Common Sense Media is a non-profit group in the United States that studies children's use of media
and technology. The group has done a survey asking teachers about the effects of their students' use of
entertainment media.
Entertainment media was defined as the TV shows, music, video games that students use for fun.
Many teachers said they believe media use has hurt academic performance, which in some cases is already no
very strong. Vicky Rideout wrote the report for Common Sense Media. "We have merely four in ten
students feel poor at reading,at oral communication and more than that thing the students wrongly fea
report writing. So we need to make sure that everything kids are doing is helping to accelerate progress
and not preventing it."
The survey involved 685 teachers around the country. 71% of the teachers said they believe
entertainment media has reduced students' ability to pay attention in class. And almost 6o% said it has
hurt their writing skills. Many teachers thought it has negatively affected students' ideas about boys
and girls' relationship. Many also thought it encourages aggression and anti-social behavior. Teachers
who describe themselves as uncomfortable with new technologies were more likely than other teachers
to see destructive effects of media use on social development.
But not all effects of media use were seen as bad. Almost two thirds of teachers said it also helps
the students' ability to find information quickly and efficiently. And one third said using entertainment
media has helped their students to multitask(同时执行多项任务)effectively.Only 25%said it just has
hurt them. Teachers who consider themselves as tech-savvy(精通技术的)were more likely than others
to see an advantage to students' creativity from the use of entertainment media. Vicky Rideout said
teachers accept that the way students spend their time and how they like to learn has changed
1. Vicky Rideout holds the view that entertainment media

Many people believe eating healthily is expensive-and more costly than buying junk foods. But our
new research, published in the BMC Pubic Health, shows this isn't the truth.
Most of the Australian family food budget(预算)is being spent on junk foods and drinks that are
high in fat,sugar and salt.
Less than 7%of Australians eat healthily. The Australian adults(成年人)get at least 35% of theit
energy from junk foods and drinks. As a result, two-thirds of adults(63%) and one-quarter of children
are overweight.
We used the Australian Health Survey 20l1-2013 and the suggestions of the Australian Dietary
Guidelines to model healthy diets(饮食)for a family of two adults and two children every two weeks.
We collected food prices in supermarkets and stores in high and low-socioeconomic(社会经济地位低的
areas in Brisbane, and compared the diet prices with family incomes(收人).
In both areas,a family of two adults and two children spend about 18% more on present diets than
would be required to buy healthy diets. About 58% of the food budget for present diets is spent on junk
foods,including takeaway foods(14%),and sugary drinks(4%).
In the low-socioeconomic area,a family of two adults and two children spend $ 64o. 20 every two
weeks on their present diets, but could buy a healthy diet for $ 56o, 93 every two weeks. In the high
socioeconomic area,these numbers are $ 661. 92 and $580. 01
Supermarket food prices were about 3% higher in the high-socioeconomic areas. Takeaway foods
were also relatively more expensive, but sugary drinks were priced similarly in both areas.
Present diets cost more than healthy diets, so it is surely not the price that helps to drive
preferences for unhealthy choices.
1. What did the researchers find?
A. Most Australian kids have fat problems.
B. Half Australians live on junk foods.
C. Most Australians eat unhealthily.
D. Australians have a preference for sweet foods.
2. How did the researchers get the result?
A. By doing the study online.
B. By making a comparison.
C. By carrying out interviews.
D. By asking personal questions.
3. What can we learn from Paragraph 5?
A. Australian foods are healthier
B. Healthy foods are becoming more expensive.
C. People choose junk foods for their low prices
D. A healthy diet is actually cheaper.
4. What might the following paragraph be about?
A. Why people choose junk foods.
B. The harm of junk foods.
C. How we can eat healthily.

It has been described as art by some people, but to others it's an ugly part of modern life. What is
it? Graffiti(涂鸦),of course. Look around cities in the UK today and you can see graffiti on buildings.
walls, doors and even on buses or trains that have stayed in one place for too long. But where moderr
technology creates a problem, it also finds a way to deal with it. Last week, The Weekend West was
shown around the factory of a small but successful company, Hubdean.
Hubdean's achievement is a series of special paints which are graffiti-resistant. How do they work?
It couldn't be simpler. Take any graffiti-covered surface. First,a treatment called Agproclear is used
Then, using a very hot pressure jet(压力喷嘴),this treatment is taken away and the graffiti disappears
at the same time. Now you have a clean wall. But before this clean wall can be painted on by graffiti
lovers,a new product, Agproshield, is used. This paint has a special surface which gives it two
important advantages. Firstly, spray paint(喷雾颜料)won't stick to the surface very well, and secondly.
the whole surface can be cleaned very easily, just using water. Once the surface is painted,no specialist
equipment is needed to keep the area clean and graffiti-free.
Not surprisingly,Hubdean's products are used by both local governments and private companies all
over the UK, and now orders are being received from around the world. This brings the company a
problem, however. Can they increase production to satisfy the needs? Of course, they can build a second
factory or work with a large international company to make their products. The future is looking good
for Hubdean!
1. What does the underlined word "graffiti-resistant" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Painting graffiti.
B. Keeping graffiti.
C. Preventing graffiti.
D. Changing graffiti
2. When should Agproshield be used?
A. Before Agproclear is used.
B. When the wall is still clean.
C. When Agproclear doesn't work.
D. After graffiti is painted on the wall.
3. What can we learn about Hubdean?
A. There is a good market for its products.
B. A large company is going to buy its products.
C. It is developing more new and better products.
D. Most of its business comes from private companies.
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Is Hubdean successful?
B. Is graffiti art? Of course not!
C. Hubdean a high-tech company?
D. Graffiti a problem? Iust wash it off!

Sleeping in is one of the best parts of the weekend. After a long, exhausting workweek, sometimes
all you want to do is sleep. On Friday night, you slide under the covers, smiling in anticipation. Now you
can finally catch up on your sleep. Except you can't. When you open your eyes on Saturday morning,it's
still early. If this were a weekday, you'd be up before your alarm. So what's the deal?
We hate to break it to you, but you've pretty much done this to yourself. Your body is very good at
recognizing patterns and adjusting accordingly. If you've got a 9-to-5 job, you're getting up early five
days a week. This effectively sets your body clock to wake you at a certain time each day.
Waking up may feel instantaneous, but it's actually a pretty gradual process. About an hour before
you wake, your blood pressure and body temperature rise, and so do levels of stress hormones. Minute
by minute, you become more alert until you're completely awake. You can shut off your alarm clock,bu
your body clock will just keep ticking
There's another reason that you probably don't want to think about: You're just not as young as
you used to be. We need less sleep as we get older. Babies need between 16 and 20 hours. Teenagers
should(but often don't)get nine hours a night. Younger and middle-aged adults need about eight hours
of sleep a night. In general, the older you get,the harder it is to snooze the day away
Even if you do manage to sleep in, you may never fully catch up on your sleep. If your body needs
eight hours every night and you only get six or seven from Monday to Friday, you'd have to sleep an
extra five to ten hours on Saturday to make it up, And experts say even that may not be enough.
The bottom line:Sleep when you can,and enjoy those extra weekend morning hours. Who doesn't
want a longer weekend?
审题谋划

学以致用
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
With limited space for parks and gardens, architects and city planners often find it challenging to
include greenery in neighborhoods in cities. One creative solution is to grow plants on unused areas like
walls and rooftops. It's a popular idea, and now rooftop gardens and green walls have been seen in cities
around the world.
There are many benefits(益处)of having green space. Adding gardens to rooftops or walls can
create a pleasant environment-what was once a gray cement(水泥) wall can become a colorful.
beautiful garden. The CaixaForum Madrid in Madrid,Spain, is a famous example-one of its walls is
covered with more than 15,ooo plants from over 25o different species. In other cities, green walls are
being used more functionally, to cover up construction sites and empty buildings and to beautify the
halls of office buildings.
Using plants to cover walls and rooftops can also keep cities cooler in the summer. Buildings anc
roads take in the sun's heat and hold it. Plants,on the other hand, provide an enormous amount of shade
(阴凉处). There is evidence that growing a roof or wall garden can lower a building's energy costs.
In New York City, public schools plant rooftop gardens that can reduce heating and cooling costs.
In addition to saving the school money, teachers and parents love the gardens because of their
educational value it's a fun and healthy way for their children to explore the world around them."For
the children,it's exciting when you grow something that can be eaten,” said Lauren Fontana, principal
of the New York City Department of Education.
Rooftop gardens and green walls may require a bit more effort to grow and keep. However, hard
work always brings rewards(回报),and with green space, the rewards are plentiful.
