More recently, I had the same struggles as everyone else with social media. I’m not sure precisely how many hours I’ve spent carefully composing replies to obvious trolls (恶意挑衅的帖子) or worrying about life because I’m being force-fed the opinions of the worst people in the world. Worse, nothing seemed to keep me away: I could set myself time limits, use blockers, delete my accounts, but somehow, I would keep slipping back, spending the last 20 minutes of every evening despairing about the state of the world.
Eventually, I had an idea. In nutrition circles, there’s a strategy called “crowding out” your diet: adding in more and more healthy food until there’s simply no room for the junk. Eat four eggs at breakfast and an apple as a morning snack, and a mid-morning creamy cookie won’t cross your mind. I decided to do the same with books: by committing to reading for two or three hours a day, I would leave myself with no time for online storms.
But I found Jane Austen was my Mount Everest when I kicked off with her Emma. I had to force myself through the first two chapters: page after page of character names, relationships and complex asides (旁白), and... I’ve always been a pretty good reader, but there’s a difference between reading the latest pop-sci bestseller and truly understanding the 19th-century great. Not long after that, though, something clicked. Suddenly I was... enjoying Austen.
So, it worked. These days, if I get anxious after 10:00 pm, it’s about the injustices of the Victorian time, rather than the micro plastics in my water bottle or any annoying pile-on I read online. Nowadays for a happy hour or so before bed, I get thoroughly lost in the cares of someone who lived a century or more ago.
4. What did the author struggle with recently?
A. Inability to identify trolls. B. Overuse of social media.
C. Difficulty in servicing an account. D. Anxiety about political issues.
5. What does the author mainly intend to do in paragraph 2?
A. Illustrate a practical solution. B. Recommend a dietary approach.
C. Describe a personal experience. D. Explain a philosophical concept.
6. Which best describes the author’s initial feeling about reading Emma?
A. It was an easy read. B. It was an escape from reality.
C. It was an uphill struggle. D. It was a rewarding experience.
7. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Classics Brings Back Confidence
B. The Necessity to Say No to Trolls
C. Screen to Page: Jane Austen Shows a Way Out
D. A Chance Encounter: Jane Austen Is My Mount Everest

Last December, researchers at the National Ignition Facility(NIF)had made a breakthrough in fusion (核聚变)energy, the same chemical process that powers the stars and our sun. They had succeeded in producing the first laboratory fusion reaction that produces more energy than it takes to cause the reaction. It made headlines around the world.
At extremely high temperatures and pressure, the atoms break into their components — nuclei (原子核) and electrons. This kind of positive nuclei and negative electrons is referred to as plasma It is considered the fourth state of matter, the other three being solid, liquid and gas. Fusion is a process that takes place in the plasma state. The process of fusion produces a huge amount of energy which, in turn, causes further fusion reactions.
Our sun is incredibly efficient in producing fusion energy; its huge mass creates the pressure and temperatures needed to keep the reaction going. Earth can’t recreate the high pressure and temperature conditions of the sun, so scientists must find techniques in laboratories to start the reaction.
The NIF experiment successfully proved that fusion isn’t just a theoretical concept: we are able to create an energy source that is self-sustaining. Fusion also has the advantage — it does not cause radioactive waste.
However, despite billions of dollars of government funding put into fusion research, we are still decades away from fusion-produced electricity. Humans have produced fusion reactions in the past, with nuclear bombs. But in bombs, the energy is released too quickly. Scientists will need to figure out how to release energy in a controlled and consistent manner for regular use.
Even if we can overcome challenges in the development, will fusion be able to compete with solar and wind power for cost and availability? The future of fusion may not be clear at the moment, but it is truly brilliant for science and society to see the power of the sun come to life in a lab setting.
8. What facts have we learned about the first laboratory fusion reaction?
A. It was a big success. B. It escaped public attention.
C. It produced less energy than expected. D. It introduced the fourth state of matter.
9. What is a big advantage of fusion energy?
A. It depends on the sun. B. It can be clean energy.
C. It is an unexpected energy source. D. It works under normal conditions.
10. What can be implied about producing fusion energy in paragraph 5?
A. It faces some challenges now. B. It isn’t supported by governments.
C. It may cause very dangerous consequences. D. It cannot compete with solar and wind power.
11. Which statement would the author most likely agree with?
A. The future of fusion is clear and bright.
B. Fusion energy will be the main energy one day.
C. The present achievements in fusion energy are remarkable.
D. The experimental techniques are essential to producing fusion energy.

Although daydreaming is often seen as an enjoyable escape from the dull, tough or repetitive aspects of everyday life, the act of “pleasurable thinking” is more challenging and less satisfying than many people might think, according to a growing body of research.
Years ago, Nicholas Buttrick and his team conducted a study. The researchers asked, “Which is more enjoyable: trying to think enjoyable thoughts or doing daily individual activities?” They found that of the 2,557 participants from 12 sites in 11 countries, most people, across cultures, enjoyed engaging in individual activities more than thinking freely and entertaining themselves with their thoughts as best they could. “Participants randomly assigned to do something reported significantly greater gratification than that of participants randomly assigned to think for pleasure, and the results were consistent in every country,” Buttrick concluded.
Recently, a follow-up study led by Erin Westgate, a psychology professor at the University of Florida, investigated why so many people do not choose to think for pleasure, and when directed to do so, struggle to concentrate successfully.
The researchers started by providing participants with specific examples of meaningful topics and then instructed them to think “meaningful” thoughts. Surprisingly, they discovered that asking people to think meaningful thoughts actually made daydreaming much less enjoyable than freely thinking about unguided thoughts. “I was so confused,” Westgate said. But after analyzing which meaningful topics participants reported thinking about when asked to think about something meaningful, she realized that “they were heavy stuff”.
Westgate wants to help people recapture that daydream state, which may boost wellness. Although improving daydream states can be difficult, she recommends priming (指引) the brain to think about topics that are both enjoyable and meaningful.
“It’s something that sets us apart. Thinking for pleasure allows us to imagine new realities,” Westgate said. “But that kind of thinking requires practice. As you build your ability to daydream, you’ll have a source of enjoyable thoughts during stressful times. The next time you’re walking, instead of pulling out your phone, try it.”
12. What is the common understanding of “pleasurable thinking” among people?
A. It is a form of relaxation. B. It is a usual daily practice.
C. It is a sign of wasting time. D. It is a hard but rewarding activity.
13. What is the closest meaning to the underlined word “gratification” in paragraph 2?
A. Success. B. Boredom. C. Hesitation. D. Enjoyment.
14. Which of the following made Westgate puzzled?
A. The research methods.
B. The joy levels of the participants.
C. The participants’ choice of meaningful topics.
D. The lack of a clear definition of “meaningful thoughts”.
15. What advice does Westgate give to people?
A. Focusing on new realities.
B. Engaging in physical exercise.
C. Keeping daydreaming during tough times.
D. Daydreaming on both pleasant and significant subjects.

On a freezing cold December morning, I led Martin to the third-grade classroom I was in charge of. He lowered his head, which I thought was due to his shyness. Also, I noticed him wearing a pair of shoes apparently outgrowing his shoe size. “Maybe he comes from a financially disadvantaged family,” I thought to myself.
However, it was also hard to understand Martin’s behavior. When asked to make a self- introduction on the platform, he simply spelled his name, leaving the other students confused. Besides, Martin’s study habits and skills were nowhere to be seen. Unable to recognize some English letters, he even failed to write a short essay according to given instructions.
Therefore, I wondered whether a special school teaching kids with autism (自闭症) was more suitable for him. I looked through his previous grade reports, only to find that his academic performances in the first grade were great. To figure out what happened to him, I decided to visit his former school and communicate with the headteacher. I learned that Martin’s mom had a mental disorder after getting divorced last year. Now, the little boy had to take care of both himself and his mom. Since Martin’s brainpower was normal, he would stay put in my class.
I had never encountered a student like Martin before. It was a headache to help him fit into and catch up with his classmates. I had dreamed about teaching, so I hated it when the idea of giving up such a student lingered (萦绕) vividly in my mind.
Two days later, it was Martin’s turn to clean the blackboard. Rising to his feet and ready to walk to the platform, he was tripped by one student on purpose. Suddenly, he couldn’t resist weeping alone. Contrary to what I assumed, no one lent him a helping hand. I sent Martin to the infirmary (医务室) and screamed at the others that Martin’s difference was a reason for being treated warmly and nicely.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I realized it was high time that I should shoulder my responsibility.

B 5. A 6. C 7. C

根据第一段“More recently, I had the same struggles as everyone else with social media.
根据第二段“Eventually, I had an idea. 故选A。

通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段中“More recently, I had the same struggles as everyone else with social media. (最近,我和其他人一样,在社交媒体上遇到了同样的困扰。)”和第三段“But I found Jane Austen was my Mount Everest when I kicked off with her Emma.

A 9. B 10. A 11. C

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Gradually, positive changes were seen in Martin.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I realized it was high time that I should shoulder my responsibility. The next day, I had a heartfelt chat with Martin at his home. Sensing I was worth trusting, Martin sighed, “Thanks for your kindness. But burdened with huge family pressure, I feel my future will be dark.” In response, I held his hands firmly, convincing him that nothing was impossible with a willing heart. “Let’s fight for a promising future together, shall we?” I continued. He nodded slightly.
Gradually, positive changes were seen in Martin. He was no longer ashamed of his appearance. In classes, with his attention fixed on the Powerpoint slides and textbooks, he handled reading comprehension from scratch, managed to read lengthy texts and voiced his own opinions. During breaks, long gone were the days when Martin had escaped to his inner safe space. Befriending classmates around him, he found they were on the same wavelength. I came to realize that no matter what problems my students had, I, as a teacher, should try my best to help them out.
