Never judge a book by its cover-even if the cover doesn't say much at all.The first thing
customers see when they walk into the Strand Book Store in Manhattan is a table of nameless
books with covers wrapped like Christmas presents and titles replaced by general descriptions.
The store calls it "Blind Date With a Book".
People love it,Paul Colarusso, the communications director for the Strand, said,"We put it
right at the front of the store because it quite literally stops people in their tracks.""People are
attracted to the element of surprise, which focuses attention and creates a dopamine()
response,"Mr.Tobin,an associate professor at Case Westem University, said.Meanwhile, stores
have found a new way to sell books that are overlooked because they are not new,best-selling or
penned by a famous author.
Much like real dating, there's no perfect science, and an element of trial and error is
involved.Fantasy and mystery books work well.Forgotten books from the past are great too.

On a warm Friday morning, the bookstore is packed.About half the customers stop at the
"Blind Date Books"display by the entrance, closely inspecting the neatly drawn, wrapped
covers.Heather Toner buys one."Throwing caution to the wind and letting someone else choose

For many students, math class is the subject of nightmares. Many who enthusiastically
show off their counting skills in pre-school years later consider math class the most hated hour
of the school day.The problem, according to a Stanford education professor,is a matter of
mindset.
Jo Boaler, professor of mathematics education at Stanford, has studied how students learn
math,to identify why so many students end up hating or fearing math, and, too often,
underachieve. In her new book,Mathematical Mindsets,Boaler describes how society has
traditionally valued one type of math learner-one who can memorize well and calculate fast
-as opposed to others who have the same potential but may be deeper, slower.
The"testing culture"in American schools is a major problem for math learners,Boaler said,
noting that exams and tests are far more pervasive in math than other subjects. The combination
of frequent testing, procedural teaching and uninteresting questions disconnected from students'
lives causes many students to regard math as a "cold, lifeless subject"without a human
connection.
The good news is that any student's negative perception of math can dramatically change,
Boaler said. She works with Stanford psychology Professor Carol Dweck to deliver growth
mindset interventions to teachers and students.A"growth mindset"is built around the idea that
most basic abilities can be developed and expanded upon through dedication and hard work.By
contrast, with a "fixed mindset,"people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or
talent,.are simply fixed traits(特征).
"When we open up mathematics and teach broad, visual, creative math, then we teach math
as a learning subject instead of as a performance subject,"Boaler said,"The outcome is that the
subject becomes deeper and filled with more connections,so students enjoy it more and achieve
at higher levels."
Critics such as Marina Ratner, professor of mathematics at the University of Califomia,
express skepticism towards moving away from traditional methods.Math is math;there is no
shortcut. They argue that without solid basic skills, students might struggle with subjects like
alr ()let alone tackling any other higher-level STEM courses.
28 What problem is presented in the text?
A.Students fear math due to abstract concepts.
B.There is a lack of standardized tests in math.
C.Math learners focus on advanced concepts too early.
D.Traditional math teaching discourages many students.
29.What does the word"pervasive"most likely mean in the third paragraph?
A.Occasional.
B.Demanding.
C.Widespread.
D.Unreasonable.
30.Which pair best describes the contrast between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset?
A.Dynamic methods vs.standard methods
B.Group learning vs.individual learning.
C.Improvable abilities vs.inborn abilities.
D.Long-term results vs.short-term results.
31.What is Marina Ratner's attitude towards traditional methods of math teaching?
A.Unclear.
B.Supportive.
C.Doubtful.
D.Critical.

Each year, the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest-an area about the size of
Iceland because of cutting down trees. At that rate, some scientists predict the world's forests
could disappear in 100 to 200 years. To handle it,now researchers at Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT)have pioneered a technique to generate wood-like plant materials in a lab.
This makes it possible to"grow"a wooden product without cutting down trees.
In the lab,the researchers first take cells from the leaves of a young plant. These cells are
cultured in liquid medium for two days, then moved to another medium which contains nutrients
and two different hormones ()By adjusting the hormone levels, the researchers can tune
the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells.Next, the researchers use a 3D printer to shape
the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grow in the dark for three months. Finally,
the researchers dehydrate (the material, and then evaluate its qualities.
They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells
of lower density ()while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials
with smaller but denser cell structures.Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant
materials softer or more rigid, helping the materials grow with different wood-like
characteristics. What's more,it's to be noted that the research process is about 100 times faster
than the time it takes for a tree to grow to maturity!
Research of this kind is groundbreaking."This work demonstrates the great power of a
technology,"says lead researcher,Jeffrey Berenstain."The real opportunity here is to be at its
best with what you use and how you use it.This technology can be tuned to meet tne
requirements you give about shapes, sizes, rigidity, and forms. It enables us to 'grow'any
wooden product in a way that traditional agricultural methods can't achieve."
32.Why do researchers at MIT conduct the research?
A.To grow more trees.
B.To protect plant diversity.
C.To reduce tree losses.
D.To predict forest disappearance.
33.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the lab research?
A.Its theoretical basis.
B.Its key procedures.
C.Its scientific evidence
D.Its usual difficulties
34.What does the finding suggest about the plant materials?
A.The hormone levels determine their rigidity.
B.They surpass naturally grown plants in labs.
C Cell shapes are controlled by their density.
D.Growth speed determines their characteristics.
35.Why is the research groundbreaking according to Berenstain?
A.It uses new biological materials in lab experiments.
B.It revolutionizes the way to make wooden products.
C.It challenges traditional scientific theories in forestry
D.It has a significant impact on worldwide plant growth.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a bestseller written by Stephen Covey. In this
book,he proposes that to sow the seeds of success,we should move through three stages of
maturity:dependence,independence and interdependence.36
To move from being dependent upon others to becoming independex requires the
development of three of the-essential habits. The first is to be proactive.3 Instead,we
are supposed to make things happen.Similarly,we must not wait for a problem to develop, but
rather try to predict what the problem might be and then do something to prevent it from
happening. The second habit is to visualize what we want to achieve so that we can think abot
how to go about achieving it.The third habit is to list your tasks in order of priority.38
To become interdependent requires three habits that relate to the interactions with others.
Firstly,we need to search out solutions which allow us as well as our associates to experience
success.Secondly,we should develop the ability to listen to and empathize with others.
39Thirdly,we must understand the importance of teamwork, which helps us achieve
those goals that we could not achieve on our own.
40 The last habit is to sharpen the saw, which surrounds all the other habits because
it is the habit that makes the others possible. It is about renewing and enhancing the greatest
property we have-us.Investing in our own education is essential if we are to progress in an
upward spiral and achieve continued excellence.
A.We should resist the tendency to wait for things to happen.

38. G 具体阐释“按优先级排序”习惯,“do what we have to do”即为任务优先的体现,故选 G。
接对 interdependence 阶段的总结,“improve ourselves”引出第七习惯,并照应全文最后的“...if we are to
progress in an upward spiral and achieve continued excellence.”
43. B 根据后文“lost cat Rayne”和“had been found”可知,夫妇重新找到了失散的猫咪, recover表示“重新
45. D 在文章中,根据“treats and toys”(零食和玩具)以及“hopes he’d return”可知,夫妇试图用食物和玩具
3
47. B 前文提到夫妇不得不离开猫咪,且“felt like I abandoned him”,说明这是情感上最艰难的时刻。
“toughest”(最艰难的)准确描述了这种痛苦。“longest”(最长的)和“busiest”(最忙的)与情感无关,“wildest”
(最疯狂的)不符合语境。
48. D 根据“had to leave without him”和“felt like”可知,Susan因被迫离开猫咪而感到内疚,仿佛“abandoning”
其他选项中,“came into use”(开始使用)和“came into effect”(生效)未体现实用性;“came into power”
51. C 后文提到“didn’t have much energy left”(没有力气),说明猫咪精疲力尽。
55. A 从“Rayne’s microchip”和“a pet-tracking service”可知,猫咪找回来,植入的微芯片起到作用, 而芯片
locker“存放箱”,camera “照相机摄像头”, chaser “追逐者,追逐物”。
57. which 引导非限制性定语从句,代替先行项“two G1 robots face each other for the title of the “Iron Fist
58. being struck 考查状语从句的省略,省略了“it is”, 从 repeatedly 可以看出要使用被动语态的进行时,is
63. the largest
64. was valued value

Dear Editors,
As a Senior 3 student witnessing the school’s initiative to add a weekly music class, I’m delighted to share
my reflections.
The interactive sessions have become my weekly highlight. Through analyzing classical melodies and
creating rhythmic patterns with classmates, I’ve discovered fresh perspectives on artistic expression. Particularly
memorable was our group composition project blending traditional Chinese instruments with modern beats, which
unexpectedly enhanced my creativity in writing tasks. Teachers’ humorous demonstrations also make complex
music theories accessible.
To maximize this program’s value, I propose two enhancements. Firstly, organizing monthly music
workshops where students showcase talents could deepen engagement. Secondly, adjusting the class schedule to
Friday afternoons would better alleviate pre-exam stress. These adjustments may help harmonize academic rigor
with artistic cultivation.
Thank you for considering my suggestions.
Best regards,
Li Hua

I rushed home and immediately handed my parents my score card and a note with “PLEASE.” This time,
they instantly agreed. The next day, we set out for our hometown. Every one, be it relatives or neighbors, greeted
us with smiles, treating me like their own son. Every day brought new happiness — digging with Grandpa in the
garden, playing games with cousins until sunset, roaming around familiar streets with loved ones and even joining
the local kids in their football matches. The days passed as we had a wonderful time together. Truth be told,
everything was more fun in a big family. When departure day came, my heart ached.
I saw my mom had tears in her eyes when leaving grandparents. She wiped them away and smiled, saying, “I
didn’t realize how much I missed the village until now. It’s not just a place; it’s where our roots are.” As we drove
away, I felt a mix of excitement and nostalgia. I realized that the real adventure wasn’t about exploring far-off
places but about reconnecting with family and our heritage. This trip wasn’t just for me; it was a reminder for all
of us that family is the true treasure of life. From then on, visiting Grandma and Grandpa became our annual
tradition, a time to cherish love, laughter, and the simple joys of being together.

W: Hi, Michael. It’s Carol. I’m going to change Wednesday’s arrangements. Something’s come up. Could we do it
a day later?
M: Well, the only other possibility would be Friday. I’ve got a lot to do on Thursday.
W: OK.
Text 2
W: It will be about a 20-minute wait if you want to sit indoors. But we can seat you outdoors in the yard right
now.
M: OK. I don’t have 20 minutes to wait.
Text 3
M: I’d be grateful if you could do this for me.
W: That depends.
M: I may be an hour late tomorrow. I don’t want my family to know, but Miss Jones knows about it and she’s OK
with it. Oh, and could you give my homework to her tomorrow?
Text 4
W: How is your new job going?
M: Well, it takes a lot of time to put all the fruit on the shelf. And the shop is open from 8:00 a.m. to 7: 00 p.m. So
it’s much more tiring than working 9-5 in an office.
Text 5
M: It doesn’t sound as though we are able to go on our picnic tomorrow as the weather forecast is for storms.
W: That’s the first thing in the morning. The wind will blow the storm away by about 10:00 a.m. So it will be
cloudy with some sunshine by midday.
Text 6
M: Hi, Lily. I’m so glad you could make it. Where’s Greg?
W: He couldn’t come. He wasn’t feeling well.
M: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. Well, I’m glad you came along. What have you been up to?
W: Nothing much, just work, work, and work.
M: Oh, no. Well, you can forget about work and relax now. What can I get you to drink?
W: Just a glass of juice for me, please.
M: Here you go. Now, I’m just going to check on dinner. Polly will be down in a minute. She’s just upstairs
putting the kids to bed. You just sit and relax.
W: Thanks so much. I will.
Text 7
W: Have you decided where to take Mr. Brown to dinner tonight?
M: Well, I tried to get us into a private room at Anna’s Garden, because the main dining room is too noisy, but the
6
rooms were all reserved. I made a reservation at Muvi, though, for 7: 30. I haven’t tried it, but I heard it was good.
W: I’ve been there. The food is excellent. It’s right next to that Japanese place, Tami, where we had Joan’s
birthday party last month.
M: Right. Traffic can be heavy going that way. Let’s start out by 6 so we’ll be able to arrive there before Mr.
Brown.
Text 8
W: You look terrible. Did you have a car accident?
M: Well, not exactly. This morning I went to deliver milk and the garden gate of No. 12 was locked. There was a
note on the door of the house and I thought I couldn’t read it from where I was.
W: What happened next?
M: I jumped over the fence and went towards the door and, suddenly... as I was trying to read that note, a huge
dog rushed at me. I started running as fast as I could, but I didn’t see that...
W: What?
M: The big branch of the tree near the garden gate. I knocked into it.
W: What about the dog?
M: Thank God! It didn’t jump over the fence but stayed in the garden barking loudly.
W: It reminds me of a movie... a dog running after someone and...
M: Stop it, Mary. It isn’t that funny!
Text 9
M: I think the new film that Fitzgerald directed is quite good. The only problem is that it’s aimed at teenagers only.
It holds no interest for any other age group.
W: I like the great musical performances in Fitzgerald’s film. He’s also a gifted violinist and guitarist, isn’t he?
M: Well, I never see him play the violin or the guitar. As far as I know, the piano is the only instrument he likes.
W: I’ve heard that quite a few important people dislike him. Do you know anything about this?
M: Well. Fitzgerald’s expressed his opinions directly and that sometimes makes those important people annoyed.
You see, he has his own ideas about life and he doesn’t simply take on other people’s because they are famous.
Indeed, it is this very aspect of his personality that I find most attractive. I think the only person he admires and
respects is Freddie Taylor.
W: But they have different personalities. Freddie has a warm heart and he is easy to get along with.

M: Good evening and thank you for coming to find out about the Hillside Survival School. My name’s David
Johnson. I started the school and I’m the school’s chief instructor. I learned my survival skills while I was in the
army, and before starting the Hillside Survival School, I worked at various camping sites. So, let me tell you about
what happens on some of our courses. The most popular course is our basic survival course which lasts a weekend
and takes place throughout the year. This course teaches you the basic skills that you need to survive in the
wilderness and costs two hundred dollars per person. Come and join us! Imagine how much more fun you’ll have
on a sunny weekend here than you just lie on the sofa at home.
If you want an even bigger challenge, our extreme survival course takes place between November and
February when the conditions are more difficult. These courses cost two hundred and twenty pounds per person. If
you come with a group of more than ten people, each of you will get a 10% discount. The extreme survival course
teaches you to survive in a wet and cold environment. No tents, no gas cookers; just you and the wilderness. You
learn to find food and cook it over an open fire. You learn to build a shelter and then you actually sleep in it. You
will probably be surprised how well you can work under difficult conditions through this course.
