As hockey fans filed into Climate Pledge Arena for the Seattle Krake’s first-ever home game, Brian Hamilton, the assistant equipment manager for the visiting Vancouver Canucks, lay out the team’s hockey sticks, masks and bottled water. As he did so, he didn’t notice the woman, Nadia Popovici, who took the seat directly behind him. Nor did she pay much attention to him. That would change soon enough.
Halfway the game, Popovici’s eyes locked onto something odd on the man sitting with the Canucks players. Through the arena glass, she spotted a mole(色素痣)on the back of Hamilton’s neck: reddish and raised. She had seen plenty like it as a hospital volunteer and soon-to-be medical student. It was a cancerous melanoma. She was sure of it. What she wasn’t sure of was how to approach Hamilton. It’s uncomfortable to have something on your body pointed out. But she knew she had to say something. As Hamilton lingered near the ice between periods, Popovici knocked on the glass, typed a message on her phone and held the screen against the barrier: “The mole on the back of your neck looks like it might be cancerous. You might want to go to see a doctor!”
Hamilton glanced at the brightly lit message for only a second. That’s weird, he thought. Walking away, he uneasily rubbed the back of his neck.
A few days later, he visited the Canucks’ doctor, who agreed that the mole looked alarming and ordered a biopsy. It came back positive — a stage 2 malignant melanoma, life-threatening if left unattended.
“She took me out of a slow fire,” says Hamilton. “The words out of the doctor’s mouth were if I ignored that for four to five years, I wouldn’t be here.”
The two connected at the next matchup, where Hamilton thanked his guardian angel in person. “No thanks,” Popovici said. “It was just one moment in our lives where we crossed paths at the right time.”
24. What can be inferred about Nadia Popovici from the first two paragraphs?
A. She was a soon-to-be medical student working at the arena.
B. She hesitated to help because she wasn’t sure of her diagnosis.
C. She intentionally sat behind Hamilton in order to examine him.
D. She recognized the mole’s danger due to her medical knowledge.
25. How did Hamilton react to Popovici’s message?
A. He found the message ridiculous.
B. He dismissed the message as a joke.
C. He took her warning seriously later.
D. He immediately sought medical help.
26. Which words can best describe Popovici?
A. Observant and considerate. B. Experienced and generous.
C. Passionate and warm-hearted. D. Determined and responsible.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. A lucky game B. The best seat
C. The dangerous mole D. An experienced doctor
C
People are dying for clean air. Road traffic is a leading contributor to dirty air; in London, for instance, it is responsible for 60% of outdoor particulate dust. Electric vehicles (EVs) are often preferred because they can be powered by clean, sustainable energy sources and, in contrast to petrol and diesel cars, produce no exhaust air. But EVs emit other pollutants common to all cars: particles originating not from the exhaust, but from brakes, tyres and roads. These, too, can be dangerous for human health.
The most dangerous particles are those smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter, which get into the lungs and reach other organs via the bloodstream. Such dust can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, lung disease and cancer. According to British government statistics, 60% of road-traffic particles below 10 microns do not come from the combustion(燃烧), but from the gradual breakdown of tyres, brake pads and roads. Though exact figures are difficult to confirm, scientists estimate that EVs produce more of these non-exhaust particles than other cars. This is because their batteries make them heavier, causing them to generate more friction.
Although EVs may be dirtier than you think, they are still mostly less polluting than other cars. That is partly because they use an extra braking system called regenerative braking. When the driver removes their foot from the pedal, the continued forward motion of the car is harvested to recharge the battery, thereby slowing the car down. That system works independently of brake pads, potentially eliminating one source of emissions.
More radical steps can also be taken. Regulating non-exhaust emissions in a similar way to exhaust air would be one way to minimize harm to human health. Encouraging people to consider smaller cars, though difficult, would be another. Ensuring EVs run on clean electricity is also important: if their power is ultimately generated by burning coal, say, that just moves the pollution from the exhaust to the power plant chimney. Though EVs are necessary for the energy transition, they are currently far from emission-free.
28. Why do people prefer EVs?
A. Because they are cost-effective.
B. Because they are better-equipped.
C. Because they produce zero pollutant.
D. Because they generate no exhaust air.
29. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Particles smaller than 2.5 microns lead to mental disorders.
B. 60% of road traffic particles are from the breakdown of tyres.
C. Scientists have confirmed the figures of harmful particles.
D. EVs’ increased weight causes more non-exhaust particles.
30. What does the underlined word “eliminating” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Increasing. B. Removing. C. Minimizing. D. Producing.
31. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To promote regenerative braking technology in EVs.
B. To advocate the role of EVs in sustainable development.
C. To discuss the pollution risks of EVs beyond exhaust air.
D. To compare exhaust emissions between EVs and petrol cars.
D
While iron is known to form in the burning cores of stars, astrophysicists are still chasing down the sources of heavier elements, such as gold. Now, a study published last week in The Astrophysical Journal Letters suggests powerful bursts from magnetars(磁星)may have contributed up to 10 percent of all elements heavier than iron in the Milky Way.
Magnetars are neutron(中子)stars with powerful magnetic fields. Sometimes, the magnetar’s inner motion leads pressure to build up on its surface, which ultimately releases energy in a “starquake”. These chaotic events can include strong and rare bursts of radiation called magnetar giant flares.
Researchers already had one potential explanation for heavy elements: collisions between neutron stars. In 2017, researchers found these mergers could create heavy elements such as gold and platinum. But these alone can’t account for all the heavy elements present in our galaxy and universe. “The trouble with neutron star mergers is that they occur relatively late in the history of our galaxy,” Patel says. So, any heavy elements formed before that time would have come from a different source.
Some of the study’s authors had previously suggested that magnetar giant flares could be the mysterious other origin. But they needed direct evidence. For the new paper, the team investigated records of a massive magnetar giant flare that was observed in 2004. They predicted the potential gamma-ray signal that would have been emitted if elements from the flare had decayed into heavy metals. Then, when analyzing the gamma-ray data from NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), they came across a previously unexplained smaller signal. The researchers were surprised to see that the smaller gamma-ray signal matched their predictions of what a heavy-element-creating magnetar giant flare would look like.
“When initially building our model and making our predictions back in December 2024, none of us knew the signal was already in the data. And none of us could have imagined that our theoretical models would fit the data so well,” says Patel.
“This is a very exciting development,” says Hsin-Yu Chen, an astrophysicist not involved in the research, “It shows new observational evidence for another way heavy elements can form in the universe.”
32. What causes magnetar giant flares?
A.The motion of the magnetar. B.The burst of mounting pressure.
C.The strong spread of radiation. D.The explosion of magnetic fields.
33. What supported the researchers’ assumption about the source of heavy elements?
A. The observation of a magnetar giant flare.
B. A previously well-known smaller signal.
C. A gamma-ray signal matching predictions.
D. The prediction of initial theoretical models.
34. What is the attitude of Hsin-Yu Chen towards the findings?
A. Skeptical. B. Indifferent. C. Favourable. D. Objective.
35. What is the main idea of the article?
A. Heavy elements formed in the universe much earlier than expected.
B. Heavy elements suggest the historical development of the Milky Way.
C. Magnetar giant flares provide documentary data for heavy elements.
D. Magnetar giant flares may be a source of the Galaxy’s heavy elements.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One crisp autumn morning, as the sun was just beginning to cast its golden rays over the quiet town, I decided to take a walk in the nearby woods.
As I wandered deeper into the woods, I noticed something unusual. There, lying on the ground, was a small, shivering creature. It was a young fox, its fur a brilliant orange-red, but it was clearly in distress. Its leg was twisted at an odd angle, and it whimpered softly as I approached. My heart ached at the sight of the injured animal. I had always been fond of animals, and the thought of leaving this little fox to suffer alone was unbearable.
I carefully picked up the fox, cradling it gently in my arms. It was surprisingly light, and it looked up at me with big, frightened eyes. I decided to take it home and see if I could help. Once I arrived, I quickly gathered some supplies from the first aid kit. I cleaned the wound as best I could and wrapped it with a bandage. The fox seemed to sense my kindness and gradually relaxed in my arms.
Over the next few days, I took care of the fox, feeding it and keeping it warm. I named it “Rusty” because of its beautiful fur. Rusty and I grew closer with each passing day. It would follow me around the house, and I would spend hours just sitting with it, talking and petting it. I even started to teach it some simple tricks, and Rusty was a quick learner.
One evening, with Rusty curled up beside me, I reflected on how much this little fox had changed my life. I had always been a bit of a loner, but Rusty had given me a sense of purpose and companionship. I realized that animals have a unique ability to connect with us on a deep, emotional level.
However, I also knew that Rusty belonged to the wild. It was not meant to be a pet, and I couldn’t keep it forever. I decided that once Rusty was fully healed, I would release it back into the forest. It was a difficult decision, but I knew it was the right one.
