After a long silence, he looked up at me. There was a firm look in his eyes. He showed that he knew it was hard, but he really wanted to keep going. The competition meant the world to him as he had been training so hard for it. He wouldn’t give up easily just because of this setback. His determination surprised me. I could see the strong will in him that refused to be defeated by difficulties. That day, as Joey stood at the starting line, he looked more determined than ever. When the whistle blew, he rushed out with all his strength. Despite his physical condition, he ran with great speed and passion. The audience cheered loudly for him. He ignored the pain and the possible failure. He just focused on running towards the finish line. Finally, he crossed it with a big smile on his face. He had proved himself and shown that nothing could stop him from chasing his dreams. 【听力原稿】 Text 1 W: Do you need some help with that report? M: I sure do. It needs to be completed by one. B Recycling is beneficial for the environment. It can also benefit a community in surprising ways. Mateo Lange, 15, knows this well. On weekends, he can be found sorting through glass and plastic bottles and aluminum cans in his hometown of Indian River, Michigan, where he leads a community recycling program. Mateo launched the program in 2020 when he was just 11 and in the sixth grade, playing baseball with the Northern Michigan Cyclones, a new team that needed funds for traveling to tournaments. Mateo came up with a plan to deal with this need. “There were cans and bottles always thrown around the road,” he recalled. In Michigan, these can be collected and exchanged for cash. With his dad’s help, Mateo started a bottle and can drive. It raised $7,500. “We collected so much money in just a few weeks,” he says. “So I thought, why not keep this going as long as we can?” Since then, Mateo says, his recycling effort has raised $350,000 and helped at least 50 local youth groups. It has also prevented more than 2 million bottles and cans from littering the roadside and polluting Michigan’s lakes and rivers. In 2023, Mateo was awarded a Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. “It feels humbling,” Mateo says, when asked about all he’s accomplished with his cleanup effort. “I am happy knowing that all these teams and clubs and kids around the community are benefitting.” Mateo believes everyone can— and should— be of service. “Just do a little bit to help make the world a little bit of a better place,” he says. “Be creative,” he adds. “Have an idea and build on it.” 24. What motivated Mateo Lange to start his recycling program? A. He wanted to clean up his community. B. His team needed money to travel to tournaments. C. He was inspired by his father’s love for the environment. D. He was competing for the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. 25. How did Mateo’s recycling program benefit his community? A. It created jobs for local residents. B. It helped build new recreational facilities. C. It reduced the need for new drink suppliers. D. It prevented pollution of Michigan’s lakes and rivers. 26. What’s Mateo’s attitude toward his achievements? A. Proud and excited. B. Humble and satisfied. C. Tired and stressed. D. Calm and unconcerned. 27. What does Mateo suggest others should do to make a positive impact? A. Start a recycling program like his. B. Donate money to local charities. C. Be creative and build on their ideas. D. Volunteer for community events. C Tourists across China have enjoyed a chain of cultural events from traditional to modern, and discovered new destinations during this year’s five-day May Day holiday. Items on China’s traditional intangible cultural heritage list proved to be popular with travelers in many regions. In Lantian county, northwest China’s Shanxi Province, tourists were amazed by the art of Dawaz, which means aerial tightrope (空中钢丝) walking in the Uygur language. Meanwhile, in east China’s Changzhou City, music festivals attracted huge crowds of travelers, and local authorities introduced measures to ensure the comfort of visitors. They arranged 500 coaches for long-distance travel, set up more than 10,000 free parking spaces and extended the operation hours of the subway network until 11:30 p. m. And it’s not just big cities that drew in visitors during this holiday. Holiday makers decided to go for natural views, less-crowded scenic spots, and cost-effective travel experiences. Data from Chinese travel booking platform Ctrip showed that orders for fourth-tier and below cities increased by 140 percent on a yearly basis, outperforming those in first and second-tier cities. Wu Sa, deputy director of the Economic Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, expressed belief that the popularity of usual major destinations like Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Hangzhou and Chengdu is not decreasing, but explained that a good number of travelers are looking to diversify the range of their travels, towards new and previously lesser-known places. Scientific and space projects have also been a hit travel destination this week, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China to the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope in the southwestern province of Guizhou. “I mainly wanted to take my child to appreciate some of China’s leading space technology and the development trend of big data, so that he can understand the advanced technology of our motherland,” said a tourist named Hu Wannping. 28. China’s Traditional Intangible Cultural Heritage D Proper questioning has become a lost art. The curious four-year-old asks a lot of questions—incessant streams of “Why?” and “Why not?” might sound familiar—but as we grow older, our questioning decreases. In a recent survey of more than 200 of our clients, we found that those with children estimated that 70-80% of their kids’ dialogues with others were comprised of questions. But those same clients said that only 15-25% of their own interactions consisted of questions. Why the drop off? Think back to your time growing up and in school. Chances are that you received the most recognition or reward when you got the correct answers. Later in life, that motivator continues. At work, we often reward those who answer questions, not those who ask them. Questioning conventional wisdom can even lead to being distanced, or considered a threat. Because expectations for decision-making have gone from “get it done soon” to “get it done now” to “it should have been done yesterday”, we tend to jump to conclusions instead of asking more questions. And the unfortunate side effect of not asking enough questions is poor decision-making. That’s why it’s vital that we slow down and take the time to ask more and better questions. At best, we’ll arrive at better conclusions. At worst, we’ll avoid a lot of rework later on. Aside from not speaking up enough, many professionals don’t think about how different types of questions can lead to different outcomes. We should lead a conversation by asking the right kinds of questions, based on the problem we’re trying to solve. In some cases, we’ll want to expand our view of the problem rather than keeping it narrowly focused. In others, we may want to challenge basic assumptions or confirm our understanding in order to feel more confident in our conclusions. Therefore, asking the right kinds of questions is what counts in achieving a goal. 32. What does the underlined word “incessant” in paragraph 1 most probably mean? A. Simple. B. Random. C. Constant. D. Annoying. 33. What accounts for the decline of questioning in adulthood? A. One poses a threat to the company if they ask questions. B. Adults don’t get as many chances as they did in childhood. C. Those who question popular beliefs are thought to be wise. D. Those asking questions don’t always get positive feedback. 34. What can we infer from paragraph 3? A. Redoing is unavoidable despite thoughtful questions. B. Decisions made in a hurry may turn out to be wrong. C. Better questions can surely bring desirable outcomes. D. More attention should be paid to making conclusions. 35. What might the author continue talking about? A. Proper questions that should be raised. B. Important goals that we are to achieve. C. Right kinds of answers to the questions. D. Ways to expand our view of the problem. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) A last-minute vacation can be a wonderful surprise and an escape from the ordinary. The doctors told us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally—but would never run very well. The first three years of his life were spent in operations. By the time he was eight, people wouldn’t know he had a problem when they saw him walk. The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. We never told him that he probably wouldn’t be able to run as well as the other children. So he didn’t know. In seventh grade he decided to try out for the cross-country running team. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others—perhaps he sensed that the abilities that seemed to come naturally to so many others did not come naturally to him. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the chance to score points for the school. We didn’t tell him that he probably would never make the team, so he didn’t know. He continued to run four to five miles a day, every day — even the day he had a fever. I was worried, so I went to look for him after school. When I found him running on the track with a flushed face, I knew I had to tell him the truth. I called him over and sat him down on a bench. With a heavy heart, I told him about his condition and that it might be too much for him to keep training and participate in the competition. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Joey listened quietly, his eyes lowered._______________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ That day, as Joey stood at the starting line, he looked more determined than ever._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ( 第 1 页 共 16 页 ) 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
