【原文】M: My name’s George Ryan and I work as a park ranger, someone who’s responsible for looking after national parks in America. The first park ever set up was Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Others include Capitol Reef National Park, which I’d love to work in one day, and the famous Rocky Mountain National Park, where I’ve worked since graduation. People often ask me what qualifications are needed for my job. Well, my workmates have degrees in natural sciences or in something more specialised like forestry. At university, I got a degree in environmental studies. One of my daily tasks is to ensure the wildlife is safe. It can be dangerous. There is the possibility of encountering a mountain lion or stepping on a poisonous snake. So I have to get ready for any situation I may find myself in, which is the essential qualification for my job. In recent years, we’ve taken a number of measures to improve the park. Last year, there was a project that involved planting trees and putting up signs that lead visitors to the less well-known attractions. Right now, I’m trying to improve the paths in poor condition. It’s physically demanding and tiring work.

Sometimes, good advice takes time to sink in. When I first read Thoreau’s Walden, I was attracted by his call to simplify our lives. Nevertheless, I ignored his advice for forty years and enjoyed my life with possessions. But one morning, an incident occurred that illustrated the wisdom of Thoreau’s advice and changed my life.
It was January 13, a bright Sunday morning at my home in Minnesota. My challenge was to remove twelve inches of snow from my driveway before my favorite soccer game began. Whenever I tried to blow the snow out of my driveway, my snowblower ran just seconds before it stopped. So I had to wheel the machine back into the garage to check and repair. Meanwhile, my neighbor smiled and waved as he finished clearing the snow using his snowblower.
I abandoned the snowblower and seized a shovel, clearing a path through the driveway wide enough in fifteen minutes. After watching the game, I took apart the snowblower and dropped the pieces into a large trash can, feeling a rush of freedom. Now, no more trips to the gas station, and no more oil changes or breakdowns.
I shared my insight with my wife Carolyn, who was supportive. Whenever it snowed heavily, we skipped working out at the gym and shoveled the driveway together. The task never took more than thirty minutes and was followed by a celebratory cup of hot chocolate. A new winter tradition was born.
Following Thoreau’s advice to simplify life, I made a system for sorting through my possessions to decide what to keep, sell, donate, or desert and encouraged Carolyn to join me in my effort. By the time we retired, we moved to a retirement community with a small rental truck, saving thousands of dollars.
In retirement, we continue to enjoy the benefits of owning no more than we need. The less we own, the less we have to take care of, and the more time we have to pursue activities that bring us joy: biking, hiking, reading, and travelling. We are glad we took Thoreau’s advice.
24. How did the author react to Thoreau’s advice at first?
A. He ignored it and kept his habits. B. He advocated the lifestyle to his friends.
C. He abandoned his private possessions. D. He made improvements according to it.
25 What did the author plan to do after clearing the snow?
A. Drive to the local gym for sports. B. Read Thoreau’s book for advice.
C. Enjoy his favorite sports program. D. Take the snowblower to the gas station.
26. What was the author’s new family tradition?
A. Sorting through the possessions to make donations.
B. Celebrating their physical work with hot chocolate.
C. Doing the repairs of their possessions by themselves.
D. Getting people in the neighborhood to clear the snow.
27. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Good advice takes little time to be absorbed.
B. Simplicity makes room for more joy in life.
C. Owning more than enough brings us benefits.
D. Exchanging our possessions boosts happiness.
【答案】24. A 25. C 26. B 27. B

On the beaches, in the deepest reaches of the backcountry — even nearly 100 feet underwater, the noise of navy training jets is unbearable for people and even endangered southern residents — tiger whales, a new scientific research shows.
In a paper published in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, scientists reported an underwater microphone fixed in nearly 100 feet of water off shore of the runway at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington, distinctly picked up the sound of the jets, at levels known to affect tiger whales’ behavior.
“To the tiger whales at that depth, the noise is about as loud as a ship 650 feet away,” said Rob Williams, lead scientist and an author on the paper.
Tiger whales use sound to find food, so underwater noise can affect their ability to get enough to eat. Lauren Kuehne, lead author on the paper, said she was surprised at just how distinct the jet noise was even deep underwater, showing the noise easily spreads to depths where Chinook Salmon, the tiger whales primary prey, are often found. “Mentally I was prepared for noise, but not for that;it was clear as a bell. It has given me a whole new appreciation. We don’t use our ears the way animals do. For them. it is life and death,” said Kuehne.
The number and duration of daily overflights, the team emphasized, also exceed those in a majority of studies that have evaluated the impacts of noise from military aircraft, worldwide.
Williams said the study demolishes the assumption that the noise of the jets doesn’t travel underwater. “The original understanding is that the noise is going to bounce off the ocean,” Williams said. “Here we show it doesn’t. The sound goes underwater. We have shown that it is noisy, and noisy enough to require paying attention to.”
28. How did researchers confirm the effect of the noise on tiger whales?
A. By adjusting the sound of jets.
B. By collecting noise underwater.
C. By observing tiger whales’ behavior.
D. By picking up tiger whales’ brainwaves.
29. Why is underwater noise dangerous to tiger whales?
A. It scares off their natural prey. B. It destroys their sense of hearing.
C. It affects their hunting activity. D. It makes them nervous underwater.
30. What does the underlined word “demolishes” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Knocks down. B. Makes up. C. Accounts for. D. Leaves out.
31. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Unknown Underwater Sound B. Irregular Airplane Noise
C Underwater Species Protection D. Non-ignorable Undersea Annoyance
【答案】28. B 29. C 30. A 31. D

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。研究表明,飞机所产生的噪声对于深水下的生物虎鲸也是有影响的,这种声音的强度会影响虎鲸的行为。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“In a paper published in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, scientists reported an underwater microphone fixed in nearly 100 feet of water off shore of the runway at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington, distinctly picked up the sound of the jets, at levels known to affect tiger whales’ behavior.(在《海洋科学与工程杂志》上发表的一篇论文中,科学家们报告说,在华盛顿州惠德比岛海军航空站跑道外近100英尺深的水下,一个固定的水下麦克风清晰地捕捉到了喷气式飞机的声音,其响度足以影响虎鲸的行为)”可知,研究人员通过收集水下噪音来确认噪音对虎鲸的影响。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Tiger whales use sound to find food, so underwater noise can affect their ability to get enough to eat.(虎鲸利用声音来寻找食物,所以水下噪音会影响它们获取足够食物的能力)”可知,水下噪音对虎鲸来说是危险的,因为它影响了它们的捕猎活动。故选C。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中“Williams said the study demolishes the assumption that the noise of the jets doesn’t travel underwater.(威廉姆斯说,这项研究demolishes喷气式飞机的噪音不会在水下传播的假设)”以及后文“The original understanding is that the noise is going to bounce off the ocean(最初的理解是,噪音会被海洋反弹回来)”可知,威廉姆斯说这项研究推翻了喷气机噪音不会在水下传播的假设,即“噪音会被海洋反弹回来”这一理解是错误的,所以demolishes意为“推翻,打倒”,与knocks down意思相近。故选A。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“On the beaches, in the deepest reaches of the backcountry — even nearly 100 feet underwater, the noise of navy training jets is unbearable for people and even endangered southern residents — tiger whales, a new scientific research shows.(新的科学研究显示,在海滩上,在内陆最偏远的地方——甚至在近100英尺深的水下,海军训练喷气式飞机的噪音对人类来说都是难以忍受的,甚至对濒危的南方生活者——虎鲸也是如此)”结合文章其他内容可知,文章主要说明了一项研究表明海军训练喷气机的噪音对人类和濒危的虎鲸来说都是难以忍受的,介绍了研究开展的过程以及噪音对虎鲸的影响。可知,D选项“不可忽视的海底烦恼”准确概括核心内容,是文章的最佳标题。故选D。
D
When facing an extremely annoying problem, we often gather a group to brainstorm, aiming to get the best ideas quickly. I love seeing it happen — except for one tiny wrinkle. Group brainstorming usually backfires.
In brainstorming meetings, many good ideas are lost — and few are gained. Extensive evidence shows that when generating ideas together, we fail to maximize collective intelligence. Surprisingly enough, individuals working alone tend to produce more and better ideas compared to brainstorming in groups.
To unearth the hidden potential in teams, instead of brainstorming, a shift to a process called “brainwriting” is more effective. Initially, you ask everyone to generate ideas independently. Next, you pool them and share them anonymously (匿名地) among the group. To preserve independent judgment, each member evaluates them on their own. Only then does the team come together to select and refine the most promising options. By developing and assessing ideas individually before choosing and detailing them, teams can surface and advance possibilities that might not get attention otherwise.
For instance, during the 2010 Chilean mine rescue, time pressing, the rescue team established a global brain writing system to crowd source independent ideas, avoiding time-consuming brainstorming. An entrepreneur offered a tiny plastic telephone that became the sole means of communicating with the miners while a 24-year-old engineer’s suggestion resulted in the creation of a specialized drill that ultimately saved the miners.
Research by organizational behavior scholar Anita Woolley and her colleagues helps to explain why this method works. They find that a key to collective intelligence is balanced participation. In brainstorming meetings, participation can easily become dominated by the most influential people. The brainwriting process ensures that all ideas are brought to the table and all voices are brought into the conversation. The goal isn’t to be the smartest person in the room — it’s to make the room smarter.
Collective intelligence begins with individual creativity, but it doesn’t end there. Individuals working alone produce greater varieties of novel ideas, both brilliant and terrible, than groups. It takes collective judgment to locate the signal within the noise and extract the best ideas.
32. Which of the following best describes “group brainstorming” according to this passage?
A. Creative. B. Productive.
C. Inefficient. D. Fundamental.
33. Why is the 2010 rescue mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To illustrate the significance of specific equipment in the rescue.
B. To show the importance of brainstorming in emergency situations.
C. To highlight the role of influential people in collective intelligence.
D. To demonstrate the effectiveness of brainwriting in generating ideas.
34. What is mainly discussed in paragraph 5?
A. The importance of collective intelligence.
B. The goal of becoming the smartest person.
C. The power of equal involvement in brainwriting.
D. The influence of powerful individuals in decision-making.
35. What is the function of collective judgment in collective intelligence?
A. Identifying the top ideas. B. Finding more good solutions.
C. Replacing individual creativity. D. Encouraging group brainstorming.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. C 35. A

On a sunny early spring morning, Anna, together with her grandchildren Julie, Fred and Erik, was playing happily in the backyard. While playing, Anna said to the kids, “I am going to plant something in the garden. Who would like to help me?”
“What are you going to plant, Grandma?” asked Julie. “I like pleasant, bright-colored roses.”
“But I like lively, big, yellow sunflowers!” said Fred.
“Well, I’m going to plant some vegetables so that we can have fresh vegetables to eat when they are ready,” said Anna.
“How long does that take?” asked Erik. He liked vegetables sometimes, especially tomatoes.
“It will take several months before anything is ready to eat,” answered Anna. The kids were surprised.
“Several months? Why would you do all that work and then have to wait so long?” asked Julie. “Why not just go to the store and buy them?”
“Patience, my sweeties! Don’t you know food always tastes best when you grow it yourself?” replied Anna. “And if all of you come to help, it won’t be too much work.”
“I’ll help you, Grandma,” offered Erik. He put down the basketball and went to look at the gardening tools Anna had laid out. “What should we do first?” Fred and Julie came over to have a look, too.
Firstly, Anna taught Erik how to use a travel (小铲子) to dig rows of small holes for the seeds. Next, she showed Julie how to pour the seeds into each hole carefully. And then it was Fred’s job to cover up the holes with soil little by little. Finally, Julie wrote the vegetable names on sticks that Erik pushed into the ground. “This way we can remember which vegetable seeds we have planted,” said Anna.
After planting everything, the kids took turns in filling up the watering pot so that Anna could make the soil nice and wet for the seeds to start to grow.
“From now on, we just water them a little each day, and with some time and sunshine, we’ll have some delicious things to eat in the summer,” said Anna.

【答案】范文
Every time the kids came to visit, they would dash into the garden as fast as possible. Not surprisingly, they were going to see how the garden was growing. After watering the vegetables, they would remove the weeds that popped up around the plants and apply organic fertilizer under Nana’s instruction if necessary. As time went by, the plants were growing taller and stronger. When they noticed the vegetables flowering and producing fruits, their eyes were sparkling like diamonds. Never had they looked forward to summer like this before. But they clearly knew that it’s worthwhile to wait for the inviting results.
Eventually, Anna said, “It was about time for the first harvest.” Hearing that, the children all jumped into the air and cheers filled the whole garden. Nana gave them each baskets and, together they gathered some of the cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes, which we’re turned into delicacies. “Who wants to help eat this fresh salad?” Nana asked. “Me!” everyone responded loudly. Tasting the salad, they thought nothing could be more delicious, because it was they who grew these vegetables. They all learned that many hands make light work and patience really pays off.

C. Underwater Species Protection D. Non-ignorable Undersea Annoyance
