International Ask a Question Day
The big picture: International Ask a Question Day presents a wonderful opportunity to spark (激发) our curiosity and increase our knowledge. It encourages youngsters to ask their family about life, students to inquire about their subjects, or friends to find out more about each other. This event aims to build open minds, awareness, and meaning by understanding the way our world, and the people in it, function.
Why it is important: This day is celebrated on Albert Einstein’s birthday, March 14. Einstein said that “the important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.” Sadly, 250 million children worldwide lack access to proper education and experienced teachers. This affects their right to explore their curiosity and increase their knowledge by getting answers to burning questions about life. Moreover, 750 million people can’t read or write, thus limiting the questions they can ask and how well they figure out the answers.
How you can get involved: A good way to contribute to International Ask a Question Day is to volunteer or fundraise for organizations that improve access to education, information, and — why not — answers to questions! In addition, you can hold a Q&A forum (论坛) or “Ask Me Anything” session with your friends, family, or co-workers to find out more about them and their knowledge. Besides that, you can simply think of a question (or more!) that you’ve wanted to know the answer to for a long time and ask away — an educator, expert, or even Google. While you’re at it, look for expert advice online from motivational talks and educational sites on how to ask questions well.
1. What is the main purpose of International Ask a Question Day?
A. To raise funds for education.
B. To provide answers to all questions.
C. To celebrate a scientist’s birthday.

2. Why does the author mention some numbers in paragraph 2?
A. To illustrate the necessity of this day.
B. To emphasize the need for more teachers.
C. To encourage children to ask more questions.
D. To show the success of educational programs.
3. Which activity is suggested for celebrating the day?
A. Organizing a Q&A forum. B. Donating books to libraries.
C. Delivering motivational talks. D. Watching educational videos.

Sarla Thakral, born in 1914 in New Delhi, made history as India’s first female pilot in 1936. Her journey in aviation (航空) was groundbreaking, especially in an era dominated by men. Despite facing significant setbacks, including her husband’s death, she remained determined and succeeded in multiple fields. Her story continues to inspire women globally.
Sarla Thakral’s introduction to aviation came through her marriage to P. D. Sharma at the age of 16. Her husband’s family, with nine aviators, was deeply involved in flying. Encouraged by her husband, she began learning to fly at the Lahore Flying Club. In 1936, she received her “A” license after flying for over 1,000 hours, becoming the first Indian woman to fly alone in a Gypsy Moth plane.
Sarla’s aviation career was promising, but World War II and her husband’s death in 1939 stopped her progress. Resolute, she shifted her focus to the arts. She studied at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore, mastering painting and textile (纺织品) design. Her talent in jewelry design led to a successful career, with clients like Vijayalakshmi Pandit.
Sarla’s adaptability and determination shone through these challenges. Sarla Thakral’s impact extends far beyond her personal achievements. She set an example to women in Indian aviation, a field that now claims the highest percentage of female pilots globally. Her strength and perseverance (毅力) inspire women to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields. Sarla’s refusal to let social expectations limit her dreams, whether in aviation or the arts, is a powerful example of what passion and perseverance can achieve.
From breaking barriers in aviation to being a master of the arts, Sarla Thakral’s life experiences serve as a reminder that courage and a will to work can make anyone great. As India continues to celebrate its pioneering women, Sarla Thakral’s name is forever in history as a true pioneer.
4. When did Sarla Thakral become India’s first female pilot?
A. At 16. B. At 22. C. At 25. D. 131.
5. What inspired Sarla Thakral to learn to fly?
A. Her own interest. B. Her ambition to be famous.
C. Her husband’s encouragement. D. Her desire to break gender barriers.
6. What do we know about Sarla Thakral’s experiences?
A. She had no interest in the arts before 1939.
B. Her family didn’t support her flying at first.
C. Her achievements couldn’t be matched by anyone.
D She inspired many women to enter male-dominated fields.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. The History of Indian Female Pilots
B. Sarla Thakral: The First Female Pilot
C. The Challenges Faced by Female Pilots
D. Sarla Thakral: A Pioneer in Aviation and Arts

Speaking more than one language may benefit children’s executive (执行的) function — especially those with autism spectrum (自闭症谱系) disorder (ASD), a recent analysis suggests.
The study, published in Autism Research, looked at 116 children aged 7 through 12. Of those, 53 had autism spectrum disorder and 63 did not, though 4 children were later excluded. Twenty-one of the children with ASD spoke more than one language, and 35 of the typically developing children were multilingual (讲多种语言的). Most of the multilingual children spoke English and Spanish, though some spoke Portuguese, Hebrew, French, Japanese or Bulgarian in addition to English.
The researchers tested the children’s executive function abilities and asked parents to fill out surveys assessing autism behaviors such as viewpoint taking — the ability to understand viewpoints other than one’s own — and social communication.
The multilingual children all demonstrated better executive function than their counterparts who spoke just one language, regardless of whether they were on the autism spectrum. But the effect was more salient in multilingual kids with ASD. These kids had much better self-control than those who only spoke one language and had ASD.
The research also found a “direct and indirect association between multilingualism and viewpoint taking.” This could be because people who speak more than one language must assess social signals to decide which language to speak or that their knowledge of more than one language comes with a higher ability to understand language itself, the researchers said.
Multilingual children’s executive functions could be improved by the need to choose the right language to speak, the researchers write. “If you have to balance two languages, you have to control one in order to use the other,” said Lucina Uddin, who was a professor at the University of Miami during the research. “That’s the idea. The ability to stop yourself from doing something might be strengthened by knowing two languages.”
Encouraging multilingualism at home could benefit kids with autism spectrum disorders, the researchers conclude, and could even provide a “natural intervention” for some types of executive function.
8. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the study?
A. Its conclusion. B. Its participants.
C Its procedures. D. Its significance.
9. What does the underlined word “salient” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Predictable. B. Noticeable. C. Potential. D. Serious.
10. What conclusion can we draw about multilingual children?
A. They are less likely to be sidetracked.
B. They are more creative in language use.
C. They are better at controlling themselves.
D. They are more likely to have language disorders
11. What’s the researchers’ attitude to promoting multilingualism at home for autistic children?
A. Negative. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.

“What do I want to eat? What else could I eat? I just ate, but what other food is there? These are some of the thoughts that may come into the mind of someone dealing with food noise,” says Dr. Jeff Alfonsi, an internal medicine specialist. Simply put, it’s the constant thought or mental dialogue about food. And people are being more outspoken about it, from social media users sharing their experience online to famous faces like Oprah Winfrey talking about it.
Weight loss medications have been playing a major role in bringing the conversation on food noise to the forefront. One unexpected outcome from GLP-1 medications has been patients reporting the reduction of food noise, according to experts.
Food noise can also contribute to overeating or eating the wrong foods for your body. It can also present itself in other ways, including: thinking about when, what or how much to eat; not being present in your current meal — constantly thinking ahead about what you will eat; feeling guilty after eating something, etc. But don’t confuse food noise with normal hunger signals.
Anyone can experience food noise, but it can have a more pronounced impact on certain groups. Food noise has a particularly negative impact on people struggling with weight loss, people in stressful environments, teenagers, and even athletes. And dangerously, those with eating disorders can often be most sensitive to food noise.
There are both genetic (基因的) and social factors that contribute to food noise. When we look back at our history, having a high degree of food noise was probably really valuable for survival. You needed nutrients, you needed food, and those people who were really focused on that maybe helped get food and store it, and it led to a survival advantage.
There are multiple ways to help quiet food noise, according to experts. GLP-1s and weight-loss pills can be effective for patients dealing with food noise. Next, try doing other things like exercise or meditation (冥想) to help stop the food noise. Working with a registered dietitian is another way to work through food noise.
12. Why does the author mention Oprah Winfrey in paragraph 1?
A. To promote celebrities’ views on dieting.
B To suggest she is an expert in food noise.
C. To show food noise is a widely discussed topic.
D. To indicate she has a problem with food noise.
13. Which of the following groups may be most affected by food noise?
A. People with eating disorders. B. People focusing on healthy food.
C. People who are good at meditation. D. People with a high survival advantage.
14. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To provide a detailed history of food noise.
B. To enhance the use of weight loss medications.
C. To explain the concept of food noise and its impact.
D. To encourage people to seek medical help for food noise.
15. Where can you probably read the text?
A. In a sci-fi report. B. In a cooking book.
C. In a travel guide. D. In a health magazine.

One of the best decisions I ever made was volunteering at the Blue Ocean Discovery Center. It was the summer before my senior year of high school and I wanted to be involved in something fun. I also knew that in the fall I wanted to start applying to colleges and needed to enhance my college application. When I learned about the volunteer opportunity I was very interested. I applied and got accepted.
During that summer I had more fun than I could have imagined. The staff were so lovely and taught me so many things. It didn’t take long for me to pick up the life history facts of every animal in the center. I had signed up for a few hours, a few days a week, and every day I found myself trying to find excuses to stay longer. Even though I repeatedly spoke with visitors about the same animals, it never got old. The joy I got from inspiring them to recycle, or at least not to throw their rubbish on the beach, was nothing like I ever felt before.
I left this volunteer experience with an even stronger passion for working with wildlife and a better idea of what I wanted to study in college. In the fall of 2014, I was accepted to Unity College to get my Bachelor of Science Degree in Captive Wildlife Care and Education. At Unity, I developed an even deeper passion for animals and learned about environmental issues. I spent time working with all different kinds of animals in the summers while I wasn’t at school, but I never forgot about the time I spent at the Discovery Center. At the time, I couldn’t commit to something unpaid, but the idea of working there never really went away.
After graduation, I looked for a job. I doubted that a place so impressive as the Blue Ocean Discovery Center had any job openings, but I decided to look anyway. Well, my jaw almost hit the floor when I saw they were hiring an educator to manage the Blue Ocean Discovery Center for the summer. Without hesitation, I applied.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
I doubted if anyone remembered me, but I knew I had to try at least.

That summer I was responsible for many tasks in the Blue Ocean Discovery Center.

C. Its procedures.
A. Negative. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. D

I’m sorry to hear about your situation. I understand how important singing is to you. Here are my suggestions:
First, create a schedule that balances study and practice time. Show your mom you can manage both. For example, practice 20 minutes after finishing homework. Second, talk to your mom calmly. 47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I doubted if anyone remembered me, but I knew I had to try at least.

That summer I was responsible for many tasks in the Blue Ocean Discovery Center.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I doubted if anyone remembered me, but I knew I had to try at least. I nervously walked into the Discovery Center, my heart pounding like a drum. As I approached the reception desk, I took a deep breath and introduced myself. To my great surprise, the staff member behind the desk lit up with recognition. “Oh, you’re the one who used to volunteer here! We’ve all missed you,” she said warmly. My heart soared with relief and joy. During the interview, I shared my experiences at Unity College and how the Discovery Center had inspired me. I could see the interviewers’ eyes sparkle with interest. A few days later, I received the offer. I was over the moon, knowing I was about to return to the place that had shaped my passion.
That summer I was responsible for many tasks in the Blue Ocean Discovery Center. I designed educational programs for visitors, conducted guided tours, and organized beach clean-up events. Every day was filled with excitement and challenges. When I saw visitors’ eyes light up as they learned about the marine life, I felt a sense of fulfillment that was beyond words. I also had the chance to work closely with the new volunteers, just like the staff had done with me before. I shared my knowledge and enthusiasm with them, hoping to pass on the torch. It was a summer full of growth, learning, and unforgettable moments, and I knew I had found my calling.
