Young Chinese Baker Rocks “Bread Olympics”
A dancing lion, a lovely panda and other Chinese symbols in interesting shapes—when these are grouped together, what kind of magic can happen? This one-meter-high bread was out of the hands of Gong Xin, a Chinese baker who won the first place in the ninth World Bread Competition, also known as “the Bread Olympic Games”, making him the first ever Chinese champion (冠军) of this event. Many foreigners say it is the same as a foreigner taking the first place in a dumpling-making competition in China.
After graduating from school, Gong began to learn to make bread. He worked in a bakery. Soon, he found that it could not help realize his dream because he wished to become a top baker. He then left to further his bread-making skills in a famous school. The journey of growing from a common baker to a skilled one took him only two years, but behind the rapid progress were many hours of sweating (汗水) in his free time. For Gong, hard work had produced fantastic skills, but he kept wondering how he could take those skills to the next level, which was the reason why he took part in the competition.
As a well-known international bakery competition, the World Bread Competition requires each competitor to make different types of healthy bread with creative ideas. Gong tried a lot day in, day out, finally making a name for himself.
A young baker from a small town has grown into a world champion. “Challenges are everywhere. One should have more practice, patience and a deep love for the job. More communication and exchanges about the ideas especially expressing the traditional Chinese culture with other people are also necessary,” he said, adding that when he watched people enjoying and admiring his bread, he got a strong feeling of satisfaction. That is the force to keep him moving forward.
34. What did Gong Xin win?
A. A dancing competition.
B. The first place in the World Bread Competition.
C. A panda-raising competition.
35. Why did Gong Xin go to a famous school?
A. Because he didn't like the bakery.
B. Because he wanted to improve his bread-making skills.
C. Because the school was nearer to his home.
36. What do competitors need to do in the World Bread Competition?
A. Make only big bread.
B. Make sweet bread.
C. Make different kinds of healthy bread with new ideas.

It was December and the snow was falling quietly outside. The four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, were sitting around the fire. They were knitting (编织) socks for soldiers (士兵). There was a war and everyone had to help. The festival was coming, but they wouldn’t get any presents from their mother, Mrs. March.
“We’ve got Father and Mother, and each other,” said Beth. They looked happy when hearing this. Then Jo said, “But it is a pity that our father is far away with the soldiers.”
Nobody spoke for a minute, and then Meg said, “Mother says our men are at war and we mustn’t spend money for pleasure. That’s why we can’t have presents this year.”
Although they would have no presents, they each had a dollar. They began to share what they wanted to buy. Jo would like to buy a book for herself because she was a book lover. Beth planned to spend hers on new music. She played the piano and loved singing. Amy would like a nice box of drawing pencils, for she wanted to be an artist.
Jo thought Mother didn’t say anything about their money and she wouldn’t wish them to give up anything. They worked hard so they should buy what they wanted each and had a little fun. It was true. The two elder sisters had jobs.
Just then the clock struck (击) six. Beth stood up and put her mother’s slippers near the fire to warm.
“Those slippers are very old,” said Jo. “Mother needs some new ones.”
“I can buy a pair for her with my own dollars,” said Beth.
“No, I’m the oldest,” Meg said. “I want to buy the slippers for her.”
“I have an idea,” said Beth. “Don’t buy presents for ourselves. Get some for Mother instead.” Her sisters thought that was a very good idea.

A new study finds that getting a family dog is connected with a big jump in physical activity in young kids, especially in young girls.
In the study. Australian researchers followed 600 children over a three-year period, starting at preschool age. They studied the kids’ physical activity and monitored (监测) things like how fast, long and intensely (剧烈地) they moved. They also surveyed parents about their children’s activities and whether they had a family dog.
Half of the children didn’t have a dog. About 204 kids had a dog the whole time. And 58 kids got a dog during the study period, and sadly, 31 kids lost their dogs. That created a natural experiment for researchers to see how owning a dog influenced the kids’ activity levels.
“What we found is that adding a dog to the family increased young girls’ physical activity by 52 minutes a day, or almost an hour,” said Emma Adams, who led the study. “It could make a meaningful difference to their health and happiness.” However, girls whose dogs died during the study had a big drop in their daily physical activity—by 62 minutes a day.
“This new study is exciting because it’s the first that I’ve seen to follow kids over time,” said Katie Potter, a professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. “Though the body of the study is limited, other studies have also suggested that dogs may influence girls’ activity levels. But we’re not sure how.” Potter said. “If researchers can find ways to use dogs to get and keep girls moving more, that could have a real influence on public health,” she added.
42. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the background and main findings of the study.
B. To describe the specific methods used in the study.
C. To summarize the results of the study.
43. According to the study, how much did young girls’ physical activity increase per day after getting a family dog?
A. 30 minutes B. 52 minutes C. 62 minutes
44. In the fourth paragraph, the underlined word “drop” most likely means: ______.
A. Increase B. Decrease C. Stay the same
45. What is Katie Potter’s attitude towards the study?
A. She is skeptical of the study’s findings.
B. She is neutral about the study’s findings.
C. She is positive about the study’s findings.
【答案】42. A 43. B 44. B 45. C

The next morning, the old man asked James how his night went. James said sadly, “I didn’t sleep at all. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get all the camels to sit together. Even if I managed to get some camels to sit on one side, a few others would stand on the other side.”
“That’s true. As noticed last night, some camels sat down on their own, while others required some effort, and yet many camels did not sit even after lots of effort. If you had come back later, you would have seen that some of the camels, even though they didn’t sit at first, finally sat down on their own,” the old man said.
James nodded. The old man continued, “Problems are just like camels—some problems get solved by themselves, some get solved when you put in some effort, and some do not get solved even after you have tried your best. Leave such problems to time. At the right time, these problems themselves will come to an end.”
James felt a sense of understanding. What the old man told him completely changed his opinions to life’s challenges.

It can be really embarrassing if someone sees you talking to yourself. But don’t feel bad about it! Talking to yourself actually has a lot of advantages.
You probably know that thinking is good for the brain. It helps us do things like making plans and managing our feelings. Talking to yourself loud is like showing this quiet inner (内在) speech. It can help us do better in different areas like school, sports and work.
Talking to yourself, especially in the third person, can help us manage bad feelings. “Talking to yourself in the third person is like giving yourself advice,” said Jason Moser, a professor (教授) from Michigan State University, US. Moser uses himself in an example. He does not like flying, but he has to fly often for his work. So when he is feeling nervous or afraid during a flight (航班), he talks to himself. “Well, you know, Jason knows air travel is very safe. And Jason has been on thousands of flights.” This can help us to see things from a different aspect (角度), especially when we’re feeling sad or angry.
When encouragement comes from oneself, it adds to self-confidence. A study invited 72 tennis players to take part in some matches. Researchers (调查者) put the players into two groups: one group that said nothing while playing, and the other that talked to themselves while playing. They found that the self-talkers showed more confidence and played better than those in the silent group.
Self-talk also helps to improve memory. Researchers tested four different ways to memorize things: reading silently, reading aloud, listening to someone else read and listening to a recording of oneself reading. Those who read out loud recalled the information the best, researchers said in their study. It’s because the information will probably become a long-term memory if it is said out loud.
Advantage of Talking to Oneself
Helps in Daily Tasks
Talking aloud to oneself is similar to showing inner thoughts. It can help us in making plans and ____66____ feelings, and thus helps people perform better in school, sports and work.

Adds to Self-confidence
A study on 72 tennis players was carried out. The players were divided into two groups. The group that talked to themselves while playing showed more confidence and ____69____ better than the silent group.

A. Make only big bread.
B. Make sweet bread.
C. Make different kinds of healthy bread with new ideas.
37. What can we learn from Gong Xin?

B. We should give up our dreams easily.
C. Hard work and love for the job are important.

In a village near a desert lived a young and successful businessman; named James. But he often felt unhappy because of the endless challenges he faced.
One day, a wise old man came to the village with 100 camels. James went to see him and said, “I always have business worries, family troubles and health problems. Please tell me how to make them disappear.” The old man smiled and said, “I’ll give you an answer tomorrow morning. But first, can you do me a favor?” James agreed. The old man asked him to take care of the 100 camels for the night, making sure that they all sat down and rested before he could go to sleep.
The next morning, the old man asked James how his night went. James said sadly, “I didn’t sleep at all. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get all the camels to sit together. Even if I managed to get some camels to sit on one side, a few others would stand on the other side.”
“That’s true. As noticed last night some camels sat down on their own, while others required some effort, and yet many camels did not sit even after lots of effort.

第一节 信息归纳(共5小题,每小题1分,满分5分)
It can be really embarrassing if someone sees you talking to yourself. But don’t feel bad about it! Talking to yourself actually has a lot of advantages.
You probably know that thinking is good for the brain. It helps us do things like making plans and managing our feelings. Talking to yourself loud is like showing this quiet inner (内在的) speech.
