it was no use. The whale was so heavy that they couldn’t move it.
An animal rescue service team soon arrived in a truck with heavy lifting machinery, to help move the whale. Jake and his family couldn’t do much on the beach, so they went back to their house and made sandwiches and hot tea for the rescuers. At least, Jake thought, they could do something.
Back at the beach, they offered the food to the rescuers and were happy to see that it was needed. It was getting dark. Some people lined up their cars along the beach and shone the headlights on the sand. The rescuers would not give up. After trying many times, they were finally able to lift the whale into the water. Everyone cheered when it headed out to the sea. It swam out about a mile and then disappeared for a moment under the sea. (2025·广东广州·二模)On January 20th, Chinese AI company DeepSeek released its latest AI model, DeepSeek-R1, which took the AI world by surprise. The model can perform the same text-based tasks as other advanced models, but at a lower cost. The company also launched its namesake (同名) chatbot, which is a direct competitor to ChatGPT.
DeepSeek-R1 is particularly good at tasks that require logical inference (逻辑推理) and real-time decision - making. Whether it’s solving difficult math problems or breaking down complex scientific questions. DeepSeek-R1’s unique system allows it to improve its thinking and problem-solving abilities over time.
Unlike other AI models, DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and open-source, making it available for developers to study and build upon. As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.”
On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it and most thought highly of it. Even a top scientist from Meta (a famous U.S. technology company) praised it, saying, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
The rise of DeepSeek has also brought its founder, Liang Wenfeng, into the spotlight. Born in 1985 in a small town in Guangdong Province. “Secrets? Like scary noises at night?” Lily asked, her eyes wide open, but a big smile spread on her face.
“Really? Interesting! Or aliens?” Sarah added with excitement.
“Maybe treasure! Shall we take on an adventure?” Emma invited.
“Great!...”
The girls raced to the house. Coming near, they noticed it was tall, with vines climbing the walls like green fingers. “Inside!” Lily led the way.
As they explored, Emma spotted a dirty silver key in the front yard. “Let’s look for a lock!” Lily suggested.
Off they went, searching everywhere and found a door at the end of the hallway. Mia tried the key. “It fits!” Pushing gently, the door creaked open, showing a dark room filled with forgotten furniture, dusty books, and mysterious boxes. “Wow, look at all these!” Sarah said with wonder.
As they stepped inside the room, Mia noticed a painting of a garden with a big, red X. “Maybe another clue!” Emma cried, “The X might be where the treasure is hidden!”
Minutes later, the girls were in the garden behind the house searching for the spot X. “Look! A strange rock!” Emma pointed. She pushed it aside and surprisingly found a wooden box with an X. Inside was a collection of old coins, a map and a piece of paper. Sarah picked it up and read aloud.
“Congratulations! You found me. Next, find the ‘Room of Shadows’ for the real treasure!”
“What do you think that means? The dark attic?” Mia guessed.
“Maybe you’re right.” Lily answered.
Back in the dusty room, they made their way up to the attic door and opened it. The attic was filled with old toys and costumes, hats, and even a mirror.
“Let’s try them on!” Lily suggested, and soon they were dancing and laughing in silly hats and dresses. Suddenly, a shining, golden key dropped out of Lily’s costume. “Will it be the last tip?” Lily cried out.
After searching, they found a round, locked box in a dark corner. “This must be ‘Room of Shadows’!” Mia cried. She turned the key, and with a soft click, the box opened. Inside lay a beautiful necklace with another note.

(2025·广东广州·二模)Imagine having a conversation with your friend, and you feel happy about it at the end of the conversation, but you are not quite sure why. Now imagine having the same conversation, but this time you feel excited because you know more about your friend. What’s the difference?
In the second case, you know exactly how you feel, which helps you deal with the situation effectively. This way of understanding and naming feelings in different situations is called emotional granularity (情绪粒度).
Life is like a box of chocolates. It often presents us with different emotions. Understanding these feelings is important for a happy life. Those with high emotional granularity can name their feelings exactly. Instead of saying “I feel happy”, they would say, “I’m happy about the deep friendship and satisfied with the moment with my friend. I value our friendship and will remember it forever.”
People with higher emotional granularity have more developed brain structure in emotional-processing areas. These areas in the brain work well together. They help us notice our emotions, name them, and react to them more correctly. Developing the ability to name feelings very well can build an emotional immune system (免疫系统) against mood disorders.
The benefits of emotional granularity are far-reaching. It helps people manage their emotions better, and then improve relationships with family and friends. Actually, emotional granularity is not only gifted but can also be nurtured. To build emotional granularity, you can learn more emotional words, keep an emotional diary, try different emotional experiences, and often play emotional role-playing games.
All in all, in real conversations, emotional granularity helps people make better decisions in many social situations. It also makes us stronger and better at dealing with stress by noticing emotional problems early.
1.Why does the writer begin the passage by comparing facts?
A.To teach us how to deal with emotions.
B.To encourage us to express our feelings.
C.To lead into the topic of emotional granularity.
D.To show the difference between feelings and expressions.
2.How do people with high emotional granularity express their feelings?
A.They share their true feelings easily.
B.They use some simple words to express their emotions.
C.They show the facts and avoid expressing their feelings.
D.They express their emotions exactly.
3.What does the underlined word “nurtured” mean in Paragraph 5?
A.Developed. B.Described.
C.Chosen. D.Checked.
4.Why does the writer write this text?

A. B. C. D.
4.How did the writer feel about learning Chinese?
A.It was challenging and tiring. B.It focused on ancient history.

Then, in what looked like a jump of joy, it rose high above the water — a thank-you to those who had worked so hard to save its life.

C.Chosen. D.Checked.
