The Secret Recipe of My Life
Life is like cooking―the right recipes make all the difference. After going through some tough times, I’ve created my special recipe for happiness with three key ingredients: staying positive, keeping curious, and being kind.
I first tried this recipe last winter when I failed a math test. Instead of giving up, I chose to stay positive and study harder. Then I started being more curious―not just memorizing answers, but really understanding why. Finally, when I helped my friend who was also struggling, we both improved together.
Now I follow this recipe every day. Staying positive helps me face challenges. Being curious makes learning more interesting. And kindness creates wonderful friendships. These simple ingredients have completely changed my school life.
Just like baking needs the right steps, life needs the right attitude. My recipe proves that small changes can make a big difference!

Miss Martha had a little bakery (面包店) on the street corner and two thousand dollars in the bank. This bakery attracted many customers daily. Among them, one interested Martha a lot. He was a quiet, middle-aged man wearing glasses. ① His clothes were always patched (缝补的). But he looked tidy and had very good manners. He came in two or three times a week. He always bought two loaves of stale (不新鲜的) bread. Fresh bread was five cents a loaf, while stale loaves were two for five.
②
Once, while serving him, she saw a red and brown mark on his fingers. ③ She was sure he was an artist and very poor. No doubt he lived in an attic (阁楼), where he painted pictures, ate stale bread and thought of the good things to eat. To check if she was right, she took out a painting and put it behind the counter. No artist could fail to notice it. ④
Two days later, the customer came in. “Two loaves of stale bread, please.” “OK.”
“You have a fine picture here, madam.”
“Yes?” said Miss Martha, pleased with her cleverness. “Do you think it is good?”
“The palace,” he said, “is not in good drawing. The perspective (透视画法) of it is not true.”
Yes, he must be an artist. How gently his eyes shone behind his glasses! To be able to judge perspective at a quick look―and to live on stale bread! But talented people often have to go through difficulties before they succeed.
What a thing it would be for art and perspective if a genius (天才) were supported by two thousand dollars in the bank, a bakery and a sympathetic heart―But these were daydreams.
He kept on buying stale bread, never a cake, never a pie. She thought he began to look thinner and lose heart. She wanted to offer something good to him, but she was afraid of hurting him. She knew the pride of artists.

Thinking outside the box is a metaphor (隐喻) often used to describe different, or creative thinking. It shows up in simple things like using paper to make “planes” instead of just writing on it―for example.
The term was first used in 1975 by a company. The Human Resource (HR) offered a 9-dot puzzle to the interviewees who were asked to connect all the dots
9-dot puzzle
with only 4 lines. This task actually requires some lateral thinking (跨界思维), so the HR encouraged
the interviewees to “think outside the box”. In this case, they needed to look beyond the box and create something else.
To draw those 4 lines, you have to first use up all the ways within the box. Only then can you realize that the problem is the box itself. You need to understand the problem, then solve it.
To think outside the box, you must look beyond a narrow view. Otherwise (否则的话), you wouldn’t find the answer. Thinking outside the box can also force you to widen your horizon. Then you will focus more on opportunities and the willingness to take risks, which encourages people to grow. When we stay in our comfort zone (舒适地带), taking risks, growing, and challenging the normal seem much more frightening. So try to become an effective leader, or a team member.
Whatever you do, think twice: First in the box, then outside the box. Outside-the-box thinking often breaks the routines (常规) and may sound ridiculous (荒谬的). But without thinking outside the box, these people, like Thomas Edison, Isaac Newton, wouldn’t have changed the world in the way they did. Just allow yourself to start thinking outside the box. You’ll be glad you did.
52. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Connecting all the dots with only 4 lines. B. Thinking outside the box.
C. Taking part in the job interview. D. Taking risks all the time.
53. Which is the right answer to solving the 9-dot puzzle according to the passage?
A. B. C. D.

①On a Sunday morning, your best friend calls you to ask for help. You gladly show up and help him. Then he hands you some money, saying “Thanks for your help.” The situation suddenly feels embarrassing.
②Why doesn’t direct pay fit the situation? According to Dan Ariely, we live in two worlds―one ruled by social norms (规范), and the other by market norms. Social norms include the friendly requests that people make to one another and immediate payback (回报) is not needed. While in the second
world, people work for money and get what they pay for. Market relationships are not necessarily bad, but they do suggest some benefits and immediate payments.
③When we keep social norms or market norms on their own way, things move smoothly. However, when they run into each other, the results are not satisfying.
④This is proved by an experiment made by Ariely in an American school. Some students always arrived late for school, so fines (罚款) were introduced. However, this made more students late. Before the fine, students felt sorry for interrupting (打扰) the class and this feeling made them feel forced to arrive on time in the future. But the fine took the place of this social norm. Students felt they were allowed to be late as long as they paid. Even after the fine was removed (撤销), the students didn’t return to social norms and the number of late students didn’t drop. The result showed a fact: when a
social norm runs into a market norm, the social norm goes away and seldom returns.
⑤Then, do market norms always have a bigger influence than social norms? Ariely did another experiment by paying people $5 (Group 1) or $0.50 (Group 2) for running circles for five minutes. And to Group 3, he introduced the task as a social request, just asking them for help. The results showed that Group 1 ran about 159 circles, and Group 2 about 101 circles. But Group 3 who were paid nothing ran 168 circles. When people are paid, motivation (动力) rises as pay rises, but people work even harder under social norms than for money. Why? Because people love to feel that they help others.
⑥Money is the most expensive way to inspire people, but it will take you only so far―social norms are the forces that can make a difference in the long run.
56. What did the school fine experiment show?
A. Fines successfully reduced students’ lateness.

He often stays up late to finish tasks but still feels he’s falling behind. “I join too many clubs and lessons to please my parents.” Alex said. “But I have no time to relax or even sleep. Yesterday I forgot to hand in my math homework because I was preparing for a speech contest!”
How to manage time wisely?
Dr. Green
a psychologist
Many students have problems with time management. They always feel hard to complete all the tasks well in limited time. The key to solving this problem is not to do more, but to do what truly matters. Start by listing your priorities (优先级) and cutting out unnecessary tasks. They can help you save a lot of time you can use to relax.

I use the “Pomodoro Technique”: study 25 minutes, rest 5 minutes. This keeps me focused. After a long period of working or studying, our brains need to have a rest for a while. Therefore, we need to schedule rest time. Also, I often say “no” to those activities that are not useful for helping me achieve my goals.

Effective (有效的) time management requires clear plans. Try breaking tasks into smaller steps and set deadlines for each. For example, if you plan to finish a novel with 300 pages in one month. You can make yourself finish 10 pages every day in 30 minutes before you go to bed. It’s easier to succeed in finishing the task by doing this. Besides, use apps like calendar or to-do lists. Remember, rest is part of success.
65. Does Alex often stay up late to finish tasks?
66. Why did Alex forget to hand in his math homework yesterday?
67. According to the passage, how can Alex solve his problem?

Air pollution! Plastic waste! Desertification (沙漠化)! Such things happen everywhere on the planet, which is terrifying. But actually, such big problems can be solved by small steps.
First, remember to turn off lights and unused devices (设备) when leaving a room. An interesting fact is that the energy saved by unplugging a phone charger (取下手机充电器) can be used to power a lamp for 3 hours. Also, try to take shorter showers and fix leaking taps (漏水的水龙头) as soon as possible.
Second, sort and recycle trash. Separate paper, plastic, and glass before throwing them away. Besides, using items again, like bottles or bags, also cuts down trash. For example, bring a water bottle you can use again to school instead of buying plastic ones.
Moreover, protect green spaces. Planting trees or growing flowers at home makes the air cleaner. Joining community clean-up activities, such as picking up rubbish in parks, keeps our surroundings tidy. Lastly, it’s not enough to depend on just one person to make a difference. Sharing ideas that are good for the environment with friends and family and starting a “Green Club” at school to organize monthly clean-up events are effective ways to get more attention and actions. Even small changes, like
using cloth bags, can encourage others.
Remember, Earth is our only home. If every student in our city follows these steps, it is believed that we can create a healthier and greener world in the future. Let’s start now!
