Colin Wagener, South Australia’s most senior World War Ⅱ veteran (老兵) , recently celebrated his incredible 107th birthday, yet he feels as if he hadn’t aged a day past 90. Living on his 24-hectare property in Adelaide Hills, Wagener stays active, riding his motorbike and chopping wood with an electric saw. “All I am doing is slowing down,” he said, recalling an X-ray that revealed his bones to be younger than his age.
Born during World War I, Wagener has seen the Great Depression, 25 different prime ministers, and lots of changes in technology. He remembers the day he returned from WW Ⅱ on Christmas morning in 1945 as one of his most special memories. “After six years at war, I will never forget it... it was the best Christmas ever,” he shared.
A cherished childhood memory was receiving a motorbike for his 16th birthday, which he rode to school once, impressing his classmates but not the headmaster who was stuck in the horse and buggy days. At 17, he made a car that looked like an MG, fueling a lifelong passion for cars that took him around the world to compete in races.
Wagener is also proud of opening Adelaide’s first motel in 1962, the Princes Highway Motel on Glen Osmond Rd, before many other roadside hotels were built. His quick humor and friendliness have made him popular with customers at Essence Cafe, who sang “happy birthday” and gave him flowers during his interview.
South Australia’s Minister for Veterans Affairs Joe Szakacs planned to visit Wagener to wish him happy birthday in person, saying, “His life is a testament to resilience, hard work, and a love of adventure that continues to inspire those around him.”
Mr Wagener’s life is full of rich experiences, from making his first car to running a motel, and his dedication to his country and community has left an indelible mark on South Australia. His 107th birthday celebrations showed a well-lived life, full of adventure, love, and a strong desire to keep going.
4. What can we learn about Wagener from paragraph 1?
A. He is still energetic. B. His fame brings him great property.
C. His body presents some abnormal phenomenon. D. He lives a hard life after experiencing many wars.
5. Why does the author mention the Princes Highway Motel in paragraph 4?
A. To prove Wagener’s kindness. B. To set an example for other veterans.
C. To imply the local government’s support. D. To show Wagener’s strong desire to keep going.
6. What does Joe Szakacs think of Wagener?
A. Sensitive. B. Inspiring. C. Demanding. D. Thoughtful.
7. What does the underlined word “indelible” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Invisible. B. Disgraceful. C. Unacceptable. D. Irremovable.

If you have noticed a sudden accumulation of wrinkles, aches and pains or a general sensation of having grown older almost overnight, there may be a scientific explanation. Researchers have discovered that the process of aging in humans is not as slow and steady as previously thought. Instead, it occurs in at least two accelerated (加速) bursts, primarily at ages of 44 and 60. The study, published in the journal Nature Aging, suggests that these periods of dramatic change could explain sharp rises in certain health issues, including heart and blood vessel diseases.
The research involved 108 volunteers, aged 25 to 75, who submitted blood, body waste samples, and skin, oral and nasal swabs every few months for up to seven years. Scientists analyzed over 135, 000 different molecules, including RNA, proteins, and metabolites (代谢物). The results showed that the abundance of most molecules did not change gradually but rather sharply when people were in their mid-40s and early 60s.
The mid-40s aging surge was unexpected and was initially believed to be influenced by perimenopausal (围绝经期的) changes in women. However, further analysis revealed similar shifts in men of the same age group, suggesting that other more significant factors were at play. The first wave of changes involved molecules linked to heart and blood vessel diseases and metabolism, while the second wave included those related to immune regulation and kidney function. Molecules associated with skin and muscle aging changed at both time points.
The pattern observed in the study was consistent with previous evidence showing that the risk of many age-related diseases increases sharply after critical points, such as age 60 for Alzheimer’s and blood vessel diseases. Additionally, some of these changes may be linked to lifestyle or behavioral factors, like increased alcohol consumption during stressful periods in mid-life.
The findings have potential implications for targeting interventions to alleviate the effects of aging. For instance, increasing exercise before and during periods of rapid muscle loss could be beneficial. “We should try to adjust our lifestyles while we’re still healthy, ” emphasized Prof Michael Snyder, the senior author of the study.
8. What is the main finding of the study?
A. Aging is a gradual and continuous process.
B. People grow old dramatically at certain ages.
C. The risk of age-related diseases can be wiped out.
D. Health issues are concentrated in a particular period.
9. Which paragraph shows the process of the study?
A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph 2. C. Paragraph 3. D. Paragraph 4.
10. What result of the study surprised the scientists?
A. Men go through the similar changes as women of the same age do.
B. Molecules related to skin and muscle aging have few changes.
C. Women change more obviously than men of the same age group.
D. Immune regulation and kidney function change dramatically in mid-40s.
11. What does Prof Michael Snyder indicate in the last paragraph?
A. Muscle loss in mid-life is unavoidable.
B. Humans grow old slowly and steadily after 60.
C. Early prevention can relieve the effects of aging.
D. Exercise during periods of dramatic change can solve age-related problems.
D
The ability to interpret the world through acoustic vibrations (声振动) from an object is something we do without thinking. And it’s an ability that researchers are trying to bring to robots to strengthen their rapidly growing set of sensing abilities. New research from Duke University details a system called SonicSense that allows robots to interact with their surroundings in ways previously limited to humans.
SonicSense features a robotic hand with four fingers, each equipped with a contact microphone embedded in the fingertip. These sensors detect and record vibrations generated when the robot taps, grasps, or shakes an object. And because the microphones are in contact with the object, it allows the robot to tune out surrounding noises.
Based on the interactions and detected signals, SonicSense extracts frequency features and uses its previous knowledge, paired with recent advancements in AI, to figure out what material the object is made out of and its 3D shape. If it’s an object the system has never seen before, it might take 20 different interactions for the system to come to a conclusion. But if it’s an object already in its database, it can correctly identify it in as little as four.
While SonicSense is not the first attempt to use this approach, it goes further and performs better than previous work by using four fingers instead of one, touch-based microphones that tune out surrounding noises and advanced AI techniques. This setup allows the system to identify objects composed of more than one material with complex geometries (几何图形), transparent or reflective surfaces, which are challenging for vision-based systems.
Moving forward, the group is working to enhance the system’s ability to interact with multiple objects. By integrating object-tracking algorithms (算法), robots will be able to handle dynamic, cluttered environments — bringing them closer to human-like adaptability in real-world tasks. Another key development lies in the design of the robotic hand itself. In the future, SonicSense will be used in more advanced robotic hands, allowing robots to perform tasks that require a delicate sense of touch.
12. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. A new trend of microphone application. B. The underestimated robots’ sensing abilities.
C. Different interactions with SonicSense. D. Working principles of SonicSense.
13. How does SonicSense identify a strange object?
A. By touching it integrally. B. By confirming it with the help of humans.
C. By taking multiple interactions to judge it. D. By matching it with the image in database.
14. What is challenging for vision-based systems?
A. Identifying objects with composite materials. B. Assessing the power to touch objects.
C. Recognizing the dark-colored surface. D. Taking apart the complex geometries.
15. Which aspect of robots will be improved?
A. Adaptive capacity. B. Database.
C. Human-like appearance. D. 3D printing technology.

As a child who had to take a lot of medicine, I had quite the collection of those plastic orange pill bottles with the white caps. I remember wondering why they were that strange color and then deciding that they must have been designed in the 1970s because everything from that decade seemed to have that strange tone to it. ____16____ Pill bottles are clear orange for a few important reasons.
Orange bottles keep medicine effective. It’s important to protect medicine from light, as it can degrade or lose effect when exposed to UV light. ____17____ Nearly every type of medicine, from pain relievers to sleep aids, is provided in these bottles. They’ve become as universe as those over-the-counter bottles stuffed with cotton.
____18____ Orange pill bottles have been accepted as the standard practice, and when someone sees an orange bottle, they connect this with prescription medicine. This connection is so strong that it communicates across languages, ages and cultures that whatever is in the bottle is medicine and should be treated with care.
Do pill bottles have to be orange plastic? No. ____19____ Some are designed, from a marketing perspective, to help patients with brand recognition. Others are designed with a specific purpose to protect the medication—for instance, medicine that really needs to be kept out of sunlight, such as some types of antibiotics, often comes in dark bottles. ____20____
A. But my childhood fancy was wrong.
B. Pill bottles can and do come in a variety of colors and materials.
C. From a safety standpoint, making pill bottles orange is a smart move.
D. It’s designed to help people identify the types of medicine inside directly.
E. Drugstores generally don’t choose the color or style of pill bottles they use.
F. But the orange color is the most popular, since it’s considered the standard.
G. The color orange helps keep out the UV light, so it doesn’t alter the medicine.

During my high school years, I had a classmate named Emma who faced significant challenges. Emma, bright and enthusiastic, had a learning disability that made academic tasks, especially reading and writing, difficult for her. However, her spirit remained unbroken. She was always ready to lend a hand or share a kind word with others.
Our English teacher, Mrs Johnson, noticed Emma’s struggles. Rather than let her struggle, Mrs Johnson offered extra help. Emma was initially reluctant, fearing that accepting help meant admitting defeat. But Mrs Johnson’s persistence paid off, and Emma agreed to receive additional tutoring after school. The extra sessions were tough. Emma worked tirelessly, slowly improving her reading and writing skills. I remember seeing her in the library, surrounded by books, her face a picture of concentration. Sometimes I joined her, offering my help. We became good friends, sharing not just studies but also laughter and stories.
As the year progressed, Emma’s improvements were noticeable. She started participating more in class discussions, her confidence visibly growing. Her hard work was paying off, and everyone around her took notice. Mrs Johnson often praised her progress, encouraging her to keep pushing forward.
Then came the school’s annual speech competition. Mrs Johnson encouraged Emma to participate, believing it would be a great opportunity for her to showcase her progress. Emma was hesitant, scared of failure, but eventually decided to take part. She spent weeks preparing her essay, pouring her heart and soul into every word.
The day of the competition arrived, and Emma was a little nervous. However, once she started reading her essay in front of the school, her voice was steady and her words were clear. It was a moving piece about overcoming obstacles and believing in oneself. The audience was fascinated.
After she finished, the room erupted into applause. Emma’s face lit up with a mix of relief and happiness. Regardless of the competition’s outcome, she had already won a personal victory.

A few hours after the competition, the results were announced. Emma, to her disbelief and joy, won a second place. The news spread quickly, and she was greeted with congratulations from teachers and students. Mrs Johnson hugged her, saying, “You did it, Emma! Your hard work and courage paid off.” That moment was more than just a win in a competition; it was a victory over her own doubts and fears.
The end of the school year brought an unexpected surprise for Emma — she was honored with the “Most Inspirational Student” award. During the annual school awards ceremony, as she walked onto the stage, the entire hall stood up, erupting into thunderous applause to celebrate her strong will and determination. Emma’s eyes welled up with tears of joy as she accepted the award from the principal, a valuable reminder of her journey’s challenges. The prize served as significant confirmation of her work and a lasting motivation for all who witnessed it.
