I started working at a new company. A reorganization(重组) was happening
6 I got there, and people felt stressed. I decided to do something about it.
I found some blue paper in the copy room. I 7 little paper pools from the blue paper. I made eighteen pools with little paper lily pads(睡莲浮叶), 8 for everyone to go home, and dropped them around the office.
And then I 9 180 tiny colorful plastic ducks around the office. I
came into work the next day like 10 had happened. And I quietly watched everyone in the office. I noticed that they slowly 11 that they were surrounded (包围) by ducks. Some people still didn’t know where the pools were from. I told my workmates the truth at last, because everyone was 12 if they could take the ducks and I needed to tell them YES!
Over the next few weeks, the ducks moved from the pools to people’s desks. Many people started 13 color sets (系列), while others got to make homes for their pet ducks. A few of the 14 ponds were moved to people’s desks to house their duck families. One workmate told me she had ducks to represent family members. Another came to me looking for a red duck because it was the only 15 they were missing from their set. People from other buildings started coming over to see the ponds and take a duck. Like 16 , they curiously eyed the ducks and carefully picked their favourites.
But it didn’t end there. Soon other 17 started showing up in the ponds. There were rabbits one week and frogs the next. 18 , turtles, dogs, cats —there was a new wave every few days, seemingly all from different people. 19 , it wasn’t I that was doing it. At this point it is almost 20 to find a desk that doesn’t have at least one tiny animal on it.
Small acts of kindness and tiny gifts at work started a kindness revolution(变革), creating a wave of
goodwill.

The beautiful skill of leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉刺绣) in Tongren city, Guizhou province, has made Guizhou embroidery one of the main types of embroidery in China.
Leaf-vein embroidery dates back to the Song Dynasty(960-1279) and has been used to share messages among various ethnic groups in southwestern China.
Yang Li, a master of this craft (工艺), has combined traditional embroidery styles from the Miao, Tujia and Dong ethnic groups in her work on leaves, mixing traditional design with modern techniques.
Leaf-vein embroidery holds high value as a collectible art due to its complex (复杂 的 ) process, which includes choosing and drying the leaves, then creating and embroidering the patterns.
Yang noted that in the past decade, only around 20 people in Tongren have been able to fully complete the whole leaf-embroidery process on their own. Because of the long, hard work involved and the low number of high-quality pieces made, it’s challenging to keep this traditional skill alive. “ I have introduced this style to universities, communities and villages and chosen skilled embroiderers to learn leaf-vein embroidery, but very few have kept going,” Yang said.
In 2011, she opened a processing center, creating jobs for more than 500 women, including women from villages and people with disabilities. As a result, almost every embroiderer now has a collection of handmade items that could fill a museum.
“I feel a duty and a sense of urgency (紧迫感). In my lifetime, I must improve and pass on this craft,” she
said.
In 2022, Yang set up the Guizhou Embroidery Intangible Cultural Heritage Industry Base and has since used social media to share leaf-vein embroidery through short videos with her student, Yang Xinyu. “Leaf-vein embroidery is a treasure,” said Yang Xinyu. “As a young person inspired by Teacher Yang Li, I am devoting myself to carrying on this craft and hope that more young people will return to their hometowns to continue its legacy.”

A. To make a living.
B. To decorate clothing.
C. To record historical events.
D. To share messages among ethnic groups.
( )25. Why is it challenging to keep the leaf-vein embroidery skill alive?
A. It has little artistic value. B. It requires rare materials.
C. It requires great skill and effort. D. It depends on older artisans.
( )26. Which of the following best describes Yang Li?
A. Modest and curious. B. Generous and humorous.
C. Creative and responsible. D. Strong willed and careful.

Chinese architect ( 建 筑 师 ) Liu Jiakun, 68, was awarded the 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize on March 4, becoming the second winner from China to receive the highest honor in the field of architecture. Based in Chengdu, Liu’s career lasts for forty years with more than 30 projects. He set up Jiakun Architects in 1999 and has built plenty of work, from small, beautifully designed museums to large business buildings and city plans.
Instead of following the same style, Liu’s projects include local color and depend on “ low-tech” simplicity to achieve beauty, a magazine reported. “He never depends on a recurring (反复出现的) method. Instead, he evaluates (评估) the specific characteristics and requirements of each project differently,” the jury (评审团) said when announcing the award.
One of Liu’s most well-known projects was the so-called “rebirth bricks” he created after the terrible Wenchuan earthquake in 2008. To help with rebuilding, Liu made bricks using local wheat fiber, cement (水泥) and rubble (瓦砾) from fallen buildings. More than just recycling, these bricks stood for the rebirth of the material and “the rebirth of the community’s spirit at a time of national mourning”, reported The Guardian. These bricks were later used in his other projects, including the Shuijingfang Museum in Chengdu and the Novartis medicine company in Shanghai.
Liu’s design also pay attention to common people. This is shown in his largest project, West Village, a five-floor city complex (综合体) completed in 2015 in Chengdu. The complex includes a soccer field, a market, and paths for cyclists and walkers. With grass growing through holes in the bricks, the project celebrates “the energy of ‘everydayness’,” wrote Austin Williams in 2017. It has become a popular place for city people to spend their free time.
“The purpose of architecture is to create a beautiful, just and dignified (有尊严的) living environment. People’s real lives, happiness and dignity are what we work for,” Liu told China Daily.
( )27. How many projects were the “rebirth bricks” used in?
A. 8. B. 4. C. 3. D. 30.
( )28. What does Liu Jiakun do to make his projects unusual?
① He insists on the same style.
② He pays attention to local colour.
③ He mixes tradition with modernity.
④ He celebrates the energy of common people.
⑤ He prefers “low-tech” simplicity to create beauty.
A. ①③④ B. ②④⑤ C. ①④⑤ D. ②③④
( )29. What does the underlined word “ it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The energy of “everydayness” . B. Liu’s largest project, West Village.
C. A market in a five-floor city complex. D. A soccer field in a five-floor city complex.
( )30. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. A project called West Village. B. A project called the “rebirth bricks” .
C. An architect famous for recycling bricks. D. An architect famous for unusual styles.

Cook was making little “tuk-tuk-tuk” sounds. Sadie had her hand over her mouth. Hans was trying so hard to understand. Only Godber’s man was enjoying himself. It was his story.
“What’s wrong? What’s happened?”
“There’s been an awful accident,” cook said. “A man’s been killed.”
“A man killed! Where? How? When?”
But Godber’s man wanted to tell the story.
“You know those little cottages (小屋) just down the road from here, miss?” Of course she knew them. “Well, there’s a young man called Scott living there. He has a horse and cart. Something frightened the
horse in town this morning, the cart (马车) turned over, and Scott fell in the road on the back of his head.
Killed.”
“Dead!” Laura stared at Godber’s man.
“Dead when they picked him up,” Godber’s man said. “They were taking the body home as I was coming here.” Then he said, “He’s left a wife and five little ones.”
“Jose, come here!” Laura took her sister’s hand and pulled her across the kitchen and through the door.
“Jose,” she said, “how can we stop everything?”
“Stop everything, Laura!” cried Jose. “What do you mean?”
“Stop the garden party, of course. ”
“Stop the garden party? My dear Laura, don’t be unreasonable. Of course we can’t stop the party.
Nobody expects us to. Don’t be so silly.”
“But we can’t possibly have a garden party with a man dead just outside the front gate.”
That really was silly, because the Sheridans ’ house was on a hill, and the cottages were right down at the bottom of the hill. There was a wide road between them. True, they were still much too near. They were not suitable neighbours for people like the Sheridans.
The cottages were ugly little low brown things. Nothing but rubbish grew in their gardens. Even the smoke coming from their chimneys( 烟囱) looked poor. The people who lived in them lived by washing other people’s clothes, or mending shoes or cleaning chimneys. And they all had far too many children.
When the Sheridan children were little, they were not allowed to go near the cottages, for fear that they heard bad language or caught some awful disease. But now that they were grown up, Laura and Laurie sometimes walked past. It was dirty and unpleasant, but Laura and Laurie believed that they should experience all sides of life. They must go everywhere; the must see everything.
“Think how that poor woman will feel if she hears a band playing,” said Laura.
“Oh, Laura!” Jose began to be seriously angry. “If you want to stop a band every time someone has an accident, you’re going to have a very difficult life. I’m just as sorry about it as you are. ”
( )31. What were Scott’s living conditions like?
A. Poor. B. Safe. C. Modern. D. Comfortable.
( )32. What can we learn about the Sheridan family?
A. The Sheridan children knew Scott well.
B. The Sheridan family lived a challenging life.
C. The Sheridan family planned to have a party.
D. The Sheridan children liked going near the cottages.
( )33. Which is the correct order of the following events?
a. Godber’s man told the story.
b. Scott died in a cart accident.
c. Laura and Laurie sometimes walked past.
d. Laura suggested cancelling the garden party.
A. c-d-b-a B. c-b-a-d C. b-c-a-d D. d-c-b-a
( )34. What does the underlined sentence “There was a wide road between them” symbolize(象征) ?
A. It symbolizes Scott lived far from Laura.
B. It symbolizes the poor lived near the rich.
C. It symbolizes the poor received care from the rich.
D. It symbolizes the poor was separated from the rich.
( )35. What might the next paragraph of the passage be about?
A. How Jose had fun in the garden party.
B. How Laura succeeded in stopping the party.
C. How Laura invited Scott’s children to the party.
D. How Laurie stopped his two sisters from fighting.

The UN has announced 2025 as the year of glacier(冰川). It has also set March 21, 2025 as the first World Day for Glaciers. 36
Glaciers are made of ice and snow that slowly move over land. Over time, layers(层) of snow build up and turn into glacier ice.
Glaciers have shaped mountains over Earth’s history. 37 But glaciers don’t just affect the land.
When glaciers melt(融化), they provide nutrients(养分) for lakes, rivers and oceans. 38 As glaciers melt, they also create homes for plants and animals along streams.
39 The UN said that about 10 percent of the world’s land is covered by around
200,000 glaciers, storing about 70 percent of Earth’s fresh water. In places like the Himalayas, Karakoram and Hindu Kush mountains, millions of people depend on glaciers for water. These glaciers feed big rivers like the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra.
40 Many glaciers have disappeared. For example, Colombia has lost 90 percent of its glaciers since the mid-19th century. If temperatures rise by 1.5 to 4℃, glaciers could lose much of them by 2100.
If snow and ice in mountain areas continue to disappear, there will be less water for drinking and farming and more pressure on local ecosystems. Floods will also be more dangerous because of growing glacial lakes.
A. They are still moving and changing landscapes in many places today.
B. The goal is to encourage everyone to help protect glaciers, which are important for life in the future.
C. In some areas, glaciers are important water sources for people and wildlife.
D. These nutrients help create the base of the food chain in oceans and rivers.
E. Most of the world’s glaciers are in the polar regions. (极地地区)
F. However, climate change is causing serious problems to glaciers.

During this year’s summer holiday, I flew from Beijing to London, the UK. When I arrived in London, I felt 41 stressed by the seven-hour time difference, the new language, the buildings and the lively crowds at the train station. Everything was so different and strange, which made me worried about my short 42 there. I joined a girls ’ middle school and learned many new things from the different kinds of 43 which covered many subjects. I was lonely and helpless 44 because my vocabulary (词汇) was poor. The other girls hugged me and shouted, “Hey, Eileen, you did an amazing job!” From then on, I felt truly happy and relaxed, and I really began to fit in with others. That 49 helped me see the bridge between London and my hometown, Tianjin—a bridge built with care and love. You stick a stamp on an envelope ( 信 封), and then it travels across the world to find another person. Stamps help people keep in t 51 with their friends and families. They have played an important r 52 in people’s lives for a long time now. People have a special day for stamps—October 9th is World Post Day.
Before stamps, people didn’t pay for the letters they sent. I 53 , they paid for the letters they got. The Penny Black, the world’s first stamp, was c 54 in Britain in 1840. It shows a picture of Queen Victoria, who became queen at the age of 18. This stamp made sending letters e 55 as people could pay the money before putting them in the post.
Do you know h 56 the back of a stamp is sticky? The earliest stamps didn’t have sticky backs. In the past, people used paste (浆糊) sometimes. But usually they had to pin (钉住) stamps onto letters! Later, stamp makers added sticky glue on the back because using pins or paste made letters messy and d 57 . Now we can just wet the stamp and press it down, which made sending letters much faster and cleaner!
Years ago, sending letters used to be the most i 58 way to communicate with other people. It seemed that everyone had stamps on hand. A 59 few people send letters now, stamp collecting is still one of the world’s most popular hobbies. Through stamp clubs, people can q 60 find interesting new stamps and proudly add them to their collections. These tiny paper treasures continue to tell stories of the past while bringing joy to collectors today.

On Sept l, Yao Miao made history as the first Chinese woman to win the 50-kilometer race at the famous Utra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB, 环勃朗峰超级越野耐力赛). This adds to her earlier success in 2018, when she became the first Chinese woman to win the 100-km race at the UTMB.
The UTMB is one of the world’s most well-known trail running events, taking place every year in the beautiful Mont-Blanc area, covering parts of France, Italy, and Switzerland. This year, Yao completed a 57-km course with a top elevation (海拔) of 3,500 meters. “I started off a bit slow, but after 20km. I felt stronger, especially on the downhills. During trail running, finding the right pace is like solving a math problem—you must plan carefully for long distances,” Yao explained. She kept a steady rhythm on flat paths and saved energy for steep climbs.
Her love for running began in her childhood in the countryside of Guizhou. Her school was four kilometers from home, and she walked the distance four times a day. Growing up in the mountains gave her a toughness (韧性) that later helped her as a runner. At 16, she joined her city’s sports school, starting her formal training. In 2019, Yao was recommended to join the Hubei provincial team as a professional marathon runner. She was later accepted into the sports department of Central China Normal University in
2020. To balance professional training with her studies, Yao trains in Yunnan, running about 30 kilometers a day, and in her free time, she takes online courses there. Though she doesn’t have much time to explore the university, Yao said. “When I have time, I will fully enjoy it.”
