一、高考真题
1. 2023年1月浙江卷
A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. Wandering along the same blackberry-lined path, I couldn’t help recalling the little hummingbird. Was she all right? Perhaps there was any possibility that we would meet again? A flush of curiosity swept over me, which urged me to return to the deserted milking house after meeting my friends. To my relief, the broken window had been fixed as they promised. Everywhere was fuller of vigor and vitality than before. I had no intention to enjoy its beauty, my eyes searching for the tiny creature, but in vain.
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. Miraculously, she flew down to me gracefully like a fairy with her wings gleaming in the sunlight. Hovering, the little bird looked into my eyes, through which I could read a sense of recognition and excitement. Her squeaking call jointed with the rustle of the trees in harmony. When the tiny feet grazed my palm, time seemed to stand still. What I had been expecting did come into my sight. So joyful and moved was I that I responded, I smiled, I appreciated the moment belonging to us and I believed it was a reward for love in the magical nature.

A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp. Roaring even more angrily this time, he smashed his paws crazily against the wire fence, trying to stab us with his sharp claws. Panicked as we were, Elli and I screamed at the top of our lungs, and waved our fists at him in an attempt to intimidate and scare him away.
To our disappointment, all these efforts were in vain. The bear violently dashed against the wooden posts which were evidently on the verge of collapsing!
At that very moment, the helicopter arrived. The gusting wind from the hovering vehicle swept away our fear immediately. Out of the helicopter descended a rope to pull us up. Thrilled yet relieved, we grabbed the rope and eventually landed on the helicopter safe and sound. While looking at the chunky bear from high above, I was amazed to spot this stubborn guy had crushed the fence and headed toward our camp for the inviting garlic bread. At this once in a lifetime moment, I reached into my backpack and pulled out the camera, photographing that impressive scene.

Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. The horse got scared and moved to the side quickly. I held the reins tightly, trying not to fall. My dad rode over at once and helped me calm the horse. “It’s okay. You’re doing well,” he said with a smile. I felt a little better and nodded. We kept riding, but soon we noticed something was wrong. The path didn’t look the same as before. “Did we take the wrong way?” I asked. My dad looked around and frowned. The trees looked very similar, and there were no signs. We tried to turn back, but we only felt more lost. The sun was going down, and everything around us was getting darker and quieter.
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. The air turned cold, and the sounds of insects and birds made the place feel strange. I started to feel scared. “What if we can’t find the way back?” I asked. My dad took my hand and said, “Don’t worry. We’ll be fine.” Just then, we saw a small light between the trees. It was Uncle Paul with a lantern, coming to find us. “You missed a turn,” he said with a laugh. That night, as we sat at the dinner table, I felt thankful. Getting lost was scary, but it also became the most special part of our trip.

When the man arrived, the little dog ran straight into his arms, barking with joy. He crouched down, tears welling in his eyes as he held Buddy close. “Thank you,” he said, looking at Fauna with deep gratitude. “I thought I’d lost him forever.” Fauna forced a smile, her heart heavy. She reached out to gently stroke Buddy one last time. The dog licked her hand, as if saying goodbye. As the man turned to leave, Buddy looked back at her, tail wagging slowly, and Fauna waved, whispering, “Take care, Buddy.” Her parents stood quietly beside her, proud of the kindness and strength she had shown.
That evening, Fauna sat quietly in her room, feeling the emptiness that Buddy's absence had left behind. The house felt strangely quiet, and her heart ached with longing. Her mother walked in and sat beside her. “It’s okay to miss him,” she said softly, “but what you did was selfless and brave.” Fauna nodded slowly. She realized that love wasn’t just about holding on—it was also about letting go when it’s right. The next day, she found a note slipped under her door: a picture of her and Buddy, and the words, “You were his hero.” Fauna smiled through her tears. Buddy was gone, but what remained was a warmth that only doing the right thing could bring.

Out of nowhere, Sarah heard the sound of a girl crying in a weak voice. She pushed aside the bushes and saw a young camper sitting on the ground, her foot stuck between two rocks. Her face was pale and her eyes full of fear. “Help me... I think I twisted my ankle,” the girl said. Sarah quickly knelt beside her, trying to calm her down. “You’re safe now,” she whispered. With Sunny standing close and licking the girl’s hand gently, Sarah carefully helped free her foot. She then supported the girl as they slowly made their way back to the campsite. Other campers saw them coming and rushed over, thanking Sarah and Sunny again and again for their help. The girl’s parents hugged her tightly, tears running down their faces.
Seeing the girl’s relieved smile, Sarah realized Sunny not only saved a life, but inspired her to change and create. That night, Sarah picked up her paintbrush again. But this time, instead of painting quiet hills or still lakes, she painted the moment in the forest — the scared girl, Sunny’s alert eyes, and the warm light of hope in the trees. Her new works were filled with feeling and courage, and people soon noticed the change. Sarah held her first solo exhibition titled “Sunny Days,” sharing both her art and her story. And as visitors admired her paintings, Sarah knew that healing could come — not just through love, but through art and the quiet strength of a loyal friend.

Time slowed as a large bear emerged from the darkness. Its eyes glinted in the light, and it raised its head, sniffing the air. The air felt heavy with tension, and the kids huddled close behind me, their faces pale with fear. The dog barked sharply, and the bear turned its attention to our camp, its massive form lumbering toward us. “Car,” I whispered urgently. “Everyone to the car. Now.” We moved as one — Dan scooping up Tommy, me grabbing Sarah’s hand — as the bear moved closer. The dog stayed between us and the bear, growling low but never attacking, as if buying us time. My hands trembled as I fumbled for the car keys, finally unlocking the doors with a chirp. We scrambled into the car, the dog leaping in just as Dan slammed the door. From the safety of the SUV, we watched in horror as the bear tore through our campsite, ripping our tent apart like it was paper, devouring anything remotely edible.
We sat with the dog in the car, watching the bear leave. The bear finally finished and wandered back into the woods. The campsite was unrecognizable, with the tent shredded and the cooler overturned. The dog, now quiet, sat proudly on Tommy’s lap, his eyes still fixed on the trees. “He saved us,” Sarah whispered, stroking his dirty fur. Tommy nodded, hugging the dog tightly. “We should keep him,” he said, his voice full of determination. Dan and I exchanged a look and smiled. “I think he’s already decided to stay,” I said softly. As the sun began to rise, casting a warm glow over the ruined campsite, we knew one thing for sure — our family had grown by one brave and loyal member.

"Check your backpack," Laura instructed, her voice being hopeful. "We might have something that can help us start a fire." Cassie nodded, her fingers trembling as she unzipped the side pocket of her backpack. She was relieved to find a flashlight, a compact emergency blanket and a small, waterproof pouch containing waterproof matches. "Bingo!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with a mix of surprise and relief. They quickly set to work, using the waterproof matches to ignite a small fire with the dry leaves and twigs Laura had collected. The survival blanket was spread out, providing a thin layer of insulation against the cold, damp ground.
As night fell, the storm finally began to die down. The girls, exhausted but determined, decided to make a move. They knew the trail would be risky in the dark, but staying in the shelter wasn't an option either. Using the flashlight, they carefully navigated the slippery path, following the markers they had set earlier. The fog had lifted, and the moon provided just enough light to see by. Hours later, they finally reached the edge of the forest. The lights of the campsite were a welcome sight. Cassie grinned, her teeth no longer chattering, "We made it back." Laura nodded, her eyes meeting Cassie's. Their adventure had been terrifying, but it had also been a testament to their bond and their survival skills. And as they sat by the fire, sipping hot chocolate, they knew they would never forget the day they had faced the storm together.

“I have an idea to stay warm!” Tom shouted excitedly. At the sound of the words, Mary raised her head with the light of hope sparkling in her eyes. “What's your solution?” she yelled, a trace of expectation interwoven with anxiety could be sensed in her voice. “Let’s huddle the penguins together." Tom’s crystal-like voice rippled in the room as if a spark of fire leapt its way to their hearts. Taking a deep breath, Mary and Tom closed their eyes to compose themselves and ran to the corner together to wrap penguins in their arms as tightly as they could. Time ticking by, the fluffy snowflakes were dancing in the air, the naughty and innocent penguins were still with them like friends.
Two and a half hours later, the parents returned with help. “My poor kids, are you fine?” They screamed and ran as fast as their legs could carry them to examine the equipment in the lab. After a while, the temperature in the lab restored to its original state. Enveloped by a sense of warmth and security, the two friends hugged each other again with tears blurring their visions. With a smile of comfort and relief blooming on their faces, they watched penguins playing freely---a sight that would be forever engraved in their minds. The impressive episode lingered long after that freezing day, serving as a precious reminder of the cherished memories shared between the two good friends and the penguins. It emphasizes the vital importance of animal protection and harmonious coexistence, while enriching their understanding of the value of deep friendship and cooperation.

Suddenly, Jack bent and quickly caught a fish. Within a few moments, a vibrant Tangerine Darter was gently held for all to see. The fish's orange belly glowed in the sunlight, showing colors brighter than the best drawing. The students gathered around, their faces alight with wonder and excitement. Jack explained the significance of the darter’s vibrant color and its need for pristine waters, connecting the dots between the fish's health and the environment's cleanliness. The students, now fully engaged, took turns observing the fish closely, their curiosity piqued. This hands-on moment made the lesson come alive, clearly igniting a spark of interest in their eyes.
Seeing the students' interested looks, Jack raised a question. "Considering what we've learned and seen today, what steps can we take to ensure the preservation of these fish and their natural habitats?" This question ignited a vibrant discussion, with students proposing a variety of conservation efforts, from initiating river clean-up projects to launching awareness campaigns in their community. The trip had evidently transformed them from mere spectators to proactive environmental advocates. Jack's heart swelled with pride as he listened to their ideas, realizing that the experience had not only educated them about environmental conservation but had also empowered them to take action. This journey to the Pigeon River, far more than a simple field trip, had sown the seeds of responsibility towards nature in the hearts of the next generation.

“This is Maya's secret,” Hilda said with a big smile. Hilda turned around and faced Maya in the water, showing off a handful of items. Gazing at them, Maya was unbelievably taken aback for a moment. As if she had understood something, she swam back to the filter box behind swiftly, sticking her nose down to search. But nothing was waiting for her, which was a clap of thunder in her mind. Drawing near Hilda, Maya leapt out of the water suddenly and let out her unique clicking sound in annoyance for the discovered secret. With water splashing, Hilda was too late to dodge, making it hard to keep eyes open. Instead of getting angry, Hilda giggled, feeling much funnier. Katherine stepped forward closely to figure out what was in Hilda’s hand .
Now Katherine realized what had been going on. She exchanged a knowing smile with Hilda. Everything did make sense. Never had she thought the dolphin Maya was smart enough to use the filter box as a hidden place for the items. To Maya, every time Hilda found something in the tank , it meant one less treat for her. “No wonder Maya would always get an unexpected item. What a dolphin!” observed Hilda in relief. Hadn't she spied on Maya, she wouldn't have found out the secret. Seeing Maya leaping and drawing a beautiful arc in the air, both Katherine and Hilda couldn’t help rewarding her favorite fish, which Maya deserved. Meanwhile, it was exactly at the moment that they realized there were still more incredible aspects of animals in nature waiting for them to explore and discover.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired? Or too thirsty?
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.
Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say goodbye.”
A few weeks later, I went to the farm again.

One fall, my wife Elli and I had a single goal: to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world”— the town of Churchill in Manitoba, Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears — like all wild animals — should be photographed from a safe distance. When I’m face to face with a polar bear, I like it to be through a camera with a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner, a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified, Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear though — he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws (爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way, but it would be 30 minutes before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter (相遇), I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn’t last through 30 more minutes of the bear’s punishment. The camp manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears’ eyes, but doesn’t hurt them. So I approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar (吼叫), the bear ran to the lake to wash his eyes.
A few minutes later, the bear headed back to our camp.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.

The Right Thing to Do
Fauna had always dreamed of keeping a pet. Time and again, she asked her parents, promising to walk, feed, and look after it. Each time, though, they gave the same gentle response: “We’ll see.”
One afternoon, on her way home from school, Fauna saw a little dog wandering near the park. Its fur was messy, and it looked lost, sniffing the ground as if searching for something. Feeling curious and hopeful, Fauna bent down and called to it. The dog quickly ran over, wagging (摇) its tail and gently pressing its nose into her hand, like they had known each other forever.
She looked around, but no one seemed to be searching for the dog. Feeling pity for the lost dog, Fauna decided to take it home. As they walked side by side, her heart swelled with joy. It felt as though this was the pet she had always dreamed of—a friend she had been waiting for.
At the front door, Fauna’s mother greeted her with a warm smile. Although she found the dog adorable, she gently reminded Fauna that they needed to try and find its owner. If the dog was lost, someone must be missing it. Fauna reluctantly (不情愿地) agreed, though part of her wished no one would come forward to claim the little dog.
Over the next few days, Fauna and the dog—whom she named Buddy—grew inseparable. She fed him, played with him, and let him sleep curled up at the foot of her bed. Every day, it became harder to imagine life without him. Buddy seemed happy too, wagging his tail whenever she came home from school. But Fauna knew deep down that she had to do the right thing. She and her parents posted flyers around town, hoping to find Buddy’s owner.
Just a few days later, the phone rang. Fauna’s heart sank as her father answered. From the conversation, it was clear that the caller was Buddy’s owner. He described Buddy perfectly—the friendly eyes and playful personality. Fauna knew Buddy would soon be leaving her. Her father arranged for the owner to come by and pick Buddy up.
When the man arrived, the little dog ran straight into his arms, barking with joy.

In the quiet town of Willow Creek, lived a young woman named Sarah. Sarah was an artist, known for her paintings of landscapes and animals, but beneath her calm appearance, she struggled with anxiety and depression. The pressures of her job and the isolation she often felt had a negative impact on her mental health, and she spent many days feeling overwhelmed and disconnected from the world around her.
One afternoon, as Sarah was leaving the local art gallery, she noticed a small, scruffy dog sitting by the door. It looked lost, hungry, and a little scared. Sarah's heart softened as she approached the dog, offering it a piece of her sandwich. The dog wagged its tail and sniffed at the food, but instead of eating, it sat down next to her, as if asking for something more. Feeling an instinctive (直觉的) pull, Sarah decided to take the dog home with her, naming it Sunny.
Over the next few weeks, Sunny became Sarah's constant companion. Every morning, he would greet her with an excited bark and a wagging tail. Sarah soon discovered that Sunny was not just a pet, but a therapy dog. Whenever she felt her anxiety starting to set in, Sunny would push her hand with his nose or curl up beside her, offering her the comfort of his presence. His gentle behavior and unconditional love helped Sarah feel less alone, and for the first time in months, she began to feel like she had a purpose.
One evening, Sarah decided to take Sunny for a walk through the woods near a popular campsite. The sun was setting, and the air was fresh and cool. As they walked deeper into the forest, Sarah's mind wandered to the dark thoughts she had been battling for so long. Suddenly, Sunny stopped in his tracks and started barking furiously, looking alertly at a thick patch of bushes. Sarah felt a surge of panic, wondering what had startled (惊吓) him. But before she could react, Sunny dashed toward the bushes, pulling Sarah along with him.
Out of nowhere, Sarah heard the sound of a girl crying in a weak voice.

The summer night was serene (宁静), with crickets sunging and a gentle breeze rustling the trees around us. We had found the perfect camping spot, deep in the woods, far from the distractions of daily life. No Wi-Fi, no schedules — just our family, together. This was what camping was all about — unplugging, connecting, and makıng memories.
As the fire burned down, we crawled into our tent, the kids falling asleep almost instantly. Everything was perfect.
Until it wasn’t.
In the middle of the night, I woke with a start, my heart pounding. Something was outside our tent. The sound was faint but persistent — soft footsteps, a shuffle here and there, followed by a pause.
I nudged my husband awake. Sighing, Dan reached for the flashlight and unzipped the tent. “Oh,” he said softly. “It’s just a dog.” I scrambled out of the tent to take a look. A tan, short-haired dog stood at the edge of our campsite, pacing back and forth. His fur was dirty, and he looked underfed.
“Poor thing,” I whispered. “He must be hungry.” Dan grabbed some leftover hot dogs, offering one to the dog. To our surprise, the dog backed away, his eyes darting nervously toward the trees.
By now, the kids had woken up, and Tommy was beside himself with excitement. “Adoggy!” he shouted, much too loud for the quiet night.
“Shh,” I warned. “We don’t want to scare him.”
Sarah, our daughter, ever observant, tilted her head and said, “Something’ s wrong, Mom. Look how scared he is.”
She was right. The dog seemed torn between staying and fleeing, pacing anxiously, his tail tucked. Then we heard it — a heavy rustling coming from the trees behind us. The dog froze, his head snapping toward the sound, and a low growl rumbled from his throat. His hair rose as he positioned himself between us and the forest.
Time slowed as a large bear emerged from the darkness.

A high-pitched scream stopped Laura Douglas in her tracks. Spinning around on the narrow dirt path, she thought that her cousin Cassie was in danger. Instead, Cassie was knee deep in flowers that covered the meadow(草地)like a quilt.
"Cassie! You scared me to death!" Laura scolded, her voice echoing through the meadow. "I am sorry," Cassie, absorbed in her photography, didn't notice the thick fog rolling in, consuming the nearby mountains. "Not again!" Laura complained, her eyes shifting to the approaching clouds. "We gotta go!"
Cassie's focus remained on her camera, capturing the short-lived beauty of the moment. Laura tied a red scarf around her hair, "Let's go back to the campsite." The girls quickly ran down the winding path, the meadow now covered by a thick fog and a steady, cold rain. The road turned slippery, and they had to move slowly to avoid sliding down.
"It's dangerous! We need shelter now!" Cassie screamed after a loud crack of thunder, the storm's strength increasing rapidly. Laura's keen eyes found a small cave in the rock face, partly hidden by overhanging branches. It wasn't much, but it offered a chance to escape the rain.
"Cassie, over here!" Laura called out, her voice barely carrying over the wind.
Cassie, wet and shaking, stumbled towards the place of Laura's voice. As she approached, she could see the shelter. It wasn't perfect, but it was better than nothing.
"Smart thinking, Laura," Cassie said, her teeth chattering(打颤)with cold as she pressed her backpack close to her chest. The backpack, a tough and waterproof(防水的)model, had been a gift from her father, an experienced hiker who had insisted on its numerous pockets and sections for emergency supplies. Little did they know, his advice would prove invaluable on this day.
"Check your backpack," Laura instructed, her voice being hopeful.

When Mary entered the South Pole Penguin Research Lab, she saw her friend Tom gently stroking (轻抚) a penguin in his arms. As children of the lab scientists, Mary and Tom often observed the emperor penguins that were studied to understand how they adapted to extreme temperatures—insights that could aid human survival.
“We're thirteen, Tom. It's time to grow up and stop playing with the lab penguins ,” said Mary as she started cleaning. “They're research animals, not pets."
“But the birds listen to me!” insisted Tom, his breath forming a cloud in the freezing air.“You're just trying to be a penguin whisperer again,” Mary replied, shaking her head with a gentle smile. The penguins seemed playful as they walked, dove, swam and chased their live fish for sport before eating.
Suddenly, an alarm rang out and red lights flashed, signaling a problem. The kids rushed over to look into it. “It's colder than before—there's ice forming on the water,” noted Tom. Though always cold, Mary had never seen ice here before. She checked the habitat monitor and found that the temperature had gone down a lot. “The heater must be broken!”
Mary quickly sent a message to their parents' research team, who were conducting outdoor studies. With the adults away, the kids would have to deal with the freezing conditions until help arrived.
Time dragged as Mary and Tom anxiously waited. The increasing cold caused them to shake. “I wonder what emperor penguins do in extreme cold, since they stay in the Pole all winter instead of going somewhere warmer,” asked Mary. “They huddle (挤作一团),” Tom answered.“They huddle together tightly so that the birds in he middle will be warm enough.” “What about the ones on the edge?” Mary asked. “ They push their way towards the center, and then move back out to the edge, and struggle back again. Scientists in the early 21st century recorded it. ” He replied as he stared at the large crowd of the penguins in the lab.
“I have an idea to stay warm !”Tom shouted excitedly.

An Outdoor Trip That Speaks Louder Than A Regular Class
One day, as Jack, a science teacher, stressed the pressing need for protecting Tangerine Darters, a kind of fish, students in his class seemed uninterested and bored. Jack continued, but his students showed little enthusiasm.
He paused for a moment, allowing the silence to settle in the classroom. Then he went on in a different way.
"Imagine," Jack began, his voice filled with passion, "the feeling of wading(趟水) through the clear shallow waters of Pigeon River, surrounded by the gentle sunlight. Picture the colors of the Tangerine Darters as they gracefully swim through the currents, their orange bellies(肚子) shining like rays of sunshine, or in that moment, a Tangerine Darter in your hands, its orange belly shining in the sunlight." He painted a vivid picture with his words. Curiosity lit in his students' eyes as they bent forward, eager to know more.
Jack continued, "The darters are very picky about their habitats. The place where they live should be very clean, and slight pollution could drive them away or even endanger their very existence."
As Jack spoke, his passion spread quickly among his students, who started to ask questions, wanting to know more about the Tangerine Darters. Inspired by their newfound interest, Jack had an idea. Why not take students to the Pigeon River, where they can witness the beauty of the Tangerine Darters firsthand?
A week later, they were on the trip to the Pigeon River in Canton, North Carolina, where the environment was well preserved in comparison with other industrial areas.
Sunshine bounced off the Pigeon River, and cool water flowed over rocks and boulders(卵石)—the preferred habitat of Tangerine Darters. With Jack, it was the first time that the students had stood in the shallow water, eager to see their target of this fish eco logy class field trip.
Suddenly, Jack bent and quickly caught a fish.

Last summer, Hilda worked as a volunteer with dolphin trainers at a sea life park. Her job was to make sure the tanks were free of any items so that the trainers could train the dolphins to fetch specific items. However, one day after cleaning, one of the dolphins, Maya, presented Hilda with a candy wrapper from the tank. When Katherine, the trainer, saw this, she blamed Hilda for her carelessness. Upset but not discouraged by this event, Hilda decided to do some spying on Maya.
The next morning, Hilda arrived at the park early. She put on her scuba gear(水下呼吸器)and jumped into the tank for her usual, underwater sweep. Finding nothing in the tank, she climbed out of the water just in time to see Katherine jumping in on the other side. After what happened yesterday, Hilda knew what she was doing. She watched as Katherine performed her underwater search, but Hilda wasn't surprised when she surfaced empty-handed.
During the tank sweeps, Maya had been swimming playfully, but now the dolphin stopped suddenly and swam to the back part of the tank where the filter (过滤) box was located. She stuck her nose down behind the box and then swam away. What was Maya doing back there? Hilda wondered. She jumped back into the water and swam over to take a look behind the box, and her question was answered. Hilda then swam across the tank following Maya's path and emerged from the water to find Katherine removing her scuba gear. As Katherine turned around, her mouth dropped open. There was Maya at the edge of the tank with a comb(梳子) in her mouth waiting for her treat.
“Maya! Where did you get that?” demanded Katherine, taking the comb and throwing her a fish. “I know where she got it,” declared Hilda climbing out of the tank with a handful of items still wet from their watery, resting place. “What's all this?” Katherine asked, obviously confused.
“This is Maya's secret,” Hilda said with a big smile.
