In my life everything was going well till the time I got married.I had always been a very positive
person and I used to believe that I could overcome any challenge. But unfortunately I failed.I went
through a very difficult period.I started losing my faith in humanity for a very brief period in my life.
And I decided to quit completely and pull myself away from society.
But somewhere inside I had a deep feeling of serving humanity and needy people because in my
childhood I was very much encouraged by Mother Teresa and the work she was doing. So after 3-4
months of suffering,I decided to do community service every weekend to clear my mind and joined a
nonprofit organization which I used to support financially in my early career.
I was handed over a project to teach children in the slums (of Mumbai.I started that
activity and on the first day when I reached the location,I walked inside a village which was really far
from civilization().There I could see people living in very difficult conditions without electricity or
proper road connectivity but still enjoying their life and happy with their surroundings.
My contact()with the kids and parents has taught me valuable lessons about suffering and
learning to celebrate daily gifts of life. After that project, there was no looking back for me.I think I
celebrate my setback()every day.I have met some wonderful and beautiful souls in this journey and
they have made me believe that there are many more such souls around us and slowly and steadily one
step at a time we are making changes and touching the lives of many.

Len Collingwood,a clinical nurse specialist,retired on his 65th birthday.He told his wife,Sally,he
would“start out as an adventure cyclist.”
Four months later,he set off on a 13,000 km cycle ride from Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia to
Edinburgh, much of it roughly shadowing Marco Polo's Silk Road.No sooner had he started out than a
snowstorm hit.He hid in his tent, wearing every item of clothing he had packed.At-18 C it was too
cold to go outside to cook.He survived the next 48 hours by eating a massive bag of chocolates.
So it is a surprise to hear Collingwood say that he has never feared for his life."Never.There's
always something to be curious about,"he says.
In 2018,he rode from Edinburgh to Istanbul to earn a place in Guinness World Records."There are
very few records a man over 60 can break,he says.During the trip,he got a dozen flat tyres. But he
fixed each one."I've always been serious about purpose. If something is to be done,it is to be done
properly.People go forwards and people go backwards. The difficult bit is managing the times when
people go backwards,"he says."Don't let the moment ruin the whole thing."
He turns 71 this year.He is about to begin the 1,407 km trip to John O'Groats. It sounds tough
but he insists "it's just a matter of spinning()the wheels."Still, they don't spin on their own.His
daughter-a yoga teacher-has suggested weights to maintain muscle mass.His son,a cyclist,keeps
him up to speed on the latest technology.
Collingwood is planning new rides in France next year, and beyond that hopes "to spread my wings
further. There is peace on a bicycle,"he says."The joy is the actual doing of the activity.Going further
means you're just doing more of something you enjoy."
1.What happened to Collingwood when his first journey had just started?

Scientists say only enlarging the world's nature reserve to help protect plants and animals may be
useless. The main reason is that levels of human activity are rising in and around the nature reserves. In
fact, recognizing spaces as protected areas is not reducing human activity there.
The researchers found that a lack of money to pay for land conservation (is affecting
conservation efforts. And it is a lack of communication between people who live in protected natural
areas and outsiders.About 17 percent of the world is within protected areas, including the national
parks, nature reserves and wilderness areas.Protected areas are important for supporting environments
with many different kinds of plants and animals.
The researchers again found increasing human activity in most protected areas in every country.
However, they said that human activity appeared to be more of a problem in nations with fewer roads
and lower life standards on the Human Development Index().The index uses information about
life length, education and earnings to grade countries on human development.
Across the northern Australia, protected areas often proved effective at slowing human activity
when compared with unprotected areas. But in South America,Southeast Asia and African countries,
pressure from human activity inside protected areas was higher.
Experts say governments need to provide fund support to help protected areas.Simply recognizing
a place as a protected area can't be the beginning and the end of a conservation effort.Working with
local people to take efforts is also important. If they're not partners in the protected areas, then wildlife
conservation is much more difficult.
1.What are protected areas mainly affected by according to the text?
A.Human activity.
B.Climate change.
C.Population growth.
D.Environmental pollution.
2.What's the Human Development Index used to do?
A.Record more roads in the world.
B.Improve education in all countries.
C.Grade countries on human development.
D.Lead more people to make more money.
3.What can be the best title for the text?
A.People May Cause Harm to Plants and Animals
B.Nature Reserves May Not Protect Wildlife Safely
C.Nature Reserves in the World Should Be Increased
D.Local People Should Focus on the Natural Environment

Thanks to Earth,we have fresh air to breathe, clean water to drink and warm sunshine to enjoy.
But it seems that we may have taken these things for granted and not realized that our planet is getting
"sick".1 More than 15,000 scientists around the world have written a letter to warn about
environmental challenges.
Among those environmental challenges, climate change sits at the top.Global average temperatures
have risen by more than 0.5C since 1992.2 It means that heat waves would last around a third
longer and rainstorms would be about a third more violent if we take no action. The increase in sea
levels would also be much higher.Countries like Singapore and Tokyo that are at low altitudes()
may be covered by the ocean in the future.
3 It's getting harder to get fresh water.Ocean pollution has become serious.Since 1992,the
human population has grown by 2 billion, while the populations of all other animals have dropped by
nearly 30 percent.
Scientists say that we are experiencing the sixth mass extinction(物种大灭绝)in history.More than
two-thirds of the world's wildlife could be gone by the end of the decade if action isn't taken soon.4
However,we have made some progress by making the hole in the ozone()layer smaller. That's
because we gradually stopped using chemicals that can break down ozone,a gas that protects Earth.
5
A.A half-degree temperature rise is a big deal.
B.But this is not the only problem people are facing.
C.In fact, scientists have recently given us a warning.
D.Scientists also point out that global warming will continue for centuries.
E.All the countries in the world should take action on behalf of future generations.
F.The Amur leopard and cross river gorilla are some of the most endangered animals.
G.This progress shows that we can make positive changes when we act,the letter says.
