Deep in the remote floodplain of Angola’s Kwando River, Kerllen Costa and his team were desperately searching for a campsite when they spotted an elder alone on a small island. As they approached, the elder questioned him, “Why were the people with you watching river birds with their telescopes?”
When he explained they were a team of scientists on an expedition(考察), the elder told him, “If you only look at the bird, you won’t be able to understand how the bird communicates with the tree and how the bird interacts with the water.” Costa asked him how he knew this and the elder replied, “Well, because how would you know what’s in a landscape — what’s its story — if there’re no people in it? It’s only the people that bring history to it.” This has guided Costa’s work at the rivers of the Angolan Highlands Water Tower: building relationships of trust with local communities.
Local communities have developed lifestyles over generations that protect and respect their homeland. Understanding what it means to protect these environments, means meeting, listening, and knowing the people who live there. So Costa often spends nights in villages listening to local elders share their beliefs on existence and has spent weeks going through remote parts of the forest with local hunters. “There were several different moments when the local people were saying, ‘Listen, you and your scientists, you might say this, but we know for sure it’s this for a reason,’” says Costa.
The human approach Costa puts at the helm(舵轮)of his team’s efforts is a big step forward in the world of conservation. “That can shock some of the more conservative ways of thinking in terms of conservation. And there still is that difficulty to try and understand we shouldn’t create a national park. Why not allow people to still wander and use the systems that they already used for the last five generations? I really feel success should be people being able to still manage their own natural heritage and still living according to their traditions,” Costa stresses.
4. What can we learn from the elder’s words in paragraph 2?
A. A landscape with people has a soul.
B. The area has rich resources of history.
C. The local ecosystem is being destroyed.
D. The telescopes disturb the birds too much.
5. What’s the key to Costa’s job?
A. Sharpening the expedition skills.
B. Following the principles of nature.
C. Having a close bond with the locals.
D. Taking field trips with a good hunter.
6. What is Costa’s attitude towards setting up à national park?
A. Indifferent. B. Confident. C. Conservative. D. Disapproval.
7. Which of the following can best describe Costa?
A. Determined and generous. B. Demanding and honest.
C. Insightful and considerate. D. Flexible and talkative.

A new University of Michigan-led international study finds that fruits and vegetables grown in urban farms and gardens have a carbon footprint that is, on average, greater than conventionally grown produce.
Urban agriculture(UA)is becoming increasingly popular worldwide as a way to make cities and urban food systems more sustainable. By some estimates, between 20% and 30% of the global urban population engages in some form of urban agriculture. However, its carbon footprint remains understudied. Most previously published studies have focused on high-tech, energy-intensive forms of UA — such as vertical farms and rooftop greenhouses.
The study used data from 73 urban farms and gardens in five countries and three types of urban agriculture sites were analyzed: urban farms, individual gardens, and collective gardens. Farmers and gardeners at urban agriculture sites in France, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States were recruited(招募)as citizen scientists and used daily diary entries to record inputs and harvests from their food-growing sites throughout a whole year. On average, food produced through urban agriculture gave off 0.42 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalents(等量物)per serving, six times higher than the 0.07 kilograms carbon dioxide equivalents per serving of conventionally grown produce.
Inputs to the urban agriculture sites fell into three main categories: infrastructure(such as the raised beds in which food is grown, or pathways between plots), supplies(including fertilizer and weed-blocking fabric), and irrigation water. “Most of the climate impacts at urban farms are driven by the materials used to construct them,” said study co-lead author Benjamin Goldstein. “These farms typically only operate for a few years or a decade, so the greenhouse gases used to produce those materials are not used effectively. Conventional agriculture, on the other hand, is very efficient and hard to compete with.”
However, in a survey conducted for the study, the researchers identified a practice crucial to making low-tech urban agriculture more competitive — UA farmers and gardeners dominantly reported improved mental health, diet, and social networks. While increasing these “nonfood outputs” of UA does not reduce its carbon footprint, “growing spaces which maximize social benefits can outcompete conventional agriculture,” according to the study authors.
8. Which aspect of UA was underestimated in the past?
A. Its global scale. B. Its carbon footprint.
C. Its special form. D. Its environmental benefit.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The upside of urban agriculture.
B. The way the study was carried out.
C. The types of urban agriculture sites.
D. The role the farmers involved play.
10. What might make UA more competitive according to Benjamin Goldstein?
A. Extending the lifetimes of UA infrastructure.
B. Improving the water supply for UA irrigation.
C. Guaranteeing the source of data collected.
D. Giving a second life to conventional farms.
11. Which of the following would the study authors agree with?
A. Urban farming is still worth people’s efforts.
B. Citizens will turn to conventional agriculture.
C. Nonfood outputs of urban agriculture are illogical.
D. Rooftop farms produce more carbon than gardens.
D
For over a decade, scientist Peter Turchin has worked to create a database of human history—Seshat: the Global History Databank. Recently, Turchin and computer scientist Maria del Rio-Chanona turned their attention to artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, questioning whether these advanced models could aid historians and archaeologists (考古学家) in interpreting the past.
Large language models (LLMs) , such as ChatGPT, have been hugely successful in some fields. Using Seshat as a benchmark (基准), researchers tested LLMs on questions requiring graduate or expert-level knowledge. “A key component of our benchmark is that we not only test whether these LLMs can identify correct facts, but also ask whether a fact can be proven or inferred from indirect evidence,” Turchin said.
The study revealed that OpenAI models like GPT-4 performed better for regions such as Latin America and the Caribbean, while Llama models excelled in Northern America. However, both systems underperformed in Sub-Saharan Africa, with Llama also showing weaker results for Oceania. LLMs demonstrated greater accuracy when addressing questions about ancient history, particularly between 8,000 BCE and 3,000 BCE, but struggled with more recent events, especially from 1,500 CE to the present. LLMs performed best on questions related to legal systems and social complexity, but they struggled significantly with topics such as discrimination and social mobility.
“I thought the AI chatbots would do a lot better” said Hauser, corresponding author of the study. “History is often viewed as facts, but sometimes interpretation is necessary to make sense of it. They’re great for basic facts, but when it comes to more nuanced historical inquiry, they’re not yet up to the task.” Among the tested models, GPT-4 Turbo ranked highest with 46% accuracy, while Llama-3.1-8B scored the lowest at 33.6%.
The researchers aim to address the shortcomings revealed in this study by expanding the dataset and refining the benchmark. Hauser emphasized plans to contain more data from underrepresented regions, especially in the Global South, and to include more complex historical questions. “We also look forward to testing more recent LLM models, such as o3, to see if they can bridge the gaps identified in this study,” Hauser said.
12. What did the study aim to explore concerning AI models?
A. The function in strengthening Seshat.
B. The understanding of human history.
C. The accuracy in recording history.
D. The efficiency in identifying facts.
13. How did LLMs perform in the test?
A. Their capabilities are non-specific.
B. They show strong historical competence.
C. They’re in line with experts’ expectations.
D. Their performance varied across time periods.
14. What does the underlined word “nuanced” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Accurate. B. Plentiful. C. Detailed. D. Straightforward.
15. What will the researchers probably do next?
A. Explain a good benchmark.
B. Create more new AI models.
C. Include more historians to participate.
D. Balance the data from different regions.

In life, we spend a lot of our time either at home or at work — or school if we’re a student. But what about all the other places we hang out when we’re not at these places?
Often referred to as third places, these are the spaces we occupy when we’re socializing with friends or relatives, or enjoying time on our own but in the presence of other people. ____16____ They may include theaters, gyms, cafes, bars, parks, libraries, or friends’ houses where everyone spends the most time.
“Third places play an important role in our lives by offering a break from the demands of work-home life,” explains Elena Touroni, a consultant psychologist. ____17____ “Being part of a community and feeling connected is essential for good mental health. It can even increase our self-respect,” she adds. ____18____ There are many reasons for this, including the rising cost of living, car dependency, and the ease with which we can now do so many things at home, straight from our computer.
____19____ We need to take care of our shared spaces, as well as organizing activities there and taking part in gatherings. Third places can transform a neighborhood into a welcoming home, but only if we take ownership of them. With many other things in day-to-day life, finding the time to visit third places isn’t always easy. ____20____ Successful third places are those that promote active, rather than passive interaction, and where people are welcome to drop in, and make conversation with others, whether they know them well or not.
It might be unrealistic to expect us to spend hours in third places every day, but even just short amounts of time when we’ re able to can go a long way.
A. These third places can be many and varied.
B. What can we do to help sustain third places ourselves?
C. Unfortunately, the popularity of the third place is in decline.
D. Even if people would not go there, it can be easier said than done.

Mrs. Garcia couldn’t understand why her son, Mike, came home from school every day with an empty stomach. She had always been careful in preparing Mike’s lunchbox. The food was more than enough to satisfy a young boy’s hunger. But recently Mike often returned home looking hungry. It wasn’t until one evening, when Mrs. Garcia noticed Mike rummaging (翻找) through the kitchen for food, that she realized something was wrong.
“Mike, didn’t you have your lunch today?” Mrs. Garcia asked, watching her son open the fridge and grab a burger.
Mike looked up at her, his eyes wide with fear. “I……I guess I did,” he said in a quiet voice, taking a bite of the burger.
Mrs. Garcia felt confused. “Really? You’ve been saying that for days now. What’s really going on?”
Mike’s shoulders drooped (垂下) as he looked away. “I don’t know, Mum. I just feel hungry.”
Mrs. Garcia’s concern deepened. She knew Mike was a healthy and active boy who usually had a good appetite, and this sudden shift in behavior was alarming. After discussing it with her husband, she decided it was time to uncover what was happening at school.
“Mrs. Garcia, I’ve noticed that Mike seems anxious during lunch,” Clive, Mike’s teacher, said. “I’ll pay closer attention to him and observe how he interacts with his classmates. There might be something we’re overlooking.”
Mrs. Garcia nodded, feeling a ray of hope. “Thank you, Clive. I just want to make sure he’s okay.” She understood it would take time, but she was determined to discover why Mike was struggling and to help him overcome whatever was troubling him.
“We’ll get to the bottom of this. Together, we can help Mike feel more comfortable at school,” Clive smiled.

C Having a close bond with the locals.
D. Taking field trips with a good hunter.
6 What is Costa’s attitude towards setting up à national park?
A. Indifferent. B. Confident. C. Conservative. D. Disapproval.
7. Which of the following can best describe Costa?
A. Determined and generous. B. Demanding and honest.
C. Insightful and considerate. D. Flexible and talkative.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. C

【答案】8. B 9. B 10. A 11. A

根据第二段“Urban agriculture(UA)is becoming increasingly popular worldwide (城市农业(UA)在全球范围内正变得日益流行)”和“However, its carbon footprint remains understudied.(然而,它的碳足迹仍缺乏研究)”可知,城市农业的碳足迹在过去并未得到充分研究。故选B。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“The study used data from 73 urban farms and gardens in five countries and three types of urban agriculture sites were analyzed: urban farms, individual gardens, and collective gardens. Farmers and gardeners at urban agriculture sites in France, Germany, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States were recruited as citizen scientists and used daily diary entries to record inputs and harvests from their food-growing sites throughout a whole year.(这项研究使用了来自五个国家73个城市农场和菜园的数据,并分析了三种类型的城市农业场地:城市农场、个人菜园和集体菜园。来自法国、德国、波兰、英国和美国的城市农业场地的农民和园丁被招募为公民科学家,并使用每日日记记录他们全年食物种植场地的投入和收获)”可知,第三段主要讲了研究是如何进行的,包括数据的来源、分析的城市农业场地类型以及参与研究的农民和园丁如何记录数据。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段““Most of the climate impacts at urban farms are driven by the materials used to construct them,” said study co-lead author Benjamin Goldstein. “These farms typically only operate for a few years or a decade, so the greenhouse gases used to produce those materials are not used effectively. Conventional agriculture, on the other hand, is very efficient and hard to compete with.”(研究报告的共同主要作者Benjamin Goldstein说:“城市农场的大部分气候影响是由建造它们所使用的材料驱动的。 故选A。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“While increasing these “nonfood outputs” of UA does not reduce its carbon footprint, “growing spaces which maximize social benefits can outcompete conventional agriculture,” according to the study authors.(尽管增加城市农业的“非食品产出”并不能减少其碳足迹,但研究报告的作者表示,“最大化社会效益的增长空间可以超越传统农业。”)”可知,研究报告的作者认为,尽管城市农业的碳足迹可能较高,但它在心理健康、饮食和社会网络方面带来的“非食品产出”使其具有竞争力,因此城市农业仍然值得人们努力。故选A。

“I thought the AI chatbots would do a lot better,” said Hauser, corresponding author of the study.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. D

E. She also emphasizes how third places can give us a sense of connection.
F. However, there are some things that third places can do to help themselves.
G. From developing creativity to building community, third places have lots of benefits.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】As lunchtime approached, Clive stood at the classroom door. He saw Mike walk confidently over to a quiet boy who always sat alone in the corner. Mike greeted him with a smile and handed him part of his lunch, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. The boy accepted it gratefully, and they began chatting warmly, their laughter filling the room. Clive realized that Mike had been sharing his lunch regularly to help someone in need, which explained why he was always hungry when he came home.
Mrs. Garcia saw Clive, Mike, and another boy chatting happily at the school gate. She walked up and found Mike’s smile brighter than usual. Clive explained Mike’s kind gesture—sharing his lunch with the classmate, Jacob, whose family was going through a tough time. Mrs. Garcia felt a mix of pride and relief, hugging Mike tightly. She promised to prepare lunches for both boys every day. Clive added that they had organized a small lunch club to support students in need, and Mike was happy to be part of it. Mrs. Garcia’s heart swelled with admiration for her son’s empathy and responsibility.
