The Three Gorges Dam (三峡大坝) lying on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province, is one of the largest and most amazing engineering projects in the world. It stands proudly between the beautiful mountains of Xiling Gorge, showing the wisdom and hard work of the Chinese people.
The Yangtze River, China’s longest river, often caused serious floods in the past, bringing disasters to millions of people. To solve this problem and create clean energy, the Chinese government decided to build a huge dam.
People began to build the Three Gorges Dam in 1994. And it took over 12 years to complete. Thousands of workers used modern machines and technology to make this dream come true. They moved mountains, changed the river’s path (路径) to build the dam, which is about 2.3 kilometers long and 185 meters high—as tall as a 60-story building!
Today, the dam plays a key role in China. It has greatly reduced flood risks, protecting cities and farmlands. The dam’s power stations produce clean electricity for millions of homes and factories, helping reduce air pollution. Its connected vessel system (连通器系统) helps ships pass. Ships enter a lock (水闸), and gates close. Water level inside the lock rises or falls to match the next section. When the water levels become the same, gates open, and the ship moves to the next lock.
The Three Gorges Dam is not just a dam—it’s a symbol of China’s courage and creativity. Visitors from around the world come to see this modern wonder. Students learn about its scientific achievements and the spirit of teamwork behind it. The dam teaches us that with determination (决心), humans can overcome even the most difficult challenges of nature.

Oreille was around forty years old. He worked as a head clerk in the War Office. He stayed there only because his wife wanted to increase their income, even though they hardly spent any. He hardly got any pocket money from her wife. He often complained about how she made his life difficult, and some of it really hurt his feelings.
For two years, Oreille had been coming to the office with the same old, patched umbrella. His colleagues made fun of it a lot. Finally, he got sick of their jokes and told his wife to buy him a new one. She bought an eight-franc-and-a-half umbrella, one of those cheap ones sold in thousands in Paris. When the men at the office saw it, they started joking again, and Oreille felt terrible. He was so angry that he told his wife to buy him a new, good silk umbrella for twenty francs (法郎) and show him the bill.
She bought him an eighteen-franc umbrella and said, getting angry and red in the face as she gave it to him, “This will last you at least five years.”
Oreille felt proud, and his new umbrella got a little applause (掌声) at the office. When he got home in the evening, his wife said to him, looking worriedly at the umbrella, “You shouldn’t keep it tied or it might cut the silk.”
She took it, untied it, and was shocked and angry to find a big hole in the middle of the silk. It looked like it was made by the end of a cigar.
“What’s that?” she shouted.
Her husband answered calmly, without looking, “What is it? What do you mean?”
She was so angry that she could hardly speak. “You…you…burned your umbrella! Why…you must be crazy! Do you want to make us poor?”
She rushed at him as if she was going to hit him and pushed the burned hole right under his nose.
Oreille was so surprised that he could only stutter (结结巴巴地说) out, “What… What is it? How would I know? I didn’t do anything, I promise. I don’t know how this happened.”
“You were showing off and opened it at the office!” she yelled.
“I only opened it once to let them see how nice it was. That’s all, I promise.”
But she was shaking with anger and started an argument. Even a calm person would be more afraid of this than a battlefield. She fixed it with a piece of silk. The next day, Oreille went to work quietly with the umbrella. He put it in a cupboard and didn’t think about it anymore.
That evening, as soon as Oreille got home, his wife took the umbrella from him, opened it, and was horrified. The umbrella was covered in many small holes, like someone had emptied the ashes from a lit pipe on it.
She was so angry that she couldn’t say a word. He was also shocked when he saw the damage.
They looked at each other, and then he looked at the floor. Then she threw the broken umbrella at his head and shouted, “Oh! You stupid man! You did it on purpose, but I’ll get back at you. You won’t get another one.”
And then the argument started again. After an hour of shouting, Oreille said he really didn’t understand how it happened.
A doorbell rang and saved him. It was a friend they were expecting for dinner.

Travelling to different places is always an exciting experience. But sometimes, we may find dangerous or unexpected things along the way. What is your most thrilling travel story?
During the Spring Festival in 2023, I decided to take a short trip to Macao. When I arrived, I found that Macao buses only accepted cash (现金) or bus cards at that time. But I didn’t bring any cash because I thought that mobile payments like WeChat Pay or Alipay would work everywhere. I panicked and thought I would be stuck there forever. Luckily, a friendly stranger helped me by exchanging some cash with me, and I finally solved this problem.
This trip taught me an important lesson: Always be prepared before traveling.
Yan Zihan, 16, Shenzhen No 7 Senior High School, Guangdong
When we were traveling in Yangon, Myanmar, in 2017, my mother and I got off our tour bus to buy some ice cream. But later, we saw that the bus had left without us.
My mom tried to call for help, but there was no phone signal. We didn’t know what to do. I started looking around instead. A beautiful lake nearby caught my attention. The water was shining, and a dragon boat was floating quietly on the lake. I also saw local children running to the street to pick up pretty stones. We felt more relaxed after we saw the beautiful view of Yangon. We waited calmly. Later, the bus came back to pick us up.
I learned that when things are uncertain, it is important to stay calm and have a positive attitude (态度).
Bian Jiuming, 16, Xishan High School of Kunming No 1 High School, Yunnan
Five years ago, my family took a train trip to Gansu Province. To explore the place, we rented a car. Growing up near the ocean, I found the desert view very exciting and new.
Around midnight, we arrived in a very quiet area. At first, I enjoyed the peaceful night. But then, we heard wolf howls in the dark. We were very frightened, so we stayed in the car with the headlights on. Twenty minutes later, some dog-like animals ran past us. We stayed in the car and didn’t leave until much later.
When we reached a city at dawn, the hotel worker told us that we had come across wolves. They explained that the route (路线) we took was full of wild animals. Even now, this memory still makes me feel scared.

The Three Gorges Dam (三峡大坝), lying on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province, is one of the largest and most amazing engineering projects in the world.
