Have you ever ridden a roller coaster? If so, you probably couldn’t help screaming as it moved along at top speed. What an exciting way to have a great time!
For centuries, people have been drawn to the excitement of roller coasters. The story of these amazing rides started in Russia. More than 300 years ago, during winter festivals, Russians created slides using wood and ice. They continuously watered ramps made of wood, turning them into huge, slippery (滑溜的) ice slides. Then, they carved ice seats to make sleds that could glide down these slides. Finally, they climbed a set of stairs at the back of the slides. This was the very beginning of roller coasters.
As time passed, people wanted to enjoy sliding throughout the year. In 1817, a company in Paris started developing a system to keep cars locked on the track. That’s when the first real roller coaster was born.
In 1884, the Switchback Railway opened at Coney Island in New York. To take a ride, people had to climb a tall tower. At the top, they boarded a small train that rushed down a 200-meter slope (斜坡). Once at the bottom, riders got off, and the driver took the train back to the top. It wasn’t that exciting since its highest speed was only 10 kilometers per hour.
Nowadays, roller coasters come in all kinds of designs. One of the fastest is the Top Thrill Dragster in Cedar Point, Ohio, which can reach speeds of 190 kilometers per hour. But who knows? Sooner or later, even faster and more exciting roller coasters will surely hit the scene.

Have you ever heard the phrase “You never get another chance to make a first impression (印象)?” It may sound like an unusual piece of advice, but it is true that the first impression someone has of you will probably influence how he treats you or reacts to you in the future.

When you meet someone for the first time, by the time you have stated your name or shaken hands, the other person has already formed an opinion about the kind of person you are.

However, the most important tool for making a good first impression is your face. Smiling, being responsive, and looking like you are happy will always leave a positive impression on people, especially those who do not know you. Furthermore, smiling and being in a positive mood helps you to know and get a better understanding of new things. This means that you can possibly be friendlier to people you do not know and be more creative and able to solve problems more quickly. So if you ever need a reason to be happy, think about the wonderful people you might meet and impress with a cheerful smile.
If you pay attention to people around us, you will find a lot of successful cases like this.

【答案】例文
Dear Tina,
I’d love to share some special cultural symbols in my hometown.
One of the most important traditions here is celebrating the Spring Festival. Families get together to clean their homes, put up red couplets on doors with blessings, and enjoy a big family dinner on New Year’s Eve. My favorite part is making dumplings with my grandparents. We hide coins in some dumplings, and whoever bites into one is said to have good luck all year!
Another tradition is Mid-Autumn Festival. We eat moon cakes and enjoy the full moon, which means family unity. Last year, my little sister and I carried lanterns like rabbits to a park, I think it is magical!
I’m proud of these traditions because they connect me to my family and history. What about your hometown traditions? I’d love to hear about them!

What is even more interesting is that the brain takes in all the information to create that first impression in about three seconds. When you meet someone for the first time by the time you have stated your name or shaken hands, the other person has already formed an opinion about the kind of person you are.
So how do you make a good first impression? All things grown-ups tell you such as being polite and being well-dressed are very important. However, the most important tool for making a good first impression is your face. Smiling, being responsive, and looking like you are happy will always leave a positive impression on people, especially those who do not know you. Most people, generally speaking, are ready to smile back when they are smiled at.
