B Book clubs are no longer limited to living rooms, and bookstores offer much more than just books with a whole new place opening up for gatherings and a wide range of choices centered around reading. When entering BookBar on Tennyson Street, shoppers are greeted by a lovely smell of coffee and small plates. Nearly nine years ago, Nicole Sullivan, a great lover of books, hoped she could attend a book club meeting anywhere besides someone’s living room. From that thought, BookBar was born. The bookstore now also sees local teenagers’ meetings and study. “Now I see the future of bookstores is community bookstores,” Sullivan says. Some bookstores, like The Hermitage Bookshop in the Cherry Creek area of Denver, stick to a more traditional model, however. Robert Topp has owned his book business for 50 years, making it one of the independent bookstores having the longest history in the city. His store features collections, out-of-print books, antiquarian books, magazines and art and 20% of the goods are considered collectible. Topp originally thought his customers would grow old with him, but instead, he has seen something different. “On Saturdays, almost everyone in the bookstore is under 40,” he said. He also said one misconception about young readers is that they only read romances and horror. Topp thought people are generally too hard on them. “Too many people have the thought out of unconscious prejudice,” he explained. “Observing carefully, you’ll find their reading preferences various and positive.” After devoting nearly 30 years to reading to children in public schools, Topp founded Read Me a Story, Ink providing stories to listen to, stories to read, and book recommendations. Besides, he also has strong online bookselling business. “Many bookstores may be under financial pressure, but with the creative ideas, we can turn things around,” he said. 4. Why did Sullivan start BookBar? A. To pursue her passion for reading. B. To create a community store for local people. C. To make her study convenient. D. To have a public space for book club meetings. 5. What can be learned about The Hermitage Bookshop? A. It’s home to many rare books. B. It’s the oldest bookstore in Denver. C. It attracts mainly old readers. D. It faces competition from online sellers. 6. What’s Topp’s attitude to young people’s reading preference? A Worried. B. Optimistic. C. Surprised. D. Critical. 7 What does the text mainly talk about? A. Transformation of book businesses is urgent. B. Creative activities attract people to books. C. Bookstores adopt new ways to reach readers. D. Bookstores unite more young customers. C Using needles to deliver drugs has been common for more than a century. The past hundred years have seen all manner of medical advances, from life-saving medicine and X-rays to mRNA vaccines (疫苗) and special cancer treatments. Yet the needle has stayed mostly unchanged. Although now available in a variety of different sizes, it remains a hollow (having a hole or empty space inside), pointy tube. With luck, that may soon change. As Yichi Ma, a scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues outlined in a review paper, researchers around the world are looking for ways to ease the passage of needles into the skin. Many have been inspired by nature. The team got their idea from mosquitoes, which manage to get their blood meals without causing great pain to people. One reason is that the insects use painkilling chemicals when they first puncture (刺穿) the skin. But there is another reason. The point of a mosquito’s saw-like proboscis (锯齿状的喙) is softer at its tip. The insect makes the skin of its target tight before biting, and shakes its proboscis as it pushes the proboscis in. All of this helps reduce the force needed to puncture the skin. One paper, published in 2020, found that a mosquito-inspired needle required 27% less puncturing force than an ordinary one. And less force means less pain. Mosquito-inspired needles might also be useful for delicate procedures such as biopsies (the examination of tissue taken from a living body). A paper from the University of Michigan, also published in 2020, found that scientists could improve biopsies of tissue in some body organs. The lower force led to less movement of the organ itself, ensuring that the needles were guided accurately to the area that needed sampling. For now, such devices remain limited to labs. But there is a big market for better needles. According to WHO, around 16 billion were given in 2018. With one person in four saying they suffer from a fear of needles, it means the savings on stickers and sweets for the brave souls who roll up their sleeves would be considerable. 8. What can we infer about needles from Paragraph 1? A. Their importance has been ignored for long. B. They fall behind other medical innovations. C. Their size remains the same for over a century. D. They have a poor source of supply for decades. 9. What primarily motivates researchers to improve the needle design? A. Copying the structure of the mosquito’s proboscis. B. Enhancing the drug delivery mechanism. C. Reducing patients’ discomfort during injection. D. Making needles more flexible and adaptable. 10. How does a mosquito-inspired needle strengthen biopsy procedures according to the test? A. By making the target skin tight. B. By minimizing organ movement during sampling. C. By making the needle tip sharper. D. By lessening patients’ anxiety during the operation. 11. What does the underlined figure “16 billion” primarily refer to in the last paragraph? A. The number of people with a fear of needles. B. The potential market size for improved needles. C. The number of injections administered in 2018. D. The number of needle innovations by WHO in 2018. D In 1999, David Dunning and Justin Kruger did a series of studies evaluating people’s competence in certain areas, including grammar, humor and logic. The people in the studies were asked to evaluate their own abilities in each area. Dunning and Kruger found that people who scored low on the tests have the tendency to overestimate their abilities, indicating that people who lack skills tend to lack the ability to realize their shortcomings. This principle has become known as the Dunning-Kruger effect. It occurs because only when people have skills in a given area are they equipped to evaluate their own skills. Admittedly, most people are overconfident in their abilities. They want to believe that they are more capable, knowledgeable and even superior to others, and when someone really wants something to be true, it can be hard for them to admit that it isn’t. By the way, the opposite of the Dunning-Kruger effect also happens: capable people have a more accurate view of their own abilities, and sometimes they even underestimate themselves. It’s tempting to think of the Dunning-Kruger effect as a problem. People may even laugh at those who think themselves more competent than they truly are, but everyone has areas where they lack competence, and the Dunning-Kruger effect means they may be relatively bad at self-evaluation in those areas. Even if someone is very intelligent in general, there are still things they don’t know much about. Expertise in one area cannot always be transferred to other areas. That’s why it’s important to keep digging for information even when you think you’ve found answers. It can also be helpful to check your ideas with other people. Receiving negative feedback can hurt, but if you’re willing to listen, it can help you grow. Even just keeping in mind that the Dunning-Kruger effect exists can help you stay modest, accept criticism and, thus, keep learning throughout your life. 12. What did Dunning and Kruger find in their research? A. Skilled people are usually more humorous and logical. B. Unskilled people tend to think too much of themselves. C. Self-evaluation makes people more logical in some areas. D. Knowledgeable people sometimes think they are superior to others. 13. What does the author think of the Dunning-Kruger effect? A. Universal. B. Problematic. C. Complicated. D. Controversial. 14. What can we do to avoid the Dunning-Kruger effect according to the text? A. Evaluate yourself on a regular basis. B. Make friends with intelligent individuals. C. Be yourself and ignore negative feedback. D. Remain humble and eager for knowledge. 15. Where is this passage probably from? A. A research paper. B. A biology textbook. C. A psychology journal. D. A scientific report. Achieving High Productivity Productivity is the base of both personal and professional success. For over three decades, he filled the lecture halls with tales of ancient civilizations, his booming voice and animated gestures bringing history to life. But his impact stretched far beyond textbooks and lecture slides. Every student knew Professor Allen, not just for his impressive knowledge, but for the way he made everyone feel valued. He remembered names effortlessly, took the time to ask about students’ families, and never hesitated to lend an ear to those struggling with coursework or life. His office door was always open, a safe place where students could find advice, a cup of tea, or simply a quiet place to gather their thoughts. Despite the ever-growing use of digital learning and online resources, students still flocked to his in-person lectures, seeking the wisdom and warmth that no screen could provide. He walked the campus paths like an old friend, stopping to chat with students about their aspirations, offering words of encouragement, or recommending books tailored to their interests. He had a particular fondness for mentoring students who felt lost, reminding them that history had a place for everyone — just as they had a place at the university. One semester, an anonymous (匿名的) student began leaving handwritten notes outside his office. The notes contained historical riddles — cleverly worded puzzles that referenced events from world history. Interested, Professor Allen responded by posting his own riddles in return, turning the exchange into a quiet game between teacher and mystery student. On the eve of his retirement, Professor Allen found another note. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A young woman hesitantly approached him. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 2025年河北昌黎第一中学高三毕业班考前最后一卷 英语 时间:120分钟 满分150分 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 根据第二段中“Nearly nine years ago, Nicole Sullivan, a great lover of books, hoped she could attend a book club meeting anywhere besides someone’s living room. From that thought, BookBar was born.(近九年前,酷爱读书的Nicole Sullivan希望能在除了别人客厅以外的任何地方参加读书俱乐部的会议。出于这个想法,BookBar诞生了)”可知,Sullivan创办BookBar是为了给读书俱乐部提供一个公共空间进行聚会。故选D。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“His store features collections, out-of-print books, antiquarian books, magazines and art and 20% of the goods are considered collectible.(他的书店以收藏、绝版书、古董书、杂志和艺术品为特色,其中20%的商品被视为收藏品)”可知,The Hermitage Bookshop有很多珍稀书籍。故选A。 根据第四段中““Too many people have the thought out of unconscious prejudice,” he explained. “Observing carefully, you’ll find their reading preferences various and positive.”(他解释道:“太多人出于无意识的偏见而持有这样的想法。但仔细观察,你会发现他们的阅读偏好是多种多样且积极向上的”)”可推知,Topp对年轻人的阅读偏好持乐观态度。故选B。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,再根据第二段的“When entering BookBar on Tennyson Street, shoppers are greeted by a lovely smell of coffee and small plates. Nearly nine years ago, Nicole Sullivan, a great lover of books, hoped she could attend a book club meeting anywhere besides someone’s living room. From that thought, BookBar was born. The bookstore now also sees local teenagers’ meetings and study. “Now I see the future of bookstores is community bookstores,” Sullivan says.(当顾客踏入位于Tennyson街的BookBar时,迎面而来的是一股咖啡的诱人香气以及小食的精致风味。 因此,C选项“Bookstores adopt new ways to reach readers.(书店采用新方式来吸引读者)”最符合文章主旨。故选C。 C Using needles to deliver drugs has been common for more than a century. B 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段的句子“The past hundred years have seen all manner of medical advances, from life-saving medicine and X-rays to mRNA vaccines and special cancer treatments. Yet the needle has stayed mostly unchanged. Although now available in a variety of different sizes, it remains a hollow (having a hole or empty space inside), pointy tube.(在过去的一百年里,医学取得了各种各样的进步,从拯救生命的药物和x射线到mRNA疫苗和特殊的癌症治疗。然而针头基本没有改变。虽然现在有各种不同的尺寸,它仍然是一个中空的(有一个孔或空的空间),尖管。)”可知,过去一百年医学有了各种进步,但针头大多保持不变。这意味着针头的发展落后于其他医学创新。故选B项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段的句子“As Yichi Ma, a scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues outlined in a review paper, researchers around the world are looking for ways to ease the passage of needles into the skin.(正如加州大学伯克利分校的科学家Yichi Ma及其同事在一篇综述论文中所述,全球研究人员正在探索各种方法,以减轻针头刺入皮肤时的阻力与不适。)”以及第四段“One paper, published in 2020, found that a mosquito - inspired needle required 27% less puncturing force than an ordinary one. And less force means less pain(2020年发表的一篇论文指出,一种受蚊子口器启发的针头比普通针头的穿刺力减少了27%,而更小的穿刺力意味着更低的疼痛感。)” 根据第五段“Mosquito-inspired needles might also be useful for delicate procedures such as biopsies (the examination of tissue taken from a living body). A paper from the University of Michigan, also published in 2020, found that scientists could improve biopsies of tissue in some body organs. The lower force led to less movement of the organ itself, ensuring that the needles were guided accurately to the area that needed sampling.(受蚊子启发的针头可能也适用于活检(从活体提取组织的检查)等精细手术。密歇根大学2020年发表的一项研究表明,这种针头能优化某些人体器官的活检效果:其施加的较小作用力可减少器官位移,从而确保针头精准到达需采样区域。)”可知,受蚊子启发的针头通过在取样过程中减少器官的移动,确保针头准确到达需要取样的区域,从而加强活检程序。故选B项。 【11题详解】 词句猜测题。根据最后一段划线词句“According to WHO, around 16 billion were given in 2018.(根据世界卫生组织的数据,2018年大约有160亿)”以及前文“For now, such devices remain limited to labs. But there is a big market for better needles.(目前,这类设备仍局限于实验室。但是更好的针头有很大的市场。)”提到有对更好针头的大市场需求可知,这里的160亿指的是2018年进行的注射次数,也就意味着改进针头有很大的潜在市场。故选C项。 D In 1999, David Dunning and Justin Kruger did a series of studies evaluating people’s competence in certain areas, including grammar, humor and logic. 12. B 13. A 14. D 15. For over three decades he filled the lecture halls with tales of ancient civilizations, his booming voice and animated gestures bringing history to life. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 On the eve of his retirement, Professor Allen found another note. This one was different. Instead of a riddle, it contained a beautifully drawn ancient Egyptian cartouche, framing the hieroglyphic symbols for “Wisdom,” “Heart,” and “Eternity.” Below it, written in the familiar hand, was a simple message: “Your lessons echo beyond the classroom walls. Thank you for being our constant guide. With deepest gratitude, A Grateful Student.” A young woman hesitantly approached him. Her eyes were slightly red, and her voice trembled with emotion. “Professor Allen,” she began, “I was the one who left the notes. I was so lost when I started here, but your kindness and those riddles… they made me feel seen and helped me find my passion for history.” She paused, taking a deep breath. “You taught us that history isn’t just about the past; it’s about the connections we make. You connected with all of us. Thank you… for everything.” A warm smile spread across Professor Allen’s face, his own eyes glistening. In that moment, he saw the lasting impact of his life’s work. 词汇激活 行为类 ①包含:contain/include ②颤抖:tremble/shiver ③看到:see/catch sight of 情绪类 ①感激:gratitude/thankfulness ②热情:passion/enthusiasm 【点睛】[高分句型1] I was the one who left the notes.(运用了who引导定语从句) [高分句型2] You taught us that history isn’t just about the past; it’s about the connections we make.(运用了that引导宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
